More people should be talking about Creatures of Ava! Like it just released, more people should know about this. I had a fantastic time last night playing it for the first time, and it was absolutely worth every penny I spent.

sci-fi animals and creatures that are wild, cute, creative and wacky

not having to kill a million aliens to achieve your goal (there is combat but you heal things instead)

studying alien wildlife but this time the game actually wants you to and gives you lore, instead of leaving you to hopelessly speculate about information you'll never receive

exploring ancient alien ruins that are directly tied to the plot

aliens with non-traditional gender roles and nonbinary pronouns

games that make you play music to achieve goals

open world games

If you answered yes to any of these, then Creatures of Ava is for you! It is vibrant, it is intriguing, it is teaming with life - seriously, go check it out. It's on PC & xbox, and its by 11 bit studios, the same game company that made one of my favourite games the Invincible.

Creatures of Ava is a really interesting game narrative-wise, but I can't really talk about why without spoiling the twist. I don't know if I like that it's not like every other 'humans save the aliens because humans know best' storyline, or am annoyed by the overall way that the plot makes everything you do as a player feel kind of pointless by the end.

Playing Creatures of Ava has made me wonder what the heck "creature collector" even is as a genre. Ava uses a research system very similar to Pokémon Legends Arceus, but otherwise has little to no RPG mechanics and certainly no team building. Does creature collector as a genre apply to non-RPGs? Palworld, as I understand it, is not an RPG. Is that a creature collector? It is certainly marketed like one.

Is Pokémon Ranger a creature collector? You (temporarily) recruit creatures and make a team out of them.

Is Bugsnax a creature collector? You literally collect creatures but you don't make a team out of them, you just feed them to people.

What constitutes collecting creatures? Does Pokémon Snap, a game about collecting photos of creatures, count?

Zoo Tycoon? Metroid Prime??

Creatures of Ava bills itself as more of a "creature saver" where Vic is a young nature adventurer on an expedition, finding herself having to save the land's creatures from an infection known as "The Withering" that seems to result in creepy growths of withered plants. So Vic has to help out the creatures by saving them, and can also tame them through music via an indigenous flute, making friends with the critters in the process through non-violent gameplay.
