The Digital Identity Dilemma: SSI vs. SBT

In the ever-evolving digital world, the way we manage our digital identities is becoming a hot topic. I've been diving deep into the realms of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and Soulbound Tokens (SBT) and stumbled upon a super insightful blog that shed light on why SSI might just be the better option for managing digital credentials. Let's unpack this together.
Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI): Your Digital Autonomy
SSI is all about putting you in the driver's seat of your digital identity. It's a decentralized approach that lets individuals control their personal data. Imagine having a digital wallet where you store all your credentials, and you get to decide who sees what. It's like being the gatekeeper of your own digital castle.
Soulbound Tokens (SBT): The Blockchain's Promise
On the flip side, SBTs are like digital badges of honor that are permanently attached to your blockchain identity. They represent your credentials, achievements, and affiliations in a non-transferable way. Think of them as tattoos for your digital soul—once you have them, they're there for good.
Why I'm Leaning Towards SSI
Control and Privacy
With SSI, your data is yours, and yours alone. You have complete control over who gets access to your credentials. It's a privacy advocate's dream come true, offering a level of security and autonomy that's hard to beat.
Flexibility and Interoperability
SSI doesn't tie you down to any single platform or blockchain. It's designed to work across various systems, making your digital identity as versatile and adaptable as you are.
The Power to Update
Life changes, and so do our credentials. SSI allows you to easily update or revoke your digital credentials, ensuring your digital identity remains as dynamic as your real-life one.
Broad Adoption Potential
SSI's open and flexible nature means it can be adopted across a wide range of sectors and industries. It's not just a niche blockchain solution but a comprehensive approach to digital identity management.
Wrapping It Up
After exploring both sides, I'm convinced that SSI offers a more holistic and user-friendly approach to managing our digital selves. The autonomy, privacy, and flexibility it provides align perfectly with the digital age's demands.
For those curious to dive deeper into this comparison, I highly recommend checking out this neutral and informative blog: explore here. It's a great read that offers a detailed look into the pros and cons of each approach.
So, what do you think? Is the future of digital identity in the hands of SSI, or do SBTs have a role to play in shaping our digital worlds? Let's chat in the comments!
Remember, as we navigate through the digital cosmos, the way we manage our identities is crucial. Whether it's SSI, SBT, or another emerging technology, the goal is to find a solution that respects our privacy, autonomy, and need for control. Here's to a future where our digital identities are as secure and authentic as our real-world ones.

I have two main thoughts off the back of the Williams announcement...
James Vowles was too indecisive to get rid of Logan at the end of last year... or over summer when he SHOULD have done it. BUT it's only because he hung on to Logan for this year that he's managed to get Carlos so... was that his intention all along?
Red Bull absolutely lied about Checo's seat being safe to coincide with his documentary release didn't they? Refusing to loan out your reserve to a steady seat that will help him build experience 'just in case you need him' when they have a list as long as your arm of viable alternatives... just gives the impression that that whole story is nowhere near closed?

I know there's a lot more going on in the world to focus on but I really hate it that I haven't been able to stay at a job for much more than 3 years. my first professional position after college I left after 3 and a half years due to management becoming really sucky, then I was a nanny for two years and left due to family dynamics, now I'm just getting past the 2.5 year mark in my current job and I'm already applying for new stuff. I just want to be able to stay somewhere. I'm almost 30. I just want to be able to find a place and stay there.
#and the thing is. i want to stay here#i really like the work i do. i love the kids. and doing groups and sessions and breaks#even some of the paperwork is fun in an oddly satisfying kind of way and i love putting my signature and credentials on it#but the management here is just...so problematic#they have proved in so many ways that they really don't care about us as employees#and honestly that they don't really care much about the kids#they're pretty blatant about how they care more about how much money the program gets#and i just cant handle that kind of work environment#on top of the shady stuff my manager did to me#anyway#venting again#personal

The problem, Elia reflected between tight and gasping breaths, was that she never took enough time for herself. She just kept saying “yes” to people when she really ought to be saying “no.” It was that damned empathy of hers. Her father always said it was her curse. Elia could take one look in someone's pleading face and find herself agreeing to grade papers over her birthday, run a three-hour errand, babysit overnight, or — to give the most recent example — agree to steal a priceless amulet from the bedroom of Lord Cathryn during his inaugural ball.
The theft, of course, had happened without a hitch. The problem — and reason she was now fleeing for her life — had come after. The amulet, one she had been assured was merely a mundane family keepsake stolen during the Meruvian War, contained an elemental. She had not prepared for a thrice-cursed storm elemental.
Elia leapt over the low wall marking the furthest edge of Lord Cathryn’s estate. Here, old forest grew over and around the wall transforming it from a sign of the Cathryn family’s prowess to a harbinger of their hubristic demise. A demise now most assuredly come given the wreckage behind her. Crouched against the mossy stone and hidden in the shadows of ancient trees, Elia attempted to breathe. The effort was rather more bothersome than she would have liked. Her quiet life in the academy had made her soft.
Beyond the wall, a storm howled. The elemental made no distinction among people. As the holder of the amulet, she was as culpable as those who had imprisoned and used it. Explanations and reason did not matter. Elia pressed her forehead against the cool stone wall as her mind raced. She could neither run nor hide forever. The elemental would catch her. And, when it did, the crater it had made of Cathryn Hall would seem a mercy.
She had only one move to make. Gods help her; she almost preferred death.
Elia bit the edge of her thumb until it bled. She’d bought every protection spell she could find to ensure she never bled. Even her monthlies were only a memory. No blade nor stone nor living nor nonliving thing could harm her. Except herself.
A scarlet bead bubbled at the base of her nail. The tiny drop both saved and damned her.
Her betrothed was coming.
The betrothal then, much like her actions now, had been an act of desperation. Back then it had been the rather tricky matter of a long-lost pearl, a grief-mad mage, a demonic sea-lord, and a blood fae. Between the mage intent on using her to resurrect his lost love and a sea-lord claiming her as his pet to deny the mage his reunion, an alliance with the blood fae had seemed the best escape. She gave him the pearl; he gave her a door out of there.
He had not, however, explained that she could only use his portal if his magic recognized her as bound to him. At that exact moment, with the portal open and waiting, the mage had finished his working. Elia's life began evaporating from her skin.
“I gave you the pearl!” she’d yelled.
“And I gave you a door.” He'd marked it with a bow. “Now what will you give me to walk through it?”
The sea-lord had then flooded the room, cutting off the working, but filling her lungs. She'd coughed up saltwater and gasped, “Anything.” Details hadn’t mattered. Only living had.
The blood fae bit her and they'd both fallen through the door.
Only later did she realize his manipulations. The fae was no mere bloodling, but rather was Daaven Eranyvetri, the heir of the Crosswise Court. He could have ended the conflict with the mage and sea-lord with a snap of his fingers. Instead, he’d chosen to entrap her. She still didn't know why.
Their door had opened into the open court room of his family’s holdings. There among the tittering courtiers, he’d dragged her — hand still bleeding — to his mother’s throne and declared her his betrothed.
In retrospect, she should have allied with the sea-lord.
"Dearest," Daaven said, appearing eye-level before her. He combed his long fingers through her falling-down hair, "you've been hiding from me."
She shuddered. "Can you stop the elemental?"
Daaven stood and stretched. The fine silks of his coat wafted warm incense as he moved. She hated how well it settled her rabbiting heart. Three months she'd lived in his court before she'd found a way to escape. During that time, she'd never named them betrothed, had never accepted his gifts, and had never granted him her kiss. That had been why she could escape as she did.
With a sketch of his hand, the howling winds quieted and the pelting rain slowed. The storm was not gone; he'd simply enclosed the two of them within a bubble of time.
"One minute," he announced. "Why should I not simply leave once those seconds pass?"
She glared up at him, hating the smug line of his lips and flat light of his emerald eyes. "I'm your betrothed."
His eyes widened, and he swallowed. "Are you? Wives-to-be don't typically run away and hide for five years."
Her nails bit into her palms. "You tricked me."
"And yet you're calling on that trick now." He knelt so that they were eye-level. Urgency limned his every word. "Fifteen seconds. You know the rules. Say it again and seal it with a kiss." He drew a dagger and nicked his lower lip: a gift of blood and all the protection and promises that represented.
She stared at him and the bead of blood welling on his lips. If she kissed him, if she accepted his gift, she could never run again.
"Seven seconds."
Lightning cracked overhead, stretching line by line like a claw toward her. Death was waiting. Fine. If she had no choice, she could at least even the scales.
Elia smeared blood from her thumb onto her lips and surged to meet his. A gift for a gift. When she pulled back, she had no time to ponder the strange relief in his gaze. "I am your betrothed."
"And I am yours," he responded, pulling her into another kiss, accepting the gift, granting the kiss, binding himself to her as tightly as she was now bound to him. That meant something; she didn't know what yet. The bubble of time popped. A deafening roll of thunder cut to silence.
"My Elia," he murmured, smearing their blood with his thumb over her lips and corner of her mouth. "We have so much to discuss." He wrapped his other arm around her, tugging her flush against his chest. Her nose pressed into his collar and that cursedly calming resin-honey-woodsmoke scent of his.
Light flashed. And they were gone.
#snippet#elia#no clue what this is yet#daaven needs elia for political reasons#i think he was charmed by her quick mind and wit during the pearl case#and decided she'd be the perfect ally for political shit#but then miscalculated on the recruitment by not explaining first#then she managed to escape before he could explain#and he's been using her in absentia to ward off an unwanted marriage and advance his agenda#but it has been very slow going and likely to fail soon#he was on the verge of finding another ally when he smelled her blood for the first time in YEARS#and he has a chance again#he was always going to save her but she surprises him by calling herself his betrothed#and that is when he decides to try Plan A again with her at his side#elia has no patience for court politics and especially fae court politics#but she has named him and kissed him and accepted him#and foolishly offered her own gift in return#(a fact that had given him SO MUCH hope)#what daaven wants more than anything is someone in his corner#elia thinks she wants quiet stability but really she wants challenges#that's why she accepted the amulet job#elia thinks she's a sucker for sob stories#but really she is snared by challenges and she isn't exactly fond of that aspect of herself#she prefers to believe she's just really empathic#daaven has some acumen but he's more connections lies tricks and power#elia is all cleverness agile risk-taking patient scary intelligent#she talked her way into an academic position with zero credentials and backed it up with her intelligence and acuity#that doesn't mean she wants to be the queen of the crosswise court

merryn is rarely found in her own room at the lighthouse, particularly because she tries to avoid sleep as much as possible; she can usually be found in the main library, which i hc as being one of the rooms off the room where they have team meetings (which is called the library but doesn't have many books) - this library is a veritable treasure trove of elvhen books, and one of its side chambers is also where she ends up storing all the books that manon, her mentor, sends her in order to keep them safe as the blight in the south spreads. i like to think it's quite a cosy place, and she frequently falls asleep here. (and yes, the meditation chamber slowly becomes filled with books and plants, with the lighthouse magics replacing the fish tank with a giant window, but there's no such thing as too many rooms full of books.)
in the longer term post-veilguard, merryn would like to do a proper catalogue of the books in the library and get some of them reprinted and redispersed among the elven population, because they have lost so much of their history and now even their gods are tainted, but she is very, very keen that any reclaimed knowledge is not hoarded by the dalish. she's a city elf, she knows how her people are looked on by dalish clans, and how little they have to cling onto, and future generations deserve it too. i feel like she might be more inclined to establish some kind of elvhen library society to make sure things are accessible to all. she wants to be cautious, because any knowledge might give humans more of a reason to hate them, but she is always going to be the curious historian who believes that knowledge should be shared freely. idk how far she actually gets with these ideas, but she'd love to give it a go. she's done all the world-saving she can stomach, thank you.
#she already becomes a published author lmao#but potentially it could be a way for her to help elves like her from both alienages and clans#like she was constantly seeking more knowledge than the hahren had and went to work in a library w someone who gave her a university-level#education AND the ability/credentials to research what she liked and manage acquisitions etc#MERRYN ALDWIR / headcanon.

Is Your Data Storage Strategy AI-Ready?
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/is-your-data-storage-strategy-ai-ready/
Is Your Data Storage Strategy AI-Ready?
The adoption of AI has caused an increased need for proper data governance, and companies are now under pressure to ensure data maturity. Globally, many companies are either using or exploring AI, with over 82% actively leveraging or considering AI for business operations. Yet, according to Gartner only 14% of cyber leaders can balance maximizing the efficient use of their data and securing their data to hit business objectives.
As more businesses rush to utilize AI, they need to ensure they are operating at peak data maturity with a proper framework to handle the increasing amount of critical data they are managing. By leveraging a data maturity model framework, organizations can identify the most effective ways to optimize data usage, helping pinpoint gaps in security and foster greater data efficiency. As part of this framework, organizations also need a mature data management strategy.
One of the most overlooked parts of a mature data management strategy is having the proper storage requirements to backup and store critical data. Businesses face many threats when it comes to their data security, and proper storage to handle AI workloads may be the only way to prevent AI-generated data from being lost or tampered with due to ransomware or another disaster. Your business may be AI-capable, but is your storage infrastructure AI-ready?
Why Storage Has to Be Involved in the AI Conversation
There are several reasons why proper storage is essential for data created and consumed by AI— businesses need to ensure data remains easily accessible, is secure against evolving threats, can be recovered in the case of a disaster, and must be optimized for AI workloads.
Accessibility is important because developers must be able to quickly and efficiently find and leverage data to train other AI algorithms. Most of the time this type of data is considered “mission critical” and can be the most valuable to business operations. Having this type of data readily available is key to ensuring streamlined processes when it matters most.
This data also needs to have the highest level of security while it is being stored. Given that 96% of ransomware attacks now target backup data, storage needs to be ransomware-proof and able to withstand any downtime or outage an organization may face. Backups are primary targets for attackers because they render companies unable to restore their data, making it more likely that they will pay the ransom to retrieve critical data. In the meantime, businesses could be left defenseless and face extended periods of IT outages if their “mission-critical” data is not accessible. This could cause both reputational and monetary loss that would be devastating for shareholders, customers, and employees alike.
Cybersecurity attacks are not the only reason storage may be lost or manipulated. Production data, or the data used in a business’s daily operations, should always be treated as though it was destroyed or corrupted. Therefore, a golden recovery copy, or a clean, reliable, and isolated copy of critical data is mandatory. Accidental deletion, overwriting data, or any other kind of mistake caused by human error can compromise your data. Software and hardware failures such as corruption or viruses can also put your data at risk, especially if your software and hardware do not have the most recent updates. Lastly, environmental factors such as power outages, floods, and extreme weather are all good reasons to ensure your backup data can be recovered.
What’s more, AI tools can produce an excessive amount of data at an exponential rate, and traditional storage architectures may not be able to keep up with the amount of data needed to be stored. Therefore, storage for AI must be equipped to handle massive workloads efficiently. Using scalable and secure data storage, such as tiered storage solutions, will present optimal capabilities so data is being monitored and saved.
The Best Storage of AI Data (Without Breaking the Bank)
Tiered backup storage ensures that vital data is quickly accessible and is one of the most cost-effective solutions. It allows for data retention, permitting data to be accessed and reused at any time. Tiered storage and backups organize data based on its importance and frequency of access. High-priority data goes on fast, expensive storage like SSDs, while less critical data is stored on cheaper, slower media like HDDs or cloud storage. Specifically, AI data should be stored on tier 0 or tier 1 given the above requirements. Tier 0 is high-speed storage for mission-critical data with NVMe media types and all-flash storage arrays. Tier 1 is high-performance storage for frequently accessed data with SSDs and hybrid Flash storage media types.
Taking it a step further, backing up the data housed in tiered storage as often as possible will allow for quick access in the face of a disaster, such as human error or malicious alteration. Ensuring copies of backup data stored in multiple locations, with several types of encryptions, and on various media types is the only way to be sure backups are secure.
When choosing a ransomware-proof backup and storage vendor, it is important to ensure you are selecting immutable storage that can withstand any kind of disaster that could put your data at risk. It’s important to note that not all immutable storage delivers on this agreement. If ‘immutable’ data can be overwritten by a backup or storage admin, a vendor, or an attacker, then it is NOT a truly immutable storage solution. Understanding the core concept of true immutability will help separate secure backup systems from empty vendor claims.
These five requirements help define a backup storage environment that delivers immutability:
S3 Object Storage: A fully documented, open standard with native immutability that enables independent penetration testing
Zero Time to Immutability: Backup data must be immutable the moment it is written
Zero Access to Destructive Actions: No administrator—internal or external—should be able to modify, delete, or reset immutable data.
Segmentation of Backup Software and Storage: Backup software and backup storage must be physically isolated to prevent compromised credentials from being used to alter or destroy data, and to provide resilience against other disasters.
Hardware Form Factor: A dedicated appliance isolates immutable storage from virtualized attack surfaces and should remove all risks during setup, updates, and maintenance.
By meeting these requirements, organizations can assure immutability and thereby ensure that whatever happens—ransomware, insider threats, or credential breaches—backup data remains protected and recoverable.
As AI becomes a consistent tool for businesses, they need to adopt and identify better data management and infrastructure to ensure data maturity. The answer to this may lie in tiered storage and backups as the best way to secure the excessive amounts of data created and trained by AI and allow for the ability to quickly access and secure this critical and expansive data.
