Frosty Mountain Morning
I was surprised today with a beautiful frosty mountain morning in the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining District. There was a combination of fog mist and snow all falling on the landscape at the same time. Despite the beauty of the scene, I wasn’t too happy about the sub freezing temperatures this close to summer. But I got dressed anyway, and headed out into the fog. The aspen trees were amazing…

Morning With the Animals
It was a beautiful morning and sunrise with the deer and small animals in the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining District. This beautiful lone buck saw me before I saw him, so the best I could get was him wandering away, over the top of the ridge. I opted not to try to chase him, but to just continue along the trail with the hope I would see him on the other side of the mountain. About 15 minutes…

Clearing My Head
Sometimes you just have to get outside and clear your head. Woke up way too early this morning and turned on the news so it wouldn’t be so dang quiet in the house.  I sat drinking my coffee trying to think of something productive to do this morning, other than to just get my morning exercise. But my mind was blank which I think that is a natural byproduct of watching the news. I swear every time…

Mule Deer in the Fog
Mule Deer in the Fog
Make a Donation Finally a big change in the weather, had to transition to my early winter weather gear! I knew it was going to be a great day as I drove to the trailhead and saw heavy fog rolling into the low valleys 🙂 On the hike to the top of the ridge the fog was drifting past the barren aspen trees, well worth a stop for some landscape pictures! By the time I got to the top of the ridge the…

Happy Easter From Mine Country
Happy Easter From Mine Country
Happy Easter 2022… I probably should have gone to Easter service at church, but somehow a gathering of people don’t seem to bring me closer to God. I knew my trail would be peaceful today so that is where I went to celebrate my Easter holiday. I was greeted by this little band of doe mule deer, also apparently enjoying this beautiful quiet morning. I stopped my hike for a half hour or so to take…

Winter Storm in Black and White
Winter Storm in Black and White
I don’t know why, I have always enjoyed going out in winter storms and shooting black and white pictures. The winter is winding down so when I saw the snowflakes yesterday I had to get out in it. I have a roll of Ilford HP5 black and white film in my Canon A-1 film camera and I’ve been wanting to do a video about it for some time now. Incidentally, I received an email from Mike’s Camera yesterday…

Hawks, Hunting and Gold
Hawks, Hunting and Gold
Make a Donation I fully expected to go out to another flat tire this morning so I was pretty happy to discover that the tire had held air overnight. Ran back in the house, grabbed my camera and headed for the Victor / Cripple Creek gold mining district where the leaves are changing around the old historic gold mines of a past era. The leaves up on Victor and Tenderfoot Passes are in peak color,…

Springtime in the Rockies
Springtime in the Rockies
Springtime is an unpredictable mess in the Rockies but no one can say it isn’t beautiful! On this day a dense fog rolled in from below in the Arkansas River valley creating this amazing ghostly scene in the Cripple Creek / Victor mining district. The Peak itself however, was not to be outdone. There was just enough fog and approaching cloud cover to create this amazing vista on the south face of

Amazing Foggy Mountains
Wasn’t expecting this! As I trekked up the north side of the mountain I could barely see a thing. Brought the camera just in case but it looked like all I was going to see was fog. It was kind of eerie, very little sound other than the chirping of the birds and the sound of our breath and my heart pounding from the exertion. I have seen signs of the bears awakening and was sincerely hoping I was…

Pikes Peak or Bust
Pikes Peak or Bust
Pikes Peak or Bust, my motto lately, became one step closer to reality. Under contract for a house in the old west mining town of Cripple Creek, Colorado. Sketchy start to the day however, as creepy stalker woman somehow managed to be out working in the yard in March at 7:00 a.m. so as to be sure to be able to make snide remarks as I passed by with the dogs on their morning walk. As of this…

First Snow 2020
Summer didn’t give up without a fight… some of the hottest weather I’ve seen in the mountains persisted right through the entire labor day weekend.  Almost 80 doesn’t sound very hot to ya’ll flat landers but we aren’t used to that up here! it was much worse in Denver, Sunday I believe hitting 101 degrees. It was so hot and bright just after sunrise that I didn’t even bother leaving the house.

A Little Exploring
My original plan for the day was to just stay home and give these tired old legs some rest… Lol, in my case, the flesh is willing but the spirit isn’t, I’m  just not good at resting it would seem! So once again I decided to load up my backpack, get on my bike and see where the day would lead me. First off I noticed that I could still get down to Bronco Billy’sin time for the cheap breakfast, so…
