Microsoft Global Outage Crowdstrike Bug Shocks Users

CrowdStrike Exposes a FUNDAMENTAL Problem in Software
On Friday, the security update from crowd strike caused the biggest IT disaster ever, there’s fundamental problem that I believe lies at the heart of this and that problem will get a lot worse in the future. crowd strike is a cyber security company that helps protect organizations from cyber threats such as malware and ransomware they have a platform Falcon that uses Ai and machine learning to…

my workplace had a nationwide server outage on wednesday that caused some minor chaos for about 3 hours (i got sent home from the office at 9am because we straight up couldnt do work but it came back up later)
meanwhile absolutely nothing has been affected by all this crowdstrike nonsense and i didn't even know there was an issue until my mom texted like "are you still online at work?????" and i'm like "huh" and look up to see just. mass global chaos
#anyway i guess we dont use crowdstrike cause we're fine! but we weren't lucky enough to miss All tech issues this week#still no idea what happened on wednesday. im not privy to information like that but it was....kinda weird#in a way where several of us wondered if there was phishing happening

my dad and i went to 3 starbucks... and they were all closed! :o
#idk why!#except for the third one having electrical issues (despite the lights being on!)#and the second one closed at 6 for regular hours#the first and last ones had papers on their doors saying there were temporarily closed#here's hoping they'll be open tomorrow! ;)#we went to a different bucky's last week so the baristas at our regular one probably miss us!#edit: hydevanhelsing said it's because of crowdstrike#i thought it was a strike but it's an order ahead system!#so it was electrical issues after all! ;)

idk if people on tumblr know about this but a cybersecurity software called crowdstrike just did what is probably the single biggest fuck up in any sector in the past 10 years. it's monumentally bad. literally the most horror-inducing nightmare scenario for a tech company.
some info, crowdstrike is essentially an antivirus software for enterprises. which means normal laypeople cant really get it, they're for businesses and organisations and important stuff.
so, on a friday evening (it of course wasnt friday everywhere but it was friday evening in oceania which is where it first started causing damage due to europe and na being asleep), crowdstrike pushed out an update to their windows users that caused a bug.
before i get into what the bug is, know that friday evening is the worst possible time to do this because people are going home. the weekend is starting. offices dont have people in them. this is just one of many perfectly placed failures in the rube goldburg machine of crowdstrike. there's a reason friday is called 'dont push to live friday' or more to the point 'dont fuck it up friday'
so, at 3pm at friday, an update comes rolling into crowdstrike users which is automatically implemented. this update immediately causes the computer to blue screen of death. very very bad. but it's not simply a 'you need to restart' crash, because the computer then gets stuck into a boot loop.
this is the worst possible thing because, in a boot loop state, a computer is never really able to get to a point where it can do anything. like download a fix. so there is nothing crowdstrike can do to remedy this death update anymore. it is now left to the end users.
it was pretty quickly identified what the problem was. you had to boot it in safe mode, and a very small file needed to be deleted. or you could just rename crowdstrike to something else so windows never attempts to use it.
it's a fairly easy fix in the grand scheme of things, but the issue is that it is effecting enterprises. which can have a looooot of computers. in many different locations. so an IT person would need to manually fix hundreds of computers, sometimes in whole other cities and perhaps even other countries if theyre big enough.
another fuck up crowdstrike did was they did not stagger the update, so they could catch any mistakes before they wrecked havoc. (and also how how HOW do you not catch this before deploying it. this isn't a code oopsie this is a complete failure of quality ensurance that probably permeates the whole company to not realise their update was an instant kill). they rolled it out to everyone of their clients in the world at the same time.
and this seems pretty hilarious on the surface. i was havin a good chuckle as eftpos went down in the store i was working at, chaos was definitely ensuring lmao. im in aus, and banking was literally down nationwide.
but then you start hearing about the entire country's planes being grounded because the airport's computers are bricked. and hospitals having no computers anymore. emergency call centres crashing. and you realised that, wow. crowdstrike just killed people probably. this is literally the worst thing possible for a company like this to do.
crowdstrike was kinda on the come up too, they were starting to become a big name in the tech world as a new face. but that has definitely vanished now. to fuck up at this many places, is almost extremely impressive. its hard to even think of a comparable fuckup.
a friday evening simultaneous rollout boot loop is a phrase that haunts IT people in their darkest hours. it's the monster that drags people down into the swamp. it's the big bag in the horror movie. it's the end of the road. and for crowdstrike, that reaper of souls just knocked on their doorstep.

golden rules I learned for rollouts so far: make sure it passes QA and unit/integration/E2E tests, set up a robust CI/CD pipeline, never rollout on a friday or weekend, always stagger rollouts, rollout to different environments for testing (dev > staging > canary > production, for example). and if you can, use feature flags or A/B testing first before deploying big changes. have a rollback plan in place and ready to go in dire situations.
#mine musings#work tag#there's more probably but this should set you up nicely. now which of these steps did crowdstrike mess up#anyway this is why i'm not a devops/SRE kind of guy. devops is HARD imo#of course there's always a question of scale like if you're a startup with 500 users you maybe don't need this robust of a setup yet#but that's not crowdstrike lol#though to be fair their issue is kinda difficult since the bug was in the BIOS or something? not easy to rollback from

Welp I know when the Crowdstrike error hit my computer 🙃
#For context: A company called Crowdstrike had an update that had an error in it that's BSOD'd every Windows computer running it#And my computer encountered this issue around midnight PST because it woke me up#So guess I'm not going to be able to work today until either Crowdstrike fixes this or my IT company can find a workaround#And the cherry on top? My company just made my department update to Windows 11 yesterday 🙃#RIP to the IT team they are in for a DAY today#ramblings about nothing/everything

Great day to have an email job
I made garlic spread and a cake
My colleagues are at home cleaning, reading, working on their hobbies or side hustles
10/10 wouldn't mind having these issues couple of times a month

Updated version. Apparently world wide chaos.

a failed update from billion-dollar cybersecurity firm crowdstrike has crashed windows machines worldwide today (july 19th 2024), leaving everything from airport terminals to checkout machines to delivery apps to banks stuck with a blue screen of death. here's a screenshot from downdetector (au) to illustrate:
the issue appears to be with crowdstrike falcon, a form of antivirus software widely used in the corporate world -- with emphasis on the world. there have been reports from the us, uk, australia, germany, india, france, japan and more. places affected include (but are not limited to) supermarkets, banks, basically every airline, public transport networks, major broadcasters, emergency services, corporate offices, healthcare providers and stock exchanges.

(woolies pic via archiestaines9 on twitter; s3pirion; akothari. yes that is masahiro sakurai of smash bros fame)
emergency service lines are currently experiencing problems within the american states of alaska, arizona, indiana, minnesota, new hampshire and ohio. similar problems likely plague other areas of the world, they just haven't been reported on yet. australian emergency services are operating, and critical infrastructure remains stable. be sure to check in with the local news stations still online for more updates.
welcome to y2k............................. 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!

let me also clarify because I've seen some people concerned about this: this crowdstrike issue is NOT an "all windows devices" issue. if you have a windows computer that is 100% yours and not managed by your workplace, there is zero risk to you. if you have a windows computer that your workplace manages, and your workplace doesn't use crowdstrike falcon, there is also zero risk to you. if you have a windows computer that your workplace manages, and your workplace DOES use crowdstrike falcon, enjoy your free day off
