Ship log: flying fish, approaching puerto rico

I went down one deck to “central park,” resplendent with real plants but recorded bird and cricket song. The park cafe opens at 6:45a for coffee and continental breakfast. It is calm and quiet in comparison to the anxiety-inducing energy of deck 15 breakfast buffet; there is plenty, but they still behave like sharks, kind sharks, “Oh, excuse me,” “oh sorry, I didn’t see you there,” and “whoops, pardon!” 

I go through the exit and see the drink area conveniently there. I pour two coffees and survey the offerings, knowing I will just be eating leftover wedding cake. I see there is an espresso machine and it looks like the barista is helping a woman get it just the way she likes it. A few other servers are in their stations nodding helpfully, saying, “yes, mem,” “of course, my lady,” and “thank you, ma’am” like the British pronounce it. I leave through the entrance to go back up a deck. I smile at a black man when he is twenty feet away. I get the feeling he won’t smile back so I look away. And then hopefully back up. He gives me a small smile and a polite nod. 

(Everyone has been so kind, except two Australians who pronounce deck to almost sound like dick. Now deck/dick jokes penetrate all conversations with our group.)

I set down a coffee cup on a cruise branded fan masquerading as a cabinet near the elevators. I grasp both handles in one hand so I can get to my key. I take the stairs back to my room without incident. I set a coffee cup down for my wife, who emerges momentarily from her doze, and I take mine out on the balcony with the eighth of a full sheet wedding cake and snap a photo. It looks decadent yet simple; white whipped cream frosting with some  decorative lavender pipping and layers of dark chocolate cake with actual dark chocolate and some sort of fruit jelly (apricot?) set on a white table with a white coffee cup with the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean and a landmass that could almost be mistaken for clouds on the horizon. I watch the coast of Puerto Rico become more detailed as flying fish flee the path of our massive cruise ship.

Look. I’ve studied Tom Cruise a lot. One could even call me a Cruisologist. (Not to be confused with. Well.) And, it’s actually really easy to predict Tom Cruise’s opinion on something. The tricky part is whether it will be made public in a timely manner or not and, if it’s made public at all, will it be a lede buried in favor of pushing a narrative sold on background by a studio exec he pissed off because he didn’t roll over and take their bullshit.
