The Power of Customer and Market Validation: My Aha Moment
Hello, my Keyomi’s!! What’s up, you guys?
Attending the Tech101 Week 6 Lecture on Customer and Market Validation was a game-changer for me. It wasn’t just another lecture for me but it was a wake-up call. I realized how crucial it is to validate an idea before jumping into execution. Many aspiring entrepreneurs, including myself, tend to fall in love with their ideas without actually testing if there’s a real demand for them. This session opened my eyes to a simple yet powerful truth—assumptions can be dangerous.
One of the biggest takeaways for me was the importance of asking the right questions during customer interviews. The speaker emphasized that questions should not be answerable by just ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Instead, they should be open-ended to gain deeper insights. This hit me hard because, in the past, I had asked people if they “liked” my business idea, and naturally, they said yes. But as I learned, this doesn’t mean they would actually pay for it. The real validation happens when customers express a real problem that my product or service can solve.
Another key lesson was about conducting face-to-face interviews effectively. While surveys and online forms are useful, nothing beats the raw and authentic feedback from talking directly to potential customers. I was reminded that these conversations should focus on their pain points rather than leading them to agree with my idea. This part made me rethink how I approach market research. Instead of seeking validation for what I want to hear, I should listen to what the market needs.
The ‘Mom Test’ concept was another highlight for me. It made so much sense—don’t pitch your idea directly, but instead, ask about the customer’s experiences and struggles. The goal is to understand their needs, not to sell your idea upfront. I realized that many entrepreneurs, including myself, make the mistake of selling too early instead of learning first.
Reflecting on this lecture, my biggest ‘aha moment’ was that customer validation is not a one-time process but an ongoing effort. It’s about continuously refining my idea based on real feedback. It’s not about proving myself right but about discovering what actually works.
This session reshaped my mindset. Moving forward, I now understand that the market dictates success, not just my passion or assumptions. I’m ready to go out there and ask the right questions, listen actively, and build something that truly matters.

Conversations That Matter: Exploring the Heartbeat of Your Users - A Journey into Customer Validation Interviews
Tumblr media
Following the nod from our instructor after a successful pitch for our app, WeFetch, and the anticipation building up for our final midterms presentation, our team eagerly dived into the heart of our user community. We split into pairs, just like we did before, aiming for a more intimate connection with our potential customers scattered around the Central Mindanao University (CMU) campus.
Tumblr media
Wandering through the grounds, we were fortunate to engage in candid conversations with various individuals, each sharing their unique insights on WeFetch. Our app, inspired by the likes of Angkas and FoodPanda, aims to go beyond conventional boundaries, offering an array of services such as transportation, food delivery, and even the option to send personalized items to someone special. The richness of our interviews went beyond a mere exchange of opinions; it delved into the potential impact of WeFetch on people's lives. The heartening feedback we received during these conversations echoed the sentiment that WeFetch isn't just about services; it's about creating opportunities. Whether you're a student looking for a part-time gig or someone seeking full-time employment, WeFetch opens its doors, provided you have a driver's license and get the green light from our system.
Tumblr media
Amidst the positive vibes, we also encountered valuable suggestions, particularly around the user interface. Some shared concerns about the potential learning curve, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that WeFetch is effortlessly navigable for everyone. This feedback resonated with us, underlining the need to make our app not just innovative but also inclusive.
One standout theme that emerged was the impact WeFetch could have on student life. The convenience it offers, especially for those with dorms situated far from the campus or those attending night classes, struck a chord. Beyond being a job provider, WeFetch became a beacon of safety, ensuring that students could book a ride or service anytime, anywhere within Central Mindanao University.
These conversations weren't just about data collection; they were about building connections, understanding stories, and weaving the human experience into the fabric of WeFetch. As we gear up for our final pitch, these encounters continue to guide us, making WeFetch not just a technological solution but a human-centric one.

CUSTOMER VALIDATION
In the past few weeks, we have conducted an interview for our Empathy Map. An empathy map is a collaboration tool teams may use to gain a deeper insight into their customers. In this way, we can test our hypothesis, if people from different age groups needs a Security App or not. It answers the questions:
1. Who are we empathizing with?
2. What do they need to do?
3. What do they see?
4. What do they say?
5. what do they do?
6. what do they hear?
7. what do they think and feel?
For question 1, the target market for the services offered by the HelpMe App is the general. It may be a child, woman, man or elderly who cares about their safety and security. As long as they’re technologically equipped and knows how to use the certain app.
For question 2, our customers need to Download the app, Know the features and services offered by the app, investing on this application that will ensure one’s safety, not to skip the advertisements on app, and Subscribe for Premium Offers to unlock other unique features.
For question 3, most of them answered that they have observe some apps that helps you in times of danger. They also don’t know anyone that carry self defense weapon and they are worried about their safety when they are alone.
For question 4, they said that they will avoid dangerous places, defend, ask for help and avoid going out at night.
For question 5, some knows self defense, such as boxing, arnis, karate and praying. When in trouble they answered that the first thing they do is to ask for help, run, and think.
For question 6, they haven’t heard any security mobile apps and they don’t know someone who is using one. Most of them haven’t heard any advice that they should consider having a security app.
For question 7, most of them feel scared when walking alone at night. They also think that they are not always safe.
To determine if our pitch is marketable, find out what it looks like and how it feels like to live life with danger from the perspective of our subject. HelpMe offers immediate security, but its functions would be obsolete if people tell each other that they are safe on their own. Based on the answers of our respondent, it is concluded that most of the people (adult, teenager, children) need a security app for their safety.
And so, the group can agree that the venture behind HelpMe proves marketable relevance.
We have also discussed in our first lecture series about the “Intellectual Property”. Intellectual property (IP) is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. The types of IP include: Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks, Franchises, Trade Secrets, utility model, & industrial design.
Act No. 8293, an Act prescribing the Intellectual Property Code and establishing the Intellectual Property Office, providing for its powers and functions, and for other purposes
I have learned that in order to claim that certain intellectual property, you have to register it first to the intellectual property office of the Philippines (IPOPHL). The number of years that it will be effective or ‘legally licensed’, depends on the type of intellectual property that you’ll register.
Intellectual property is important especially in starting your business because it protects your ideas, businesses, inventions against infringement by others.

Entrepreneurial Mind blog post #2
Customers, the heart of any business. Their approval is the lifeline of the business. How they react to a product can make or break a business.
Starting a business is not easy as 1,2,3 there are several things that needs to be overlooked before introducing something to the market. On top of the list is the customers, their validation is the fuel to the business. As depicted on the marshmallow activity, prioritizing your customers first will make the business stand through time. Building a good pasta structure that is enough to support the weight of the marshmallow. The marshmallow serve as the representation of the customers while the pasta structure is the product. If the structure is not strong enough to support mallow the tower will not stand no matter what. Just like the customers, their satisfaction and positive perception on the quality and value of the product is essential in the viability of the business.
Identifying a problem and Looking for solutions is the first step in starting a business but it is also important to validate whether the customers will accept or reject the proposed solution.

UNDERSTANDING PEOPLE NEEDS
my team and I conducted an interview to a random merchandiser in the groceries store to validate our idea to make a specific android app. Our proposed idea was a PLANOGRAM with online Reporting - since the problem of the common merchandiser nowadys is manual reporting and the layout or visual diagram is sometimes confused them, so to solve this problem we have come up with this solution.
In our app we have this features that will display the desired placement of product in a groceries store according to its category, we also want to have it converted into a pdf form so it will easily printed and give it to the merchandiser since when we conducted our interview we learned that they will just given a sheet of paper with an excell format of the display that they will need to follow, and sometimes the measurement and mass of the shelves is incorrect, we also learned that they need to report manually the progress of the product to thier boss weekly, quarterly and monthly so instead of passing a manual report why not do it in their phone, it will be hassle free and it also save time since they need to pass it during thier rest day.
My team and decided to have an interview not only with the merchandiser but also to the employeer/agency for us to have a full information about what we are going to do, so that we will know what specific goal we were going to achieve. It will also help us widen our idea in our project.
Interacting with different people was never easy, some are friendly, some are snob and some are strict but overall we learned that it is really important to have a customer validation because what we think or what we design is not really necessary, convenient and helpful to them. It also important to have a conversation to the people who really know and experienced the problem for us to understand the problem and come up with the right solution.
