Le Tour and its legacy

Earlier this year the Tour de France came to Yorkshire. It was truly amazing. Not only did everyone seem so excited about cycling, but there was a whole cultural festival around it too and a great sense of the community coming out together, it was just fantastic.

But what has the legacy of the Tourβs visit to Yorkshire been? Here are some of my thoughts.
Firstly, I think that a lot of people seem to have taken up cycling, and I include myself in that as a recent convert to road cycling. There are just people on the roads all the time and membership of cycling clubs is increasing too.
There have been some investments in infrastructure, many roads were resurfaced in the run up to the Tour and new cycle lanes are popping up around Leeds, see below. This is great, but we still need more. And a challenge that I donβt feel has been addressed by the worldβs greatest cycle raceβs visit to the area is the attitude of many drivers towards cyclists. There is still an inherent unwillingness to share the road space and a general view of cyclists as an inconvenience, rather than valid and valued road users. Letβs hope that can change.Β
