okay i promised id do it and im doing it: Explaining The Plot Of That AU I’m Vague About: The Post

(as i was preparing to write this i actually got my 250th follower, which slapped)

so i’m just gonna start with the simple version, which is this: it’s a rebel AU which primarily centers around the tallest, who are both defective. they give up on trying to make any meaningful changes as figureheads, and instead direct their attention to being involved with the “neo defect revolution,” or NDR. they do manage to make one change as tallest- there is a garbage dump planet turned into a sanctuary for defectives (who in this au are executed once discovered,) and eventually enough of the populace finds out about it that the tallest have to deal with it. they finesse their way into kicking it out of the empire, so now it’s its own planet with its own rules, governments, and most importantly, immigration policies and protections

a lot of stuff happens and it’s gonna be structured using arcs, and each arc has a separate protagonist/deuteragonist/tritagonist lineup (but that doesnt mean the same lineup won’t be used multiple times!) and yes the insane list of OCs are for this au alone: some arcs are very OC-centric, some have OCs as supporting characters, and a couple are all-OC or mostly-OC. 

its going to be very longform and it’ll span from the tallest’s elite training days to twenty years after zim arrives on earth. (the 20 year gap btwn zim arriving on earth and the story proper isnt as tightly plotted as later tho.) the point is to see how a revolution on the scale of the NDR works, who was fucked over by defact laws, who was fucked over by other laws, etc. theres a lot of lore and a lot of headcanons i made for this AU and even a conlang. i am a being of hubris. itll be a series of fics, some multichapter and some oneshots. 

the series as a whole is gonna be called Invader Zim: Annexed or just Annexed for short. its a pun on an irken word that sounds similar but means the exact opposite. i am not explaining more bc itll be explained in the fic itself. but thats why the tag for it is #anx lmao

i didnt mean for this to be as long as it got but under the cut im gonna breakdown some of the early arcs:

so it all starts with a fanfic called Love Is The H-Word (no the “h-word” isn’t “hell.) it centers around red and purple as elites-in-training, who do a little whoopsie and have an egg. purple doesnt wanna smuggle it into a smeetery, bc then he’ll never see it again, so they go to the defect sanctuary (still a part of the empire at this point.) purple knows he’s defective while red has a hard time accepting that he is as well, due to events from his past. but being around all these other defects are starting to wear down his denial, and the fic is all about that. it also sets up some plot stuff, like how defects adopted a self-identifier in the word “heretic,” hence the sanctuary being named, “heretirk.” (hey look my url!) (no, the “h-word” is not heretic, either.) 

i dont wanna say what happens in that fic bc spoilers, but stuff Happens. its also when we meet some ocs that end up being important, and the existence of others are foreshadowed. this is also where we meet the tallests’ future advisor, rarl kove, for the first time, as a local who decides to keep them company. purple bonds with kove due to their shared interest in politics, while red reluctantly bonds with titch, a young irken (a smeet in heretirken standards, an adult in imperial standards- did i mention he and red are roughly the same age? lol) who is interested in military stuff and thrill-seeking and general destruction. titch is pissed because he claims his father is stealthing on devastis as a military commander, but won’t let titch sneak in as a soldier, as titch is deaf. 

(fun facts: in the au, “titch” is regional slang for “a little bit.” ironically, titch the character is above-average in height.)

due to titch’s deafness, he developed “gesturespeak,” irken sign language, so he can communicate. this existing becomes important later

a oneshot called invade the system is right after h-word in publishing order. it details zim’s exploits in leaving foodcourtia, where he was assigned and infiltrating the invading academy he eventually graduates from (in this au, zim is too short to be an invader, which sucks because the hight minimums for the military are really short to begin with lmao)

the fic chronoligically after H-Word focuses on red and purple being back in their platoon on devastis, specifically red navigating his training and his relationships with two defective platoonmates, pon and zi (who are in h-word a little,) after the realization that he too is defective. it also focuses on how the irken military works, and how they train their soldiers. 

the first arc overall focuses on red and purple going thru training and such, and ends after they graduate and are on the field, working to get commander rank. (they planned to gain commander rank then leave and go back to heretirk to train an army there, as heretirk has.... no army.) in the middle of this, they’re pulled out and told they are to become the next tallest. they debate over staying and taking the job or just running to heretirk, and they ultimately decide to stay.

the next arc i call the “bridge,” tbh. its less tightly plotted than the other arcs; fics are spread apart from each other chronologically and all that. it spans the time after the tallest being appointed to a little after zim arrives on earth. it also has a couple of anthologies focusing on imperial defects- each chapter is a new character. these guys are all important and the easiest way for me to introduce their backstories without cluttering everything up is anthology style, lmao. other things that happen are a look into how the tallest work, eventually culminating with the resolution of the tallest having to Deal With Heretirk, tenn’s rescue from meekrob, and zim on earth obtaining a half-irken smeet named pip due to stealing an Unethical Science Experiment from dib (which is pip.) the bridge is basically just. “heres some stuff that happens between point A and point B so when we get to point B you’re not confused as all hell.” 

the next arc focuses on zim. in the first fic, pip is sick and zim is trying to get into his neighbor’s pants, to cope. this basically sets up that zim in this au has no idea how to find personal fulfillment in living- he’s only OK if he focuses on pleasing someone else, be it taking care of pip or doting on the neighbor, some rando human named piqu (pronounced, “peek.”) this is mainly a cute romance story with the underlying veneer of “a child is slowly and painfully dying” in the background. fun! 

without spoiling the circumstances, zim and pip end up on heretirk, which at this point is its own independent planet. pip is in the hospital for most of it so zim has to do his own thing. computer fans rejoice bc hes basically zims dad at this point, who tells him to go outside and get some fresh air and talk to the locals instead of schmooping or screaming in anxiety. im sneakily introducing more characters like ini, the “next-gen zim;” a short bio-engineer (she works on PAKs) who was constantly passed over by everyone because they dont trust someone that short or they dont trust someone that spazzy, even though shes actually brilliant. also her brother mo, who’s a pilot that NOBODY will teach military-class ships to (at this point, HTK has a population of ex-military that had their old ships, but still no formal army) because he doesnt talk and they think hes “slow” as a result. for the curious, he is physically able to talk most times, he just doesnt like it. zim ends up teaching him how to fly military-class which ends up being important laterrr

no really, theyre quadruplets. named ini, myni, minie, and mo. these are real characters. 

minie isnt introduced till later. shes too cool to be the side character in someone elses arc. she is feel uncomfortable when we are not about her.

myni is busy palling around with pip and pip’s friend “elly” (real name elevenn, with two N’s.) elly is a half-meekrob War Crime Baby and tenn’s smeet. he has vision problems (he can “see” energy signatures of things, as opposed to conventional sight. everything is monochrome and he has to really focus to see like, words on a paper. also fuck tablets) but the trade-up is telekinetic powers (that he cant use too much or his brain will melt. fun!) this isnt relevant until the arc AFTER zim’s, where they end up poking around a historical site due to myni’s interest in that kind of thing, and they find logs of an old revolution (that was actually pretty successful in their goal, before they were caught and executed,) that lead them to a man named lefy. he helps with revolutions and helped these guys, and the trio go to seek him out; myni because he wants to impress his parents with helping them, pip because after they’ve recovered enough to walk around and do stuff, feel like they need to justify the choice to save their life and make their dad proud and all that, elly because he doesnt want pip to get hurt and die. And thats where the stuff REALLY starts happening and i cant tell u more sorry

this seemed kind of disjointed but thats bc i cant really be too detailed otherwise id like.... spoil it lmfao. but thats the summary of the first few arcs.

Creaky Floors

Summary: Barbara accidentally scares the (un)life out of Beetlejuice and triggers some traumatic memories. Luckily Charles knows how to cool the demon down. (Rated Teen for Language.)

This was supposed to be light-hearted and silly. But rather suddenly it got dark.

Beetlejuice started tossing and turning in zis bed just after the rest of the house settled in to sleep. In zis opinion, it was always too quiet in the Maitland-Deetz house at night. Averagely, the only sounds to be heard were quaint snores from the living, the peaceful purrs of Sandy the Sandworm, and the humming of assorted appliances (mostly the refrigerator Beetlejuice had accidentally broken). On this night, the creaking and rustling of a certain demon in zis bed was among these noises. 

It was past midnight when said demon finally settled. Zis head hung over the side of the bed, the sheets tangled around zim. Beetlejuice laid there for a while before realizing ze was craving ice-cream. Pistachio, lime and chocolate ice-cream. With ants for sprinkles. And... maybe some worms for a slimy garnish. Definitely whipped cream. Ze decided with finality. 

Just thinking about zis midnight snack sent saliva dripping from the ghouls mouth and into the luxurious cream carpeting. 

It took Beetlejuice some time before ze was finally released from the sheets. Said sheets had stripped zim of his socks and boxers in the struggle. Beetlejuice stood and shrugged, glancing at the mess of blankets and pillows. Ze grabbed zis pastel green robe from the back of the door and began zis descent to the kitchen. Ze sunk through the floor and phased through the walls, making quick work to get to zis destination. 

When Beetlejuice finally made it to the kitchen, ze pulled out the big popcorn bowl and an ice-cream scoop. Said ice-cream scoop was zis and Lydia's, adorned with a spider handle Delia refused to even look at. Beetlejuice trotted across the kitchen and retrieved the three ice-cream tubs ze required, not even realizing the looming presence behind zim until it was too late.

Being ghosts, Barbara and Adam Maitland had no need to sleep. So when they did lay down and curl up in their bed, they were aware of everything going on around them. On the floor below them, Charles snored, Delia breathed slowly, Lydia whistle-snored softly, and Beetlejuice tossed and turned. 

Barbara leaned over Adam to check the time and found that it was past midnight. "What's wrong, hon?" 

"I'm going to go check on Beej. Ze hasn't settled down all night," with that, Barbara gave her husband a kiss and slipped out of bed. Her gauzy white nightdress caught on the bedpost and Adam chuckled as she tried to free herself. "Adam!" Barbara whined playfully as he continued snickering. 

"Oh, alright," Adam huffed with a smile, flicking Barbara's nightdress free. Barbara turned on her heel without so much as a 'thank you'. 

The ghostly blonde made it down the hallway just to see the tips of violet hair vanish through the hardwood floor. Barbara sighed and crept down the hall to the stairs, watching from the landing as Beetlejuice floated through the walls. Ze headed for the kitchen. This can't be good. Barbara sighed, phasing through the banister and floating down to the floor. She snuck quietly to the kitchen, watching the demon from behind.

The ice-cream tubs fell from Beetlejuice's hands and split open, leaking their contents on the floor. Zis hair shot fully white with a gut-wrenching, ear-splitting, heart-stopping scream. Barbara's head was sent swimming as the demon's scream finally ceased and ze sunk to the floor before the refrigerator. "Holy fuckin' Satan, Goddamn fuckin' Christ!" Ze took a moment to compose zimself. "What the fuck, Barbara?!" 

Beetlejuice looked up at her, hair still as white as the refrigerator behind zim. Ze leaned forward, resting on zis hands and knees, melted ice-cream soaking through zis robe. Ze was breathing incredibly heavily despite not needing to. 

Beetlejuice looked up at Barbara. Except... it wasn't Barbara. 

Her hair was a grey and white beehive. Her suit was stained crimson, the edge of her skirt the deepest and darkest of burgundys, almost black. Her throat was slit and oozed putrid, coiling smoke. Her frown was menacing and frigid, sharp fangs poking at her lower lip. 

Beetlejuice shook zis head and looked up again. 

Her eyes were warm, soft and concerned, grey in the light of the moonlit kitchen. Her gauzy, ankle length nightdress flapped in the wind from the open kitchen window. Her beautiful platinum-looking locks brushed against her elbows as she sat down in front of him. 

Barbara reached out and laid a gentle hand on zis "I didn't mean to scare you, Beej." Beetlejuice glanced down at their hands. 

The one laid atop zis clenched, sharp talons digging into zis flesh, deep. Wrinkled white skin pulled taught over her knuckles and Beeltejuice screamed as her nails broke zis skin. The more ze screamed, the deeper and deeper they plunged, eventually hitting bone and piercing through it, shattering zis wrist. The demon let out a wailing, painful cry, collapsing into the arms in front of him. 

Said arms were soft and soothing, rubbing circles into zis back as chattering went on above the two. Beetlejuice curled up in Barbara's arms, letting the coldness of her ghostly form cool zim. Finally, ze calmed down and the conversation above the two spectres became clear.

Adam and Lydia had been the first two to arrive at the scene. Adam had simply dropped through the floor and into the kitchen. Lydia had practically fallen down the stairs after hearing her demonic sibling's third scream. Beetlejuice wailed pitifully in front of Barbara, the floor covered in murky greens and browns. Lydia and Adam were still looking on in shock when the other living residents arrived. Charles was the first to break over the scene. 

"Barbara what happened?" So she told them. 

"I wanted to check on zim. I must've been to quiet and scared him. Ze keeps calling me Juno-" the demon wailed again at the mention of zis mother. "-I must've brought back some horrible memories. I've never seen Beej so scared. What do I do?!" 

"Barbara, dear, calm down," Adam laid his hands on her shoulders. "Beej needs you calm right now. We dont want to freak zim out further." 

"You guys go back to bed," Charles told the congregation. "I'll stay with zim until ze calms down. Ze's most comfortable with me when ze gets panicky," Charles began ushering Delia and Lydia away who both protested. Adam gave Barbara a peck and left of his own accord. "Lydia."

"...Please go back to bed. We will talk about this at dinner tomorrow." Charles. 

"Dad, please! Ze's my best friend and ze's obviously not okay right now!" Lydia. 

"Lydia, darling, listen to your father. He can handle Beej." Delia. There was a huff and the clacking of slippers as Lydia moped away. Two more sets of footsteps followed and Beetlejuice looked up. The only ones left in the room were zim, Barbara and Charles. The latter sat down next to the two and took a palm-sized chewy star out of his pocket. Beetlejuice took it and sat up, letting go of Barbara. Charles laid a hand on Barbara's shoulder and she left them, socked footsteps completely silent. Charles got up and shuffled around the kitchen as Beetlejuice sat on the floor, chewing on his star. 

Soon enough, the floor was clear of ice-cream and Charles was helping his demonic companion to zis feet. The two made their way upstairs to the office and settled down on the plush rug by the bookcase. Charles sat criss-cross against the bookcase while Beetlejuice laid on his stomach, chewing on his toy and twining the carpet fibers through his claws. 

They sat together in peaceful silence until Beetlejuice's simulated breathing returned to being non-existent. The demon's hair was shifting to a deep blue with its tips remaining white. Charles leaned forward and gently pried the chew toy away from Beetlejuice and handed zim a bag of neon gummy worms instead. Finally, someone spoke, voice hushed. 

"Can you tell me what happened, Beej?" The person in question nodded slowly. Then shook zis head frantically, hair frosting vermillion. "Hey, hey," Charles hovered a hand over Beetlejuice's shoulder. Ze nodded and he laid his hand on zis shoulder. "Don't get mad, now. Remember?" Charles reached over to the bookcase and pulled out a thick binder, opening it. 

Inside was pieces of laminated paper with drawings on them. Said drawings were done by Lydia and Barbara and were beautifully detailed. Beetlejuice took the binder from Charles and began to page through it. 

Ze found the numbers and pulled the '2' from the page. Ze flipped back to the people section and grabbed Barbara and Juno. Ze placed the '2' between them and switched Barbara and Juno around a few times. "Barbara changed to Juno? And Juno changed to Barbara?" Beetlejuice nodded aggressively. "Is that why you screamed?" Ze shook zis head, paging through the binder again. 

It only took over a dozen tries to finally piece together the story from the demon's side. Especially considering Beetlejuice's inability to read. When finally ze closed the binder with a snap, Charles sighed in relief. "I'm getting tired so I'm going to head to bed. Wake us up if you need anything, okay?" The demon nodded and Charles stood up, making his way out, when suddenly Beetlejuice was tugging on his sleeve from behind him. 

"Ca-can, can I sl-slee-sleep, sleep in you-your, your roo-room, room? Can I slee-sleep, sleep in your room?" Ze muttered carefully, tripping over his words. Ze was twiddling with the hem of Charles' pajama sleeve, unthreading it. Charles nodded. 

"Of course you can, come on."

The next morning, when Charles left for work, Beetlejuice was still curled up in zis blanket nest in the master bedroom. Ze had slept perfectly sound through the rest of the night.

You may notice that Beej's pronouns are ze/zim. I wanted to see how I felt about zim having different pronouns. I like the idea but I'm not completely sold.

The binder Beej and Charles used is called a PEC or AAC book. They're used for nonverbal communication and I realized that Beej would super benefit from it. I'm hoping to one day get myself one!

bedrooms answered but! Enny and Deux are on a spaceship and I think that’s very cool :).

what does your OC keep in a special drawer?

Enny keeps her old creepypasta fanfiction, some Private Notebooks, and a selection of fuckign knives. you never know. West keeps a memory card with a bunch of pictures on it and a cryptid clip plushie Fern gave them. Deux keeps some specific old recipes and a dumb sticky note from an old friend. Hope keeps family photos. Aila keeps a diary hidden away among a bunch of trinkets she claims are good luck charms. Luca's entire room is a special drawer bcause that’s on him if he forgets where he put something important but he does have everything with his deadname hidden away. Enzo makes a point not to carry sentimental items.

what is your OC’s relationship with their mother?

Hope misses her very much but it was weird. she loves her mom but she was super overbearing and didn’t seem to have a grasp on ages outside of “child???” so Hope got real rebellious. she really loves her mom and wishes she hadn’t been such a little shit but still that was like. real weird right? yeah. Deux never really vibed with her mom. always WANTED to but her mom just did not interact with her much. so there’s really no difference now that she’s gone. Mell loved her mom! she also got real rebellious and her mom was concerned about it but they got along. her mom supported her :). Cole was. uh. well his mom was. fine? sorta weird. he loves her! but. well. his feelings are mixed on her. it felt like maybe she didn’t want to deal with him sometimes? Texas loves their mom :). country music bad but their mom’s nice and loves them very much. Pistol doesn’t get along with zis mom. feels like she only interacts with zim to try and spite zis father. :(.

AILA MISSES HER DAD......... they VIBED. they were always super close and Aila shares his sense of humor. he was a good dad to her. ENNY ON THE OTHER FUCKING HAND. Enny hopes her dad is rotting in hell. fuck him. he abused her and she fucking hates him for it. she hates him. she fucking. she can’t think about it for too long. it makes her upset. sometimes she wonders if he knew that everything he did was super fucked up. Texas loves their dad :). he can be a lil protective sometimes but they know he loves them a lot. also he gives good hugs. Pistol idolized zis dad but ze’s slowly realizing that uh. zis dad isn’t great? also doesn’t seem to like to interact with zim. he doesn’t really seem to care. and uh. never initiates interactions. and. huh. Sarthraruus come take care of ur kid I s2g-

how many siblings does your OC have and what is their relationship with them?

Aila has one, kind of, maybe? yes. one. Kodi’s her sorta-brother. they’re close but don’t really talk about being siblings. ever. it’s like yep that’s a friend. Enny also has a sibling, and that’s alt Kodi. they’re p close and sometimes they just barge into each other’s rooms to complain about something and swap snacks and stuff. they don’t hang out THAT much but they can rely on each other. Theo and Fate are self-proclaimed twins and they’re really close. they tease each other a lot. in their debut in the superhero AU, Theo constantly had Fate in his hivemind mind link and Fate would share her emotions with him. they rely on each other!

who is the mother and/or father figure in your OC’s life?

a lot of the kids don’t have one any more, but I still lose it at Echo just going “yep I’ll be taking care of Enny now” despite being around the same age as her. rip to Enn[DACTED] but Orca’s dad is Mike. Spike’s parent is Orca. Pistol’s bio parents are still alive but ze ends up seeing Fern and Ulfort as zis actual trusted adults :) also Jody but in a lantern. kinda. Texas’s parents are also Fern and Ulfort. in some AUs every kid’s dad is Ross. luv robot dad. West gets adopted by Enny and [REDACTED]!
