i envision pre-speech contest kazuma to be very similar in personality to post-return kazuma - stoic, intense, and fixed on his goals. it makes sense - his life at this point revolves around avenging his father, and it's strongly implied he has little connections to others, despite growing up with the mikotobas.

meeting ryunosuke softens him in a sense - he has a presence in his life that is positive and significant. he has someone who makes him want to be better. he finally allows himself to have a human connection, and this grounds him.

without his memories, traveling to london, it's no wonder he regressed to his prior state. without ryunosuke's presence, he is back to being single-mindedly fixed on his goals. when they reunite, he intentionally puts distance between them (perhaps unconsciously), still blinded in pursuit of these goals. and then of course, ryunosuke is the one to bring him back to reality, and reminds him of the happier kazuma he so briefly was.

the boisterous, playful kazuma is a kazuma that only flourishes when he has his best friend in his life. when he ALLOWS himself to have that connection, and feel the joy of life, instead of obstinately marching towards vengeance.

FELLOW TRANSFEM BAROK TRUTHEEEEEEEERRRR!!!!!!

I haven't thought about her in a while because it's a bit difficult to think about blorbos in general atm but this was like an electric shock to my dormant brain, so thank you so much for your ask, it made me very happy.

Just in case you haven't finished both games yet, my thoughts contain SPOILERS:

The thing about headcanoning Barok as post-canon transfem for me is not that it has like any canon basis or anything (like for example Susato's dislike of her birth gender due to its social standing) but just emotionally, I think it's a future that Barok deserves.

For me personally, being trans is all about autonomy, having the right and power to decide who you are by yourself and for yourself. And I don't think Barok ever really had that.

Barok is part of the aristocracy which comes with social expectations and with the way Barok acts, his indifference to being in danger and his loyalty to a system that is destroying him, I can't imagine he ever was particularly rebellious to the norms he has to follow. The way he clings to Klint, Barok's description of him as his "guiding light" and how he lets himself be pushed around like a pawn by Stronghart give me the impression that Barok also never took opportunities to find out or determine who he is. So in short, because of Barok's noble upbringing and his willingness to be defined by and through others, I don't think he ever had the chance or took the initiative to create an identity for himself (potentially highlighted by the fact that except for Albert, nobody calls him by his first name but by his noble title, family name and job title instead).

At the end of the game, Barok stands before nothing, his future is uncertain (which is also true for most other major characters in TGAA but I just love Barok the most and hey, you can make all the others trans too!) and the things he believed in and clung to destroyed. He doesn't know what to do and it's Kazuma who tells him to keep prosecuting, it's Yujin from whom he learns about Iris. And I think all these uncertainties boil down to the big question of "Who am I?", a question I believe Barok has never posed himself because he was always told who he was - a nobleman, a prosecutor, the Reaper.

So because being openly trans changed a lot in my life for the better and made me happy, I just think it'd be nice if Barok, who has been through so much, could feel that too. Even though everything is horrible and scary right now and it will not be easy, she finally has the chance and power to start anew and create a life that she wants to lead, and I just think she deserves to go out of that process being happy with herself. That's essentially it. Plus a bit of projection when I was struggling with gender questioning feelings lol (turns out when you write about a trans woman happy with her womanhood and identity, you learn that being a woman isn't as bad as you thought!)

And although I think Barok is not the type of person who would be open about it (as much as it was possible back then), I believe she'd be satisfied with only close friends and her family knowing because these are the people who matter the most. I generally find queer history and the lives of queer people in the past very fascinating, the way they understood themselves and their identities, the terms they used, how society perceived them and just the fact that they existed in general and sometimes much more openly that one might expect.

Also I think Barok being transfem can make her relationship with Lady Baskerville and Susato really interesting. As far as we know, Barok didn't have a lot of women in his life who shaped him in comparison to men like his brother, so Lady Baskerville entering his life through Klint would be his first up-front confrontation with womanhood. And as for Susato, she's the complete opposite of Barok: while Barok would experience her womanhood as liberation, it's very much and very explicitly an obstacle for Susato. So that provokes a lot of thoughts in my brain.

i'm replaying susato's case and one thing that stood out to me is that when you first play through it you don't really pay attention to the fact that mikotoba's your legal assistant even though he's a doctor without any actual legal qualifications bc well, it's ace attorney and it's the tutorial case and he's susato's dad. but after it gets revealed that he was sholmes' partner, his competence in the courtroom suddenly makes so much sense. he's been solving murders for 6 years, of course he knows how this goes

The first part of Kazuma’s plan was a success. Susato’s grandmother was sitting on the front veranda in the sun as always, and he was able to slip around through the back undetected. The house was as still as he expected in the middle of the day, but he still crept quietly through the hall toward his room. Now he just had to get cleaned up so he could—later—explain the situation to Mikotoba on his own terms.

“Kazuma? Is that you?”

He blew out a breath. It was Professor Mikotoba’s voice coming from his study. Kazuma heard footsteps behind him as Mikotoba came into the hallway.

“Yes, I—you’re home early,” Kazuma said, trying to glance back while keeping the bruised side of his face carefully turned away.

“I forgot the exams so I thought I’d come home for lunch.”

“Right. Well, excuse me, I just need to…” he gestured toward his bedroom.

“Kazuma? Will you look at me, please?”

Closing his eyes, Kazuma sighed through his nose. He slowly turned and faced the professor, whose eyes widened momentarily as he took in the black eye, dirt, and specks of blood littering his face and hands. Kazuma darted his own gaze away.

After a moment, Mikotoba asked, “Were you sent home for fighting?”

Kazuma tried not to squirm under his astute gaze. The man had an uncanny ability to infer whatever was going on. He wasn’t the most observant, but the things he did notice he instantly put together into the truth. Over the years of living in the Mikotoba household, Kazuma had learned he couldn’t get much past him, not that it stopped him from trying.

“…Yes.”

“Right.” Mikotoba looked him up and down. “Are you actively bleeding anywhere?”

If he asked, that must have meant the cut on his face had scabbed over. “No.”

Mikotoba nodded. “Go get cleaned up. Then come into my office.”

“Yes, Professor,” Kazuma murmured before making his temporary escape.
