 Die Wassernixe Rusalka verliebt sich, wie es Wassernixen zu tun pflegen, in einen menschlichen Prinzen, und tritt, um an Land leben zu können, der mächtigen Zauberin ihre Stimme ab. Insofern macht das lustig doppelnd und spiegelnde Drag-Queens mit-perfektem-tschechischem-Lip-Sync-Konzept in der Oper schon Sinn, diese Wasserwesen neigen ja auch zu exaltierten Kostümierungen und man spiegelt sich bei ihrer Beobachtung. Und so kann die Stimme die Nixe dann auch tatsächlich verlassen. Wie es aber eben auch immer so ist, findet der Prinz sie ohne Stimme langweilig. Sie hat aber auch wirklich sehr schön gesungen. Und überhaupt: Endlich wieder Dragqueens. Endlich wieder Oper!

La Royal Opera ha reposat per tercera vegada la producció (fluixeta per cert) de Nicholas Hytner del Don Carlo de Verdi, producció que també comparteix amb el MET de Nova York i que el teatre novaiorquès també la va emetre, com la inicial del ROH, en la seva temporada cinematogràfica.

La versió és la de Modena, és a dir amb els cinc actes originals, sense el ballet i cantada en italià, que malgrat no ser l’original i per tant la millor, s’hi apropa perquè al menys tenim el bellíssim acte de Fontainebleau,

En aquesta ocasió la ROH ha hagut d’improvisar a darrera hora una reestructuració del cast, ja que dos de les principals figures del repartiment van cancel·lar a pocs dies de l’estrena: la soprano nord-americana Kristin Lewis ha substituït a l’esplèndida Krassimira Stoyanova, mentre que els barítons Christoph Pohl i Simone Piazzola han substituït al inicialment previst Ludovic Tézier.

La reposició també representava el debut en es respectius rols del tenor nord-americà Bryan Hymel com a Don Carlo i la del baix rus Ildar Abdrazakov, com a Filippo II.

Mentre que la substitució baritonal s’ha resolt de manera més que satisfactòria, la de la soprano no ha igualat l’alçada verdiana de Stoyanova.

En el seu conjunt l’escoltada radiofònica resulta una mica freda, segurament perquè Bertrand de Billy només ofereix ofici i després de les direccions intenses, passionals i profundament teatrals i dramàtiques d’Antonio Pappano, la correcció poc involucrada del director francès frena la grandesa de la partitura a una decebedora correcció. L’orquestra i menys el Cor de la ROH ho resolen amb gran dignitat tot i que a vegades tenen feina per quadrar i això si no és bo mai, en un Don Carlo, encara menys.

El debut de Bryan Hymel en el rol protagonista es salda amb un esperançador èxit que de ben segur podrà reafirmar-se en un futur amb una interpretació més arrodonida,sobretot en el control de l’emissió més distingit i una homogeneïtzació dels colors, però Hymel va lluir esplendor vocal, legato i control del fraseig i els seus amplis arcs amb fermesa i un bon domini tècnic. El lament planyívol amb el que acompanya la interpretació l’ajuda en aquesta ocasió a configurar un rol tan torturat. L’acabament en agut del duo amb Posa, imitant a Corelli, se l’hagués pogut estalviar.

A Christoph Pohl només el coneixia com a notable Wolfram del Tannhäuser però amb aquest inesperat Rodrigo també confirma l’esperançadora vessant italiana de la seva carrera, amb un bon estil i una adequació al cant verdià molt més espontània que altres il·lustres col·legues i compatriotes que l’han precedit.

El debut d’Ildar Abdrazakov en el cabdal rol del Rei Felip II, m’ha semblat una interpretació en prou feines embastada, mancada del egregi i autoritari caràcter que s’ha d’imposar en els grans duos amb Rodrigo o l’Inquisidor així com en la gran escena davant la catedral d’Atocha. En les parts més intimes està més convincent i per tant la seva gran ària la resol amb força dignitat però sense transcendència i el resultat global no és reeixit o com a mínim no és el que s’espera d’un baix (ell és més baix baríton) en un dels rols més emblemàtics per aquesta corda. Decepció inesperada.

Quedar-se sense Stoyanova a pocs dies de l’estrena és un entrebanc de difícil solució perquè no anem gaire ben servits de sopranos verdianes i la búlgara és una cantant excepcional en aquests rols de lírica spinto. El recurs d’última hora ha estat Kristin Lewis una cantant de poderosos mitjans i recursos tècnics poc controlats, però sobretot amb una limitadíssima expressivitat i un sentit dramàtic poc consistent. La fredor de la seva interpretació és exasperant. Utilitza mil i un canvis de registre, un registre per altra part molt ampli que ben emès seria envejable, Els pianíssims i les mitges veus si no van acompanyats de sentit dramàtic són un exercici gimnàstic sense interès.

La poderosa i poc refinada Eboli de Ekaterina Semenchuk, una vegada ha passat l’obstacle de les agilitats de la cançó del vel, convenç, però haurem d’esperar a la tardor parisenca per escoltar una Eboli capaç de dotar a aquesta temuda pàgina, de la gràcia i picardia belcantista demanada per Verdi.

A Paata Burchuladze el feia (no sé pas on ho vaig llegir) posat en política i més li valdria dedicar-se als afers parlamentaris del seu país que no pas vociferant un Inquisidor amb una veu caduca i feridora. Sap greu, mai va ser un prodigi de distinció però si un rol podia fer amb autoritat i rotunditat vocal era precisament aquest. Ara ni això i tampoc és tan gran sobretot tenint en compte que els baixos tenen una carrera molt més longeva.

Millor  Andrea Mastroni com a frare/Carlo V, amb una veu més segura i controlada.

Bé la resta en els seus rols de escassa rellevància, tret de la veu del cel que en la seva frase gloriosa en el final del concertant del tercer acte, va tenir feina en fer-se sentir.

Q: What to read Nell: We read works by many different authors. Us members talk often about writers that we like. We often talk about what was memorable in our books, which parts were funny, read together and buy new books together. When one of us discovers a new author we get excited and recommend them to one another.

Q: How many Nell: We finish four or five books a month with ease. Recently it's gone down to one or two books. We want to read more, but we don't have as much time as we wish.

Q: On their list The four members Kim Jongwan, Lee Jaekyung, Lee Junghoon and Jung Jaewon all have different favorites and decide to recommend something each. Whether it lingers in their hearts or their heads, they're all books that left a deep impression on them. They want to speak with other people who have read these books.

Jaewon: The Zahir, Paulo Coelho I'm so happy I found an author like Paulo Coelho. He always gets me thinking about so many things. Among his works, I want to recommend The Zahir, a book about realizations. It's a book that reflects deeply on life and lets us know what we should truly be seeking.

Jaekyung: Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, David Bayles, Ted Orland The two intense words on the cover caught my eye. 'Art', 'Fear', and a tiny 'and'. I was charmed by the combination of those words. I bought it on an impulse, but the content is incredible. It's a book that speaks about 'the fear of art', which anyone who works a creative job, even if it's not big-scale art, can relate to.

Jongwan: Almost Transparent Blue, Ryū Murakami Lots of people think of 'Norwegian Wood' first when they hear the name Ryū Murakami. I like Almost Transparent Blue more, however. Most of all I really like the honest dialogue between the characters, revealing them just as they are. It's like reading about people we know.

Junghoon: So Can You, Mitsuyo Ohira Outcast, suicide survivor, Yakuza's wife, hostess, lawyer... The story of her stormy life is very earnest. Can hitting rock bottom of life make you stronger and braver? If you want to live a proper life, you need to read this book. Reading it in hard times will give you strength.

Jongwan: Blindness, José Saramago Parts of humanity suddenly lose their ability to see. The blind people get put in concentration camps, and crime runs rampant among them. I was completely stunned when reading this book. If I was one of the blind ones, what would I do? It's a book that makes you think about the essence of humanity.
