The Tenant of Wildfell Hall opens with Gilbert Markham telling the story of his meeting Helen who has just moved into his neighborhood after leaving her husband. A fugitive from the law, she lives under an assumed name and tries to avoid the society of her immediate neighbors—Markham and his cohorts. Seen through the lens of Gilbert’s desire, Helen’s character emerges as the archetypal misanthropic stranger, inhabiting a wild and romantic Gothic mansion, her past replete with dark secrets. Brontë has done something astonishingly new: she has created a plausible female Byronic hero, coveted for her very “unfeminine” qualities: inquietude, difficulty, and distance. She is the “mysterious lady” who is so reserved that, “they tried all they could to find out who she was, and where she came from, and all about her, but [no one] ... could manage to elicit a single satisfactory answer ... or throw the faintest ray of light upon her history, circumstances, or connections. Moreover, she was barely civil to them .…” Anne revises Charlotte's Jane Eyre and Emily's Wuthering Heights: it is not Rochester who rules this Thornfield Hall nor is it Heathcliff who lurks about Wuthering Heights seeing ghosts. This time, the woman takes the role of the stormy and seductive artist who charms and mesmerizes the man. Wildfell Hall is a dilapidated, storied mansion, like so many other homes of Gothic literature; it is “cold and gloomy... with its thick stone mullion and little latticed panes, its time-eaten air-holes, and its too lonely, too unsheltered situation” surrounded by trees “half blighted with storms, and looking as stern and gloomy as the hall itself” which “harmonized well with the ghostly legend and dark traditions our old nurse had told us respecting the haunted hall and its departed occupants.” Helen haunts these bleak rooms, and Gilbert longs to redeem her from her dark past and bring her back into the fold, just as Jane yearns to be Rochester's salvation, his earthly paradise.

"A Girl Called Samson" by Amy Harmon

"A Girl Called Samson" is about a girl... named Deborah Samson who wants more out of life than what has been set before her.

Deborah has lived basically all of her life as an indentured servant due to her mother's inability to take care of her and her siblings after their father walked out on them. Deborah's indentured service to her latest family led her to resent womanhood and the limitations it rendered in 18th century America.

These limitations led Deborah to test the chains that held her back from fulfilling her self-proclaimed life's purpose of serving in the Revolutionary Army. And we know, from deductive reasoning and the book's description, that she successfully broke those chains, defied her womanhood, and fought for her young country's independence. Along the way, Deborah experienced extreme loss, love, and acceptance.

"A Girl Called Samson" ultimately disappointed me. I love Amy Harmon and her stories. I love the way she writes about love and hope and courage. This book fell short of my expectations, which were admittedly pretty high. Deborah Samson rejected her womanhood. She was naïve and immature. She was almost totally without feeling, which is the exact opposite of the type of characters Harmon traditionally writes. She fell in love, but even that seemed more like a business transaction than it did a heartfelt desire.

Overall, I would summarize this book as bland. There were some exciting and devastating moments as I read through it, but it wasn't enough to make me love Deborah or her story. In fact, I really didn't like Deborah. She was entirely too dispassionate for someone who had the courage to defy herself and her life's circumstances, dress up like a boy, and fight for a country she claimed to love. I was severely unimpressed with her, and I was fully expecting to fall in love with her. And maybe that made it worse - that my expectations were so high. But Amy Harmon has effectively set such a high standard that I just knew this book was going to be stellar. When it wasn't, it made the sting of disappointment that much worse, I guess.

I still love Amy Harmon. I am still going to be excited for her future works. I still treasure her stories, just not this one so much.

If you're venturing to read this book, I'd say go for it, if you want. If you do end up disappointed however, don't swear off Amy Harmon's books for good. She has a massive arsenal of works that will make your head spin and heart stop.

RELATIONSHIP TO GREER

When you look at Paloma and Greer’s dynamic, it was easy to assume they were two wildly different people who enjoyed challenging each other in every way that they could. They disagree on everything — mostly because they were looking at the world from very different points of views — but there was a part of Paloma that treated their rivalry as some sort of game. At some point, the lines between genuine disapproval and disputing someone for the sake of it blurred, Paloma found herself feeling like she had to dislike something just because Greer liked it. As if being the rival of the Golden Girl gave her a sense of identity, some kind of role that she enjoyed playing.

She loves architecture, she has a habit of staring at buildings and observing them in the middle of a conversation sometimes. Especially if she is visiting a new town. 

Paloma is not very active on social media. She only uses Pinterest and Instagram. Her Instagram is private. She despises TikTok. Please don’t send her any links, she certainly wouldn’t click them.

She is fluent in English and Spanish. She’s learning Italian because she wants to do masters in Italy. Speficially Politecnico di Torino, just because Ettore Sottsass studied there.

It goes without saying Paloma is an art enthusiast, she wants to be so rich one day that she can afford a Basquiat or Kahlo painting.

As much as she loves figure skating, she is not the best member of the club nor the best skater in the room either. She certainly is the weakest link in the team. 

She looooves fashion. Her favorite designers are Prada, Burberry (Tisci’s era of course) and Celine. Unfortunately, she is not rich enough to wear exclusively designer clothes.
