And the Tony Award Goes to...
Tumblr media
Six-Time Tony Winner Audra McDonald, reigning Queen of Broadway
In honor of the Tony nomination announcement today, it's about time I published this post I've had waiting for almost two months now. With 64 Divas in our tournament, they're practically drowning in Tonys. Collectively, 53 Divas have received one or more nominations across four eligible acting categories, and 31 have taken home the prize. And you'll never believe what tumblr's image limit is. 30.
As luck would have it, two Divas won Tonys in the same year and despite what might be the most dramatic height difference possible, Bebe Neuwirth and Janet McTeer were photographed together specifically so I could make this post work 27 years later. (Bebe in heels and Janet in flats, and still...)

The Gilded Age's Broadway Divas: Miss Armstrong (Debra Monk)
Sometimes, a work family is a German mother and her Irish daughter, an English father and his clockmaking son, and a mean old spinster aunt who's only invited to the family holiday parties because she'd bitch for weeks if she wasn't. Miss Armstrong is Agnes's nasty lady's maid who has said exactly one (1) nice thing all season. And I love her.
Tumblr media
At seventy-four, Debra Monk is the oldest woman on The Gilded Age, and the only one with the appropriate hair color to show it. As cantankerous as her mistress with none of the charm, Armstrong is nothing like her fantastic actress. Debra Monk is one of theatre's comedy greats. Much like Katie Finneran, Debra is playing against type. Us theatre buffs know her from Pump Boys and Dinettes (co-author, director, and actress), Company (Joanne), and the ill-fated Nick & Nora alongside Christine Baranski.
An absolute delight of a human being, Deb Monk is a wise-cracking mile-a-minute, raunchy, jokester and deserves praise and recognition for her work.
#1: "Everybody's Girl," (Steel Pier) - My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies (1998)
youtube
Almost every stalwart theatre Diva has her signature song. "Everybody's Girl" is Debra Monk's pride and joy, and she sings it to this day. At her raunchiest yet, she serenades a gleeful audience with her sexual exploits whilst dressed in a black dress and corset that Armstrong would have a coronary over.
The clever lyrics are perfectly paired with her comedic chops. The whole performance is just a delight from start to finish. That exit has me screaming every time. Her performance in the stage show the song originated from netted her a third Tony nomination.
If we do not get a clip of Debra Monk in full Armstrong drag singing this song, what is the point anymore?
#2: "The Ladies Who Lunch," Company (1995)
youtube
Before there was Patti LuPone, but after the great Elaine Stritch, there was Debra Monk as Joanne in the 1995 first Broadway revival of Company. Yes, another Stephen Sondheim. Often forgotten in the Company conversation, this production had a tough act to follow. Nominated for just two Tonys (Best Revival and Best Featured Actress--Veanne Cox, hello, I love you), there's not much that can be said about the 1995 production. It lasted two months, and no one can point me in the direction of any footage with Debra, so here we are.
#3: Debra Monk's Birthday Bash: Totally Hot and a Little Dirty (2014)
youtube
For her 65th birthday, Debra performed in a raucous and raunchy concert to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. The concert raised an impressive $140,355 for the charity, and featured a eclectic mix of rock 'n' roll, church music, and debauchery. Well, what else would you expect from Debra Monk?
As comfortable flirting with younger men as she is grinding up against scantily clad fellow comedienne Andrea Martin and Company co-star Charlotte d'Amboise, Debra is a riot from start to finish.
The entire show is available on DVD from BC/EFA, and I need it.
#4: "Ohio Afternoon," Oil City Symphony (1987)
youtube
Performed as part of the "If It Only Runs a Minute" series that highlights really obscure shows that barely had a life, Debra reprised her drum-playing role in 2012. As if she didn't have enough talents. Only she could take drums and make it peak comedy.
#5: Game Night at Seth Rudetsky's Place
youtube
No explanation needed. Hello, Andrea Martin. Love you.

Favorite Episodes of "A NERO WOLFE MYSTERY" (2000-2002)
Tumblr media
Below is a list of my favorite episodes from the A&E series, "A NERO WOLFE MYSTERY". Based upon the detective stories and novels written by Rex Stout, the series starred Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin as Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe:
FAVORITE EPISODES OF "A NERO WOLFE MYSTERY" (2000-2002)
Tumblr media
1. (1.02) "Champagne For One" - In this adaptation of Stout's 1958 novel, detective Nero Wolfe investigates the death of a young unwed mother at a charity dance attended by his assistant, Archie Goodwin. The latter had been standing in for an acquaintance, who was related to the wealthy hostess.
Tumblr media
2. (2.08) "Before I Die" - A notorious gangster hires Wolfe to protect his real daughter, who is unaware of her father's identity, and stop the woman impersonating her from blackmailing him in this adaptation of Stout's 1947 novella.
Tumblr media
3. (2.05) "The Mother Hunt" - In this adaptation of Stout's 1963 novel, a wealthy young widow hires Wolfe and Archie to identify and locate the birth mother of the baby left in the vestibule of her townhouse.
Tumblr media
4. (1.08) "Over My Dead Body" - A Montenegro woman claiming to know Wolfe's adopted daughter is suspected of theft and murder at a prestigious fencing club in this adaptation of Stout's 1940 novel.
Tumblr media
5. (2.09) "Help Wanted, Male" - In this adaptation of Stout's 1945 novella, Wolfe receives a death threat regarding a past case and hires a look-a-like double to temporarily impersonate him until he can identify the perpetrator.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentioned: (2.06) "Poison à la Carte" - When Wolfe and Archie attend the annual Ten for Aristology, a gourmet society, one of the members is poisoned. Wolfe suspects one of the female servers of the crime.

BROADWAY DIVAS SUPERLATIVES: Based on a True Story

Not to discount Audra McDonald as Lady Day herself, but let's be honest, she'd sweep this with that role.

Good Luck Charlie, It's Christmas! (2011)
Tumblr media
I'm not super familiar with the show Good Luck Charlie. I knew it existed, but it was on when I was in high school, which is not a time that I was watching Disney Channel anymore. So I'm sure this would mean more to me if I had been a fan of the show, but I can review it as a standalone Christmas movie.
Our main character is teenager Teddy Duncan (Bridgit Mendler). She is the second of the four Duncan children. The whole family is traveling to Palm Springs for Christmas and mom Amy (Leigh-Allyn Baker) is a little stressed. Oldest sibling PJ (Jason Dolley) is excited for the trip like Teddy. Third sibling Gabe (Bradley Steven Perry) is reluctant to leave his gaming system. Lastly, fourth sibling is toddler Charlie (Mia Talerico), who is just running around doing toddler stuff. Also not thrilled about the trip is their dad Bob (Eric Allan Kramer) because Amy's mom Petunia (Debra Monk) is not his biggest fan.
Teddy is scheming to convince her parents to let her go by herself on a trip for spring break with her best friend. Amy tells her that if she can get the plane ticket herself, she can go. Fast forward to the airport- the airline asks for volunteers to get travel vouchers because they overbooked the flight (which does happen all the time and I don't understand why, like they have to lose more money on vouchers than they would with a few empty seats) and Teddy volunteers to give up her ticket. Amy rushes off the plane with her so that she's not alone, leaving Bob with the other three children.
Thus begins a ridiculous adventure for Teddy and Amy to travel from Denver to Palm Springs as quickly as they can by whatever mode available to them. Through mishaps and breakdowns, they meet a string of people wearing the wrong name patch on their jumpsuit, which is I think my favorite running joke through this movie. Meanwhile, Petunia and grandpa Hank (Michael Kagan) keep locking the Duncans in time out for various reasons.
The music was very Disney channel, which makes sense as that's the channel this aired on. The acting and production was pretty good, although there are lots of Disney Channel specific tropes that pop up, like the dumb older brother, and the parents who act crazy and immature until the teenager actually acts like a teenager and then they act like a parent. I'm sure there are more, but it's been a while since I've watched a Disney Channel original series.
Overall, it wasn't terrible. There were some cringe moments for sure, but I didn't hate it. I'll give it 2.5 stars.

STANDING UP, FALLING DOWN (2020) Grade: C
Kinda goes exactly how you will expect. The ending wasn't my cup of tea. Decent chemistry between the leads leads to a few good sequences to get you through to the end.

Just because: airs on a concept
Let’s just say these have ... interesting lyrical variations on what seem like similar concepts. Up to a point, anyway.
