Compared to yesterday this feels like I got the day off! Only took an hour and 40 minutes haha
I will just say real quick, where I've been going around deep cleaning everywhere, things have moved/been dumped, but I didn't bother tidying it since I knew I'd be cleaning that area in a day or two anyway, so some of this mess came from cleaning other areas
Anyway, yeah, so I moved everything out of the hallway, put some stuff away, then I hoovered the hallway, brushed it with those special brushes, hoovered it again, organised my bath stuff shelf, then put some things into my shed. A super simple day, which is great after yesterday, then before the dreaded living room tomorrow. One thing I am looking forward to though, as you can see, my floors were rather bad, so anywhere I've cleaned dust/cat litter/dirt gets dragged from dirty rooms into clean ones. So once this is all done and giving everywhere a quick final once over, that'll feel great!

So ya'know how I said my bedroom would be okay and not that bad? To the point this was one of the buffers for what I thought would be the two worst rooms, the kitchen and the living room. You know how I took 3 hours and 40 minutes cleaning the kitchen? 4 hours and 30 minutes. No joke. This took me 4 hours and 30 minutes.
I know it is clearly obvious I didn't make/tidy up my bedding, but I think given the rest, that's justified. So what I did was organise a ton of mess, throw out a ton of mess, sort out the stuff under my bed, went through my bedside cabinet and organised and threw a ton out of stuff in that, it broke so I then had to fix it. Hoovered the floor all over, went through my bed stuff and threw out old/smelly bedding, and reorganised my bedding, then I went through my wardrobe and threw out stuff that either no longer fit, smelled, was incredibly old, or I had no use for any more. I did think about finding stuff a second home. But eh. I then took down 6 black sacks full of clutter, rubbish, and old bedding/clothes
I wish I took before and after photos of my wardrobe and bedside cabinet, as the difference is wild. My back is killing me, I'm exhausted, I've barely ate or drank anything today, my sleep wasn't great, I'm just tired. Now it's just the hallway and living room left, I'm truly dreading the living room so much, that one's gonna be a lot. I also don't want to miss more gym days, but I really feel I need a break after this haha

It’s easy to clean what you can see. Fingerprints on glass, muddy footprints, a sticky kitchen counter—those are the obvious bits. But real cleaning goes further. Some of the worst grime builds quietly, just out of sight. Tucked behind furniture, inside fixtures, or layered into textures that don’t look dirty until you take a closer look. How to Be a Good Cleaner offers practical tutorials that teach aspiring cleaners to notice these hidden areas, develop professional techniques, and deliver results that truly stand out.

The May Deep-Clean Decision: Is It Time to Wash Your Mattress?

Mattresses don’t look dirty. That’s the problem. Because most of the dust, sweat, and bacteria they collect never makes it to the surface, it’s easy to forget just how much builds up over time.
Spring is when we clean everything else—windows, carpets, wardrobes. But somehow, the place where we spend nearly a third of our lives is left out. May offers the perfect window to change that.
The weather is warmer but not humid, meaning your mattress dries faster and feels fresher for longer. Cleaning it now clears away the winter build-up and sets you up for better sleep through the warmer months. It’s an easy win for comfort, hygiene, and health.
Why Mattresses Deserve a Seasonal Reset
Your mattress works hard. It absorbs body heat, sweat, oils, and dead skin cells every night—whether or not you notice. Over time, that creates the perfect environment for dust mites and bacteria to thrive.
Even if you wash your bedding weekly, the mattress underneath still collects residue. These particles work their way through the sheets and settle deep into the surface layers. Without cleaning, they stay there for months.
In spring, windows open and airflow improves, which helps with airing out fabric. That makes May the ideal time to deep-clean a mattress properly, without the risk of it staying damp or developing mildew.
What Lurks Below the Surface
Dust mites are the biggest hidden issue. They feed on dead skin and thrive in warm, soft spaces—exactly what a mattress provides. Their droppings contain allergens that can cause coughing, sneezing, and skin irritation.
These tiny mites don’t bite, but their presence still affects sleep. For people with asthma or allergies, they can trigger symptoms night after night. And once they’ve settled in, hoovering the surface won’t get rid of them.
Mattresses also trap odours. Sweat, moisture, and the occasional spill create smells that linger, even if you can’t place them. As the weather warms up, these smells can become more noticeable, especially in rooms that get a lot of sun.
Why May Is the Right Time
Dry weather and longer daylight hours mean you can clean, air, and reset your mattress without rushing. Unlike winter, you won’t need heaters to dry it out. Unlike summer, you won’t be sweating into it minutes later.
Open windows allow airflow to carry moisture out, not bring it in. That’s crucial for mattresses, which don’t dry quickly if they’ve been spot-cleaned or treated for stains. Left damp for too long, even a clean mattress can develop a musty smell.
May also falls just before the stickier part of the year. If you prep your sleep space now, you’ll head into the warmer months feeling better rested. It’s a small reset that pays off in comfort every single night.
What a Proper Mattress Clean Involves
Start by stripping the bed and airing the mattress. If possible, stand it upright near a window or in a room with good airflow. Even an hour makes a difference.
Next, hoover the surface with an upholstery attachment. Go over it slowly and in two directions, paying close attention to seams and edges where dust settles. If you see any crumbs or fine particles, use a soft brush attachment to loosen them.
To neutralise odours, lightly sprinkle bicarbonate of soda across the surface. Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour, then vacuum thoroughly again. This method is safe, simple, and highly effective for light smells and freshness.
When to Call in the Professionals
Some messes are too deep or set-in for home remedies. Sweat marks, pet accidents, or long-term odours often require professional extraction. The same applies to homes with allergy sufferers who need dust mite removal that goes beyond surface cleaning.
Professional mattress cleaning uses hot water extraction or low-moisture steam, depending on the fabric type. These methods lift out allergens, neutralise bacteria, and remove what home equipment can’t reach. The process is quick, quiet, and often dry within a few hours.
If your mattress hasn’t been cleaned in over a year—or ever—it’s well overdue. Just because it looks fine doesn’t mean it is. A professional clean removes what you can’t see and makes sleep feel noticeably better within hours.
How Often Should Mattresses Be Cleaned?
Twice a year is a good standard for most households—once in spring and once in autumn. This keeps dust mites, bacteria, and build-up under control without overdoing it. If someone in your home has allergies, consider a third clean in late summer.
Children’s mattresses may need more frequent attention, especially after spills or illness. The same goes for guest beds that haven’t been used in a while. Cleaning before and after heavy use helps extend the life of the mattress.
Regular hoovering and light deodorising between deep cleans can help maintain results. Just don’t rely on surface routines alone—they’re not enough to reach what’s settled in.
Keeping Your Mattress Fresher, Longer
Once your mattress is clean, protect it with a good-quality cover. Choose one that’s breathable, washable, and hypoallergenic. It’ll act as a barrier for moisture, dust, and allergens between deep cleans.
Rotate your mattress regularly to avoid uneven wear. For double-sided mattresses, flip them twice a year as well. This simple habit supports even support and keeps the fabric in better condition.
Wash bedding weekly, and avoid eating or drinking in bed if possible. These small habits reduce the build-up of bacteria and reduce the risk of spills becoming long-term issues.
FAQs
How do I know if my mattress needs cleaning?
If it’s been more than six months, or you notice smells, marks, or allergy symptoms, it’s time. Even if it looks clean, hidden build-up may still affect your sleep.
Is it safe to clean a mattress with water?
Only in small amounts. Spot cleaning is fine, but avoid soaking the surface. For deep cleaning, professional equipment removes moisture safely.
Can a mattress clean really improve sleep quality?
Yes. A cleaner mattress reduces allergens, improves airflow, and removes subtle smells that disrupt rest. Many people report sleeping better immediately after.

Working on cleaning out my room. Today I worked on under the bed.
So many dust bunnies and cat hair.
Found things from over five years ago under there.
Glad I got a vacuum under there to help clean.
Riley was not a fan, though.
I think cause he likes to sleep under there, and I moved things around.
