📨 An open letter to the U.S. Congress
⚖️ Fix the Insurrection Act so that no President can abuse it
✍️ 1,130 so far! Help us get to 2,000 signers!
I’m deeply concerned about the potential abuse of the Insurrection Act, especially if Donald Trump regains the Presidency. He has indicated he plans to do just that, and it’s crucial that Congress act now to fix the law.
Utah Senator Mike Lee introduced an amendment in 2021 that would have limited a president’s ability to declare insurrection. It would restrict proclamations to 30 days unless Congress approved an extension, with a maximum of one year. This is a great step!
Additionally, the law needs to be reformed to clarify what constitutes an insurrection and tighten the definition of a militia. Right now, the law is vague and open to manipulation.
Please take immediate action to ensure that no President can abuse this outdated law for their own purposes.
