Week 7

This week I adjusted the framing in the Pop up door background, as the top was being cut off in the storyboard, and even though I fixed It I probably left the top of the door too close to the edge of the screen. Aodhan and I discussed which background we would each work on next, and we split up four each, and Aodhan also provided a film guard that we can use to make sure the most important elements of our backgrounds are kept towards the centre and aren’t going to get cut off. 

So from now on my backgrounds will be drawn on the dimensions 2120 x 1280, which leaves room for bleed, as long as I make sure the most important elements are centred and in the safe zone for tv. The main actions being within 1728 x 972, an even tighter area, as this is the most important element. It will be up to the animators to animate their scenes with this is mind also, which is why I export a version of the background with the storyboarded action over the top to illustrate where the action should take place. 

This is invaluable experience that I would not have picked up without working on this group project and collaborating with other members, it makes complete sense, but it is not something I have encountered before. I also now have a better understanding of how my backgrounds and how their drawn, effects other roles, as they need to be able to fit their action within an area of the screen without being cut off in the final edit. So this film guard has an important role to play further down the line in the pipeline. 

I then worked on the ‘Darkstar Pulling Lyra’ background which features the ‘Gothic birdcage’ which I designed. I am happy with how this turned out, but will discuss it with the rest of my team on Monday as we always do to see if it gets approval from the director. I am consistently looking at both Aodhan’s work and the work of Denise Magdale, who Aodhan researched, who worked on Craig of The Creek as a background artist and whose work I have posted above, below my own, to make sure I am sticking to the style as well as Cory Fallon, the lead background designer for Craig of The Creek  who I researched from the video I posted earlier..

This is my first time working in a cartoon network style for backgrounds so this entire experience has been very beneficial and educational for me, learning industry standard techniques such as the use of film guards, and adding another art style to my portfolio which will hopefully show adaptability. 

I will now move onto the other 3 backgrounds that I am currently assigned to.
