Philippa of England, Queen of Norway, Denmark and Sweden
Philippa of England was the youngest daughter and last child of Henry of Lancaster and Mary de Bohun, Earl and Countess of Derby, and was born on, or shortly before, 1 July 1394, when her mother died from complications in childbirth. Little is known of Philippa’s early childhood but when her father usurped the throne in 1399, becoming Henry IV, her future changed dramatically. No longer the youngest daughter of an earl, she was now a princess.
The new king almost immediately began searching for marriage alliances for his two daughters. 1401 saw Henry enter into marriage negotiations with Margrete of Denmark for Philippa to marry Margrete’s adoptive son and heir, Erik of Pomerania. Like Henry, Margrete was hoping for an alliance to strengthen her domestic position and that of the fledgling Kalmar Union of Norway, Denmark and Sweden. It wasn’t until 1405 that the marriage was formally agreed upon and in December, Philippa was proclaimed Queen of Norway, Denmark and Sweden. In August 1406, the 12-year-old Philippa sailed from England in August 1406. She married Erik at the cathedral of Lund, and her coronation soon followed. Famously, Philippa is the first documented European princess to wear white at her wedding.
She spent the next three years at Kalmar Castle in Sweden, the first year under the guidance of Katarina Knutsdotter (the granddaughter of Saint Birgitta of Sweden), and probably owing in no small part to her youth, Philippa remained in the sidelines of rule until Margrete’s death in 1412. She retained close ties to Sweden, serving as Erik’s de facto regent there, and was the only queen of the Kalmar Union to ever achieve popularity in Sweden. Of particular note is her patronage of Vadstenna Abbey, the motherhouse of the Bridgettine Order. She often stayed there when in Sweden, was a generous patron, and petitioned the pope multiple times on the Order's behalf, even enlisting the support of her brother, Henry V of England. In 1425, Philippa donated a choir dedicated to St. Anne, where she was later buried. This may have had particular significance for Philippa, as she had no surviving children..
Philippa was deeply involved in the rule of all three kingdoms of the Kalmar Union. In 1420, demonstrating Erik’s trust in her, it was decided that she would serve as regent to his heir, Bogislaw of Pomerania, should the marriage remain childless, and her widow’s pension would effectively give her a ‘queendom’ in Sweden. In 1423, Erik went on pilgrimage and Philippa served as his regent, with all power that entailed, until his return in 1425. She also obtained the resources and support Erik needed for his war against the Hanseatic League. Indeed, it was Philippa who organised the defence of Copenhagen against the bombardment of the Hanseatic League in 1428 to great acclaim.
In late 1429, Philippa, apparently in good health, travelled to Sweden to secure further support for the war against the Hanseatic League. She was staying in Vadstena Abbey when she fell seriously ill and died on the night of 5 and 6 January 1430, possibly following a stillbirth. Philippa was remembered almost universally favourably, a reputation that was surely deserved.

"In the 1520s, England too was a country bursting with relics. Catherine had kissed them at Canterbury, Walsingham, Westminster and St Paul’s, and followed Elizabeth of York’s example of going into labour clutching the birthing girdle of the Virgin Mary. And these relics were accessible to the people in small parish churches, not just in the large cathedrals and monasteries. In Shelford visitors might see phials of Mary’s milk and part of her churching candle, in Kaldham the finger bone of St Stephen was on display, in Burton-on-Trent pilgrims might see the staff of St Modwena, and part of the shirt of St Thomas could be found at Derby. Clothing, girdles, combs, hair, bones and bodily fluids could be found housed all around the country as an essential component of pre-Reformation Catholicism, accessible, powerful and defining. Catherine was an important religious leader in England, teaching by example. Among the artefacts that accompanied her on her travels were pictures of Mary and her mother, St Anne, and St Elizabeth, who must have had particular resonance for Catherine, as she had miraculously conceived and given birth to a child even after the onset of her menopause."

Blanche of England, Electress Palatine
Blanche of England was the eldest daughter of Henry IV of England and Mary de Bohun, Countess of Derby. She was born at Walmsford, near Peterborough, on 25 February 1392, and was named after her paternal grandmother, Blanche of Lancaster, the subject of Chaucer's The Book of the Duchess. Blanche grew up in relative obscurity until her father usurped the throne. As if overnight, she gained a new importance. In 1401, she presided over a grand tournament and in 1408, she was made a Lady of the Garter.
Thought soon turned to her marriage and in March 1401, it was agreed that she would marry Louis (Ludwig), the son of King Rupert (Ruprecht) of Germany with a dowry of 40,000 nobles and a rich trousseau, including the Palatine Crown that once belonged to Anne of Bohemia, Richard II's first queen. Blanche and Louis married at Cologne Cathedral on 6 July 1402; she was 10 and he 24. She gave birth to their first child, Rupert the English 4 years later, when she was only 14. Despite this, the marriage is often characterised as happy.
Blanche was around six months pregnant with her second child when she contracted a fever. At first she seemed to recover but then relapsed, suffering from exhaustion, continuous fever, nosebleeds and fainting fits. She died 22 May 1409 and was buried in the Church of St. Mary (today St. Aegidius) in Neustadt an der Weinstraße.

On December 31st 1720 Prince Charles Edward Stuart was born in Rome.
The grandson of the deposed king of Scotland and England, James VII and II , handsome - 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' - and brave, he attempted to regain the throne for his father. In 1745, with his Jacobite army, he marched as far south as Derby but then was forced to retreat. The rising was totally defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and Charles remained in exile the rest of his life.
And the dramatic circumstances leading to the Prince's birth wouldn't be out of place in an adventure movie.
Worried that he was reaching 30 without a bride or an heir, Bonnie Prince Charlie's father, Prince James Francis Edward Stewart (“the Old Pretender”), tasked a loyal Irish adventurer named Charles Wogan to find him a suitor.
Wogan travelled far and wide around the courts of Europe searching for an appropriate bride and eventually he suggested Polish Princess Maria Clementina Sobieska. In October 1718, she set off to Bologna for the wedding.
These plans were soon scuppered. As the Princess and her mother travelled through Austria, they were ambushed and arrested by troops belonging to the Holy Roman Emperor. The pair were detained in Innsbruck Castle.
The arrest had been made at the request of King George I of Great Britain, who was keen to prevent a Stuart marriage.
Clementina was eventually freed by a group of rescuers – led by none other than Charles Wogan. She reportedly made her escape from the castle disguised as a maid.
After a treacherous winter journey over the Brenner Pass, Clementina finally reached Bologna in April 1719 – but no bridegroom was waiting for her. James had travelled to Spain to lead a Jacobite rising, leaving instructions for a proxy ceremony.
The pair finally met on 2nd September at Montefiascone, Italy. Their official wedding took place on the same day in Cathedral of Santa Margherita. They settled in Rome where Clementina gave birth to a son, Bonnie Prince Charlie, on New Year's Eve 1720.

Derby
Derby Cathedral tower is 212 feet (68.6 meters) tall, making it the second highest perpendicular church tower in England. Since 2006 a pair of breeding peregrine falcons have made the tower their home, and can be observed via a webcam.

Following yonder star Luke Jerram's Gaia exhibition wherever it goes; having been to Stoke, Keele, Birmingham and Derby, I then went to Lichfield Cathedral, which has long been one of my favourites and which I've grown to love even more since staying here at the end of the Two Saints Way in April 2016.
Braving Storm Babet, I came back here (where Gaia will sit until 5 November 2023; you haven't got long!) for the Cathedral, the smaller but not to be missed Saint Chad, the Samuel Johnson museum and the Erasmus Darwin museum (please see here and here for my earlier visits) for the latest but not last link in the chain.

2 June 2012 | Queen Elizabeth II talks in the parade ring before the Diamond Jubilee Coronation Cup race on Derby Day in Epsom, England. For only the second time in its history, the UK celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of a monarch. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates the 60th anniversary of her ascension to the throne. The Queen along with all the members of the royal family will participate in a River Pageant with a flotilla of 1,000 boats accompanying them down the Thames, a star studded free concert at Buckingham Palace, and a carriage procession and a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral. Dear friends
Hello! Welcome to the world of "North Western Chronicles." A Thomas The Tank Engine AU, set in a similar, but ultimately, different timeline from our own. NWC is a part of the wider 63A Universe, which is also of my own making. Most things here really came about from crack ideas & thoughts. But also ideas that have been in my mind now for a few years. Anyway, I hope you find both NWC & 63A to be of interest. And if not, you can dump me in the sea.

ohio worms time >:) this is a rundown of the first irm for all (checks hand) thirteen players i’m writing irms for. ves sundae already has two concepts, so both of those will be outlined here. the rest is between me and god (not conceptualized yet)
lenny crumb - ohio state reformatory. normal guy who leads the ghost/paranormal tours at the reformatory & summoned a ghost in the cathedral off hours to play blaseball for nyr. said ghost doesn’t remember jack or shit about nyrself besides being rude and how to play blaseball so ne steals lenny’s pronouns and the first half of nyr name
vessalius sundae v1 - cleveland play house. middle-aged performer who unofficially retired from the stage to become the artistic director for the play house. lived in sarasota fl for some time in the early parts of her career, but moved back to ohio when she was about 30 to be closer to home. joining blaseball was an accident but she’s having fun in the spotlight again
vessalius sundae v2 - dietsch brothers. works at the ice cream counter and the chocolate counter interchangeably. cognitohazard who looks like other blaseball cognitohazards’ original form. has gotten the employee of the month title exactly once
patchwork southwick - lake erie frozen lighthouse. there’s a couple of these but i’d like to imagine in the blaseball universe at least one is just... perpetually frozen, because for the fucking life of me none of the websites i looked at told me if the one i liked WAS always frozen. it is now. lighthouse keeper who either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care that their lighthouse is Like This. has a cat. the cat is a ghost. this also goes unaddressed.
xandra pancakes - world’s largest horseshoe crab. realass roadside attraction btw i want to go see it. xandra emerged from the shadows the same election that luis came to the worms, so there’s a “we stole this fake crab from baltimore” kind of vibe going on. crab heist. xandra “carcinized” from the experience and now hosts drag shows at the giant horseshoe crab statue
scratch deleuze - elmore tombstone derby. dlerby, if you will. avid participant in the motorized casket race, and has recently incorporated design elements referencing the dead ohio worms as some kind of memorial. she’s also responsible for dragging the entirety of the worms to turn the stadium into a haunted house attraction every october
cantus hojo - toledo botanical gardens. artist who works with glass & creates sculptures to be seasonally displayed across the gardens. occasionally helps out with the gardens, but has largely lost time for that since joining blaseball; very loudly misses it. some of her creations can be found across the worms’ stadium.
muse scantron - neonworks of cincinnati / american sign museum. makes custom neon signs & helps to repair older ones; since coming back to blaseball from the black hole, they’ve had a pretty long backlog they’re still working through. however, they’ve still managed to find the time to decorate the stadium and their teammates’ livelihoods or homes with custom neon signs on request. they’re reportedly “pretty happy” they got sent to the shadows, as it gives them more time to work on the job they actually enjoy doing
susananana portmanteau - moonville tunnel. train conductor ghost with an accompanying ghost train that picks up “residents” from all parts of ohio who want to try moving on. rumoured to originally be an amalgam of railway workers who died around moonville tunnel, but xe’s never said as much, so it’s anyone’s guess. keeps directing the train to go into lake erie, and frequently tries to aim it directly into the ocean closest to any given away game. xe’s fine. the consistent attack on lake erie means xe has a rivalry with patchwork southwick.
millipede aqualuft - ohio uni in athens. humans vs zombies admin who was participating in a game on the go and was in the wrong place at the very, very wrong time. just some college student. trying to recruit their teammates & other blaseball teams into trying out a leaguewide game on the field (it’d be fun i promise i prommy cmon)
kit ratoon - bill’s donuts. joined the worms’ shadows for a steady supplement to his income so he could pay off student debt, and never really expected to be dragged into active play in the middle of the worst season ever while making a donut delivery to the worms. they do make very good donuts, though.
scoobert toast - columbus park of roses. goes by toast. was visiting the stadium to discuss planting a garden outside the museum with the director there when pudge nakamoto died and they got the call to play. has spent the better part of their life tending to roses, but picked up the basics of blaseball just in time to receive the credit to the team modification. they’ve mostly spent their time since joining trying to grow roses around the stadium and thinking steadfastly about anything except the end of the world, because that’s entirely too out of their paygrade as a gardener. occasionally cut roses they touch turn to gold.
katy cornbread - jungle jim’s international market. employee at a decidedly more omegamart-esque blaseball version of jungle jim’s who joined the ohio worms shadows in season 19 in hopes that she could get the hell out of retail at the weird multiuniverse store with plastic sharks all over the place. got her wish in season 22 but got the subtractor mod in the s22 elections, and worried through the end of the world about being kicked off the team for unrun crimes and having to go back to jungle jim’s
ephraim ladd - i-80 rest stops. heyy look a guy who already has irm i only have to write one for him. formerly a statue that appeared at every rest stop on i-80 in ohio, identical each time besides extremely passable subtle differences, ladd now plays blaseball and all of his movements are telegraphed to the rest stop statues. unsurprisingly this has not made all of the rest stops being identical any less creepy
