1980 - American model and musician Bebe Buell with her band The B-Sides.

In 1980 Bebe Buell founded her first band, The B-Sides. Together their made several independent recordings; the first was called “Covers Girl” and was released by Rhino Records in 1981, produced by Rick Derringer and Ric Ocasek. It was a four song EP of obscure cover songs featuring legendary group The Cars backing her on two of the tracks, and rock guitar legend Rick Derringer. Bebe’s pure love of music and natural sense of cool come through on these recordings. The album cover art was a photo of Bebe ripping up a magazine that featured her on its cover.

The B-Sides released a pure pop 12 inch picture disc “A Side of the B-Sides” (1983) produced by Bebe’s former beau Todd Rundgren. The band toured extensively in the US and disbanded in 1985.

Dickey Betts founding member of The Allman Brothers Band grew up in a musical family listening to traditional bluegrass, country music and Western swing. He started playing ukulele at five and, as his hands got bigger, moved on to mandolin, banjo, and guitar. At sixteen and feeling the need for something "a little faster", he played in a series of rock bands on the Florida circuit, up the East Coast and into the Midwest before forming Second Coming with Berry Oakley in 1967. According to Rick Derringer, the "group called the Jokers" referenced in "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" was one of Betts' early groups.

Born Forrest Richard Betts on December 12, 1943 in West Palm Beach, Florida and died April 18, 2024 in Osprey, Florida at the age of 80.

Tri-Tober Fanfic shorts Prompt 17: Leather Setting: Any / All canons Summary: A bounty hunter shoots Vash's toma out from under him. It cannot be saved, but it can be used.

Prompt 17: Leather Wasteland Ways Vash pitched forward, tail-over-head, as his toma groaned and fell out from under him.  The bastards that were after them had gotten a hit.  What a time to be out of ammo and called on his bluff!  What a time for neither he nor Wolfwood to want the girls involved! What a time for Vash to get SHOT, AGAIN!  Meryl reined her steed back the way they’d come, guiding by leg, both derringers out.  Milly called after her, telling her to come back.  Wolfwood grunted.  He’d been out ahead and he’d promised Needle Noggin that he wouldn’t unleash Hell upon such a small band of pitiful losers who weren’t even worth the trouble, but the moment he’d seen his friend fall and lie still in the sand, all bets were off.  They were easily scared away once they’d actually seen the amount of firepower they were up against, but their boss’ hunting rifle had taken a casualty.  “Vash!”  Meryl cried in relief as she watched the red-clad gunman pick himself out of the sand.  He brushed himself off.  He was fine, free of any fresh holes.  His toma, however, was thrashing.  Wolfwood rode around them as a guard while Milly dismounted her own bird and skidded to her knees in the dirt to help Vash divest the wounded animal of its tack.  Vash held the creature’s head in his lap as he helplessly pawed over the sucking chest wound the poor thing had.  He made sssshing noises and told the bird what a good toma she'd been while shaking and silently weeping.  This wasn’t treatable.  The animal made a high-pitched wheezing sound as it kicked one last time and relaxed into Vash’s lap.  The group watched in silence for a long time as Vash stroked the toma’s feathers.  Milly went to a saddlebag on her own toma as Meryl held it and withdrew a long hunting knife.  “Hey, big girl, what are ya doin’?” Wolfwood spat out.  “What we do on the farm when we lose an animal,” Milly said simply.  Her voice was unusually subdued.  She knelt beside Vash and put a hand to his shoulder.  “I’m sorry, Mr. Vash,” she said.  “But we can’t just leave her here.  The worms will come and… we’re running low on food…and…and…” she choked out, “And your boots need repairing, and Mr. Priest’s shoes and all our belts.  Mr. Vash… my family taught me to never let anything go to waste.  Don’t worry, I’ll deal with it.  You can go sit by Meryl and look away.”  Vash looked at her thunderstuck for a moment before saying; “No… I’ll help.  She was my bird, I should help take care of it.”    Vash tapped the heel of one of his boots sharply upon the ground and two halves of a knife formed in the toe.  He tapped it again and ejected the knife. Meryl and Wolfwood did not know what to make of it – the two most gentle, peace-loving and blood-averse members of their little group doing a quick field-dressing of a toma.  That night around the campfire, what meat could be salvaged was smoked into a rock-hard jerky while their big farm-raised girl and their ancient-eyed, weary wasteland wanderer who wore an air of having had to do things like this in the past scraped out a toma-hide to be made into leather for repair-purposes or trade.    It was meticulous, grisly work to clean off a toma-skin and both of them were crying the whole time.

"That blond twit" is probably one of the nicer things people have called Vash, TBF. I don't think that title would bother him much.

Heheheheheh, Vash just... randomly having high-tech lost technology tiny radio gadgets on him. Because of course he does.

This is true. Also, he probably doesn't want to. He should probably just explain by smiling and saying, "I'm Vash the Stampede!" That would probably be enough.

Aw, man. Things are already not going their way.

I love, love how strongly Vash reacts to realizing he accidentally injured someone badly. It hurts to see, but it tells us so much about his character.

Vash is telling Katie to remember Rem's name, but without context, it's just gonna be confusing for the kid.

I appreciate the little detail that, now that the injured peon is being treated for his wound, we see his face. Now he's no longer a faceless peon. Now he's a person.

I've seen other people say it, but I'm gonna say it, too. Vash is absolutely not underestimating people.

I love how Vash's face is covered in this panel. I love how it obscures our perception of how he's reacting to this. I love how hard this hits when you know his history.

Yeah, Shinypants McGee gets it. He recognizes skill when he sees it.

Poor Vash has been running around too much with all this. He needs a nap and some juice. And... uh... medical treatment.

That... is the exact opposite of "the only clear room."

And yet, Vash's first concern is making sure Katie is safe.

Today’s compilation:

Frankenstein and Other Rock Monsters 1984 Hard Rock / Heavy Metal / Blues-Rock

Don't be fooled by the title or the packaging, folks; this may look like some cheap, little Halloween or horror-themed comp, but it's very much not. The brain trust at CBS Records just decided to make Edgar Winter's classic 1973 prog rock instrumental, "Frankenstein," this album's title track, and then proceeded to extrapolate on a purely aesthetic theme from there.

What this really is, is just a short sampler of hard rock and heavy metal tunes from the 70s and 80s that were in CBS' catalogue at the time in 1984, when this LP was originally released. And I gotta say, with such a broad theme, that I kinda dig the whole randomness of this album's selections; it's not like it's making some silly, grandiose claim of "best rock songs" that it's sure to fall short of in just 40-plus minutes of runtime. Instead, Frankenstein and Other Rock Monsters is just fully cognizant of what it is, with really no set expectations to meet; and that's kind of refreshing.

So, what we have is an assorted mix of different classic rock things: there's some *very* overplayed classics, like the aforementioned title track, Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," and The Romantics' "What I Like About You;" some pretty blasé heavy metal tunes; and a couple throwaway live recordings from Ozzy Osbourne and David Johansen, although the guitar solo on Ozzy's "Paranoid" is pretty gnarly.

But there's two other songs on here that end up making this whole listening experience worth it in the end. And both of them never charted, but they happen to sit back-to-back on this album's b-side: Tommy Bolin's "Teaser" and Johnny Winter's "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo."

Tommy Bolin's 1975 solo debut album was actually critically acclaimed when it came out, but it didn't really succeed commercially, and that's because Bolin had caught himself in a bit of his own little pickle. See, Ritchie Blackmore had just quit Deep Purple and the remaining members were trying to figure out if they should just fully dissolve the band or try to find a replacement. But Bolin then ended up jamming with them for a few hours and they instantly decided to keep on chugging along with him as their lead guitarist. As a result, Bolin now had tour commitments to the band and couldn't support his own solo effort, which was released around the same time as Deep Purple's newest album. It was a real shame too, because the Beach Boys had even coached him on how to sing and he had brought in some real talent to back him on the studio recordings as well, including synth wizard Jan Hammer, famed saxophonist David Sanborn, and even Phil Collins. None of them appeared on the album's title track, though, which is still a terrific piece of mid-70s hard rock 🤘 .

And regarding "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo," there's a definite chance that you've heard a different version of it before; one that was by Rick Derringer that turned out to be his only top-40 solo hit, reaching #23 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1973. But that wasn't actually the original version of the song, despite the fact that Derringer himself had written it. In 1970, he was a member of a band called Johnny Winter And, and naturally, they ended up being the first ones to record it. So, it's not the most famous version of the song, but it's still a great piece of somewhat overlooked Johnny Winter-branded blues-rock 😎.

All in all, this album was feeling like a bit of a waste of time at about three-quarters of the way in, but then CBS put in that pair of relative obscurities from Bolin and Winter, and that ended up changing the overall dynamic of the whole album. Was bored by rote classics and mediocre metal, but those two songs managed to enhance the overall listen by a good margin 🙂.

Storia Di Musica #273 - Todd Rundgren, Something/Anything?, 1972

È una di quelle figure che in uno studio di registrazione sa fare di tutto: musicista, compositore, arrangiatore, produttore, a cui si aggiungono le magie di tecnico del suono, alcune pioneristiche che faranno scuola, appassionato anche di tecniche di registrazione video, il tutto sublimato in un carattere giocoso e bizzarro, che si rifletterà anche nelle sue scelte musicali e artistiche. È giovanissimo quando entra nel primo gruppo, i Nazz, quartetto rock pop che si rifaceva nel suono al beat inglese degli inizi degli anni ‘60. Nel 1969 i Nazz si separano. Rundgren è già un fiume in piena e pubblica a cavallo tra 1970 e 1971 due dischi, Runt (soprannome che gli ha dato Patti Smith) che ha il primo hit nel singolo We Gotta Get You A Woman, il secondo inaugura la fortunata collaborazione con la casa editrice Bearsville, fondata dal manager di Bob Dylan, Albert Grossman. La casa editrice aveva un meraviglioso studio di registrazione vicino Woodstock, nei pressi dove anche Dylan aveva una graziosa villa di campagna, e lì Rundgren sperimenterà tutta la sua creatività. Rundgren le prime tre facciate, ed è clamoroso, le suona, le arrangia e le produce tutto da solo: suonando tutti gli strumenti e cantando in tutti i brani. La quarta facciata, pensata come un mini musical concept, lo vede affiancato da un gruppo di grandi artisti tra cui Rick Derringer alla chitarra, Michael Brecker ai fiati, alcuni musicisti della Paul Butterfield Band. La parte personale la registra a Los Angeles, utilizzando anche tecniche rivoluzionarie all’epoca, come un sintetizzatore VSC3, uno dei primi utilizzati (e ci sono dei piccoli frammenti vocali nel disco dove Rundgren ne descrive l’utilizzo, si ascolti la bellezza strumentale di Breathless, che sembra 10 anni avanti il 1972), il resto a Woodstock. Le melodie orecchiabili che nelle note di copertina sono descritte in verità sono un’amalgama disumana di bravura e di passione, sebbene siano chiari i fari di ispirazioni per Rundgren. In scaletta pezzi che diventeranno hit come I Saw The Light, ispirata al suono dei Beatles, It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference, altra hit, in stile Motown, The Night The Carousel Burnt Down, canzone da night club, cristallina e deliziosa. Sperimenta di tutto: i ritmi latini in One More Day (No World), sonda il blues in I Went To The Mirror, è cupo e dannato nella gotica Black Maria, satura di feedback chitarristici, omaggia persino Hendrix nella bellissima Little Red Lights. Saving Grace inizia con la voce distorta dal sintetizzatore ma continua come una grande ballad alla Bacharach, con degli arrangiamenti perfetti per tutto il disco. Se proprio si vuole concentrare in un brano la varietà di questo lavoro direi che basta Slut, che chiude l’ultima facciata: blues, boogie, rock'and roll urlato sguaiatamente, cori femminili, un vortice che prende spunto dal Wall of Sound spectoriano e che sale di potenza fino alla fine. Una prova magistrale, che lo impone come uno dei maestri della musica, per la sua eclettica grandezza. Il disco vende benissimo, e Rundgren ci prende gusto e ci riprova l’anno dopo con l’ancora più ambizioso A Wizard A True Star (titolo enfatico su come si sente lui stesso nel panorama musicale), dove il suo stile fantasioso raggiunge il massimo, e avrà un singolo in classifica in International Feel e nella rilettura del brano Never Never Land dal cartone animato di Peter Pan. Il trittico si conclude nel ‘74 con un altro doppio, Todd, anche stavolta realizzato quasi tutti da solo. Nello stesso anno, nascono gli Utopia, che lo accompagneranno per il resto della sua carriera, alternando dischi a nome solista a dischi a nome Utopia. Resta il fatto che Something/Anything? rimane una delle più memorabili espressioni di capacità musicali di un singolo musicista, e forse il più grande album “enciclopedico” di power pop. È stabilmente in tutte le classifiche dei più grandi dischi della storia, come esempio anche di eccessiva autostima, che però scivola via subito ascoltando la bellezza delle sue composizioni.

The song became standard fare for garage bands and, in 1965, it became one of the first songs recorded by the Yardbirds with guitarist Jeff Beck. A version by the rock group the McCoys was the most successful, when it reached number one in the singles chart."

Theo is an only child, and his mom died from an illness when he was only five years old.

His remaining family is very small. His dad was also an only child, and his mom’s side of the family lives in Ruug.

He wrote a song about his dad’s death but refuses to play it for anyone.

RELATIONSHIPS

Theo’s first real crush was on Jude Derringer when he was 13.

Theo has a problem where he craves love, but struggles to actually maintain his relationships. His past boyfriends have complained that he’s too closed off and that he pours his feelings into music instead of actually talking. He’s usually the one who gets dumped.

Robin is his ex-boyfriend. They dated a few months before breaking up amicably. They stayed friends until Theo moved and they lost contact with each other.

He’s had two serious relationships and a lot of short flings that never really went anywhere.

His last serious relationship ended, because he cheated on Theo.

He actually falls in love hard and can be a little on the possessive side, but he’s not very good at expressing either of those things. He usually keeps it to himself or writes those feelings into a song.

Theo hasn’t dated at all since moving back to Rungung for multiple reasons–grief and focusing on opening the bar.

The People Issue 2024: Renaissance Woman Bebe Buell

The longtime rock ’n’ roller has landed her spaceship in Nashville, and she intends to stay

A musician, writer and longtime “it girl,” Bebe Buell has lived a mystical life in the world of rock ’n’ roll — a life most could only dream of, from growing up in the South to living with nuns, weaving herself into New York City’s 1970s arts scene, raising actress Liv Tyler and juggling various creative projects of her own.

Buell’s heart has always been in music. She could have pursued acting, prolonged her successful modeling career or even married one of her many rock-star lovers, but Buell had her own life to live, her own stories to tell, her own songs to sing. And she still does.

The Scene recently caught up with Buell backstage at a 3rd & Lindsley show dedicated to New York City’s ’60s and ’70s rock scene. She was there to join legendary local cover outfit The Long Players and her husband Jim Wallerstein, who formerly played with Das Damen and co-produces Buell’s music. On this recent Saturday night, Buell recounted her friendships with Patti Smith and Nico before singing “Because the Night,” “Femme Fatale” and other tunes in her rich contralto croon. While the show was dedicated to others’ music, Buell has her own discography — dating back to the ’80s and featuring a wide range of raw, energetic rock tunes both as a solo artist and with her bands The B-Sides and The Gargoyles. Throughout her music career, she’s worked with heavy hitters including Todd Rundgren, Rick Derringer and Ric Ocasek, as well as local legends like Jon Tiven and Dave Roe.

Buell spent most of her life in NYC. But after recording a track for ​​Plowboy Records’ tribute album You Don’t Know Me: Rediscovering Eddy Arnold in 2012, she was enticed by the spiritual connection she felt with Nashville. Since relocating, she says she’s formed countless friendships and performed at just about every venue in town, including frequent appearances at the recurring Thee Rock N’ Roll Residency.

“I wanted to come here to really get good at my craft,” says Buell. “Getting to live in this town and be an active participant in the musical community is a dream come true.”

Last year, Buell released her second book — Rebel Soul: Musings, Music & Magic. A follow-up to 2001’s Rebel Heart, the book is a mosaic of memories that combines past experiences and present insights. Landing somewhere between memoir and scrapbook, Rebel Soul invites readers to consider not just the glamour but also the pain of a rock ’n’ roll lifestyle. 

“I watched that life swallow up a lot of women that couldn’t hold on to their identity, and drug dependency destroyed a lot of beautiful lives,” says Buell. 

“I live it every day,” says Buell of honoring those memories without getting lost in the past. “I’m an active singer, songwriter, performer, writer. I have bestsellers. I am not just sitting there, melancholy, thinking about the cool guys I dated when I was 24.” 

Frustrated by local challenges such as the GOP-controlled state legislature’s attacks on reproductive rights, Buell was considering leaving Tennessee when Rebel Soul was released. But events like the Covenant School shooting and the subsequent expulsions of Democratic state Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson — along with the Republican supermajority’s attempted expulsion of Knoxville Democrat Gloria Johnson — have since convinced her to stay. “I’m not turning my back on this town,” she says.

“I realized that I want to be here to help with the change. I want to use my voice, not to hurt anybody, not to call people names, not to finger-point, not to point out what’s obviously wrong — we already know what’s wrong. What we need to do now is focus on what we can do to make it right.”

I guess didn't leave it unmentioned, in at least one of my previous entries (1) , that I used to be none too fond of Exciter from Kiss' first non-make-up album Lick It Up from 1983.

And even though I had to learn to tackle the song better and really appreciate its quality, it was always the corny cheesy pathos in Paul's voice and vocals that had a repulsive effect on me to no small degree and put me off wanting to delve further into this song. However, things have changed a bit I now kinda love this cheese.

On top of that, it seemed to me that its main riff was borrowing a little too desperately and equally in vain from The Oath in an attempt, from Paul's perspective, to salvage what could still be salvaged from The Elder.

But even that doesn't bother me at all anymore, since I've become a little more aware that such a procedure is basically the norm in Kiss' songwriting. And there are quite a few Kiss albums in the band's post Elder catalog that make use of Music from The Elder (1981) quite liberally and frequently.

But there was always one element about Exciter that, despite all my quibbles, had often enough magically attracted me to it, and fortunately prevented this song from sinking completely into the swamp of oblivion: The guitar solo. With its unparalleled, low-pitched and controlled grandeur, it knew how to grab me right away. Provided I managed to get to this point without instinctively activating the skip function on my CD player.

That the officially released version of this solo on the album is not by Vinnie Vincent I of course only realized quite a while later, and that at least one version of an instrumental rough mix including a genuine Vinnie Vincent solo is floating around on the net an even longer spell later.

Reason enough for me to devote a few moments to both versions and see what comes out of it.

When I heard the Vinnie version for the first time about five years ago, I had to honestly admit that I really liked his solo, even after repeated listens. I was also convinced that it would have given Kiss the missing edge and a geniune moment of breaking loose, with an intensity that they probably lacked at the time to really keep up with the heavier contemporary metal bands in terms of attitude.

I would never say a truly bad word about any Kiss guitarist, but I don't think any of them, especially Bruce, ever had the anger and pain presented in Vinnie's solo. It was unexpectedly good. Or so you might think.

But what I missed at the time, and what catches my eye all the more today, is that this is exactly where the problem lies. I still think Vinnie's solo is good, but still not as good, or rather not as fitting as Rick Derringer's on the album version. Vinnie's solo works a bit like a pornographic hardcore sequence in the middle of a well balanced melodrama, if you know what I mean. Both aren't necessarily bad, they just don't really belong together.

Mr. Golden Nose's solo is like a cleft in the canvas of a painting, and the cleft in and of itself certainly has a certain natural beauty and depth to it, and of course could be called art if one were willing to engage with it. But that doesn't change the fact that a hole in the picture is a hole in the picture - and thus clearly destroys the magnificent picture. Derringer's solo, on the other hand, creates much more depth, like a deep blue in which one could lose oneself without leaving the picture, and expands Exciter's dimension without breaking or completely sabotaging the functioning frame and its rules. It merely uses the moment of tension and transfers it into a well-lubricated moment of surprise. Principle of unity.

And that's exactly what makes the difference. Sorry Vinnians.

But if you still like it, you will certainly enjoy your breakfast cereal with a red hot chili pepper, including the seeds of course. That's fine by me, of course, because it's all just a question of attitude anyway. And also a little bit of good taste. But we all hopefully know that taste is learnable.

If you can speak of good taste here at all, but to be honest I don't really care, I'm simply trying to create allegories here.
