typeface Bau
Continuing the work on my typeface — bau, a modular grid-based alphabet inspired by the structural clarity of the Bauhaus. Each letter is constructed within a strict square system — limiting expression to geometry, yet revealing rhythm through form.
This is not a decorative font. It’s a study in structure, in constraint, in balance. Where every shape follows a logic, but keeps its own identity.
Built on the principle: less, but better.

A recent trip to Plymouth allowed some much-needed mental breathing room. 🌊 A small write-up of an exhibit has been posted on my old WordPress (website is currently private): Exploring Plymouth's Ocean City: The Box Museum Experience - https://kerryanncleaverblog.wordpress.com/2024/11/17/exploring-plymouths-ocean-city-the-box-museum-experience/
Pic 1 - Swimming hats created in 2021 for the Gorran Haven Cold Water Crew, a group of sea swimmers who support each other with motivation and companionship. 🏊 Each hat represents an important aspect of culture or folklore in the South West.
Pic 2 - A striking ship figurehead. 🚢
Pic 3 - In collaboration with the sea, the artist connected with water gatherers from around the world to bring all the seas to one location. 🌍 ‘The world addresses personal, poetic, and geopolitical aspects of human engagement with our seas.’
Pic 4 + 5 - Exhibit element exploring plastic and microplastic: Fisherman’s Kisses—discarded plastic rope. ‘Over 10,000 small sections of cut net were collected by local beach-cleaning volunteers in just a few visits to Whitsand Bay. A small number of them are displayed here.’ ♻️

Week 1: Introduction to "Anneal"
What is "Anneal"?
The word anneal is rich with meaning across various contexts, from its technical applications in material science to its metaphorical significance in resilience and transformation. Here's what I found out so far:
Dictionary Definitions
Material Science: To heat (metal or glass) and allow it to cool slowly, removing internal stresses and making the material easier to work with. Example: "Copper tubes must be annealed after bending, or they will be brittle."
Biology: The process of recombining DNA in double-stranded form
Figurative Meaning: To strengthen or toughen through hardship. Example: "She was annealed by the tragedies of her childhood."
Origins and Etymology
Old English: onǣlan (on + ǣlan), meaning "to set on fire."
Derived from āl (fire, burning), reflecting its early association with heat and transformation.
The term evolved in Middle English to include altering material by fire.
Applications Across Disciplines
Material Science:
Annealing is a heat treatment process that increases ductility and reduces hardness, making materials more workable. The process involves several thermal cycles:
Subcritical Annealing: Heating below the critical temperature.
Full Annealing: Heating above the upper critical temperature.
Common materials: Copper, silver, brass.
Annealing is used to improve machinability, and electrical properties, and reduce internal stresses.
Biology:
Annealing refers to binding complementary DNA or RNA strands. It is a process fundamental to genetic research and laboratory testing. It can involve heating and cooling cycles to separate and recombine strands, often with primers.
Metaphorical Use:
To anneal people or ideas is to reshape, strengthen, or unite them, as if through a transformative heating and cooling process.
Synonyms and Antonyms
Synonyms: Strengthen, temper, fortify, reinforce, adjust, acclimate
Antonyms: Weaken, soften, sensitize, incapacitate.
Quote of the Week
"Art is a language which anneals individuals to each other through experiences that are uniquely human, that demand connection at the level of making meaning."
- Ann Lauterbach, The Night Sky: Writing on the Poetics of Experience
Looking Ahead
This week, I've focused on understanding some of the historical, semantic, and technical roots of anneal. Moving forward, ill explore how this concept can inspire 2D, 3D, and 4D visualizations, focusing on its themes of transformation and resilience.
Stay tuned for updates on my research journey and creative process!

Creative Positioning
For creative positioning, for the 4 designers, I choose Josef Muller Brockmann, Tyrone Ohia, Kalee Jackson and ThoughtFull Design Studio.
Josef Muller Brockman
As I mentioned in “The Creative”, Josef Müller-Brockmann is one of my design heroes. He is one of the pioneers of the Swiss grid system commonly used in design today. His work is a constant source of inspiration for me, with his use of the grid system. These are some of his works I look at.

This shows one of his most infamous posters, Beethoven. The Beethoven poster was designed in 1955. It is most known for its clean typography and geometric shapes used in the poster.

The arcs in the poster are placed by doubling the diameter of each arc. This creates a clean and clinical design, which is an element of the Swiss style. (Whitehead, 2017) Researching the Beethoven poster expanded my knowledge of the Swiss grid system. Before, I only knew about vertical and horizontal grids and their uses.

Design research: AeroSpace sidestick
Imagine that you need to press the buttons of the sidestick (joystick) confidently and clearly when your vehicle / lander / spacecraft is being hit and shaken.

For example, the oscillation amplitude is 0.01-1.0m , or acceleration is 2/5/10G.
You can't let the joystick out of your hand to work with the buttons, you can't look at the buttons, you have a thick aerospace glove on your hand.
We have designed a handle of sidestick that solves such problems.
1) The buttons are divided into three levels, each of which differs in its geometric location and is easily determined by tactile feels.
2) The buttons are made mechanical - this prevents accidental clicks.
3) They are embedded in the body, and near them there is a finger support - this allows you to prepare for pressing in advance, even with vibrations.
4) The buttons are equipped with touch contact sensors - the finger contact with each button (without pressing) is displayed as an indicator on the dashboard.

Understanding Research Methodologies and Design
Understanding Research Methodologies and DesignResearch is the cornerstone of progress in any field, from science and medicine to education and social sciences. To conduct meaningful research, one must first understand the fundamentals of research methodologies and design. These two concepts form the framework for systematic investigation and ensure the reliability and validity of results. This blog explores the essentials of research methodologies and design, offering a comprehensive guide for students, researchers, and enthusiasts.---What Is Research Methodology?Research methodology is the systematic plan for conducting research. It encompasses the tools, techniques, and procedures used to gather and analyze data, ensuring that the findings are accurate and relevant to the research question.Key components of research methodology include:1. Research PhilosophyPositivism: Focuses on observable phenomena and measurable facts.Interpretivism: Seeks to understand human behavior in its social context.Pragmatism: Combines positivism and interpretivism based on the research problem.2. Approach to ResearchDeductive Approach: Starts with a theory or hypothesis and tests it through data collection.Inductive Approach: Develops a theory based on observed patterns in the data.3. Types of ResearchQualitative: Explores experiences, concepts, and narratives. Common methods include interviews and thematic analysis.Quantitative: Measures variables numerically, often using surveys, experiments, and statistical analysis.Mixed Methods: Integrates both qualitative and quantitative approaches for a comprehensive understanding.---What Is Research Design?Research design is the blueprint of a study. It outlines the structure, techniques, and strategies for conducting research, ensuring the process is both effective and efficient.Key types of research design include:1. Exploratory Research DesignUsed when little is known about a problem. Methods include literature reviews, focus groups, and open-ended surveys.2. Descriptive Research DesignAims to describe characteristics or behaviors in detail.Surveys, observational studies, and case studies are common methods.3. Explanatory (Causal) Research DesignFocuses on identifying cause-and-effect relationships.Experimental designs, including randomized control trials, are widely used.4. Longitudinal vs. Cross-Sectional DesignsLongitudinal: Studies subjects over a long period to observe changes.Cross-Sectional: Collects data at a single point in time.---Steps to Create a Solid Research Design1. Define the Research ProblemStart with a clear and concise research question. For example, "What factors influence academic performance in college students?"2. Review LiteratureAnalyze existing studies to understand gaps and inform your design.3. Choose the Research MethodologyDecide whether your study will be qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods.4. Select Data Collection MethodsUse appropriate tools like surveys, interviews, experiments, or observational techniques.5. Plan Data AnalysisDecide on statistical methods or thematic approaches depending on your data type.6. Pilot the StudyConduct a small-scale trial to refine your methods.---The Importance of Ethical ConsiderationsEthics is integral to research methodologies and design. Ensure that your study respects the rights and dignity of participants by:Gaining informed consent.Ensuring confidentiality.Avoiding plagiarism and ensuring transparency in data reporting.---ConclusionMastering research methodologies and design is vital for conducting effective and credible research. By choosing the right approach, adhering to ethical practices, and meticulously planning each step, you can contribute valuable insights to your field of study.Whether you're a novice researcher or an experienced academic, understanding these concepts lays the foundation for impactful investigations. Keep learning, experimenting, and refining your approach to stay at the forefront of your discipline.

Currently re-reading Sherry Turkle's Alone Together—and honestly, it’s been a slightly unsettling read. 📖 The book delves into our evolving relationship with technology, particularly the rise of social robots designed to replace human connection. From robot dogs and Furbies to children’s companions and elder care, this rapid technological progression raises a critical question:
Are we forgetting that nothing can truly replace the presence and compassion of another human being?
One point that really struck me: 📱 “Studies show that if two people are having lunch, a cell phone at the table steers the conversation to lighter subjects, and each party feels less invested in the other. It’s not surprising. Each person in the conversation knows that with a phone on the landscape, you can be interrupted at any time.”
This resonates deeply. I already try to keep my phone out of sight during meaningful conversations, but seeing the science behind it reinforces how essential it is to be present.
Other powerful quotes from the book: 👉 “We seem determined to give human qualities to objects and content to treat each other as things.” 👉 “Technology makes us forget what we know about life.” 👉 “Where we examine the assumption that we are getting something important from these new technologies, we must ask whether a technology expands our capacities and possibilities or exploits our vulnerabilities?” 👉 “People are lonely. The network is seductive. But if we are always on, we may deny ourselves the rewards of solitude.”
As a designer, these insights are crucial. The projects I aim to be a part of are not just about bridging the gap between humans and the natural world—but also about bringing us closer to each other.
Turkle’s research is a powerful reminder to reflect on our relationship with technology and consider how we can shift toward more compassionate, human-centered designs. 🌿

The Creative Communities:
Who are the local and global creatives, designers, illustrators, photographers, that you want to connect with?
I want to connect to studios in NZ. Studios like Studio South, Milk, ThoughtFull Design.
What are the influences on them and what engages you in their work?
The running theme of influences among all three studios is kiwi culture and the environmental, or community foundation. These influences come as no surprise to me as Aotearoa is a small place in which people are very connected to the communities and land we live on.
In what (if any) ways as they collaborative and engaging communities?
What impacts, concepts, thematics, and organising principles are at play in the creative practice?
