In memory of Kathleen Ann Austin Santos, Demri’s mother (February 16, 1950 – June 12, 2023) on the first anniversary of her passing. Here we share her yearbook photos, courtesy of Memories of Demri.

Kathleen CDP, RC, was born in Bremerton, Washington, and she worked for decades as a Substance Abuse Counselor and Addiction Therapist at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

She was the daughter of John David and Patricia Dee Austin (née Reynolds), who survives her.

She survived all her four children (Demri Lara Parrott (Feb 22, 1969 – Oct 29, 1996), Devin C. Remme (Jun 20, 1974 – 2010), Derek J. P. Murphy (Nov 15, 1980 – 2002), and David James Michael Murphy (Jun 12, 1982 – Nov 7, 2022). 

She also had a surviving sister and brother in law, Glynna & Richard Lee, her grandchildren (Jaxen & Scarlett Remme), and her longtime partner (Larry Stonehocker).

In memory of Kathleen Ann Austin, Demri's mother (02/16/1950-06/12/2023) Kathleen was born in Bremerton, WA. She worked for decades as a Substance Abuse Counselor at Harborview Medical Center (Yes, Demri found the irony of that hilarious). She is preceded in death by her four children (Demri Parrott, Devin Remme, Derek Murphy, & David Murphy), and her father (John Austin). She leaves behind her mother (Patricia Austin), her sister and brother in law (Glynna & Richard Lee), her grandchildren (Jaxen & Scarlett Remme), her longtime partner (Larry Stonehocker), and numerous extended family members and friends. Kathleen was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, but fought as long as she could. As the first ever Demri page to exist on the internet, I was unsure of how Kathleen would treat me when I first reached out to her. She immediately embraced me, and told me that she considered my contact to be, in some way, her children reaching out to her from the other side. She had a "twisted and sick" (her words) sense of humor that I loved. She was very spiritual and fully expected her children and father to be there to greet her when she passed on. Kathleen, thank you for everything. I will never forget you or your kindness.

What's the story of Demri's surnames? Why so many? Thank you!

Actually we are not 100% sure about it but here's what we found online.

According to Find a Grave Website Demri was the daughter of Kathleen Ann Austin and Dennis Wayne Dougherty. This would mean her birth name was Demri Lara Doughterty. In her obituary it also says her father was Dennis Dougherty.

According to David De Sola's book "Alice in Chains: The Untold Story" Demri was born to Kathleen and Steven Parrott (sometimes Stephen John Parrott) when she was 18 and he was 22. "Austin originally planned to name her Erin Lynn Austin, but after she and Parrott got married, the name changed. Her husband didn't like the name Erin, but he did like Lara. Austin thought she had heard the name Demery somewhere and suggested it. He asked her to write it down, and she spelled it Demri, adding Lara next to it. Parrott liked it, and when Demri was born the next day, the name stuck."

Later the same book says: "Demri's parents' marriage did not last long. Austin later married a Child Protective Services caseworker and gave birth to their son, Devin Remme, on June 20, 1974. That marriage ended in 1976, and Austin would later marry Dennis Murphy, with whom she would have two children: Derek Murphy, born November 15, 1980, and David Murphy, born on June 12, 1982. According to her mother, Demri was closest to Devin and Derek ... Like Layne, Demri used her stepfather's surname – going by Demri Murphy – while growing up but never legally changed her birth name."

So we guess that actually her birth name was Demri Lara Parrott and she was the daughter of Katheleen and Steven Parrott; but then she was adopted by her stepfather Dennis Murphy and took his surname, going by Demri Lara Murphy. As for Dennis Dougherty he maybe was Kathleen's lastest husband, not being Demri's biological father but a stepfather/adoptive father at the time of Demri's passing.

That's our guess but we may be wrong. There are many Demri blogs here in tumblr that maybe know this better for sure @demriparrottonly @demriforever @demri-parrott @dems-sugar-hiccup @demrisphotographer and many more.

Thank you for your question, though! We did a bit of research and now we should change Dem's biography!
