2023 In Books!

Due to mild fatigue, 2023 was a bad reading year for me - I did not reach my yearly 2-books-a-week goal for the first time since I began logging them, and many of the books I did read did not agree with me. But I still found ten fiction and 7 (!) non-fiction books I had to shout out for the end of the year.

Top 10 Fiction THE RED PALACE by June Hur A historical murder mystery set in Joseon Korea, featuring crystalline prose, a painstakingly evoked historical setting, and an understated romance in a dark atmosphere of terror, secrets, and palace intrigue. Despite being written for a young adult audience, this book impressed me with its complex picture of a deeply flawed real historical context.

TOOTH AND CLAW by Jo Walton A Victorian style comedy of manners in which every single character is a dragon, from the dragon parsons and spirited young lady dragons to the crotchety old dragon dowagers and feckless young dragons-about-town. All of them wear little hats. Sheer cosy perfection.

DRAKE HALL by Christina Baehr My bestie surprised me this year by spontaneously producing four whole novels pitched as "cosy Victorian gothic, with dragons". I haven't read the final edition of DRAKE HALL yet but it's sunshiney, summery, cosy goodness. With dragons.

CRIMSON BOUND by Rosamund Hodge (re-read) A dark and bloody fantasy full of lifegiving female friendship, ride or die siblings, theology, guilt, and stabbings. This one also contains gratuitous St Augustine quotes, a one-page retelling of the VOLUNDARKVIDA, and a love triangle that exists to present the heroine not so much with drama as a proper ethical dilemma.

EMILY WILDE'S ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF FAERIES by Heather Fawcett The story of a mildly autistic lady academic researching faeries with her flamboyant rival professor, who is probably secretly an exiled fae king…but the annoying part is his habit of making his students do all his field work. Cosy, thrilling, hilarious.

THE LAST TALE OF THE FLOWER BRIDE by Roshani Chokshi This gothic-infused psychological thriller was dark, creepy, and sometimes heavy, but it's also a tale that flips the roles of innocent maiden and Bluebeard, engages in valid Susan Pevensie Discourse, and ends on what I found to be a genuine note of hope and healing.

THE COLDEST GIRL IN COLDTOWN by Holly Black This book tackles vampirism as a metaphor for the evil hidden in the human heart, and it's epic, bloody, twisty, and monstrous. I couldn't put it down. Not sure I'd recommend it for the target audience, but it's mature and well-crafted enough to be enjoyed by grown-ups as well.

THE WITCHWOOD KNOT by Olivia Atwater I've read a number of Olivia Atwater books, and this one is head and shoulders above the rest. The best blend of gothic and fae, like a grown-up LABYRINTH, with one of the great fae butlers and so many subtle yet walloping feels. It felt like an old fairytale in the best possible way.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN by WR Gingell The WORLDS BEHIND series is about trauma and healing and repentance, and in this, the fourth book, everything comes decisively to the boil as our favourite twisty knife uncle pits his wits against an enemy who very uncomfortably mirrors himself.

Top 7 Non-Fiction (because I couldn't get it down to just five)

TWO VIEWS ON WOMEN IN MINISTRY by Beck & Gundry (eds.) Four New Testament scholars from a range of complementarian and egalitarian perspectives debate the question of women in ministry, with a lot of detailed scholarship. If nothing else, this book proved that this is something orthodox Christians can honestly disagree about, because there are significant exegetical strengths and difficulties with each position - it's time to stop seeing women holding ministry positions in the church as tantamount to heresy.

REFLECTIONS: ON THE MAGIC OF WRITING by Dianna Wynne Jones This collection was magical - funny and sad tales of her life, many good and passionate thoughts on books and writing, and one absolutely marvellous study of narrative structure in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Absolutely delightful and highly recommended.

PATERNAL TYRANNY by Arcangela Tarabotti A 17th-century nun takes aim at the misogyny of early modern Europe, wielding razor-sharp logic to argue boldly for the equality of women. But it's Tarabotti's passionate faith, which somehow managed to survive moral injury and spiritual abuse, and even came to see hope and encouragement in scriptures which must so often have been used against her, that will stay with me.

THE GOLDEN RHINOCEROS: HISTORIES OF THE AFRICAN MIDDLE AGES by Francois-Xavier Fauvelle A series of bite-sized essays on the medieval history of Africa from approximately the Islamic conquests of the 7th century to the arrival of Portugese colonists in the fifteenth. Each essay offers the most fleeting glimpse of a long-vanished, half-imaginary world of often breathtaking sophistication and splendour. I loved them.

ONE HOLY LOCAL CHURCH? by Bojidar Marinov This short book, which draws very solidly on past luminaries like Rutherford, Gillespie, Spurgeon, and Hodge, helped me think through some of the questions I've been asking myself about ecclesiology and the role and authority of elders, particularly as I've been rethinking women in ministry. Terrific.

TEN DAYS IN A MAD-HOUSE by Nellie Bly "People on charity should not expect anything and should not complain." In 1887, the American "girl reporter" Nellie Bly got herself locked up in a New York lunatic asylum, and this shocking expose was the result. Sometimes, nineteenth century attitudes towards women and the poor were beyond parody.

A PEOPLE'S TRAGEDY: THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION, 1891-1924 by Orlando Figes Some aspects of this book have aged poorly - the unthinking acceptance of Russian imperial aspirations, for instance - but apart from that, this is a sweeping, epic picture of the Russian Revolution, covering three decades and every level of society, from daily life in the village commune to the political rivalries of Lenin's declining years, without ever becoming dull or bogged down in detail.

I don't know if someone has said this before but The Last Time is literally a duet between James and Betty. Like hello??? Why nobody is talking about this??? How is it that a 2012 song fits so well in a supposed fictional relationship???

We already knew that the love triangle was real, but now it makes even more sense and all the other songs from Folkmore fit better in Taylor's life if The Last Time is autobiographical.

I mean, aren't both Illicit Affairs and I Knew You Were Trouble from Augustine's perspective? And All Too Well from Betty's (after breaking up with James because she found out)?

Apart from that, i find it funny that Betty and James' names fit so many people in her life. You know, Betty has a similar structure as Dianna (double t/double d) and James sounds like Jake, but Betty could also be Karlie's nickname (since her second name is Elisabeth) and James could be Taylor's because she was named after James Taylor.

And depending on who you associate the name with, the parallels still make sense: if Dianna is Betty, James is Taylor and Augustine is Karlie (and Karlie was her getaway kar); if Karlie is Betty, Taylor is James and Lily is Augustine; even if Jake is James this still works because Taylor is Betty (the one making songs about boys who doesn't say sorry). And this dynamics goes on and on because she could be Betty in Better Than Revenge and James in Getaway Car and Augustine in All Too Well. And you can definitely picture Betty singing End Game and James singing Afterglow.

And not to mention that whoever sings The 1, once sung End Game and in between Death By a Thousand Cuts.

Anyways, this is just wandering and speculation and she's been w/ Joe since 2016 and Folklore is purley fictional and those Gaylors are werid af 😜😜

Lula Payne, 92

Lula Stinson Payne, age 92, of Hays, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Rose Glen Manor. She was born August 17, 1926 in Chatham County to Marvin Durham Stinson and Mary Catherine Benner Stinson. Mrs. Payne was a graduate of Ramseur High School, previously employed with Wilkes Community College and a member of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church. Lula was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Lawrence Payne; son, Ronald Timothy Payne "Timmy"; grandson, Brandon Christopher Payne; brothers, Henry and John Stinson; sisters, Mary Dean Stinson, Elizabeth Rinehardt, Lillie Nance; and beloved sister-in-law, Katie Petty.

Surviving are her children, Nancy Payne Foster and spouse Stuart of Summerton, South Carolina, Paul Lawrence Payne, Jr. "Larry" and spouse Susie, North Wilkesboro, Donnie Lee Payne "Don" and spouse Julia of Hickory, James "Alan" Payne and spouse Nancy of Durham, Jeffrey David Payne "Jeff" and spouse Nancy of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Evan Foster of Raleigh, Andrew Payne of Clayton, Matthew Payne and spouse Megan of Wilmington, Nathan Payne and spouse Ealer of Durham, Megan Payne Linton and spouse Eddie of Pittsboro, Erin Payne of Durham, Katherine Payne "Katie" of Statesville; great grandchild, Penelope Linton of Pittsboro.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2019 at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church with Rev. Steve Snipes officiating. Burial will follow in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church from 12:00 until 1:00 on Thursday, prior to the service. The family has requested no flowers, memorials may be made to Mtn. Valley Hospice, 688 North Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Rufus Eugene "Gene" Wagoner, 74, of McGrady, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at his residence.

Rufus was born on Saturday, November 18, 1944 in Wilkes County to Raymond Hobert Wagoner and Bessie Viola Royal Wagoner.

Rufus is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eula Mae Benge Wagoner; sisters, Margie Wagoner and Geneva Wagoner.

Rufus is survived by his daughters; Lisa Fox (Jessie) of McGrady, Crystal Pierce (Mark) of Booneville; son, Daniel Wagoner of the home; brothers, Spencer Wagoner (Mae), Marvin Wagoner (Sue), all of Mulberry, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

A Visitation was April 22, at Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes Chapel. Graveside service followed in Mt. Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, North Wilkesboro with Rev. Junior Harrold officiating.

Rita Stanley, 61

Mrs. Rita "Darlene" Prevette Stanley, age 61 of Hays, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at her home.

Funeral services were April 20, at United Fellowship Church in Booneville, with Preacher Johnny Arnold and Minister Andrew Hoots officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Stanley was born September 17, 1957 in Wilkes County to Eugene E. Prevette and Doris L. Bell Prevette. She was a homemaker and a member of United Fellowship Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; Archie Lee Stanley.

Mrs. Stanley is survived by a daughter; Rita Jean Stanley McMahan of Hays, a son; Alan Lee Stanley of Hays, seven grandchildren; Kayla S. McMahan, Emmabele K. Repnyek, Avery L. Stanley, Preston C. Stanley, Abygail S. McMahan, Destiny-Hope N. McMahan, Elisabeth G. Holland, two sisters; Donna Radecke and husband Curtis of Yadkinville and Tabatha Lynn Vestal of Yadkinville and a brother; Steve Prevette and wife Sharon of Ronda.

Freeland Parsons, 85

Freeland "Hal" Parsons, age 85, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at Wilkes Senior Village. He was born April 6, 1934 in Wilkes County to Auburn and Bertha Spears Parsons. Hal was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Millers Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his brothers, Caster Parsons of Huntersville, Jackie Parsons of Millers Creek; sisters, Nadine Anderson and spouse Russell of Winston Salem, Christine Shepherd of Wilkesboro.

Graveside service was April 20, at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Millers Creek. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Vergie Patterson, 80

Mrs. Vergie Mae Absher Patterson, age 80 of North Wilkesboro, passed away April 17, 2019 at her home.

Funeral services was April 20, at Cane Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Rhoades and Rev. Kenny Absher officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Patterson was born January 21, 1939 in Wilkes County to Rom and Hattie Felts Absher. She was retired from American Drew Furniture Company. Mrs. Patterson was a member of Cane Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by a great grandson; Austin Smathers, two sisters; Mae Johnson and Mary Adams and six brothers; Olen Absher, Bill Absher, Silas Absher, Robert Absher, Fred Absher and Everette Absher.

She is survived by her husband; Jerry Patterson, two daughters; Debbie Shumate and husband Robert of McGrady and Bobbie Cranfill and husband Don of Hays, four grandchildren; Bryan Shumate, Joey Shumate, Dianna Cloud and spouse Shannon and Amy Cranfill, seven great grandchildren; Caleb Smathers, Kalei Perales, Lucas Perales, Cole Shumate, Garrett Shumate, Emma Shumate and Taelyn Shumate, a great- great grandchild; Bentley Smathers, two sisters; Kathy Bell and husband Randall of North Wilkesboro and Margie Lackey of Wilkesboro and a brother; Rev. Hobert Absher and wife Doris, of Hays.

Patrick Wyatt, 64

Patrick Steve Wyatt, age 64, of Hays, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at his home. He was born March 28, 1955 in Wayne County, Michigan to Alex Wyatt, Jr. and Ruby Johnson Wyatt. Mr. Wyatt enjoyed fishing, antique clocks and gardening. Mr. Wyatt was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Michael James Brown.

Surviving are his daughter, Tara Lytton and spouse Garron of Hickory; son, Devin Wyatt and spouse Jeremy Lazzara of Portland, Oregon; sister, Patricia Dollyhigh and spouse Randy of North Wilkesboro; and two grandchildren, Jaxton Bailey and Emmett Lytton both of Hickory.

Memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Gilreath officiating. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 2:00 until 3:00 on Sunday, prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Ina Earp, 95

Mrs. Ina Bertha Hayes Earp, age 95 of Boomer, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Graveside services were April 17, 2019 at Beaver Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. James Hall officiating.

Mrs. Earp was born July 2, 1923 in Wilkes County to Grover Cleveland Hayes and Mattie Johnson Hayes. She was an avid gardener and homemaker. Ina was known throughout her community for sharing baskets full of vegetables and flowers from her gardens. She retired from the manufacturing industry and was a life-long member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Ronald Blair Earp, a son; Jerry Nelson Earp, five sisters; Ruby Hayes Smith, Lexie Hayes Walsh, Irene Hayes Crawford, Helen Hayes Eller and Juanita Hayes Wyatt and three brothers; Clay Hayes, Parks Hayes and Earl Hayes.

Mrs. Earp is survived by four grandchildren; Terri Diane Earp Jesenovic Gehringer and husband Earl, Ricky Blair Earp Jesenovic, Linda Sue Earp McClure and husband Doug and Leigh Ann Earp Nunn and husband Eric, five great-grandchildren; Kayla Diane Gehringer Michalik and husband Nick, Kenneth Aaron Gehringer and wife Nicole, Katie Mae Gehringer, Jeri Nicole McClure and Michael Jerrold Nunn, three great great grandchildren; Braxton Collins, Avery Gehringer and Mason Gehringer, a brother; Franklin Peeler Hayes and special caregivers; Barbara Gant and Nellie Rash and several special nieces and nephews.

Robert Stipe, 77

Mr. Robert Louis Stipe, age 77 of Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at his home.

Memorial services were April 23, at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Eddie Tharpe officiating.

Mr. Stipe was born January 28, 1942 in Ann Arbor, MI to Louis Reginald and Frances Smith Stipe. He was the Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Wilkes Regional Medical Center prior to his retirement.

Mr. Stipe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Marta Carroll Hawthorne-Henry Stipe and a son; James David Stipe.

He is survived by a daughter; Julia Ann Robertson and husband; John Sheagrn of Myrtle Beach, SC, two sons; Ronald Laurance Stipe and wife Barbara Lynn of Concord, NC and Kenneth Douglas Stipe of St. Augustine, FL, five grandchildren; Josh Robertson and wife Angela, Conner Stipe, Landon Stipe, Thomas Stipe and Liam Jarvis, two great grandchildren; Callum Robertson and Adella Robertson and a brother; John Stipe and wife Dee.

Walter Pennell, 76

Walter Jerry Pennell, age 76, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at Westwood Hills Nursing & Rehab Center. He was born June 13, 1942 in Wilkes County to Glenn and Marie Miller Pennell. Mr. Pennell was a US Air Force Veteran and a member of Fishing Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR, basketball and spending time with his dogs, Dixie and Sophie. Mr. Pennell was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Cynthia Ray Pennell.

Surviving are his son, William G. Pennell of Navarre, Florida; daughter, JoAnn E. Dagenhart and spouse Kenneth of Corydon, Indiana; daughter, Kim Swofford of Wilkesboro, son, Chris Jarvis of Wilkesboro, daughter, Donna Coats and spouse Tony of Clayton, daughter, Missy Cayton of Raleigh, son, Don Cayton of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Jordan Dagenhart of Corydon, Indiana, Brenna Pennell and Amanda Hall both of Warner Robbins, Georgia; Morgan Swofford, Christyn Jarvis, Samantha Jarvis, and grandchildren who called him Jer-Jer, Carleigh Cayton, Ireland Cayton, Leah Cayton; great grandson, Robert Jarvis.

Funeral service was April 20, at Fishing Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Gregory officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
