disclaimer: my Niche of biology is very much on the medical side. that’s why i’m specializing in cancer biology! i’ve stayed faaar away from the ecology/evolution side of the department since that just is not my jam, so i can’t offer any advice on those kinds of classes. but i WILL graduate having taken every single bios elective about cancer in the undergrad catalog, so i can definitely speak to those!
these are all the upper level bios electives i’ve taken, and i would recommend any of them depending on what you’re looking for:

bios 25108 cancer biology (w)
a comprehensive introduction to how cancer works! i took this on a whim and it literally redefined the trajectory of my life. the material is super interesting but accessible without prior experience and it’s also not a ton of work, which imo is the best kind of class. there’s short weekly homeworks, the exams lean more on concepts/thinking through problems in research & treatment than on making you memorize content, and there’s a journal club component (every other week i think?) where you learn how to critique and present papers. i recommend this class to EVERYONE i know.
bios 25109 topics: reproductive bio/cancer (s)
this course is split into halves taught by two different profs in their areas of expertise, breast cancer and macrophages in cancer. i took it last spring and really liked it! this one goes into more detail about experiment design in cancer research, but the profs are both great lecturers who do a nice job leading you through it. taking 25108 before this class can definitely help, but it’s not a must. there was no homework when i took this class, only participation points (in class and weekly paper discussions) and exams.
bios 25308 heterogeneity in human cancer: etiology and treatment (a)
i just took this and loooooved it. definitely not for the faint of heart, though; i’ve been working in a cancer research lab for over a year now and definitely would have been overwhelmed without that context. but maybe you’re braver than me! if you’re interested and willing to push yourself, give it a go!
every week the prof gives a lecture introducing cancers of a different organ, then there’s an in depth discussion of a recent paper about that cancer and you write a short paper (1-2 pages) about a related topic of your choice, leading up to a comprehensive take-home final exam.
this class is designed for aspiring researchers & oncologists. they assume you’re already comfortable dissecting complicated papers, brainstorming solutions to current challenges in the field, and diving into the literature to find answers to questions on your own. i believe you need at least a B+ in 25108 or instructor consent to take the class.
if you want a challenge class, this one is so rewarding and surprisingly doable -- yes, they ask a lot of you, but you’re graded on surprisingly little of it (only the weekly writeups and the final) and just about everyone in the class ends up doing really well. i feel SO much more prepared to write my thesis after taking this class.
bios 25326 tumor microenvironment and metastasis (s)
this class is taught by two researchers who run an ovarian cancer lab! of all the cancer-focused classes, this is the one that’s the most technical and geared towards memorization. you learn all about different cell types in the microenvironment, techniques to study the microenvironment and metastasis, and a bit of cancer metabolism. there’s no journal club component or participation points on this class, only exams. i had to take it remotely last spring, but supposedly the profs normally take you into their lab and let you take a stab at some of the techniques you’re learning about!
my favorite part of the class: a guest lecture from a pathologist who showed us slides of different gynecological cancers and talked us through the diagnosis process. SO cool.
bios 25228 endocrinology iii: human disease (s)
i’ve heard good things about all the endocrinology classes (25226/25227/25228), but this is the only one i’ve personally taken. very cool class! it’s broken into chunks focusing on different diseases taught by physicians who specialize in treating them. it feels a bit like a peek into med school for undergrads.
the tricky thing is that your grade comes ONLY from exams, and there’s no curve, so that can be stressful. the exams are fairly straightforward, though, and the course directors always provide past exams for you to practice with. i definitely recommend taking physiology before taking this class -- i did it the other way around and that made it a lot harder than it needed to be.
the other endocrinology classes focus on signaling (25226, fall) and hormone systems (25227, winter). you can take them in any order and they’re run the same way if this description^ appeals to you!
bios 25327 health disparities in breast cancer (w)
i’m actually taking this in the upcoming quarter! it’s a discussion class taught by a series of MD lecturers. hopefully it’s good. this could be a good one if you need a bios elective credit but you like classes on the social science-y side.
bios 28101 science communication: writing a digital science story (a)
just took this one. you spend all quarter learning about science communication and workshopping pieces that the profs later help you publish! the profs are wonderful, you learn a lot by giving and receiving peer feedback, and you learn actual practical skills that will serve you well no matter where you go. shocking, i know!
finally, a few classes i haven’t taken but have heard good things about:
bios 24217 conquest of pain (w): when i tell you i’ve been dreaming of this class since i applied and wanted to take it SO BADLY! unfortunately this one’s in high demand and fills up every year. you learn about the biology of anesthesia from an anesthesiologist and WATCH HIS SURGERIES. if you can ever snag a spot, take this and let me live vicariously through you please.
bios 24101 foundations of neuroscience (a): i did actually take this, but i realized just too late to drop it that i.....actually really hate neuroscience. oops. that one’s one me. could be a very good class if you like it, though!
bios 21507 stem cell biology, regeneration, and disease modeling (w): i was very briefly in this class at one point but needed to drop it to make more room in my schedule. the one lecture i attended was very cool, though -- it’s a crash course in tissue engineering!
bios 22249 principles of toxicology (a): dude. you get to study how POISONS work. so fascinating, probably heavy on the chemistry though.

1 A beginning
In Paris, an artist painting in a studio that used to be part of a monastery. She goes out and gets the largest drawing papers she can find. Surrounded by paint pots and brushes, it’s an image that belongs in a tradition of artists painting away in Parisian garrets, only this is not that story. What Clare Strand was painting in her Paris studio during a three-month residency at the Centre Photographique d'Ile-de-France in 2017 was a translation of pre-existing photographs that were ‘read’ to her over the phone by her husband in the UK. From across the English Channel, he would give her directions that would encode an image of his choosing, and she would paint it.
2 Transmission
Strand and her husband were following an existing model. The method they were using to transmit information was described in George H. Eckhardt’s ‘Electronic Television’, from 1936, in which he outlined how a photograph can be transmitted via code over telegraph. In this system, the original image is divided into a grid, with every square being given a value from 1 to 10. 1 is white, 2 has a tinge of grey, 3 is greyer, 4 darker and so on until 10, which is black. The initial source images from which Strand’s husband chose the images he would transmit to her were 10-by-8 inches, which they divided into a grid of forty-nine squares across and sixty down, each about 5 square millimetres. If it’s boring to read, imagine the couple’s phone conversations: he would call and say 24-2; 25-4; 26-5; and so on. Through conversation, with Strand following her husband’s direction, the language would form a representation of the original image. Like a human fax machine.
3 The result
Is a series of ten black-and-white paintings in acrylic on paper. The history of art brings forth associations and relations, from the development of the grid as a foundation for perspective in the Renaissance, to the nineteenth-century illusionism achieved through Pointillism. There are Gerhard Richter’s black-and-white paintings, László Moholy-Nagy’s telephone paintings, Agnes Martin’s feather-light grids. But the connection to the history of art crumbles in front of the actual framed paintings. They’re human, Strand says, as she reasserts that she is not a painter. They’re messy, imperfect. There are hairs that stuck to the paper, dust congealed into the paint. However, in installation shots of the whole series, they look like another kind of work. Photographed, the paintings seem faultless: the black, white and grey hues reminiscent of aestheticized black-and-white photography; the paintings look clean, their edges not frayed, the small mistakes blend into the frame. It’s like they have two lives, as object and as image. When I ask Strand which one matters more, she answers, ‘I don’t know. What I find ironic is that, as much I try to push “photography” into different mediums, I can never escape the camera and how it operates as a tool of representation. With each press or catalogue reproduction, the paintings are represented as photographs, which is somewhat at odds with the concept of the work – photography transposing into painting only then to be represented by photography!’
4 Utility
To talk about the history of art and about installation shots is to ignore how the objecthood of the paintings depends on their creation. This series, titled The Discrete Channel with Noise, is at once the result of and the documentation of communication and its possible failures. Looking at the paintings, I want to say they look pixelated, but that would make them more photo than painting, more final product than process.
5 The first man who saw the first photograph
The relationship between painting and photography always makes me think of Roland Barthes writing in his essay on photography, Camera Lucida, that ‘The first man who saw the first photograph (if we except Niépce, who made it) must have thought it was a painting: same framing, same perspective. Photography has been, and is still, tormented by the ghost of Painting.’ Later in the book, he writes about photography’s relationship to reality, or to the document: ‘No writing can give me this certainty. It is the misfortune (but also perhaps the voluptuous pleasure) of language not to be able to authenticate itself.’ The photo as confirmation of fact. That fact, that reality, is communicated over phone lines in The Discrete Channel with Noise. When we look at a photograph, what we’re looking for, according to Barthes, is knowledge that a thing, an event, happened. He writes about Polish soldiers in a 1915 photo by André Kertész: ‘that they were there; what I see is not a memory, an imagination, a reconstitution, a piece of Maya, such as art lavishes upon us, but reality in a past state: at once the past and the real.’ What we see, in The Discrete Channel with Noise, is a story about reality rather than proof thereof.
6 Whizzing through the air
When I meet Strand, she hands me an assortment of notes. She’s hesitant about it for a minute, as if giving me homework rather than help. Or as if she expects communication can fail, and thinks a list of references may offer a way out of an impasse. The history of Morse code; pigeon post between Paris and England c. 1870–71; Eckhardt; Cybernetics founder Norbert Weiner and American mathematician Claude Shannon’s information theory, which gave The Discrete Channel with Noise its title: Strand’s research does not explain as much as expand the work. And then in the notes is a quote from the 1973 movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory based on Roald Dahl’s writing, recreating Eckhardt’s transmission of images over radio. Here the character Mike Teavee, the winner of the fourth golden ticket, who loves this technology, explains: “You photograph something then the photograph is split up in to millions of tiny pieces and they go whizzing through the air, then down to your TV set when they are all put together in the right order”

That it is possible to share an image, and the labyrinthine process of it whizzing through the air is in line with Dahl’s 1971 book, in which the candy factory includes an impenetrable room-sized machine that, when operated, makes a lot of noise, takes a lot of time, and then produces a single bit of chewing gum. 7 Thirty-six images on a journey
The ten images in The Discrete Channel with Noise were chosen from a collection of thirty-six images Strand has compiled for a previous work, The Entropy Pendulum (2015), in which each of these photographs, which were taken from a tabloid newspaper’s archive, was eroded by the weight of a pendulum over the course of one day in an exhibition, then framed. Strand rephotographed the physical photos from the archive, creating a digital output that becomes a dataset ready for reuse. The subject of those images related to what Strand refers to as the subject of her work in general – magic, illusion, the paranormal, communication, transmission, the way people thought communication technologies were magical when they were first introduced, the way Alexander Graham Bell called the telephone a way to ‘talk with electricity’. The project is a metaphor, if not a realization, for what images do anyway: in flux, they move and shift in meaning.
8 Shifting in meaning
Why pay attention to shifts? Because shifts in context can mean that information is lost, or misused. An art historian friend of mine regularly points out that Alexander Nix, the founder and CEO of Cambridge Analytica, studied art history in university. Art matters, images matter, she wants to say. All channels of misinformation need to be decoded. Is there a present and a real, like Barthes thought there was in an only slightly less technological time than the one we occupy, today? Or is the subject of study now how realities are fractured across channels of communication?
9 An entire history of communication
The diagram used to explain Eckhardt’s ‘Electronic Television’ has a man sitting at a table in front of a large black-and-white image divided into a grid of a woman with short, curly hair who looks a bit like an early Hollywood film star. His sleeves are rolled up, his back a bit hunched, he is clearly concentrating. He holds a long pointer stick and taps information onto a device resting on the desk he is sitting at. The cable running from that device spirals into a growing network of telephone poles that reach a window, and from that window to a box on the wall, and straight from the box to a set of headphones that another man wearing a blazer (or is it a lab coat?) standing in front of a large grid, only partially completed with the recognisable top of the short-haired woman’s head. He holds a paint brush at the same spot the other man’s pointer is. Behind him on a table are 10 boxes of paint numbered from 1 (white) to 10 (black) and some paint brushes. The caption reads, ‘Fig. 26. A Simple Method for Sending Pictures by Wire or Radio.’
Visually, it matters that the example is always a woman and the transmitters and receivers are always men. The message is that even in new technologies, even in a new world, some old signals remain. That is what Eckhardt’s diagram exemplifies. An entire history of communication reinforces the idea of who gets to speak across these lines. It is therefore fitting that The Discrete Channel of Noise is structured and executed by a female artist.
10 A piece of Maya
When Barthes writes that ‘no writing can give me this certainty’, he is asserting photography’s relationship to what he calls ‘the real’. But as a writer, he must have known that it is the rest of the above-cited list – ‘a memory, an imagination, a reconstitution, a piece of Maya’ – that is one of the potentials of art: to reconstitute is a way of reimagining the world. After Cambridge Analytica, or in line with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I want to argue that the redefinition or the exploration of that real is the contemporary condition. We come to things with suspicion, some of which is about recognising the failures of the systems around us. But we also come to them with a sense of possibility, a remnant of the Maya or the three-course meal chewing gum: the idea that the world is a story, and it can be shared.

Can a Neuroscience Video Game Treat ADHD?
On the homepage of the health technology company Akili Interactive, there sits an intriguing line of copy: “Time to Play Your Medicine.”
That tagline serves as something of a futuristic mission statement for the Boston-based company, which focuses on bringing brain-training video games to market and is seeking to produce the first FDA-approved game treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. If it succeeds, it will be the first alternative to stimulant medication approved for the disorder—they’re calling it “digital treatment.”
Backed by rigorous research, the game, called Project: Evo, now in Phase III clinical trials—and Akili as a whole—were born out of Neuroscape, a neuroscience research lab led by Adam Gazzaley at the University of California, San Francisco.
Gazzaley, a neurologist and neuroscientist by training, was originally searching for experimental treatments to improve brain function using digital technology. Soon after, his team hit on video games as a way to help both kids and adults strengthen executive functioning skills like concentration and attention. Since playing games naturally keeps our motivation high, ADHD might be ideally receptive to the treatment, they reasoned.
Medications and therapeutic approaches for treating ADHD have been around since the middle of the last century. The idea to leverage video games rooted in neuroscience research is much more recent, but early studies into its effectiveness appear promising.
“There’s so much need,” Gazzaley tells EdSurge, “for children with ADHD, to have an alternative other than a stimulant, which is the only FDA-approved treatment now. So it really made sense for us from both an impact point of view, as well as a business point of view, to bring the first non-drug treatment to market.”
The Motivation Factor
Depending on estimates, between 5 and 10 percent of school-aged children have been diagnosed with ADHD, which impacts attention, impulse control and emotional regulation. When a child is diagnosed, parents are currently given a short list of treatment options, including stimulant drugs and behavior modification therapy. Stimulants, or medications such as Ritalin or Adderall, target chemicals in the brain that regulate emotional responses and concentration. They can also come with undesirable side effects, which some parents are wary of. But when they work, they work fast.
“The extraordinary thing about stimulants, which is not true of many other classes of medication, is that you give it on Tuesday and it works on Tuesday,” explains Heidi M. Feldman, a professor of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Stanford. “It’s a short-acting drug with short-acting effects.”
Yet stimulants, which are taken by about 6 percent of kids in the U.S., don’t address underlying causes. It’s like taking an aspirin for a toothache, Feldman explains: It only offers symptom relief. For this reason, these drugs are often prescribed alongside behavior modification therapy, which takes much longer to work, Feldman says. And unlike stimulants, which are administered directly to the child, behavior modification relies on a licensed behavioral therapist training parents and teachers to implement strategies on a day-to-day basis.
While ADHD limits attention, it doesn’t diminish it entirely. Feldman says kids with the disorder can often concentrate on certain activities for long periods of time when their motivation is high. She singles out video games as a common example. The challenge, she adds, is keeping motivation high for kids during activities, such as homework, when it’s typically low.
To increase motivation, behavior modification strategies often reward positive interactions and discourage negative ones. Some approaches seem like they’re straight out of a video game. Feldman describes one as a “token economy,” where kids are given chips when they demonstrate the target behavior and lose chips when they do not. At the end of the day, kids receive a prize if their token balance is net positive. In general, behavior therapy works when rewards and consequences are immediate and frequent so that children learn to distinguish appropriate actions from inappropriate ones.
To video game enthusiasts, the token economy might resemble the golden coins in Super Mario Bros., where players win coins for navigating the game carefully but lose them for slipping up.
Over time, the idea is that kids need these external motivators less and less. “Ideally, like the rest of us, as we get older, those external signals go internal,” Feldman says, meaning they become self-regulated. “This kind of thing really does work.”
One issue with the treatment: supply hasn’t quite caught up to demand. “A lot of people are keen on behavior management and the struggle is there aren’t enough resources to meet the needs,” Feldman says. In other words, because it relies on human training and interaction, it doesn’t scale like technology. That’s where Gazzaley’s video game treatment might have an edge.
Closing the Loop
ADHD isn’t the only area Gazzaley’s Neuroscape team is invested in. They’re also researching how video games can improve aging minds and even whether brain stimulation via electrical currents can boost cognitive abilities. But games make up the lion’s share of the team’s work.
Since its founding in 2005, the lab has tested a variety of games. Some use principles of meditation and mindfulness, while others use music and rhythm. And one collection of games borrows from interactive consoles like the Nintendo Wii to integrate physical fitness challenges with cognitive ones. But they all have something in common: the closed loop system.
Generally speaking, a loop is simply a way to provide feedback to a player. When a player performs an action like clicking a button, the game, in accordance with the rules, delivers an outcome, good or bad. That’s called “closing the loop,” and in Neuroscape games, it’s a very rapid process. Challenges and rewards are constantly being updated based on real-time data collected from the player. For a child with ADHD, the idea is to provide frequent feedback and motivation while training neural networks to sustain attention.
Each game is based on years of research and designed to target different neural systems intentionally. And unlike many brain training games and apps on the market, Gazzaley tries to infuse as much production value and narrative as possible so they look and play much like a major studio effort. Because these games are primarily in research phase, none are in wide release.
“We’re still testing and testing, so the degree that we take these games through, double-blind, randomized control trials, is also a unique aspect of them,” Gazzaley says.
Currently, the lab has six randomized control trials in process involving control groups and placebos. They look at brain activity and other physiological measures, such as stress response and mood. “We want to understand the full scope of how these games could induce change across the entire array of human performance,” Gazzaley adds.
Training the Brain
Back in 2008, Gazzley’s team created Neuroracer, an early experiment in brain training. Players use a controller to navigate a fast car along a twisting road. Designed for a single player, it’s not a traditional racing game. Instead, players compete against their own reflexes. In addition to keeping the car from straying into the shoulders on either side, they must also react in split seconds to green or red signals, which require them to either hit a button or ignore, and are designed to trip up the distracted or complacent player.
That the game requires a high degree of multitasking is no accident. It’s by design. Players score higher when they stay in the center of the road and ignore the trick signals. They do worse when they focus more on one task than another.

According to Gazzaley, the games literally retrain the brain, or more specifically the neural networks responsible for skills like paying attention. “The goal is to strengthen the networks that involve the prefrontal cortex”—the part of the brain responsible for controlling executive function—“so that other tasks that are different but use similar networks, are strengthened,” he explains.
Improving concentration and reflexes within a video game is one thing. But being able to apply those same skills outside the game environment, known as transfer of learning, is much more challenging. Any intervention that can show transfer in research trials is generally considered successful.
Such was the case in a study that Gazzaley co-authored in 2013, which made the cover of international science journal, Nature. In it, the researchers found that playing Neuroracer helped older adults improved overall multitasking compared with a control group of untrained 20-year-olds. And gains weren’t short-lived, but persisted for as long as six months after the training ended. When participants were tested on other cognitive abilities, such as working memory and attention, they showed improvements as well, which served as a significant indication that transfer had taken place.
In recent years, Neuroracer has received a significant retooling with improved graphics and a progressive storyline, picking up a new name—Project: Evo—along the way. It’s also moved out of the lab and over to Akili, the private company Gazzaley spun out of Neuroscape, which manages the games as clinical treatments, rather than research projects.
Instead of driving a car, players now control a more human-like avatar. Project: Evo looks like any other tablet-based game kids might tap on during a long car ride. But it still retains the same basic brain-training focus on multitasking.

The research coming out of the lab suggests the treatment is effective. A recent study of more than 300 participants found that kids who used a Project: Evo game showed significant improvements on a special test designed to assess attention compared with a control group that played a different, non-brain-training video game.
Another study of 57 children with sensory processing disorder (half of whom displayed ADHD symptoms) found encouraging results in overall sustained attention after playing a Neuroscape game 30 minutes a day at home for four weeks (which is considered a full dose of treatment). After the study, a third of the kids with sensory processing disorder were no longer considered inattentive. And parents reported gains persisting as long as nine months after the treatment.
Gazzaley’s ultimate goal is to see the game receive FDA approval and become the first video game treatment for ADHD, and possibly other conditions in the future.
“Once it is FDA-approved, then we will be moving to market with a treatment that will be hopefully be prescribed by doctors, either in place of stimulants, or alongside them,” he says.
