Creative campaign ‘The Future’s Bright, The Future’s Black’ has launched as a building takeover of marketing services organisation ENGINE’s central London office to highlight the underrepresented talent of the industry’s creative future
London, 22nd October 2020: Four graduates from Brixton Finishing School, a digital programme providing skills and real-world advertising experiences to young people from under-represented groups, have created a building takeover of the London headquarters of the UK’s largest independent marketing services organisation ENGINE. The takeover coincides with Black History Month and celebrates the black UK talent of the future.
The brief was provided by ENGINE Creative and aims to accelerate the pace of change and showcase the potential talent that will shape the industry’s future by turning Black History Month into Black Future Month. The line ‘The Future’s Bright, The Future’s Black’ was conceived and developed by the students and spans across the second to fourth floors of ENGINE’s Great Portland Street Offices. The ground floor windows also feature images of the Brixton Finishing School graduates, helping to raise their own profiles as well as the profile of black creative talent across the UK.
As part of the campaign, a microsite has also been developed to act as a platform for the students and wider young black talent to showcase their work, ambitions and their inspirational black role models. The four graduates have also been offered internships with ENGINE to start in 2021 as part of their ongoing commitment to achieve better representation in the creative industry and within their own organisation. Further, ENGINE will be supporting the charity’s mentoring scheme and providing speakers for its course.
Launched in 2018, the Brixton Finishing School is the brainchild of Ally Owen, former exec at Unruly, MailOnline and Yahoo. Ally saw the urgent need to diversify talent in advertising and encourage untapped talent from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds - whether BAME, neuro-diverse, or female – into the industry through training and work experience. This is the beginning of a partnership between the programme and ENGINE, and the first project the two organisations have worked together on. These are great tools to take advantage of because, since they are ‘open’, it is useable at any time for any person to join. These types of platforms, such as FaceBook and SnapChat, are heavily used in society because of this, and for education purposes this means it is something important to teach, while also being easily available at any time for immersive learning.
Immersive Education uses several virtual environments as engaging teaching styles including virtual worlds, learning games, simulations and full-augmented-reality. One that was talked about and shown in a video earlier this semester was the virtual eco-system used by middle-schools. The virtual eco-system allows students to virtually enter a digital world and interact with the subject matter, learning it more effectively since they are heavily engaged. Also, the virtual world allows students to enter and see things that would normally not be possible - such as going under water in the winter, seeing molecules and bacteria, etc. During the same video, a question that Dr. Walsh answered from the crowd at the end was “…worldwide there has been a decline in historic place visiting…particularly marked in the united States…does Immersive Ed have a solution for that, are there opportunities in relation to virtual world for revisiting the real world”. This brings up a great application for immersive learning because a virtual world can be used as an “advertisement” for people to visit the actual attraction. Historical sites can use virtual worlds to entice people to not only visit for the first time, but also to re-visit the digital version of the site after they see it in person. Dr. Walsh says this is a 2-way street which is very true - there are two ways for the concept to work and both are very effective.

During Dr. Walsh’s Collaborative Computing course, taken through Boston College, students are introduced to many different concepts, types of technology, and even best-practices for various forms of social media. Students are instructed on how to create various social media accounts, such as FaceBook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr and Google+, and explore their many capabilities. Dr. Walsh teaches students how to post content, share content, comment on others content, follow other users, create tags etc., all of which teaching students the importance of these technologies in today’s society, their capabilities in today’s society, and several best-practices for efficiently reaching an audience. Social media is a huge part of today’s society for both leisure and work, and Immersive Education makes sure that because of this, they are a huge part of the course material as well. In addition, Virtual Worlds are used in this course as immersive learning tools so that students can interact with one another as embodied virtual humans. For this practice, the course utilizes programs such as Second Life and MineCraft which are virtual environments for users to build, explore and interact with other users.
In order to share the initiative of immersive learning, Immersive Education Summits are held across the globe to help others learn about not only Immersive Education itself, but also to learn about relevant concepts to teach in students in today’s technology-driven society. In 2015, Immersive Education hosted IMMERSION 2015 which “...addresses the personal and cultural impact of immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality, augmented reality (AR), holograms and holography, wearable computing, mechanical and neural brain interfaces, cybernetics, affective computing, neuro-gaming technologies that are used to create adaptive and radically compelling game experiences, 3D printing, personal robotics, telepresence, virtual worlds, simulations, game-based learning and training systems, and fully immersive environments such as caves and domes”(http://summit.immersiveeducation.org/). As a part of the Collaborative Computing course, taught by Dr. Aaron Walsh at Boston College, students are taught how to be a part of the “Immersive Education Initiative conference Outreach Team”, and are able to use this title as a resume item afterwards. Students are tasked and taught to source educators in the nearby area from Colleges, Universities, High Schools and K-12, and then learn how to write a formal email to the educators, sharing with them the upcoming BlockChain Summit.

So, when a story enthralls us, we are inside of it, feeling what the protagonist feels,
and experiencing it as if it were indeed happening to us.
So there you have it, you can hear it, see it, smell it, taste it, feel it…
Yet it’s completely invisible.
Every culture on the planet has storytelling built into its DNA.
It’s how traditions and customs and norms are passed through the generations.

The Hero’s Journey Also known as the Monomyth, The Hero’s Journey was conceptualized by Joseph Campbell in his
book, A Hero With A Thousand Faces.
This story structure has been used in films, and comics, and literature around the world.
It features a hero — also known as the protagonist — as they are called to awaken their potential by setting out on a difficult journey, and ultimately triumphing over adversity.
The Hero’s Journey, which has inspired marketers and screenwriters throughout the past century,
can be summarized into three main acts: The first is The Departure: When an external
event compels the Hero to leave their ordinary world.
Second, The Initiation: When the hero ventures into an unfamiliar territory (also known as
the “unknown world"), meets a mentor or guide and, of course, deals with a variety
of trials and challenges along the way.
And lastly, The Return: The Hero overcomes their struggles and is stronger and wiser,
returning to their Ordinary World with a sense of victory.
You can clearly see this story arc in works like Star Wars, Batman, Game of Thrones
Number Two !! "Future Pacing"
Future Pacing is a type of storytelling that allows the reader to imagine themselves in
their ideal future.
It’s a technique famously used in Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP, a unique approach to influential
communication that is used by many of the world's notable communicators like Oprah,
Martin Luther King, Tony Robbins, and many more.
Now NLP is a whole science that takes hours and hours and hours to master,
but this one particular technique can be used pretty powerfully in copywriting
The only thing you really need to know is the ONE thing your prospects are looking for.
That singular benefit.
And once you’ve discovered it, use Future Pacing throughout your sales copy to help
them visualize their dream life – or in other words, the life that they’d have AFTER
you help them overcome their problem.
Remember, your brain can not tell the difference between positive memories that have already happened or positive future dreams.
So by allowing your reader to imagine what’s to come, you’re telling their brain that
it’s already happened and therefore possible to achieve.
If you can believe it, you can achieve it, as they say.
The trick, though, is to use present tense so that their brain recognizes it as an event
that is happening or has already happened.
It’s also important to get highly specific with your future pacing.
Number Three !!"The Trouble Maker"
Trouble creates drama, drama creates attention, therefore making the story more memorable and effective
And, of course, the trouble scenarios i write about reflect the problem that his product or service is attempting to solve.
i encourages copywriters to introduce trouble early on to capture attention and
there are two ways you can do this...
The first is what I call The Build-Up: Where everything seems to be going right, you’re
setting the scene, you’re describing the main character, you’re building the tension…
Ad then, just as the reader suspects, everything goes terribly wrong…
And the second is what I call the “Sh*t Storm”: Where you start your story right in the middle of chaos.
Making your reader go- Wait?
What?
How did we get here?
What happened?
And how do we get out?
You’ll see this technique used more and more nowadays because people want trouble
right away!
Or else they get bored and they bounce.
The key though is to draw your prospects into that story world, and then turn it upside
down with trouble.
So this can be done by describing color, emotions, season, time, texture, activity, geography,
mood, sound, or even smell.
This technique is conceptualized by Blake Snyder in his bestselling screenwriting book,
Save The Cat!
Number four! " The Before-After-Bridge"
This B-A-B technique is one of the simplest copywriting tools that has been
used in advertising since the dawn of the Mad Men era.
The Before-After-Bridge works because it moves your prospect from focusing on features and tools, to how it will help them improve their life.
So here’s a quick breakdown.
In the Before: You show your reader the world before your solution.
The key is to get them to identify with the problem you are presenting.
A company that uses this technique really well is M.M.La Fleur, a wardrobe solution

It goes something like this: “You’re bored of wearing boring pant suits but you have
