Tumblr Day 4 Post: Hopeful Solutions
Although there is not much teachers can do about state standardized tests, there are still hopeful solutions for helping our English learner students. One way that teachers can assist their students is by differentiation. Adapt the instructional phase, post-instructional phase, and assessment for these learners depending on the level of English. Many teachers would like to cut out parts of the instructional goal or essential content for their English learners, but we want to keep the same expectations for all students. This way students know that their teachers are confident in them and want the best for their education! Another hopeful solution to assist in English learner’s education is developing a personal interest in the students and learning about their background. Incorporating parts of their home life will make students more comfortable in the classroom and help teachers gain a better perspective about their students. When a teacher takes the times to learn about the home life of a child, their interests, and their struggles, they can use aspects of the child’s life and incorporate them into everyday life at school. This also may answer any questions that the teacher has about the student and builds empathy towards the child. By learning about the home life of children, parents may also feel more inclined to get involved in their children’s education. Parent involvement, especially for English learners, is crucial to their success. If there are any other hopeful solutions that you can think of for English learners or other types of diverse learners, let us know! Join the conversation with the hashtag #diverselearner

What are some solutions to struggles students face who are of low-socioeconomic status?

Students of low socioeconomic status should be considered when teachers are designing lesson plans and when they are considering what course materials they want to use. For example, during the instructional phase how can you design your lesson plan to use technology only in the classroom? To use technology in the classroom and outside the classroom the technology must fit certain standards. The technology must be, active, constructive, collaborative, and goal orientated. As teachers, we should try to come up with ways for technology use to hit these standards in the classroom. When it comes to homework and take-home assignments, try to come up with other ways to hit these same standards without the use of technology. This way, students who are low-socioeconomic status who do not possess technology at home are able to complete the assignment.
For example, you can have the students complete a math related game on the iPad in class and create questions for the students to reflect on the game at home. This way, all the students are completing the technology use component at school. If teachers center their instruction this way, students who are low-socioeconomic status will not struggle to complete the homework assignments, because of lack of technology at home. Another way you can use technology effectively in your classroom is, giving the children some readings to complete (readings should be on paper, or in a textbook) based on the technology the students used in class. There are a lot of ways you can integrate technology into your classroom, but just make sure you integrate the technology in ways that are effective for students who are low-socioeconomic status.

Tumblr Day 3 Post: Articulating Obstacles
When designing and implementing instruction that is “good for children,” specifically ELs, there are many obstacles that could stand in the way. Some of the challenges that teachers face may not even be in their control. One example of these types of obstacles are state standardized tests. English learners are expected to take the same assessments that their peers who are fluent in English take. There is no differentiation or special help that they may receive. When taking the test, they will most likely be frustrated and confused and there is nothing teachers can do to help them at all. Receiving a report back that is negative can be discouraging for these students and their parents. In general, the way that English learners are assessed can be a true obstacle for educators. Even if we follow the assessment writing guidelines for subjectively and objectively scored items and write quality assessments on our own tests, ELs may still struggle. In some countries that these learners come from, multiple choice questions are not used at all. Imagine traveling to a different country, taking a test with academic content in a different language, and then not even recognizing the type of test questions. Teachers would like to focus on getting English learners acclimated to their surroundings and feeling comfortable in the classroom, but they do have to be assessed just like every other student. Assessments must be thoughtfully designed in order to effectively test English learners. Have you ever seen any examples of unfair assessment towards English learners or any other group of diverse learner in your education experience? Are you yourself an English learner with personal experience regarding this topic? Use the hashtag #diverselearners to continue the conversation.
