Visited a Japanese NPO “Learning for All”

I believe it is really important to know the situation children are facing and people who are trying to make better environment for children in home country before engaging the CSC project.

Last Saturday, I got a chance to see the activity of “Learning for All (LFA)”, a NPO based in Tokyo. I met Ishigami-san, who is a manager of PR and fund-raising in LFA. He is friendly, open-minded and passionate about education. Ishigami-san took time for me to explain their activity and issues that many Japanese children are facing, and what he feels through his activity. He gave me some valuable advices which should be useful for me in the CSC project.

I also visited a location where volunteers of LFA were working. LFA sends a lot of university students as volunteer to give learning support without any charge to kids who are struggling with difficult situation in terms of economy, their school life or family. We could see that many children were seriously studying with the support of volunteers and the encouragement by them. I was so impressed by the volunteers who have strong passion and are highly motivated. No, it can’t be described just as passion and motivated. I was so moved by their smile and sincere effort to understand and communicate with each child.

Their activity is not as easy and simple as “voluntary activity when you are free”. They must pass an interview by LFA, know character, academic ability, likes and dislikes of each child. They should spend a large amount time to prepare for customized lessons and teach children even in weekends. Although it was just 30 minutes for me to observe the lessons, children looked working very hard to respond to the effort of volunteers. I also reaffirm that the situation of children who need special support differs by each person.

After the tour, Ishigami-san said  “‘Field’ is everything for their activity”. I will keep this word in my heart until the end of my CSC activity in Bulgaria.

CSCでプロジェクトを開始する前に、母国での子どもの置かれている状況や、子どもにとってより良い環境を作ろうとしている方々のことを知るのは重要なこと。そう思い、IBMと過去に社会貢献プログラムでご縁のあった “Learning for All (LFA)”というNPOの方をご紹介いただきました。ご紹介いただいたのはLFAで広報・資金調達部のご担当をされている石神さんです。石神さんはとてもフレンドリーでオープンで教育に対して熱い想いをお持ちの方です。LFAの活動内容や日本の子どもの教育に関する課題、日々石神さんが活動を通じて感じていらっしゃることなどをお話いただいたほか、CSCでの活動のヒントになるようなアイディアもいくつかいただきました。

その後、LFAのボランティアが活動されている場も見学させていただきました。LFAでは、経済面や学校での問題、家庭の事情などにより学習に困難を抱えている子どもたちに対し、強い課題意識を持った大学生ボランティアが質の高い学習支援を無償で行なっています。この日も多くの子どもたちが大学生の先生たちに丁寧な指導を受けながら真剣に勉強していました。 この場を見学させていただいて何よりも印象的だったのは大学生ボランティアの方々の熱意と高いモチベーションです。そんな言葉では言い表せないほど、彼らの笑顔や子ども一人一人に対する真摯な姿勢に心を打たれました。

彼らの活動は「手が空いた時に気軽にできるボランティア」ではありません。LFAで採用面接を受け、子ども一人一人の性格や学力、好みや苦手なことを把握し、それぞれに合わせた授業の準備をし、週末も長い時間を割いて子どもと真剣に向き合い授業をしています。 私が見学させていただいたのはほんの30分ほどでしたが、そんな大学生の姿を見て子どもたちもそれに応えるように一生懸命勉強に取り組んでいるように見えました。 また、当たり前ですが「支援が必要な子ども」にもいろんな子がいるということ。どんなことに困っていて、どんな状況なのかは人それぞれなのですよね。

見学が終わった後、石神さんは「私たちの活動は現場が全てです」とおっしゃっていました。 その言葉をしっかり心に刻んで、ブルガリアで活動してこようと思います。
