I've been eagerly anticipating Django Wexler's latest book, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying, and it did not disappoint. It lacked his trademark ambivalently aspec protagonists, but it's got plenty else to recommend it. Our protagonist Davi is the Chosen One, summoned by Ancient Magicks from our modern world to save the ancient fantasy kingdom from evil and defeat the Dark Lord... except that, after nigh on a thousand attempts ending in abject failure and agonizing death, she's sick of this shit and ready to try something different.
Her narrative voice is pretty jarring at first, all gratuitous callousness and memelord edge, but it didn't take long to adjust to, and it took on an air of tragedy as it became clear that, after centuries of bashing her head against the same unsolvable problem, these contextless quips and references were basically all she remembered of her "real" life. The overall tone reminded me of nothing so much as Nevernight, with its cheerfully crapsack world, pitch black humor, and frequent tangential asides, but it's execution was far more deft, never straying into the excessive gratuity or clumsy moralizing that Nevernight is sometimes prone to.
Davi is a deeply entertaining protagonist, balancing a fundamental decency with a near complete disconnect from reality after so long spent in her time loop. She's also astonishingly bisexual and unabashedly horny about it - it's always a plus for me when a book captures some of the viscerality of queer desire. Though the book fades to black for any actual sex scenes, her observations after the fact are always a delight. For anyone who's read Ashes of the Sun and remembers the scene where Beq got distracted and started talking about her special interest in the middle of getting fingered... well, you get the gist.
Definitely recommend for any fans of high fantasy subversions, isekai subversions, and traumatic time loop enjoyers (tagging @urban-sith for no particular reason)

Would Wanda & Pietro have been homeschooled by Marya & Django?
Possibly, but I can't really attest to what that would look like. Homeschooling, at least in modern America, still involves, like, textbooks and stuff. Education inequality for Roma is a serious issue, and we know that the Maximoffs were extremely poor, so they probably wouldn't have had access to those resources.
In looking back on Wanda and Pietro's childhood, I'm reminded of Peter David's racist remarks about Romani families, which were made at NYCC '16 in response to a question from Roma activist Vicente Rodriguez, regarding David's work with Romani characters like Quicksilver. David invoked an unfortunately common narrative about Romani culture-- that our children are routinely abused, kept out of schools, forced to work or beg at a young age, and pressured into early marriages. These are social issues that have more to do with poverty, segregation, and discrimination than actual Romani cultural values, but it has been very convenient for a very long time for racists to place the blame on us while obscuring the true history of our systemic oppression. This is a fundamental device of anti-romani rhetoric.
I'm bringing this up because I think a lot of people, whether they realize it or not, have internalized this view of Romani culture. While many traditional communities may seem closed off or insular, I think that the relationship between Roma and outside culture is misunderstood. Families like this don't want to stifle or harm their children, and it's not like we're behind the times-- we have feminism and other social movements. But it's hard for that kind of change and growth to take root in communities that are deeply oppressed, ghettoized, and routinely displaced. This is a documented issue, and you can see the same thing play out across race and poverty lines in America.
So, I feel very strongly that characters like Django and Marya can be used to combat this prevailing, harmful narrative. When we see families like the Maximoffs, I want to really emphasize the fact that these are people who would do everything in their power to protect their children and give them a happy childhood. Same thing goes for the von Dooms, and even Margali when she's at her best. Maybe they didn't have the means to give Wanda and Pietro an education, but I believe that Marya and Django gave them as many opportunities as they could afford to learn, and play, and grow, and I think that's why they grew up to become the intelligent, studious people we know them as today.

Why Learning Python is the Perfect First Step in Coding
Learning Python is an ideal way to dive into programming. Its simplicity and versatility make it the perfect language for beginners, whether you're looking to develop basic skills or eventually dive into fields like data analysis, web development, or machine learning.
Start by focusing on the fundamentals: learn about variables, data types, conditionals, and loops. These core concepts are the building blocks of programming, and Python’s clear syntax makes them easier to grasp. Interactive platforms like Codecademy, Khan Academy, and freeCodeCamp offer structured, step-by-step lessons that are perfect for beginners, so start there.
Once you’ve got a handle on the basics, apply what you’ve learned by building small projects. For example, try coding a simple calculator, a basic guessing game, or even a text-based story generator. These small projects will help you understand how programming concepts work together, giving you confidence and helping you identify areas where you might need a bit more practice.
When you're ready to move beyond the basics, Python offers many powerful libraries that open up new possibilities. Dive into pandas for data analysis, matplotlib for data visualization, or even Django if you want to explore web development. Each library offers a set of tools that helps you do more complex tasks, and learning them will expand your coding skillset significantly.
Keep practicing, and don't hesitate to look at code written by others to see how they approach problems. Coding is a journey, and with every line you write, you’re gaining valuable skills that will pay off in future projects.

I will forever be endlessly fascinated by the way Julius decides to pin everything that happened by the end of the first game entirely on the Boss. Like ignoring the various plot points that were more or less dropped in the sequel, it's kind of amazing how the man seemingly refused to take any accountability for what the Saints had started to turn into during their first iteration. For a man who was the founder and leader of the gang it sure seems like the kid he saved on the street was the real MASTERMIND behind everything.
To paraphrase a post I read that led me to think about this in the first place; people have a tendency to take what Julius said at face value. They just willingly accept the idea that the Boss was just "always like that" and Julius was not only justified in putting them into a coma, but able to see their true colors. But I highly doubt that. I mean, if you pay close enough attention to the first game, there's plenty of material that can lead you to believe that whatever "good intentions" he may have had in forming the Saints to being with was misguided at best and self-serving at worst.
Whatever "valid" reasons he may have had in dropping his flags with the VK's means jack shit as soon as you realize two things during a mission with his former friend/former leader of the VK's Ben King; the first is that Julius lies to everyone's face about coming from the Row, as he originally hailed from the neighborhood of Sunnyvale. The second is that the speech he gives towards the Saints is a direct copy of one Ben had given. Julius wants the same kind of power his best friend had. He wants the recognition, the respect, and everything that comes with running the biggest and baddest gang in the city.
With my specific portrayal of the Boss I've always said that before joining the Saints there was just something fundamentally wrong with him. Something that had been brewing for years and was finally able to be released by the time he wound up in the gang, acting as a sort of catalyst. Does this mean Julius was right all along? Maybe to an extent. But in no way can I say he was justified entirely. Because for a man who seemingly regrets the way things turned out, he sure as hell seemed pretty fine with everything the gang had done prior to his arrest. I mean shit, even the death of one of his lieutenants was met with a "she knew the risks of this life".
And it's not only that, but I can only imagine that the fallout from disbanding the Saints was pretty fucking bad. People getting arrested, murdered, and who the hell knows what else. Not to mention the large power vacuum that was ultimately filled up by three new gangs during those five years. Everything had basically gone to shit just so Julius could save his own ass.
Which brings me back to the Boss. Or I suppose Django to be specific. Make no mistake, I don't excuse anything he or the gang does. For all the ways in which I make him likeable there is no changing the fact that he is a villain protagonist through and through. But that's not going to prevent me from talking about frankly ridiculous it is that Julius could have the audacity to blame everything on him. That he could so easily try and assassinate his golden boy via explosives all because he saw him as both an ultimate evil and expendable.
I'm sure the man's had moments where he questions what he's done. Where he wonders if he made the right choice. And I know for sure that at least in my interpretation of the series and what I consider canon on here, Julius will convince himself time and time again that he was correct. That it had to be done. That the kid needed to go. It's fine. He's fine. It's all over now. There will come a day where the ghosts of his past will stop haunting him, and he can finally get that peaceful night of sleep he's desired for so long now.
Unfortunately for him some spirits are just that restless.

Marion Walter Jacobs (May 1, 1930 – February 15, 1968), known as Little Walter, was a blues musician, singer, and songwriter, whose revolutionary approach to the harmonica and impact on succeeding generations has earned him comparisons to such seminal artists as Django Reinhardt, Charlie Parker, and Jimi Hendrix. His virtuosity and musical innovations fundamentally altered many listeners’ expectations of what was possible on blues harmonica. He was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the first artist and to date, the only one to be inducted specifically as a harmonica player.
He found work as a guitarist but garnered more attention for his already highly developed harmonica playing. According to Chicago bluesman Floyd Jones, his first recording was an unreleased demo recorded soon after he arrived in Chicago, on which he played guitar backing Jones. He, reportedly frustrated with having his harmonica drowned out by electric guitars, adopted a simple but previously little-used method: He cupped a small microphone in his hands along with his harmonica and plugged the microphone into a public address system or guitar amplifier. He could compete with any guitarist’s volume. Unlike other contemporary blues harp players, such as Sonny Boy Williamson I and Snooky Pryor, who like many other harmonica players had also begun using the newly available amplifier technology around the same time solely for added volume, he purposely pushed his amplifiers beyond their intended technical limitations, using the amplification to explore and develop radical new timbres and sonic effects previously unheard from a harmonica or any other instrument. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Do you have any thoughts on “the scarlet witch” title as both a legacy title and one with an unrelated origin? Just asking for your headcanon if you have one you’d like to share, bc I don’t think it’s anything worth clarifying in canon. (Unless there is something that I’ve missed)
To clarify, I mean Wanda choosing the title (or being called that by the villagers) unaware she came from a line of scarlet witches. It could be as simple as magic giving her the name. Or her established traumatic memory loss keeping her from remembering Django telling her about Natalya when she was young but holding onto pieces of it out of context, just like she couldn’t always remember Django and Marya. The villagers using the name as a pejorative is really interesting imo, I feel like it almost implies that previous SWs may have been known to them and been turned into folk boogeymen through prejudiced misrepresentation
In Wanda's very first appearance, in X-Men (1963) #4, we see a flashback to Magneto saving the twins from the mob, and one of the villagers explicitly calls Wanda "a scarlet witch." The reader is left to infer that Wanda-- who, at this point, isn't an actual witch-- simply takes the name as an act of reclamation, but the text doesn't linger on it. Despite how often this scene is revisited, Wanda never explicitly acknowledges that this is how she got her name, and some retellings omit that line completely.
In Scarlet Witch (2016) #4, when Wanda learns about her family's legacy, she comments that the name "Scarlet Witch" came into her head when her powers first manifested. From this, we are meant to infer that the name is part of Wanda's magical/ancestral memory. It's a part of the retcon, and it does fundamentally change her relationship to the name. I'm sure that's frustrating for some readers, but in my opinion, because it's not something that was ever emphasized from Wanda's perspective, I don't think it's a terrible loss for the character.
Throughout the series, Robinson describes the prejudice and rejection that Natalya experienced as the Scarlet Witch, and elaborates on the supposed meaning of the color scarlet as a symbol of bad luck. The latter is completely false, and you shouldn't take it as an accurate representation of Romani culture. I'm only bringing it up because I think these details do preserve the overall notion that Wanda might see the name and image of the "Scarlet Witch" as something dangerous and provocative that is empowering for her to reclaim.
Having said all that-- I really like the idea that the villager in that mob called her "a scarlet witch" because that name was known in the region, and presumably associate with Romani women. Obviously, this narrative can get really dicey, but I do think it's an effective way to emphasize that the hate and rejection Wanda and Pietro face isn't just superstition or mutantphobia, it's racism. As retcons go, it would certainly be more elegant than messing around with Wanda's memory again.
