2024 MOVIE LIST
www.tumblr.com/theharpermovieblog
I watched Doom Asylum (1987)
There are always more bad movies to watch and I'm finally getting around to "Doom Asylum".
A group of young people hang out at an abandoned asylum, which is unfortunately inhabited by a disfigured killer.
I don't write about 90% of the bad horror movies I watch. Most of them are too bad, or even if they're 'so bad they're good', I still don't end up with much to say about them. However, "Doom Asylum" is a special bad horror movie. One which I couldn't keep quiet about.
You see, "Doom Asylum is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and yet it's one of the most entertaining I've watched in a long time.
This movie is technically a comedy/horror, in that many jokes were written into the script and the film definitely wants to be seen as a self aware send up of typical horror films. It Succeeds slightly, but all the written "jokes", "clever" dialogue and one liners don't land. You'll laugh, but mostly because the acting is so bad, the line delivery is so stilted, and because the jokes are often so cringe inducing and awkward at points. Of course, given the benefit of the doubt, this could all be somewhat intentional on the filmmakers part, but...it doesn't end there. The directing is horrible, the special effects are jokey and cheap, the film takes place completely in daylight (for obvious budgetary reasons), the story makes no sense...and so on and so on. The film was intended as a joke on some level, but the real joke turns out to be the lack of quality. This is the gift that keeps on giving, if you consider terrible filmmaking to be the gift I do.
A 'So Bad It's Good' movie is a real treat, but when one is this bad it transcends the rest. "Doom Asylum" could be used in a film class to teach about bad films and our strange obsession with this particular genre of failure.
It could also be used to show the difference between B-Horror and 'So Bad It's Good' filmmaking, which people often confuse as one in the same. Like how some people think a film like "Evil Dead 2" is a 'So Bad It's Good' but in reality it is a solidly well made B-Horror, with talent and intention behind it. "Evil Dead 2" "Return Of The Living Dead" "Re-Animator", these films accomplish what they set out to do, and are a bevy of original and clever filmmaking. A movie like "Doom Asylum" however is made poorly, without clever filmmaking, without original ideas, without a talented cast or crew...yet it manages to overcome all those flaws by ineptly stumbling it's way into being entertaining. And, that has value.

something about rhaenyra and alicent being each other's most cherished wound.
bristling when someone else tries to share in their hate and misery for each other, because "she is my pain and mine alone. no one has cut this deep and drawn this much blood as we have done for each other. no one but us will ever truly understand it. only the both of us have a right to the despair we cause each other."
whether their hands intertwine to touch the flowers that grow under a weirwood tree or the cool metal of a blade drenched in blood, they echo: "i will live in you in any way i can. if i cannot be the one you love the most, i will be the one you hate the most."
(but isn't that almost, if not, the same thing?)

It’s extremely troubling and depressing when I look at the comments on any internet post that even vaguely alludes to global south migration to a predominantly-white country and the overall consensus of commenters is essentially “I don’t care if these people are refugees or asylum-seekers… I’d prefer they had died en masse than have come to my country”. Nationalism is dangerously being put above the value of human life for human life’s sake (again) and I find it hard to believe I’m living in the year 2024 living among such backwards tribalism.
