#Dora Davies
Text
Sitting on a chair in the waiting room, Dora allowed her mind to come up with new scenarios. She scanned the room looking for oddities and peculiarities, something out of the ordinary that others wouldn’t catch. Her ticket from the office was scrunched in her hand and unfortunately, ordinary. It wasn’t that she disliked the norm. Heck, the norm was often favourable.
But it’s not funny.
Dora had aspired to be a comedian since she could imagine, always trying to find the weird take on life and notice the little things nobody else did. The way that laws exist without any sensible reason to, and maybe some of the hypocrisies laden within. All spun together with loose interlocking plots about life or music or something like that. Something different. Something unexpected. The sudden “WHAM!” that hits like a train going miles per hour into a big city where everything you once knew disappears within an instant. With that, Dora Middleton had died.
Well, no. Of course Dora Middleton hadn’t died! She had just evolved. Except not really, because that takes millions of years and Dora isn’t more advanced than the average human person. But that’s semantics, and they’re usually fun to poke at. So Dora Middleton took out her phone and tapped away the humour in the everyday unusualness and for a while, became her alter ego. (That was the closest she could get to making a stage name sound cool).
Dora Davies.
It’s snappy. Alliterative. There’s like 3 other comedians with a similar naming style of “4-letter-first-name Davies”, one of which uses a stage name. But then again, they were all dudes. And unalliterative. So who gives a damn?
Execs. Those other comedians are much more famous than her.
Not for long though, as her name - her real name, Middleton, not her cool name - was announced over the tannoy system and she entered the door to see her agent for the very first time.

Paul Irving and Green Gables twins:
"I hope Davy won’t be there when I go because he makes faces at me. I don’t mind very much because he is such a little boy and I am quite a big one, but still it is not pleasant to have faces made at you. And Davy makes such terrible ones. Sometimes I am frightened he will never get his face straightened out again. He makes them at me in church when I ought to be thinking of sacred things. Dora likes me though, and I like her, but not so well as I did before she told Minnie May Barry that she meant to marry me when I grew up. I may marry somebody when I grow up but I’m far too young to be thinking of it yet, don’t you think, teacher?”
Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery
Awww, Dora being friends with Diana's little sister! Dora having a crush on Paul! That's too cute!

Marilla: I trust the twins. If they say they didn’t do it, then they didn’t do it.
Marilla, five minutes later: Alright, which one of you did it?

Hello Anne family,
I’m writing another Anne Of Green Gables fan fiction and i would like your input on my story idea.
It’s about Dora Keith. I always felt like she got left out in the Anne books. It’s about from her mother passing away up until she arrives at Green Gables and her name chapter in life at Green Gables. I want her to spend time with Anne and even Gilbert.
My friend suggested I try and write a short maybe 5 chapter story of Dora Keith. One of the titles she suggested could be The Day I Met Anne. Another story title I came up with was Dora Of Green Gables.
What are your guys thoughts on that idea? I have the first chapter written up on my phone so already.
Thank you!

This reminds me a lot of Black Panther, though they have little similarities other than the skin-color of the characters. Oh yes, the Dora Milaje is inspired by the Agoje.
The Woman King is a 2022 American historical epic film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens. It stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and John Boyega.

Best of 2022 Movies #11: The Woman King
Viola Davis can wow and amaze with certain regularity.
From the subtle perspective of Analeese from HTGAWM to the power broker in Amanda Waller, or even Denzel’s other half in Fences there is a charm to what she knows how to make big.
Such as her take of a general of a female army for a west African kingdom in the 19th century.

The strength that Nanisca brings is something to be admired.
Even with support from Lashana Lynch and Jon Boyega Viola owned this completely.
I can definitely see an EGOT coming her way.
SUM 22: Viola Davis gives Okoye a run for her money as the real inspiration for the Dora Milaje bring it in this ride.

My Policeman

Silent Night (15): Death Actually.
#onemannsmovies review of "Silent Night" (2021). #SilentNightMovie. A very dark Christmas comedy/drama that is best served cold. 3/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Silent Night” (2021). I missed “Silent Night” when it was released in December last year. But with the season approaching again, what better way to get in the mood that with a joyous and uplifting festive feel good flick?  Erm…. Perhaps not. For “Silent Night”, whilst a real oddity, is very very dark! This was the last of my “catch up” films from my Antipodean…

New review of my translation of Peter Huchel's 'These Numbered Days'
When Shearsman Books published my translations from the German of Peter Huchel’s 1972 collection These Numbered Days (Gezählte Tage), we were still in the early days of Covid restrictions and so launch events and so on were very difficult. I was pleased when the book was recognised in 2020 by winning the Schlegel-Tieck Prize for translation from German awarded by the Society of Authors. The…
