Religious Studies Term Of The Day: Daaj

Today I thought I’d share a term that is interesting in modern Sikh studies: Daaj. This is the Punjabi word for “dowry,” the gift the wife’s family is expected to give to the groom’s family in exchange for the marriage. It’s a gift that secure’s a woman’s place in her new home and maintains the honor of her family. However, it is a bit controversial, not only just in a new modern culture that seems to see dowry as an outdated concept of property exchange in marriage. It’s also controversial because of the massive debts people have been willing to get into to ensure their daughters marry rich men, but also because the Sikh Code of Conduct itself actually prohibits dowry practices and yet many Sikhs do it anyway. I’m really interested to see how Sikhi develops with all of this in mind, whether new texts will emerge to allow for dowry practices or whether the faith will change to renounce dowries in common practice. But again, I’m an outsider and I don’t know as much as I’d like, so I’m always willing to hear other perspectives on this subject from those more familiar with it.
