Welcome back to today's* documentation of "how Doyin Richards continues to advocate and post apologetics for child abuse in his paid job as a child-advice columnist with Slate."
In his November 22, 2022 column, a reader writes into Care & Feeding with a genuine, serious problem: They have discovered their daughter (age unstated) is writing and sending out chain messages using her phone, the kind that threaten "send this to X number of people or you will die." These messages are apparently a sufficiently serious problem in her school that the school has been sending home letters about it.
And how does Doyin respond? He tells the parent that obviously the solution is to confiscate the kid's phone, whines that people like me think he's being too harsh, says some horribly abusive shit, and then says, "chain messages are dumb" and that the parent should make sure the child stops b/c "sending messages that threaten murder aren’t remotely funny" and it could "could potentially get her in trouble at school."
There is, as always, a lot to unpack here, but let's start with the most important bit" his horribly abusive shit. He says, "I know that some parents will think my position is harsh, but I tell my kids that nothing belongs to them. Their tablets, phones, laptops, etc. are my property because I’m the adult in the room who bought them."
I struggle to explain how horrifying these sentences are, because I cannot believe it is not self-evident. I cannot believe someone not only typed them out, but an editor reviewed them and a magazine published them.
A child is a person, not a toy or an extension of their parents. They have a right to privacy and an independent identity. As part of that, they have a right to have things that belong to them, that they have control over, and a right to privacy in those things. Furthermore, Doyin (or any parent) is "the adult in the room who bought them," BECAUSE he is the adult, because a child cannot and should not be responsible for buying things for themselves. A child does not have the choice to be independent, and parents have an OBLIGATION to provide for the needs, including the material needs, of their children.
Second, there is no need for Doyin's whining about how everyone is so mean to him but he's such a great dad. There is a place for describing personal experience in giving advice, but his self-centeredness goes far beyond that.
Third, there is absolutely no consideration for why the child is writing and sending these messages in his advice. And honestly, that alone should be disqualifying! Because these messages are a problem, they are harmful to others, and the child doesn't appear to see that. Either the parent is failing to communicate the harm, or the child is failing to understand the harm, or the child sees the benefit of sending the messages worth the risk of harm (or some combination). Is the child experiencing some kind of peer pressure/peer normalization around sending these messages? Do they not understand or care that others will be disturbed by them and genuinely think they are funny? Do they *want* to hurt other kids by sending them out? These are important questions, but Doyin doesn't even allude to attempting to figure them out, much less address them, b/c Doyin Richards doesn't think children have inner lives b/c Doyin Richards thinks children aren't people.
And this leads to the fourth problem with his advice: confiscating the phone (probably) isn't even a real solution here! In a modern setting, the child, unless kept under extremely serious lock-and-key, is still going to have access to, at a minimum, email. They could still engage in this kind of chain-letters through print, even! If this is a peer-group problem, they will still be within the same peer-group environment w/o any effective pushback from the parents (b/c Doyin doesn't actually give them any tools or advice to do so).
His abusive advice wouldn't be justified if it actually worked, but the fact that it fails to even address the problems the letter raises strips bare the facade that his "advice" is even an honest attempt at productive guidance. By continuing to give him a platform, Slate is providing him a megaphone to promote abuse, and nothing more.
