my beloved pittfic authors,
i regret to inform you that in the state of pennsylvania you cannot buy a six pack at the gas station. You cannot buy wine at the grocery store.
pa has weird liquor laws and i won't get into why in this post but just know that buying alcohol is annoying.
if you want to buy beer in pa, you go to a "beer distributor" which is not a store technically, it requires a special license to operate and it's more like a warehouse or wholesale situation. always run by a weird guy. sometimes you can drive into the warehouse to load up your car with beer.

it will look something like this. even in the city. you can probably get a keg and also cigars there.

this is also where you can buy hard seltzers or canned cocktails.
IN SOME PLACES: you can buy a six pack at the grocery store. but! you have to check out in a different lane from the rest of your groceries.
for wine and liquor you need to go to the State Store. Fine Wine and Good Spirits is run by the state. They have a mediocre selection usually and can in theory order anything but they are very bad at it in my experience (as a person who really likes a specific brand of weird french gin). you can usually also get standard mixers here, tonic, margarita mix etc.
State Stores are not open on sundays, and usually close around 9pm, hence the need for premeditated alcohol purchasing.

in philly we often drive to jersey to get cheaper booze and a better selection. i assume pittsburgh folks also cross the border or ohio or wv but it's further than it is for us.
okay here we go. now you know. please i do not want to see another character by a six pack at the gas station on the way home sorry.

the thing about langdon is that i understand him. and that's what makes the portrayal of his addiction so raw and scary and new. this is a guy who needs to run a mile per minute: for his job, for his family, for himself. so, when an injury stops that from happening, maybe leaving him with chronic pain that requires indefinite management, it's understandable that he would try anything to make it stop.
and maybe the running and ice baths and adrenaline-seeking were already ways for him to cope with the pressures put upon him; the expectations to be a good student, doctor, husband, and father during an unprecedented pandemic were probably crushing him.
and when you take away the ability to have healthy coping mechanisms, the unhealthy ones creep their way in.
the thing that's scary about langdon is that i can see how i could've been like him. as a former competitive dancer who got overlapping severe injuries that caused me to quit something that i thought would be my career, i'm still dealing with the ramifications. i am living with chronic pain, it interferes with my acting, with my life. there was a time where i would've done anything to have it stop. and thankfully it didn't get to the point of substance use, but there was a very real risk. and there still is.
it's so refreshing to see an addict portrayed in a way that doesn't condone his actions, but treats him with empathy. it's a disease, there are so many things that may cause someone to go down that path. and it's obvious in the way patrick speaks about it that it's important to him to approach everything with empathy first and foremost.
basically i just have so much love for langdon as a character, and for patrick in his portrayal of him. and i cannot wait to see him in early recovery in s2, and to see him navigate everything that comes with it!
#sorry for oversharing on tumblr.com#but what else is new#i've been thinking about this so much lately#and saw a clip of an interview where pball was talking about approaching langdon's recovery in s2#needed to get this out of my system#frank langdon#the pitt#the pitt hbo#patrick ball#pitt posting#kingdon#dr. langdon

Frank at Work

Dr. Frank Langdon x Male!Reader
No use of Y/N
Whenever your husband, Frank, went to work there was a solid chance that he would go, and forget half of the things he needs. Wedding ring? 50/50. Protein bars? No chance. Wallet? Maybe. Packed lunch that was nutrient dense and would give him the amount of energy he would need for his shift, had an extra redbull because lord knows he needs it, and had a hand written to cheer him up after a hard case? Sometimes. Today, he forgot all four, so you could not avoid the often inevitable side trip to the hospital before you made it to your own job.
As the front desk waved you in, used to your at least every other morning routine by now, you took a deep breath, getting ready to be sucked into the chaos of the pitt. The second you entered, you heard a lady screaming in pain as she was wheeled into a room, your dear husband following behind.
Knowing you wouldn't be seeing him until she was all sorted out, you headed over to the nurses station, spotting Perlah furiously typing in what Princess was relaying to her. Once the pair finished, their heads snapped up to you, smiles breaking out on their faces as the greatest opportunity to tease Dr. Langdon had arised on yet another morning shift. Looking around, and noting that the chaos died down, Princess ran off to summon your husband.
"Man of the hour!" Robby called, patting you on the back smiling as a large blush spread over Frank's face as he made his way over to you.
"So, today I have your wedding ring," you pulled his left hand toward you and put it on his finger just as you had when you married him, "Your protein bars, your wallet, and the handmade lunch that I so kindly made for you"
Frank took everything you gave him with a shy smile, before pulling you into a hug, and muttering "I love you, baby" into your ear, trying to hide his words in your hair.
Robby's clearly smirking voice came from behind you, "And this is Mr. Langdon. Dr. Landon's husband. You'll see him here every few mornings to bring in whatever Frankie here forgot, and he brings in cookies after mass casualties"
You turned away to greet whomever was being introduced to you, "I also have breakfast sandwiches for staff this morning, but there might not be enough, since someone didn't tell me the interns were starting today"
Frank jolted out of the side eye he was giving his work husband, caught off guard, "I-"
"Well, it's nice to meet you, but I too have work, so I've got to get going. Behave yourselves, save some lives, yeah?"
Murmurs of agreement came from around you as you said goodbye to those who knew you as a frequent visitor, and as everyone got swept away by yet another emergency, you managed to sneak one more kiss onto Frank's cheek.
"Bye love"
"Bye, see you tonight"

Headcanon
Dana has a stash of protein bars, some of everyone's favorites, that she buys in bulk at costco. Mel likes the all-natural macrobiotically balanced bars, which Frank says taste like cardboard. Robby likes Larabars, because for some reason that man fucking loves dates. Whittaker liked the quaker oats chewy granola bars, until Dana got him going on peanut butter and chocolate Kind bars that had a little more nutritional value. She doles them out quietly, slipping them into pockets, or sometimes loudly when she needs to make an example of someone. Being handed a protein bar by Dana can mean "I see you struggling and I'm here for you", but it can also mean "You're coming on way too strong right now, take a fucking break and come back with a better attitude."

i think one thing the pitt viewers need to keep in mind is even if langdon isn’t actively taking meds at work and is truly on NSAIDs during his shifts, diverting meds! is still! SO ILLEGAL!
like stealing meds, especially controlled substances, is so so bad. at least as a nurse it’s a felony and causes you to lose your license. so like, taking them or not, he still stole them.
so yes, even we can take him at his word and presume he’s never shown up to a shift high (unlikely, but… sure.) he still did/is doing a bad thing that has severe consequences.
#bye king glad to know you#i hope he gets the help he needs#there are programs for this kind of thing it really is a huge issue#the pitt#dr. langdon#frank langdon#but still a huge no no#the santos stuff is almost irrevelant#her motivations don’t really matter when he’s been caught red handed and her intuition was correct#the pitt spoilers

listen, all i'm saying is that maybe if a man has to plead with his wife to let him talk to his son on the phone at 3:00 in the afternoon, that might be a relationship that already has a few (a lot of) cracks in it.
so maybe it's not so inconceivable that when someone who is open about her feelings, and competent, and respects him and his work, shows up on the hardest day of his life, he might be inclined to fall a little bit in love with her.
and maybe she might fall a little bit in love with him too.

Holding you tight, day and night

Dr. Frank Langdon x Chronic Pain(non-specific) Reader
Written + Headcannons
Dating with a disability is always complicated, no matter who you're dating. At first, you didn't want to tell Frank, not wanting to force him into taking care of you on top of being a doctor. Growing up, you knew one day you might need a caretaker, but you never wanted to guilt someone into being that for you.
But that did mean that you had to deal with your pain alone. Whenever Frank went to work, you would have to drag your work laptop to the bed, fluffing pillows to support your knees and back, and pulling out a bin of snacks and water bottles so that you wouldn't need to get up.
But this was never fool proof, you had to go to the bathroom, sometimes you had to go into the office, and sometimes you would fall asleep, barely giving you enough time to put your setup away before Frank got home
Inveitably, he does come home one day to find you asleep in bed, curled up, with tears slowly streaming out of your eyes, laptop discarded on his side of the bed.
When you're shaken awake, his worried eyes are all it takes for you to realize the situation he's found you in, "Frank?"
"Hey, baby, what's wrong? Are you ok?" He sits down on your side of the bed, holding one of your legs to look for injury or inflammation, brows furrowed and mind on total doctor mode. "What happened baby, why are you in pain? Did you get hurt? Why didn't you call me?"
"It's um, It's nothing unusual, just chronic pain" you mumble, unable to look at his eyes as he slowly puts your leg down and brings his hand to your face, pulling you to meet his eyes.
"What? Baby, why didn't you tell me that? Do you have a diagnosis?"
As you told Frank about your medical history, he completely transformed your bed and bedside set up, re-fluffing your joint support pillows, refilling your snacks and drinks, bringing the aleve, and your prescribed pain meds to your side. He brings out a heating and cooling pad set that you didn't even know you had, and set it on the hips you'd been sitting on all day and your most painful jointa. You'd really think you were in the hospital if it weren't for the comfortable bed and the Spiderman pj's he'd replaced his scrubs with.
"You comfortable, darling? All joints ok, pain is better?"
"Yes, thank you, Frank. I'm sorry I didn't te-"
"No, Y/N. I get why you didn't want to tell me, that's ok. I'm just glad I know now, and now it's time for me to take care of you."
For the rest of the night he didn't let you move a muscle, pulling out cooking skills you'd never known he had, and ordering some cake to be delivered, before hand feeding it to you in bed. He pressed kisses into your shoulder while watching any show or movie you'd like, only concerned about what you want. He spends the night curled around you, massaging painful body parts and insisting that you two talk about your disability further.
Going forward, Frank makes sure that every person coming into the ED that has your condition, he treats. He wants as much exposure as possible so that if you ever come into any situation, he knows how to handle it. He contacts the hospital's pain management team for you to get regular check ups, and goes with you whenever he can. If doctors ever doubt you or give you shit for it, he'll call them out and storm out with you in his arms. He'll try to make progress on any flare-ups, and he makes sure that he can be with you every step of the way.
Eventually, between all your doctors appointments, you get prescribed Benzos.
The second he hears what you were prescribed, every part of him freezes, and the intrusive thoughts come in.
It would be so easy to take
You might not even notice
He needs wants it more than you
He instantly feels terrible for thinking those things, and it takes everything for him to not steal from you. But it's not enough to stop him from using entirely
When Robby finds out, he instantly calls you and tells you to count how many you have left and how many you've taken. He's relieved that Frank hasn't taken any from you but worries about him coming home to his only source left of Benzos.
When Frank comes home that night, the second he sees you, he knows you know. You're sat on the couch, news of PittFest playing on the TV, but you're not paying attention. You're fiddling with your bottle of Benzos, deep in thought, but your head snaps up when you hear the door.
"Baby-" you start, but you're cut off by Frank's sobs
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I never took any from you, I never meant to hurt you, I- just" he took a deep breath, unable to meet you eyes, filled with worry "When I hurt my back, you know how Hamden prescribed me Benzos, and I guess I didn't realize how dependant I got on it in the moment, but all of a sudden I was taking more from the hospital, but I never took any from you, I swear, I swear baby, I'm sorry, I'll move out, you don't need to worry, I'll-"
He's cut off by an oomf as you pull him to your chest, fingers running through his hair, pressing kisses into his head. "It's alright. You don't need to move out." Before he could protest you pulled him to your side, making him look at your laptop, "I set up an appointment at the local rehab clinic that Robby recommended, they understand you're a doctor and will make sure you keep your lisense. It's an inpatient facility, but I'll visit as much as I can." Looking back at him, you can't help but smile, "I still love you, Frank." His shoulders relax, finally believing that he hadn't made that fatal mistake that would push you away. "Even if you're struggling with addiction, even if for now, I can't really trust you completely. I still love you."
Frank turned and sobbed into your chest, crying out that he loved you, and how sorry he was. All you could do was remind him that no matter what, you would still love him.
Headcannons!
You become well loved in the hospital
They'll always sneak you the good sandwiches, and soft blankets if you ever end up there
Santos also likes you visiting because she likes showing off her knowledge of chronic pain
To the point where it's a running joke in the pitt that she's trying to steal you from Frank
It only makes him 'dislike' her more
You treat her more like Frank's work daughter
Whenever he's struggling with withdrawal symptoms, you treat him how he treats you during flare ups
Cuddles in bed, spoon feeding food
You guys both take care of eachother forever
You also back him up in the hospital if Santos or Robby ever doubts him
Even if they have some reasons
You'll be at his side instantly
If not to defend him, to comfort him
Whenever your pain isn't too bad, you'll bring in food for the whole shift
Things they can eat quickly
And make sure that Frank has enough Redbull to make it through the day
A caffeine addiction is better than a Benzos addiction ig

“a lot of really good people struggle with addiction” - DR. ROBBY. doctor robby says that in episode 11.
addicts are not inherently evil because of their addiction. they are not bad people. stop talking about addicts as if they are the worst of mankind. they are people. they deserve empathy. please remember that when you talk about frank or anybody who has an addiction or is recovering.
