Friendly reminder that Wix.com is an Israeli-based company (& some website builders to look into instead)
I know the BDS movement is not targeting Wix.com specifically (see here for the companies they're currently boycotting) but since Wix originated in Israel as early as 2006, it would be best to drop them as soon as you can.
And while you're at it, you should leave DeviantArt too, since that company is owned by Wix. I deleted my DA account about a year ago not just because of their generative AI debacle but also because of their affiliation with their parent company. And just last month, DA has since shown their SUPPORT for Israel in the middle of Israel actively genociding the Palestinian people 😬
Anyway, I used to use Wix and I stopped using it around the same time that I left DA, but I never closed my Wix account until now. What WAS nice about Wix was how easy it was to build a site with nothing but a drag-and-drop system without any need to code.
So if you're using Wix for your portfolio, your school projects, or for anything else, then where can you go?
Here are some recommendations that you can look into for website builders that you can start for FREE and are NOT tied to a big, corporate entity (below the cut) 👇👇
Carrd.co
This is what I used to build my link hub and my portfolio, so I have the most experience with this platform.
It's highly customizable with a drag-and-drop arrangement system, but it's not as open-ended as Wix. Still though, it's easy to grasp & set up without requiring any coding knowledge. The most "coding" you may ever have to deal with is markdown formatting (carrd provides an on-screen cheatsheet whenever you're editing text!) and section breaks (which is used to define headers, footers, individual pages, sections of a page, etc.) which are EXTREMELY useful.
There's limits to using this site builder for free (max of 2 websites & a max of 100 elements per site), but even then you can get a lot of mileage out of carrd.
mmm.page
This is a VERY funny & charming website builder. The drag-and-drop system is just as open-ended as Wix, but it encourages you to get messy. Hell, you can make it just as messy as the early internet days, except the way you can arrange elements & images allows for more room for creativity.
Straw.page
This is an extremely simple website builder that you can start from scratch, except it's made to be accessible from your phone. As such, the controls are limited and intentionally simple, but I can see this being a decent website builder to start with if all you have is your phone. The other options above are also accessible from your phone, but this one is by far one of the the simplest website builders available.
Hotglue.me
This is also a very simple & rudimentary website builder that allows you to make a webpage from scratch, except it's not as easy to use on a mobile phone.
At a glance, its features are not as robust or easy to pick up like the previous options, but you can still create objects with a simple double click and drag them around, add text, and insert images or embeds.
Mind you, this launched in the 2010s and has likely stayed that way ever since, which means that it may not have support for mobile phone displays, so whether or not you wanna try your hand at building something on there is completely up to you!
Sadgrl's Layout Editor
sadgrl.online is where I gathered most of these no-code site builders! I highly recommend looking through the webmaster links for more website-building info.
This simple site builder is for use on Neocities, which is a website hosting service that you can start using for free. This is the closest thing to building a site that resembles the early internet days, but the sites you can make are also responsive to mobile devices! This can be a good place to start if this kind of thing is your jam and you have little to no coding experience.
Although I will say, even if it sounds daunting at first, learning how to code in HTML and CSS is one of the most liberating experiences that anyone can have, even if you don't come from a website scripting background. It's like cooking a meal for yourself. So if you want to take that route, then I encourage to you at least try it!
Most of these website builders I reviewed were largely done at a glance, so I'm certainly missing out on how deep they can go.
Oh, and of course as always, Free Palestine 🇵🇸

anyways if any of you WANT a different social media to go to if/when tumblr blows up then i would highly recommend you pillowfort for the closest experience to tumblr (with some differences of course it IS its own thing) and tentatively recommend you bluesky (which has its own problems but it's not unusable like twitter is) for the closest experience to twitter. dreamwidth is good if you like long-form writing and not a lot of action (so it may not be as popular with younger folk) and is probably the most immortal and rock-solid site out there right now. of course there's making your own website (with hosting services like neocities, nekoweb, and more) and getting involved in that circle (which is where you'll find links to lots of different forums if forums are your thing) if you're interested in that, but if you don't want to/can't learn html/css (and don't want to use website layouts made by others, of which there are a LOT) then some drag-and-drop website builders that aren't wix include straw.page and mmm.page. this isn't meant to sound overwhelming but rather just give you options if you want them! but whatever you do. for the love of god. i cannot stress this enough. do NOT touch cohost with a ten-foot pole

Every so often I find myself tempted by Straw.Page's oekaki widget but I always give up trying to make my own page because the """easy""" """""convenient""""" drag & drop website builder confounds me to no end. Please just let me use HTML/CSS I'm begging you.

Hi! I'm looking to make a digital art portfolio, what do you use for your website?
im using squarespace which i honestly probably wouldnt recommend using any drag and drop/wat you see is what you get style web builders at all unless you really need things like the blogs/shop, or you really really have a hard time with coding,
just because its a pain in ass to deal with for me at least (i like a lot of creative control and these website builders force you into their templates so i end up fighting with the template code a lot with my custom code 😭)
Squarespace IS really popular though so there's a lot of tutorials and help for it which is nice.
If you just need a plain site with links and a simple gallery in it id build it in HTML and use something like neocities or github pages to host it tbh but that WILL require learning a little html and CSS to make it look nice.

Entry 8: Snowball Instigator
1/15/25
The past few days have consisted of two things: one, settling on a website host/builder and a domain – and thus also my penname! – and experimenting with that; and two, in general leaning into that momentum and making several other important choices.
While there’s still a lot to be done and decided, I feel good about the progress made. As of right now and barring any surprises, these are the things I’ve decided:
Initial publishing platforms and formats
Book dimensions
Map artist
Crowdfunding platform and tip-gathering platform
Penname and thus website domain name
Newsletter / mailing list service
(Though not quite a ‘decision’ per se) Initial social media platforms
Next on the docket while I wait for a friend’s graphic design portfolio are determining what ARC service I’d like to use, narrowing down what rewards/perks/merch I want to offer and in what circumstances and thus what fulfillment service(s) I want to use, and most of all – my cover illustrator/designer.
The ‘next up’ items notwithstanding, I’d been hemming and hawing over a lot of these decisions. Their interconnectedness made it difficult and to an extent, still does. However, the good news is that once you just go ahead and make a decision on one of them, it’s freeing, and makes it a bit easier to go ahead and make others. The good news is that a lot of services/platforms nowadays make it relatively easy to change your mind and migrate elsewhere if you really fuck up.
In general I’ve been reflecting that we have so many more tools at our disposal than we did ten, twenty years ago. I remember being rather young and wanting a website of my own (back when the internet was starting to become something bigger), and my dad teaching me the basics of HTML. Nowadays there’s things like drag-and-drop! How novel! Much wow. So truly, as daunted as I’ve felt with all the things I have to decide and try out and set up, it’s not so bad. If you have even a mouse’s share of common sense you can generally find your way, and like I said, if you change your mind or something goes awry, there’s rarely a situation where it’s devastating and irreparable.
Anyway, several of the things I mentioned I’m not quite ready to share yet, but there are at least two things for now: come find me on Bluesky*, and as you may have guessed, I’ve landed on Tamara S. Harker for my penname for my fantasy books! Thank you to everyone who’s voted in the poll I sent. <3 * Bluesky won't be my only social media platform, so only find me there if you'd like to!
+++++ Baroness' Self-Publication Journal Masterpost I'm journaling what I uncover as I do more research for self-publication of my novel! I'll be using the tag "#sp journal". All of this will eventually wind up as part of a larger, more detailed guide for which I'm making notes.

Ill be ready soon to start testing the webrtc signaling protocol I've built. In addition all of the code for the site builder backend is now bundled properly so that Pyodide can load the python/html/css/js necessary using one zip, next steps will be testing the backend in the browser and building a gui, though I don't want to undersell that the gui is going to be a significant task because I am going to do it with built in browser apis like drag and drop so that the codebase for the browser continues to be very slim (outside of the large wasm files needed for Pyodide)

Best Offline Website Builder Software: Building Websites without Internet
In today's world, having an online presence is vital for businesses and individuals alike. Whether you’re a small business owner, a freelancer, or someone looking to showcase your portfolio, having a website is no longer a luxury—it's a necessity. While plenty of online website builders are available, such as Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress, not everyone has access to a stable internet connection. This is where offline website builders come in handy.
Offline website builder software allows you to create, edit, and design websites without being connected to the internet. Once your design is complete, you can publish it online when you’re ready. These tools are excellent for those who prefer to work on their websites offline, whether due to limited internet access or personal preference. In this article, we'll explore some of the best offline website builder software available, and their features, pros, and cons.
Why Choose Offline Website Builders?
Before diving into the best offline website builders, let’s first discuss why you might want to use an offline builder over an online one. There are several reasons why someone might prefer to work offline:
No Need for Constant Internet Access: With offline website builders, you can create your website at your own pace, even if you don’t have a stable internet connection.
Increased Control and Flexibility: Many offline builders allow you to work directly with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This provides more control over the design and functionality of your website.
Faster Load Times: Since everything is stored locally, there’s no need to wait for images, templates, or other assets to load over the internet. This can significantly speed up your design process.
Backup and Security: All your website files are stored on your local machine, which means you don’t have to worry about server outages or security breaches affecting your website.
Best Offline Website Builder Software
Now that we understand the benefits of offline builders, let’s dive into some of the best offline website builder software available today.
1. Adobe Dreamweaver

Your website design is the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen! Did you design it yourself, and if so what did you use? I miss aesthetic websites, but I've notice the online cyberpunk community has def kept that up.
aaaa!!! thank you so much!! that means so much to me to hear, thank you I did! I put it together using a combination of my own assets and the materials available in Canva Pro. There's a lot of design elements I have access to like transparent PNGs and short GIFs. From what I understand the catch is that websites built with the Canva web builder can only be on a Canva-owned domain, and I learned the hard way that I couldn't transfer my work to a different domain host. I really like using it though! It's essentially drag-and-drop, which is great for me because while I know HTML, my medication makes it difficult for me to keep things organized in code. I'm currently working on an overhaul of the site, but I'm making sure to maintain the neon-hell aesthetic. Something about building the "fake" ads was the most fun:
originally when I launched the site they were at the top of the page and had a functional "skip ad" button that would take visitors from my "ad space" directly to the portfolio. :3c thanks so much for visiting! And thanks for the feedback, I sometimes worry it's "too much" but since I'm not submitting my portfolio for consideration, I have no reason to restrict the madness

WordPress Themes and Plugin Development
Unlocking Endless Possibilities
WordPress, the world's leading content management system (CMS), owes much of its popularity to its incredible flexibility and extensibility. At the heart of this versatility lies the realm of WordPress themes and plugin development, which empower users to customize their websites and add powerful functionality. In this article, we'll explore the fascinating world of WordPress themes and plugin development, and how they can revolutionize your online presence.
WordPress themes are the visual and functional frameworks that determine the look and feel of a website. They provide the structure, layout, and design elements that make your website visually appealing and user-friendly. Whether you're building a blog, an e-commerce store, or a corporate website, there's a vast array of themes available to suit your needs. From minimalist and modern designs to bold and vibrant layouts, the options are endless. Themes can be easily customized using the WordPress Customizer, allowing you to personalize colors, fonts, and other visual elements to match your brand identity.

However, sometimes the available themes might not offer the exact features or functionality you require. This is where plugins come into play. WordPress plugins are software components that enhance the core functionality of your website. They can add features like contact forms, social media integration, search engine optimization, security measures, and much more. The WordPress plugin repository offers a vast library of free and premium plugins catering to various needs. If you can't find a plugin that suits your requirements, you can even develop your own custom plugins to meet your unique needs.
WordPress themes and plugin development offer endless possibilities for customization. If you have coding knowledge, you can dive into the world of PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create your own themes and plugins from scratch. For those with limited coding experience, there are numerous drag-and-drop page builders and theme frameworks available that make customization a breeze. These tools provide intuitive interfaces and pre-built modules, allowing you to create stunning websites without writing a single line of code.

Furthermore, the WordPress development community is vast and active, constantly pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with themes and plugins. With countless tutorials, forums, and resources available online, learning and improving your development skills has never been easier

Top 5 CMS Platforms Compared: WordPress vs. Shopify vs. Wix vs. Webflow vs. Joomla
Choosing the right Content Management System (CMS) is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when building a website. Whether you're launching an e-commerce business, a blog, a portfolio, or a full-scale enterprise site, your CMS determines not just how your website looks, but how it grows, scales, and performs.
In 2025, the CMS market is more diverse and competitive than ever. With so many options available, it's crucial to pick the platform that aligns best with your goals, technical skills, and business model.
In this article, we compare five of the most popular CMS platforms: WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Webflow, and Joomla — covering their pros, cons, ideal use cases, and pricing.

Verdict:
If flexibility and control matter to you, WordPress.org is a powerhouse. It’s ideal for users who want full ownership and are willing to manage their site actively.
2. Shopify
Overview:
Shopify is a CMS built specifically for e-commerce. It powers over a million online stores and provides everything you need to sell products online — from inventory to payments.

For e-commerce, Shopify is one of the easiest and most scalable platforms to get started with. It’s perfect for businesses that want to focus on selling, not coding.
3. Wix

Wix is a drag-and-drop website builder that simplifies the process of creating attractive, functional websites without writing any code.

Small service businesses
Artists, photographers, and content creators

Premium plans start at $16/month
Verdict:
Wix is perfect for users who value simplicity and speed over advanced features. If you want to get online quickly with minimal effort, Wix is a great option.
4. Webflow
Overview:
Webflow is a modern, designer-friendly CMS that combines the power of custom code with the ease of a visual editor. It's ideal for building pixel-perfect, professional websites.
Pros:
Visual editor with full HTML/CSS control
Great for animations and interactions

Designers and creative agencies
Tech-savvy entrepreneurs
Businesses needing custom design without full development
Pricing:
Site plans start at $14/month (Basic) and $29/month (CMS)
E-commerce plans from $42/month
Verdict:
If visual design is your priority and you have some web experience, Webflow gives you professional control and creativity unmatched by simpler CMS platforms.
5. Joomla
Overview:
Joomla is another open-source CMS similar to WordPress, but with more advanced built-in functionality. It's used by developers and organizations that need more flexibility and user control.
✅ Pros:
Open-source and free to use
More robust user permission control
Great for multilingual websites out of the box
Flexible content structure and layouts
❌ Cons:
Steeper learning curve than WordPress
Smaller community and plugin ecosystem
Not beginner-friendly
Best For:
Developers and tech-savvy users
Government, educational, and enterprise sites
Sites requiring multiple user roles and languages
Pricing:
Free core software, but you’ll need to pay for hosting, templates, and extensions
Verdict:
Joomla is a solid choice for users with development experience or unique content requirements. It's not for beginners but offers great power and control for the right audience.
Final Thoughts
When choosing a CMS, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Each platform shines in different areas. Here’s a quick summary to guide your decision:
Choose WordPress if you want full flexibility and access to the largest ecosystem.
Choose Shopify if your focus is e-commerce and you want an all-in-one solution.
Choose Wix for simple, fast website creation without technical complexity.
Choose Webflow if you care deeply about design and want pixel-level control.
Choose Joomla if you need robust content management and multilingual support.
Your ideal CMS will depend on your goals, budget, technical skill, and future growth plans. Invest time in exploring demos, community feedback, and use cases — and you'll find the perfect platform to bring your digital vision to life.

When you first start out to set up your website, you'll quickly find that the actual process is easier than you probably thought it was. That's because there are so many easy website generators out there, it doesn't take much experience with computers to figure out how to set up your site for business. Basically, if you can point and click with your mouse, drag and drop an element where you want it, and then type or upload a picture from your computer, you can create a fully functioning website in just a few short hours (or faster if you pick up things quickly or have some experience). You may choose to use a online website builder for creating a decent looking website. Otherwise you can create your own HTML website and host it with a website hosting provider (who hosts a website?) But what about the other things that go into building a website—those intangibles that will make your new website stand out from the competition. After all, if it's so easy to create a website and everyone is doing it, doesn't that mean there will be a whole lot more websites out there competing for your business? How To Set Up Your Website The Right Way—A Beginner's Strategy Guide Absolutely. That means the person who is most prepared and has the most knowledge about setting up their website will be the person or organization that comes out on top. To help you be that person with your new website, here are some strategic points for setting up your first website—for a more in-depth look at how to tackle each of these tasks, see the link below: Know Your Demographic The absolute first step in setting up a website is having a perfect picture of your audience. Who are you selling to? Who are you trying to attract? What kind of websites do they like? What do they want to know? These are the questions that will directly dictate your website's look, feel and content. If you don't know your target audience, your website won't be molded to attract them and no matter what else you do next, your website will fail. Do Keyword Research Now that you know your demographic, it's time to find out what they are searching for. Keyword research through tools provided by Google Analytics and Bing Webmaster tools (among many, many others) will help you get a feel for what similar sites are optimizing around. If you aren't optimizing for what your target demographic is searching, your website will fail because they won't be able to find you. My favorite tool for keyword research is Google Keyword Planner. Pick A Catchy Domain Name For Your Website Getting a really catchy domain name for any business is not easy. Almost every domain that is a dictionary word is already sold out. You may need to take help from domain name generation tools to pick the best domain that suites your business and website needs. Check Out The Competition Next, you want to see what you're up against, not just on a keyword spreadsheet, but up close and personal. Go through your competition's websites. Not only will that let you know what your demographic is seeing elsewhere, it can point out some things that you might have overlooked in your own website planning. Remember, you never want to rip off your competition; you want to key in on what makes your organization or business different and better than what's out there—not what's the same about you. Map Out Your Tree In web design theory, the simplest and most effective method for laying out your website is by using a tree hierarchy. Think of the way that a tree branches out—this is how you want your website to appear. For example, the main homepage would be the trunk of the tree, containing a solid foundation of information without really branching out into specifics. For each specific that needs elaboration, another page—or branch—should be built. For instance, if you run a dog-walking website, the main page would branch out into weekly services or one-time walking services, each with its own page. If the weekly services
have different pricing plans, pop-up boxes could be created (which you can think of as leaves on the branch). I recommend you to use a Mind Mapping Tool for clearly laying out your website tree. Pick The Right Web Host When you have your website's initial layout mapped out, it's time to start hunting for the right web host for your site. Not all web hosts are created alike. Look for hosting companies that offer exactly what you need. For instance, if you are going to be an ecommerce site, you'll need the option to pick a secured server as well as the ability to set up a shopping cart on your site. If you have 20 pages that need to go up, your web host provider has to offer that. Pick A Theme For Your Website The best way to have a impressive website in short time is to pick a premium theme from website template marketplaces like Theme Forest. There are many types of already created themes available on these marketplaces. Below are few advantages of using a theme Professional look and feel. Already tested on multiple platforms and browser by many other users. Easily customizable. Supported by professionals who are good at theme design. Low Cost Easy to use and change. Multiple commonly used features are already available. Market Your Website Once your website is ready you need to start sharing it with people to attract some visitors. One of the best places to market your website are social networks like facebook, twitter and Google+.
