Dragoons

Final Fantasy II introduced the iconic character class of the Dragoon.

(As an aside, "dragoon" is actually a mistranslation. The Japanese word is 竜騎士, meaning "dragon knight". A dragoon is, historically, a particular kind of soldier who has a horse to ride for transport, but does not ride a horse in battle. That makes him more mobile than a foot soldier, but cheaper than a cavallerist since he doesn't need a trained war horse. Quite unrelated to how the term is used in English-language Final Fantasy games! But "dragon knight" sounds so generic, and I kind of like the sound of "dragoon", so I still use it.)

The dragoons of FF2 aren't really much like what the class is known for later, either. The trademark "Jump" command doesn't exist yet, and Richard's default weapon is a sword, not a spear. His armor in the original NES game is a generic knight's armor, with a helmet that covers his whole head. The WSC version (published in 2001) has changed Richard's armor into something that looks a lot more like Kain's, with a dragon themed helmet that leaves half his face bare, but that's a retcon after the fact.

What distinguishes FF2 dragoons is that they ride dragons (specifically wyverns). That's their whole gimick! I'm sad that this was dropped in the other games, although I guess it'd be hard to implement in a battle system. FF5 does feature wyverns prominently, but there's no particular connection to the dragoon class.

The playable dragoon character's name in FF2 is Richard, a name that is used in FF4 for Kain's late father, who was also a dragoon. It's a neat reference, but I have seen fans try to twist it into the two Richards being one and the same, and sadly that doesn't work at all. (Even disregarding the fact that the two games, like all main FF games, take place in completely different worlds.)

In FF2, the dragoons and their wyverns lived on the island of Dist, but were massacred by the Evil Empire before the game begins. Richard is the last surviving knight (because he was out of commission while inside Leviathan!). The other two survivors are one wyvern and her egg, and a widow named Elena and her unnamed son. Elena's husband and the boy's father was a dragoon named Philip. Richard does promise to take care of them - presumably to join their family, since they are the last of his people. But he dies during the story before he can make good on that promise. So even if the boy was Kain, as I've seen suggested, the dragoon father he would have remembered would have been Philip, not Richard.

That said, I like Richard. I can imagine it's one of those names that come up again and again within the dragoon community.

Braid and flowers

tags: Siegfried centric. I just really wanted a soft Sieg with flowers sob. Hinted at the end Siegfried x reader/danchou.

When Siegfried arrived at the Dragon Knights's meeting chatter stopped all of a sudden. Lancelot looks at him with wide eyes while Vane is smiling at him. Percival looks like he wants to say something, the annoyance is clearly dripping from his expression, his nose curled up like a kitty but he decides to click his tongue and go back to the topic they were previously discussing about.

So what caused these reactions?

It's because of Siegfried new hairstyle; a soft braid expertly intertwined with fresh flowers. Some strands fall free on the man's face making Siegfried look ethereal. It's a look that suits him, not that it is hard when you look like an Adonis the second you wake up, but it enhances his beauty. He talks with the other knights about the current expenses and how to improve the other soldiers' training not minding the other knights staring a bit too long his hair.

"Let's take a break!" Vane proposes when the sun starts setting, already pulling toward the table fresh baked goods he brought from home. Nobody has the heart to refuse, not even Percival that usually prefers to finish the job and just then take a break. Vane is also the first one to question the elephant in the room for the relief of his colleagues.

"Oh this? One of the trainees made it, he told me there is a celebration in town-" Siegfried starts to explain how a harvin trainee wouldn't stop looking at his hair so Siegfried asked him if there was anything wrong.

"N-No. Excuse me for staring, it's just…" The young boy looked down, the fringe of his bowl cut long enough to cover his black eyes. "In town, there is a celebration for a holiday that is really important to my family-" The harvin says, fidgeting with his fingers "Where I come from everyone has long hair so we can braid them for this holiday, but I had to cut them before coming here."

Siegfried nods at the kid's words, but still misses the point of the guy's stare. "I was staring because I miss my long hair. I know it's stupid, I can't even go there-"

"You want to braid mine?" It's Siegfried's curt question, voice firm as always. The harvin finally looks back at him, eyes sparkling with joy, but his Adam's apple bobs with worry. "You don't have to be anxious, I don't mind if you braid my hair, just-" Siegfried sits down, giving his back to the kid "Don't brush too hard, my scalp is sensitive." His honey-colored irises are soft, brown long eyelashes making his eyes look sweeter. There is no real bite in his voice trying not to worry the kid more. Siegfried sees the kid nodding before feeling his small fingers combing as best as he could Siegfried's soft hair. There were some knots, after all the knight doesn't spend too much of his time on his hair, but the braiding was more or less painless.

"Let me add the finishing touch!" The man looks behind, noticing all the flowers the kid picked up.

"Are you going to put them in my hair?"

"Yes. Is it a problem? Excuse me for not-"

"Can you please add a sunflower?" The harvin widened his big eyes before nodding and smiling at the knight's request. And after the finishing touch, Siegfried was free and the harvin looked relaxed.

The kid thanked him again and again before going back to his training. Siegfried smiled seeing him walking away, happy to have brought peace the the trainee's troubled heart.

"That's why I have my hair braided like this. It looks good right?" Siegfried turns toward the big mirror in the room. He has never been vain but he honestly thinks the kid did an amazing job. The flowers never dropped from their places, adding light to his brown hair. They should train together to reciprocate the favor.

"You look beautiful Siegfried." Lancelot replies, there is no mirth in his voice, just genuine appreciation.

"Yeah! It softens your features and shows off your sweet side. Don't you agree Percival?" Vane adds with a bit more enthusiasm. Percival doesn't say anything at first, lost in thoughts while drinking his cup of tea.

"Percival?" Vane asks again. This time he is able to pull the prince out of his thoughts.

"Yes, you look really nice." He brushes it off, eyes showing his mind still hasn't connected with them.

Because Percival knows there is no festival in town. He is sure of it. But decides not to say anything, the lie of the harvin is clearly harmless. The red hair smiles before sipping again from his cup, happy his teacher still hasn't lost his humanity.

"Let's go back to work." Percival orders and the other knights' nod, already too much time lost chit-chatting. Siegfried agrees with them, one hand caressing his hair, feeling the textures and bumps of the hairstyle.

He isn't sure he will be able to go to town later, but Siegfried would like to try this style again when the captain visits them.

He'd love to hear their opinion and maybe spend a bit of time together in peace, surrounded by the same flowers adorning his hair.

Little detail I didn't add in the drabble: The harvin grew up in an all women family. He got taught early how to braid hair and used to do that to relieve stress but now with short hair he doesn't know how to push out the negativity! The festival was all an excuse but he was too worried people would insult him for having a "female" hobby or just...having worries or anxieties like a normal human being. Don't worry next time harvin kid! No real knight would do that!💪🏻

Kung fu panda: Po's best companion

Still on the train of Kung fu panda, and...you know everyone saying the franchise is dead now cause of it's 4th movie. everyone seemed to forget that there was always 6 movies that were going to be made and that the 4th movie isn't THAT bad. don't believe me, go watch the megamind sequel and see how bad the movie COULD have been.

but, my feelings on everyone's negativity aside, I still want to talk about that kung fu doing Panda. here I want to give you all MY opinion on I believe is Po's best companion.

each and every instalment has given us a slew of new characters to fight alongside Po on his journey to become the world's best kung fu master.

in kung fu panda 1 we have Shifu, Tigress, crane, monkey, viper and mantis. these 6 follow into the tv series legends of awesomeness. while there are they are quite a few new companions, such as Peng, there only lasted for an episode or two. so it's the 5 who are po's companions.

in the second movie, the only two knew characters or Ox and Croc but they stay in prison. the soothsayer is sorta like Oogway, not a companion but a spirital teacher.

in the third movie, we take a change and have Po's dad, mr.Ping and his birth dad, Li Shan as Po's companions.

in the paws of fury, they introduce Po's panda students Nu Hai, Bao, Jing, and Fan Tong.

in Dragon knights we have the wandering blade, Rukhmini, Akna, Colin, and eventually Klaus Dumont.

now and in the newest movie we got Zhen in kung fu panda 4.

those are alot of friends, but who do I believe was and still is Po's best companion? answer:

it's Luthera, also known as wondering blade. Ha ah, believed I would tell you it was tigress, huh? sorry to you Tipo shippers but I believe Blade is not only Po's best companion but the shipper in me thinks she is also Po's best girl.

let me explain. while Po cares for everyone of his friends in their own ways there were some moments keeping me from thinking they were the best side kick to po and vise versa. some are his family, his students are really just his students, this includes Zhen and shifu is his teacher. the closest to being Po's true companion was monkey in the furious 5 and legends of awesomeness, still it isn't tigress, the reason is that each one claimed Po was their best friend in an episode or another (Tigress had yet to say that), I have so many issues with the legends of awesomeness series for making Po a borderline jerk so it makes sense that sometimes they'd turn their backs on Po. Even Tigress wants to Punch but holds back, hint: in an episode where Po makes the 5 forget their memories Tigress does punch Po and says it felts so right despite not remembering Po. so what about the movies? in the movies Tigress is super close, what prevents me from saying Tigress is Po's companion is that if she is ever given a choice, go with Po or stay behind to protect the jade palace, she choose to stay at the palace. similar in the third movie when shifu had to tell her to go find Po.

thus we get to Blade/Luthera. the dragon knights have some flaws. but it does things that I didn't realize that I wanted to see in this universe of animals. it's what do the other locations outside of China are like and what animals live there. like india, brazil, and england. it also made me realize I wanted to see Po interact with another bear, a different type of bear. it makes sense that he meets a brown bear.

this isn't a Blade vs Tigress debate as I seen many do compare the two and argue they should have just put tigress in since the two act similar ,....ok, do you sense a pattern here or is it just me, I'm saying Blade is different in ways that make her a better companion to Po.

as I mentioned Blade and Po have yin and yang dynamic. in one episode Po can be the hero while Blade is the side kick and in another it's Blade taking the lead and Po giving support. Blade keeps Po grounded and focused but needs him to give her emotional support. this is how her relationship on Po develops. while Po, losing his title as dragon master (this show is a separate canon so it's master instead of warrior) and he admits he also depended on Blade. in one moment the two admit they were lost before meeting each other. their combat mirrors this, Blade with swordsmen ship and Po with hand to hand, this gives them coverage. Po teaches Blade some belly attack and headbutts that she uses throughout while Po finally uses Blade's technique and fights with a sword. their reunion in the third season is also a spin hug, take that how you will. this all comes to the end of the series, in the beginning Po was on an eating vacation. taking stops here and there, and when the series is done Luthera joins Po on his adventure, Po stating they can go anywhere they want and her replying, that sounds perfect. Po is happy at the end when he says that he found..a best friend.

all this is why I believe Po and Luthera are the ultimate kung fu panda duo. this is just me thought, tell me who you believe is Po's best companion?

The White Knight

A squadron of Dragon Knights wander through the unclaimed forest after not hearing back from a previous group that was sent ahead to scout out the area.

They find the reason to the silence soon enough when they find the slain bodies of soldiers.

One of the soldiers begin to panic.

“They’re aren’t supposed to be any Black Falcons here!”

Before the can scout around the nearby area for any clues on who could have attacked the previous party, they are blinded by a piercing beam of light fired from within the shadows of one of the trees.

A female warrior armored in white dazzling armor leaps forward with her sword imbued with her arcane power.

Within moments she clears out the Dragon Knight party save for one frightened soldier.

The solider gasps, “Y-you’re a Lumerian Knight! You’re n-not supposed to be here!”

The Warrior brings her blade closer to the soldiers neck and replies, “And who told you that? You all thought that we would continue the defensive play while your sacked village after village? That we would never intervene? Tell your general that some Lumerian Knights are gladly ready to take the fight to them. Tell them that some of us are tired of the medieval politics that bind us, and are ready to act regardless.”

The Warrior let’s the solider go to deliver her message to the rest of the Dragon Knights in the area.

She sheaths her blade and sighs, “I wish I had listened to you earlier, Rix”

Another chapter expanding on the Dragon Knights and Lumerian Knights. Seems like some Lumerians are tired of trying to keep peace and are ready to pick a side in the ever rising conflict.

Can’t reveal the White Knights connection to Rix just yet, but it will probably be significant to his history. 😉
