Okay, also, I really love all the incredible friendship dynamics between the four "besties." They are clearly not all into the same things, but they seem genuinely supportive of and excited about each other's interests/talents. So often in shows set in high school, they have characters scoff at/disparage their friend's interests that don't align with theirs and use it as a source of conflict. This isn't done at all in the show & I love it. Instead it's like- Spoon immediately recognizing Mickey's love of basketball and hyping him up about it, Ema showing up for Spoon's audition & supporting him when he's panicking, Spoon being amazed & excited & even stepping back and giving Ema the spotlight when she joins in (and being so excited about her being cast in the lead role), Ema coming to Mickey's basketball tryouts to cheer for him (Spoon, too, but he seems to have an official role that required him to be there, but Ema seems to have shown up just for Mickey), Rachel & Spoon & Ema all immediately being excited to go to Mickey's basketball party, Ema & Spoon being so enthusiastic about Rachel's cheer routine, Spoon wanting to learn some of the dance & Rachel teaching him. I just love a supportive friend group! Mickey's a bit less involved in his friend's extra-curricular life (though I want to recognize that he's very supportive/protective of them in other ways), mostly because he's so embroiled in the mystery plot that it takes up a lot of his screen time, but I really hope we get a chance to see him more in this capacity in a possible (please) season 2.

But bad things happen when they go about them alone, and my heart ached for Spoon when he got carted away. It was also frustrating that the girls mostly took for granted that he'd find his way out of a mess that they knew led to Mickey facedown in the sand by the water and in a hospital bed.
Not that Candy wasn't a great assist, but they also knew there wasn't much the poor girl could do. Otherwise, she would've freed herself or saved Ashely a long time ago on her own.

Interestingly enough, it was chilling when Agent spoke to Spoon about his tattoo and loss during Harlan Coben's Shelter Season 1 Episode 5.
Not only did Agent imply that Spoon is no stranger to loss, that it's a familiar bedfellow for him, and that there is some profound sadness behind Spoon's smile and deflection via humor, but Agent suggested that Spoon would experience great loss again.
They also offered to have a special someone placed in the tattoo whenever Spoon was ready. And up until this point, it's felt like Mickey is Spoon's entire world and that somehow, in some way, that person would be Mickey.

But then we had Spoon's connection with Candy, and it was pure devastation as things went from bad to worse for them.
Spoon recalled a time he spent with his grandparents, and seeing Candy in her former life, when she was a young, happy kid with her mother before life dealt her shitty hands, her mother died, and she got human trafficked.
And it just hit you in the gut that Spoon Spindell, as pure of heart as he is, could represent a time that Candy loved most in her life, of innocence, happiness, and hope.

Spoon got to represent all of those things to Candy in her final moments, and he gave her that gift; he was that gift.
But in turn, like a sin-eater, it came at a significant cost to him, as he had to watch her die in front of his eyes, and with her went a bit of his innocence and purity.
The light left his eyes every bit as much as the life left hers.
She got shot trying to save him, and you know he will internalize that a bit. He looked so shaken and thoroughly traumatized from that point forward, even though he must've had the ability to communicate with Mickey so they could rescue the girls in time.

For as long as Spoon has that temporary tattoo, Candy's name will slot into that spot. And this work will keep taking all these bits and pieces from Spoon in a way that makes you sad.
It also makes you reflect on things like Bat Lady's tombstone as an ode to the loss of her childhood because of the Holocaust.
While what she has these teens doing is far from comparable, it makes you a bit angry that she's subsequently stripping these kids of their childhood and innocence by encouraging them to be part of this world.
It was also noted that Spoon was on Bat Lady's wall, and it's evident that Mickey's presence and friendship have saved Spoon from something, seemingly a lonelier life. But goodness, I'd love it if this series delved more into who Spoon Spindell is beyond the supportive instant best friend who found a sense of purpose when Mickey arrived.
And I sure as heck wish we could understand the depth of how Candy's death affected him without the narrative shifting because there wasn't enough room to cover that ground within this hour.
He's a fascinating enough character who we haven't gotten to spend a lot of up close and personal time with outside of his role as a supporter, so now is the time to dive into that.

Jess Watches // Mon 16 Oct Synopses & Favourite Scenes
Call the Midwife (with mum) 6x00 Christmas Special 2016
A group from Nonnatus House travels overseas in order to assist a struggling clinic in South Africa.
I would like to know more about Sister Julienne and Dr Myra and if they had a romance at some point. You definitely get the vibe that they've explored each other bodies in a past affair. Also, if Barbara were to sing softly in my ear I too would've got pregnant.
The Consultant 1x05 Sick
Craig calls in sick so he can investigate a lead about Patoff - the mystery deepens as bizarre details are revealed. In the meantime, Patoff continues to play his own games with the employees.
Wild theory: Patoff is an A.I and the gold skeleton was being made for him, which is why he struggles walking upstairs, because his limbs are so heavy.
Our Flag Means Death 2x04 Fun and Games
After he's banished from the Revenge, Blackbeard unwittingly receives relationship advice from some dysfunctional old friends.
Anne & Mary having the toxic relationship, while Ed & Stede were so tender with each other. A contrast in vibes I didn't know I needed when I saw who was guest starring. Also, I 🖤 🦄.
Over the Garden Wall 1x08 Babes in the Wood
While Wirt and Greg lay down to rest, they're drawn into a dreamworld of cherubs, flowers, and clouds.
The weirdest episode yet, which is mad to say about an always weird animation lol. I hope with Beatrice's help that Wirt can rescue their leader.
Shelter 1x08 Found (Season Finale)
The gang finds strength and comfort in being together. Mickey saved Bat Lady's life which she repays by finally telling him about a terrible tragedy that took place in the tunnels under her house.
How did Mickey and Bat Lady not have to go to the hospital for smoke inhalation?? He was so clever to figure the pipe thing out; Rachel proudly accepting bestie status. And possibly more with the way she was looking at Ema lbr; Spoon should join the cheerleader team so Rachel can teach him all their routines. This shit was bananas! (B-A-N-A-N-A-S)

So much to unpack with this season finale, it's hard to pick out snippets. But here's some bulletpoints from the review!
I cannot applaud Adrian Greensmith enough for his exceptional work as Spoon Spindell.
Spoon emerges from the opposing sides of Ema and Rachel regarding Abeona as someone who has his eyes wide open about the pitfalls and flaws but doesn't write off the good work .Mickey may be the most obvious choice of running lead in Abeona, as is his legacy, but Spoon Spindell feels like the most unexpected but well-rounded choice for working deeply within this organization.
Adding Rachel Caldwell into the mix only makes them stronger. They're a precious, untouchable, endearing quartet like no other that works, and it's impressive how effortlessly the cheerleader slots into place among them.
It's also adorable to think of this Gen-Z version of The Breakfast Club, a jock, popular girl, nerd, and emo actually speaking to each other, hanging out, and saving the world together and openly.
One of the other promising components of the finale is the special bond that emerges between Ema Winslow and Rachel. Seriously, is anyone else shipping the hell out of them?
We have barely scratched the surface of Abeona, what it does, and the good and bad among it, and Brad is the key to unraveling all the mysteries about it.
As much of an ass as Troy Taylor was to Rachel and all the blunders he made, one can't help but feel bad for him. He had to piece things together about his mother on his own, and when he confronts Hannah about it, her first instinct is still to lie to him. Nothing is worse than when you know something is true and finally give someone the chance to be honest, and they still lie.
Troy confronting his mother gives a bit of drama, but then we cut away before Hannah tells Ken the truth, which essentially robs us of the tension the series has built up all season.
Harlan Coben's Shelter has so much story left to tell and so many directions to go in after this strong finale. We need a second season! I'm not ready to let go of these characters when they've worked themselves into my heart.

Jess Watches // Wed 4 Oct Synopses & Favourite Scenes
Ragnarok (with friend) 3x01 War Is Over
Deprived of his hammer, Magne continues to battle the Giants in accordance with the modern rules. But when he breaks a pact, the truce crumbles.
The older woman who Magne visits just casually referring to 'her wife', and Magne's non-reaction to it. Then just as he's leaving, sharing his sympathy for her.
Supernatural Academy (with friend) 1x13 Fractured Part A
Jessa and Mischa return home to an unfavorable welcome; Kristov continues to round up troops to raise the Dragon King; while the Faeries honor Reese, Jae's motives are questioned.
Even when the fae council were questioning Jae's motives, they were still super respectful of their pronouns. And it's cute that Jae still has the rainbow facepaint and pride pin from Hali.
Shelter 1x05 See Me Feel Me Touch Me Heal Me
Mickey and Spoon discover Ema's big secret. To find Ashley, Rachel needs a gigantic favor from Troy. Hannah is making big life decisions.
The reveal of Ema's true family history was a fun surprise and Spoon's rambling reaction to it was so awkward lol. I had a feeling something was off with Whitney the way she talked about her popularity on social media. I hope she does actually like Ema and that's not what she's been lying about.
I'm a Virgo 1x04 Balance Beam
Cootie and Flora take their relationship to the next level intimacy-wise; Jones rallies people in protest for the way Scat was treated and explains 'the Crisis of Capitalism.'
The episode starting with Jones pushing a woman up against a window while kissing her, then followed by the devastating news about Scat was emotional whiplash. Followed by a prolonged and very vocal, but not overly graphic, sex scene in which they were very creative with the camera angles. And then ending with the protest and the very effective and cleverly illustrated way Jones explained capitalism and it's evils. A wild ride of an episode.

rachel has had the worst night of her fucking life at the beginning she was like “hell yeah a lime green lamborghini!” now she’s had to break ashley of “the dungeon”, watch her nearly get sold into sexual slavery, watch ema have a gun held to her head while the only thing she could do to stop it was let ashley get sold into sexual slavery, watch a woman get struck and killed by a car, get shot at. and now as if that wasn’t bad enough she had to go track down her boyfriend because his mom is texting her asking where he is and on the way into the party to find bf she’s sandbagged by another friend who’s drunk and upset because she fucked up what she had with ema and to rachel’s credit she’s like fuck this. so she goes and finds her drunk boyfriend and god the cherry on top of this whole night he sexually assaults her then breaks up with her. she deserves to kill at this point.
#she also had to pretend to be a lesbian. but really she’s a fucking mvp for all this shit she literally provided the gun#shelter lb

Seven Sundance Selections in 2020
With Oscar nominations around the corner, I start to look forward to some of the most hyped indie films of 2020, debuting in America at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The lineup consists of the standard mix of unique comedies and dramas, but also some midnight features to keep you awake at night. Highlights include Julie Taymor’s first film since 2007’s Across the Universe, Carey Mulligan in the revenge thriller Promising Young Woman, and horror novelist Shirley Jackson’s biopic, directed by experimental filmmaker Josephine Decker. Read on for details on my seven most anticipated films out of Sundance.
1. The Glorias (Julie Taymor)

She’s back! Possibly one of the most important movies of my high school years, Julie Taymor hasn’t directed a feature film (besides filmed stage productions) since her visionary Beatles musical, Across the Universe, which turned twelve years-old this year. (Thirteen by the time The Glorias finally debuts.) Taymor’s new film, based on Gloria Steinem’s best-selling memoir My Life on the Road, stars Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore as young and old Gloria, respectively. Everyone’s favorite singer-turned-actress, Janelle Monae, co-stars as Ms. Magazine co-founder Dorothy Pitman Hughes. (All the time spent reading Oliver his copy of Baby Feminists is starting to pay off; I admittedly didn’t know of Ms. Pitman Hughes before!) As a history lover, I notice Taymor is one of two directors on this list who specialize in historical fiction and biopics with a unique artistic vision. The other is Pablo Larrain, but maybe after Josephine Decker’s production of Shirley debuts, she can join them in the Artful & Cinematic History Club. (I’m dreaming big when I say: maybe someday I can!)
2. Possessor (Brandon Cronenberg)
Brandon Cronenberg: Clearly profiting from nepotism? Yes. Talented storyteller in the same genre as his father? Also yes. Antiviral, Cronenberg’s first film, was gory, bloody, and surprisingly bright, featuring a breakout performance for indie film’s resident millennial weirdo Caleb Landry Jones. (An appropriate directorial debut from the son of the director of futuristic body horror like The Fly and Videodrome.) Young Cronenberg’s second film stars Jennifer Jason Leigh and one of the most versatile actresses ever, chameleon Andrea Riseborough. Possessor is also one of at least two movies at Sundance 2020 featuring Christopher Abbott (the second is drama Black Bear), whose work reliably impresses in arthouse genre fare like Piercing and It Comes at Night.
3. Shirley (Josephine Decker)

With a wealth of adaptations hitting streaming platforms in recent years, like The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, the late writer Shirley Jackson is having a Moment and Shirley promises not to be a typical period biopic. Director of Madeline’s Madeline from the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, I consider Josephine Decker a Sundance veteran. Her surreal approach and focus on unhealthy relationships fits well into Shirley Jackson’s world of mystery, secrets, and the paranormal. Starring Elisabeth Moss as Ms. Jackson and Michael Stuhlberg as her husband, Shirley’s strong cast bolsters a relevant topic, an up-and-coming director, and the untold story of a creative mind’s real life.
4. Kajillionaire (Miranda July)

July previously directed and starred in indie hits Me and You and Everyone We Know and The Future, two melancholy films about isolation and connection. A writer, performance artist, dancer, etc., July does it all and I don’t always “get” her work, but it’s safe to say that no one else is like her. Also, in relation to the previous entry, she co-starred in Madeline’s Madeline as a worried sick, unstable mother. An indie queen of the film scene and the art world and pretty much any medium she attempts, I look forward to a returning trip to July’s cinematic world in the New Year, especially since this particular voyage stars Evan Rachel Wood, Debra Winger, Richard Jenkins, and Gina Rodriguez.
5. Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell)
youtube
It’s a New Year’s miracle: one of my favorite actresses starring in the kind of movie that South Korea excels at and often stokes controversy in America: the revenge film. I haven’t seen Carey Mulligan star in something with such glossy marketing since The Great Gatsby in 2013. She’s mostly stuck to dramas, like Suffragette and last year’s Wildlife, but I welcome her to the world of genre film with open arms. One of the few Sundance selections with a trailer already on YouTube, check out the latest thriller and feature film debut from Killing Eve showrunner Emerald Fennell.
6. The Nowhere Inn (Bill Benz)

St. Vincent/Annie Clark previously dabbled in genre filmmaking when she directed a segment, “The Birthday Party,” for the feminist horror anthology XX, so promisingly, this isn’t her first rodeo. I’m also a huge fan of Carrie Brownstein’s television comedy collaboration with Fred Armisen, Portlandia. So when I found out Brownstein and Clark star together in a Midnight selection at Sundance this year, I felt hyped before I even read the intriguing IMDb synopsis: “St. Vincent sets out to make a documentary about her music, but when she hires a close friend to direct, notions of reality, identity, and authenticity grow increasingly distorted and bizarre.” Sign me up for a distorted and bizarre cinematic experience, please!
7. Ema (Pablo Larrain)

One of the movies I bought when my old Blockbuster closed down, Pablo Larrain’s Oscar-nominated No stuck out to me for its vintage aesthetic and historical story of a groundbreaking election campaign in Chile. I saw Larrain’s English language debut, Jackie, in the iconic Cinerama Dome in Hollywood while sipping some kind of coffee drink from the Arclight’s café and felt revitalized by such a perfect movie. I can point to Jackie when I’m doubting my love for contemporary film and say “But how could you not love film anymore when movies like Jackie exist?” Less emotionally affected by his inventive biopic Neruda, but straight up disturbed by the fallen priests in The Club, I look forward to any offerings from Larrain, including this upcoming story of a woman reinventing herself, Ema. (It doesn’t hurt that he frequently collaborates with one of the most gorgeous men alive, Gael Garcia Bernal.)
