“Discharge” for the fifth installation @totheawe at @emmediayyc Combination of animation, performance, and projection. This is the first project that I’ve done with composing my own sound. I’d like to do more performances like this, I find it quite liberating. I’m still figuring out what I want from it though, but quite happy with this piece. Check out my website, link in bio, for the full video. Special thanks to all those who came out and To the Awe for asking me to participate! 📸Bon Adrienne Aseniero www.bonadriel.com #contemporaryart #projectionart #projection #performance #sound #drawing #drawingasperformance #eye #animation #calgary #emmedia #totheawe #jackiehuskisson #sublime #soundart #yyccalgary #calgary #mediaart (at EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwQaNlRBA3o/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jfztft714emz

New Arrival: Rita McKeough: Works
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This critical monograph documents Rita McKeough’s collaborative artistic process and pedagogy from the late 1970s on; her interactions with visual and media arts communities in Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary, particularly alternative music and performance scenes; and the audio, installation and performance work that is her ongoing contribution to the contemporary Canadian art community.
EDITOR: Diana Sherlock
AUTHORS: Anthea Black, Eli D. Campanaro, Elizabeth Diggon, Johanna Householder, Areum Kim, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Deidre Logue, Jude Major, Rita McKeough, Jeanne Randolph, Mary Scott
PUBLISHERS: EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society, M:ST Performative Art Festival, TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary
Includes vinyl record with five audio works from installations and performances—Shiver (1995), Opponent and My Heart Beats too Fast from In bocca al lupo/ In the Mouth of the Wolf (1991), Lament from Dancing on a Plate (1991), Veins(2016) and one new composition, Ashes (2017).
A limited number of the publications include an artist multiple by Rita McKeough that references The Lion’s Share (2012), an exhibition which incorporated kinetics, performance, and sound, and used a humorous and dream-like scenario to raise questions about the complexities of our relationship to eating animals.
This project has been generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary, EMMEDIA, M:ST and TRUCK; institutional sponsor, the Alberta College of Art + Design; and community contributors, Owens Art Gallery, Sackville University and NSCAD University.

YOU ARE HERE is a live audio/visual performance, occupying a middle ground between digital puppet show, short film, and multimedia play. Audience members are invited to take their photographs in a booth before the show, their faces then placed like masks onto blank characters. Via modelled figures possessing their likenesses, viewers are introduced into an alternate dimension — quiet, flat, empty, unsettling disassociation constructed from the backdrops of dreams. A live narrative constructs several short stories, loosely paralleling visuals on the screen. The show features a mix of predefined content, improvisation, and opportunities for subversion.
YOU ARE HERE was performed as part of the 2017 Particle + Wave, a media arts festival put on by EMMEDIA at Festival Hall.

My Birthday...really! I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you. I mean you, reading this. God has pulled us through a lot of challenges in life and when a day like this comes once in a year it is of joy, great joy and celebrations. All glory to Almighty God that giveth the gift of life... Thanks to you all for your prayers and best wishes... So, I've also come to encourage you in this song "Head Up" and hoped that you accept it as a gift from me to you...and anytime you listen remember Psalm 121... "I can't describe the sound yet and when I hear your testimony as you dance through the hallway acknowledging your help in God to your next open door with its courageous melodies...knowing that we don't dwell in past glory..." Are you ready for exploits...? INTERSITE VISUAL ARTS: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
INTERSITE VISUAL ARTS: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Deadline: October 1st, 2017
Intersite Visual Arts advocates for contemporary art practices through the decentralized presentation of exhibitions, happenings, and performances outside of the traditional gallery setting. By actively engaging unsuspecting audiences in the public sphere, Intersite seeks to create a supportive and receptive climate to foster the development and innovative presentation of contemporary art.
A Calgary-based initiative, Intersite is a collaborative program presented by six local contemporary art centres:  EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society, M:ST Performative Art Festival, Stride Gallery, The New Gallery, TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary, and Untitled Art Society.
Intersite is currently seeking proposals to produce a site-specific project to be presented in April / May / June of 2018. Through this opportunity, the selected artist, collective and/or curator will be commissioned to create and present a project that activates the cultural landscape of Calgary and considers alternative spaces, engages diverse publics, and challenges traditional forms of contemporary art presentation.
The following materials should be included in your application:
1. Proposal: Describe your project. Provide complete details of your geographic and material requirements, including any special equipment and technical needs (maximum 1 page)
2. Budget: Provide a detailed budget of expenses including production, artist fees, travel, and accommodation (if applicable) to a maximum of $3,000.00.
3. Support: Please include up to ten pieces of additional support material, including digital images, videos, text excerpts, or audio clips alongside a corresponding numbered inventory list detailing all necessary descriptive information. We will review up to a maximum of five minutes of time-based work.
4. Curriculum vitae: Describe your artistic background and include all relevant contact information (maximum 3 pages)
Submissions are only accepted via email. Please format all written materials as a single .pdf document. Images must be labeled with the applicant’s lastname_firstname and numbered chronologically as .jpg files no larger than 1 MB in size. We accept links to video and audio work hosted online. Emailed applications must be submitted in a single .zip folder containing both documents and images.
Send completed submission packages by October 1, 2017 to:

Back in September, Calgary’s EMMEDIA and Beakerhead came together to teach people about circuitry and music. The Atari Punk Synth workshop drew everyone from teens to seniors to teach them how to build their own synthesizer in just an afternoon. This was one of the first stories that gave me the chance to use reporting to show readers the awesome things you can do in Calgary if you’re willing to get your hands a little bit dirty. All materials by me.
