CRAZY CLIFFHANGER 😞 WHAT HAPPENSSS

part 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what we've all been waiting for!!!!!! get ready. last part soon

"hey," gabe managed, his voice disrupting the eerie silence around them. when their gazes met it felt like time stopped. neither of them had seen one another since gabe left for new hampshire a few weeks ago and now they stood feet apart teetering on a dangerous line with each other.

it felt weird to not just jump into the other's arms like so many times when gabe's gotten back from an away game. emma stared at the boy in front of her like she couldn't actually believe he came.

her heart was racing, but she managed a smile and waved him over. when he sat down on the step she stuffed her hands into her hoodie so he wouldn't see how much she was shaking due to the nerves.

"hey," emma mumbled and it sounded like her voice was echoing because there was no other sound but their breathing.

"hey," gabe said again because he had no idea what to say or where to start. he did not wanna fuck up his one chance to make things right again, so he opted for nothing and let emma lead the conversation since she invited him out.

however, emma was thinking the same thing with nothing to say, so they sat in silence instead. she wouldn't meet his gaze that she could tell was trying to find hers. her eyes locked on the clear sky above them and the faded outlines of downtown in the distance. there was so much to say, but neither of them knew how to say it nor how to begin. the blonde started regretting her rash decision, but she listened to samy’s and drew's voice in her head telling her to hear him out.

"i didn't think you were such a night owl," emma finally broke the painful silence. she still didn't meet his gaze, but she could see him looking at her from the corner of his eye.

"i'm not, really. i kind of just woke up," gabe shrugged a bit.

"so i did wake you up?" he said she didn't.

"i mean..kind of but i've never woken up to texts like that before. it was weird," the hockey player admitted and emma flushed.

"i was really restless and was making rash decisions. sorry i woke you up. i should have waited until like a reasonable time to text."

"don't apologize. i get it. my mind's been racing too," gabe sighed and emma side eyed briefly before he caught her looking.

"big final later?"

"yeah something like that.." maybe he should have just come right out and said he's been thinking about her all week, but gabe hadn't gained that courage yet. he just hoped emma could read between the lines of what he wasn't saying.

she could.

she just didn't know how to say it because it felt like she said everything she needed to. it was on gabe to say what he didn't get to say on that phone call, but she also knew him well enough to know that gabe hated bringing things up first even when he knew he should.

so emma kept talking because it wouldn't go anywhere if she didn’t and maybe she was starting to enjoy his company, "i saw your debut."

gabe's head snapped to hers and emma finally met his gaze.

"you did?"

"the livestream, yeah. it was really cool seeing you on the big stage like that," the blonde managed a tiny smile. that sinking feeling gabe's felt since he came back slowly disappeared hearing the girl say that to him.

even after unintentionally hurting her she still supported him.

god, he fucked up real bad.

"thank you. i-i appreciate it. it was crazy cool. i was super nervous skating out there like that," the new rookie admitted.

"i could kind of tell, but you looked really great out there. you really belong on the ice."

"i love it out there. it's like a second home to me. i can just..forget everything for two hours," gabe found emma's eyes again. they lingered for a bit longer than they should have until she looked away. he frowned and remembered how much hurt he caused still.

"look, i know you don't wanna keep hearing my bullshit, but i'm an idiot for not telling you about all of this. a really huge fucking idiot. i was always so caught up in the moment that every time i thought about telling you, i got scared. i was scared you'd hate me for choosing hockey over school or..thinking i was going too fast..or worse, you'd break up with me because you'd decide you didn't wanna do long distance. i couldn't face that with you or myself, so i just..didn't tell you. i thought i'd man up and tell you before that game, but i never got myself to call you. it's such bullshit, i know, and you have every right to hate me," gabe finally got it out. he didn't look at her as he said it because he couldn't see the hurt on her expression. it'd just make himself even sadder.

emma was silent for a long time. she processed his words, tried staying rational because she knew getting mad like she did on that phone call was not the right thing to do. what samy said had stuck in her mind, "i don't hate you, gabe. i don't think i could ever hate you if i tried."

they met gazes, "you don't?"

"i don't like using the word hate. i'm upset and mad, yeah, but i could never hate you. i shouldn't have said all of those things to you on the phone in the way that i did. i was just..mad and confused..my emotions were talking for me. i should have heard you out more and i'm sorry i acted that way."

"no, no, i deserved it. i was a fucking shitty boyfriend for never talking to you about something that affects both of us. i was shitty for keeping it from you and talking to everyone but you.." gabe argued because if anything he was the bad person here not emma. she had every right to lash out on him like that.

"let's just say there was a lot of things we should have done and said instead on that call. we'll be here all night if we just apologize like that back and forth," the blonde decided and her and gabe apologizing back and forth was not the reason she texted him to meet up and talk. the boy shut his mouth as the silence engulfed them again.

"how long did samy and julianne know?" emma broke the silence and asked the one question she did not want to hear the answer to, but asked anyway.

gabe grimaced, "like..three weeks?" he remembered telling them for sure that he was probably going to sign on after the season was over.

he hated watching the way emma frowned, "and when did you start talking to them about it?"

"probably after new years," gabe's voice was quiet because he knew how bad it sounded to hear that two of the girls emma had insecurities about knew all of this way before her.

"can i ask why it was easier to talk to them than me?"

"em.."

"please tell me, gabe. i love samy and julianne to death and i know they'd never...but you still chose to talk to them over me," her voice broke and so did the hockey player's heart.

"i guess it felt easier? i don't know. it's not an excuse and i'm not trying to make this one, but i guess...i've known samy, julianne, and hannah since i was like..16. we grew up together and..you know i'd never think of any of them that way. samy's like my sister. we fight like siblings, but i go to her not because i don't wanna talk to you, but just..i don't know how to explain it. it's different with them than it is with you..i guess? that sounds bad. i guess simply, i don't need to do anything to impress them or think about what i'm doing with them. i know i don't need to impress you, but i guess i still feel like i need to.." the dark-haired boy trailed off because he definitely was not making sense and he probably sounded like he was making more excuses for himself.

"it's like...this decision i made was one that was going to affect the future of like everything. you are—were..whatever..i want you in my future. if i told you, i worried i would burden you and make you think you suddenly need to change things around to fit into this future and i did not want you to change anything or feel burdened by this decision i was trying to make so i turned to someone who yes, is going to be in my future but wouldn't be burdened by it. it's like..it's like samy talking to ryan or i about things going on in her life before will sometimes. she doesn't wanna burden him with stuff knowing how much he's already got on us plate. it sounds bad and she's working on it, but..you get what i mean? it's not like i was purposefully talking to her to hurt you. i wanted to try and avoid hurting you even though i did anyway.." gabe continued when emma didn't respond.

the blonde stared at him for a long moment, her frown settling into a more straight face as she slowly understood his words.

"i promise samy or any of them have never meant anything to me in that way if that's a worry you still have. sure, maybe when we were like..fourteen and i didn't even know her i just knew she was luke's little sister, but will's like my brother which means samy's a sister to me. although, i do understand why you have the worry and i'm sorry i've made you think otherwise if i ever have. i never meant to."

the boy apologized so much he didn't have anything more to say so he just waited for emma to talk again. the girl looked deep in thought as she processed everything he just said.

"i think because every guy i've dated has always had another girl waiting for him, i've been trained to think it's the case with everyone..i never doubted samy or you..i think i just..my brain likes to jump to the worst, especially dating athletes, sorry. you're nothing like the stereotype though," emma finally said.

"wow, thanks i guess. i try not to be," gabe chuckled and emma let out a small laugh too. "i'm really sorry you've had negative experiences with guys like that. it sucks when they just continuously prove you right and i'm sorry i did too. i never meant to..hurt you in this way."

"the thing is though you proved me wrong. i'm serious about being nothing like your sports' stereotype. you showed up, you texted, you called, you hung out with me even after a long practice...we just..miscommunicated i guess," the blonde frowned again.

"yeah, i guess we did."

"i get making a decision as huge as signing on with a professional team is a huge deal. my brother faced the same decision when choosing a college for swimming and i, unfortunately, had to face the decision of if i wanted to continue swimming into college or not. i know how the feeling is and i know how hard it is. i shouldn't have been so fast to be hard on you about not saying anything. i do get it's a major decision and..i wouldn't have been burdened at all, but i do get it. i didn't tell my brother about quitting until i did it."

"i didn't know you swam too?"

"for a long time, yeah, tyler and i swam together. i quit because i lost the love for it and i didn't wanna put my body through something i wasn't enjoying on a harder level, so yeah, i get it. i didn't or i wasn't thinking that night we called, but i get it now and i am sorry for acting like i didn't and making you feel worse than you already did," emma fiddled with the ends of her sweatshirt. gabe wanted so badly to reach out and bring her into a hug, but he resisted the urge knowing it could ruin everything if he did too soon.

"also samy's a really great person, they all are, and i didn't mean to make something that wasn't ever anything. i was really insecure at first and felt out of place, which you know, but after hanging around them at world juniors and just talking more, i do feel a lot better. it's just my anxieties will fester and create something—"

"hey, hey, hey. you don't have to keep apologizing. i'm sorry for not being more reassuring when i should have or done something to not make you feel the way you did when we were all together. they were my friends and..i'm sorry," gabe cut her off because honestly, he did get it and if it were the other way around, the hockey player knew he'd have the same anxieties.

another silence engulfed them after they both stopped apologizing for everything. this was always the hard part because what happened now?

gabe was leaving in two days. emma didn't know when she'd see him next because she was going home for a little bit and she was still deciding if she wanted to go to the lake house. however, did any of that really matter when all she wanted to do was fall back into the arms of the boy sitting next to her?

no. not really.

"when do you leave again?" emma asked as if she didn't know.

"wednesday at 3. i have a game on thursday at 6," gabe said. it was monday..well tuesday morning. gabe had less than 24 hours left.

it was on the tip of emma's tongue but she just couldn't get it out. she knew she wanted him again, but was that stupid on her part? was she being rash again?

"when do you go home?" the boy asked.

"tyler and i fly home thursday morning."

"what are you doing tomorrow..or later today after 3?" there was no way gabe was letting this go without at least trying to get her back.

luckily, emma was really hoping he'd say something like that.

"nothing. what are you doing?" she raised her eyebrow.

"can i take you on a date?" gabe grinned a bit.

for the first time that night, emma genuinely smiled back, "yeah, i'd love that."

Emma is a wreck, she tells everyone including Samy that shes holding up but they all know how shes doing and I think Samy facetimes her one night and asks how shes doing and just tries to comfort her and Emma just starts sobbing and spewing out everything and how shes ‘never ever trusting a hockey player again’ and how shes thought he was different and if it ever gets back to Gabe hes just a WRECK

part 3 to this angsty side plot -- i will say that they WILL be getting back together at some point it's just a matter of when

samy’s not expecting emma’s call when her phone rings close to midnight. the brunette carefully answered and was immediately met with heavy sniffles and small sobs. the soccer player quickly frowned as she got up to go to bedroom for more privacy even though she knew hannah wouldn't mention anything.

"emma? are you okay?" samy asked gently as she saw the blonde trying to wipe her eyes.

"fuck, hey samy, sorry..i didn't mean to call you so late without warning..i just. wow. i didn't know who else to call," emma rambled a little but the youngest hughes was quick to shake her head.

"hey, don't apologize. what's going on? is everything okay?" samy was quick to shut down emma's doubts about calling. the blonde sniffled and then reluctantly shook her head.

"i thought i was fine and i was fine with breaking up with gabe, but like..it all hit me at once laying in my bed and i just started straight up sobbing. i just feel so so lost, samy. i miss him so much but like he fucking hurt me and lied to me..i just.." emma lost her words through her cries which broke samy's heart seeing her so upset. she wished she could reach through the phone and hug her.

"i get it, i get it 100%. it's so hard and you feel so lost. i'm so sorry, em. i don't know why he didn't tell you about all of this..we honestly had no idea he didn't say anything. we were just as shocked when he admitted it to us that night," it'd been plaguing samy's mind since the game that emma thought samy purposefully kept such a huge decision from her.

"no, i know. i know you wouldn't purposefully or hurtfully keep something like that from me. don't apologize. it's not any of your faults. i just don't get why he couldn't tell me. like..was he scared of telling me? my reaction? he knows how happy i would've been for him. i just..and to think i trusted him. i trusted a hockey player when i swore i wouldn't do that shit again," emma continued crying and samy was at a loss for words. she had no idea what she could say that would make this better because when she went through it, none of what people said to her made it better.

"shit, em..i don't know what to say. i have no idea either. he's shitty for not telling you. he never really told any of us or mentioned like anything," samy mumbled with a frown. she watched how emma continuously wiped her eyes from the tears that unfortunately kept coming.

"i get if you don't wanna talk about it, but like..how did you get through this? what did you do? i talked to drew the other day and he said some insightful things i've been thinking about. he said i should maybe hear gabe out, but i don't even know if i would really want to at this point. i mean what more could he say to me?" emma rambled on just because she had no one else to talk to. she talked maya out for the most part and obviously, emma wasn't going to go and rant to some of gabe's best friends and teammates.

"well honestly, it was a lot of crying, sitting in my bed, not really doing anything. my brothers kind of forced me out of the house so it kind of helped...i know it's so hard. if you think it might help bring you closure or help decide if you wanna take him back or not, it may help to hear him out? it never hurts to hear someone out and then think about their side before you decide anything," the soccer player suggested with a small shrug.

"i'm just scared that if i talk to him again, my heart will lead the conversation and i'll take him back when i shouldn't have."

"are your heart and head saying two different things?"

emma nodded.

samy knew that feeling too well. her heart said a lot more than her head when it came to hearing will out and deciding to take him back.

"i will say that if you do decide to take him back, it will take awhile for things to go back to the way they were. it took will a long time to trust each other again and rebuild that part of our relationship," the brunette mentioned and emma frowned.

"if you don't mind me asking, what did you two say on that phone call?" samy and everyone else had been wondering what went down between the two because gabe wouldn't say.

emma cringed thinking back to that night and how she went from sad to heartbroken in a matter or seconds when gabe dropped the bomb on her.

her phone rang and emma immediately picked it up knowing it was gabe calling about the game. she had watched the entire thing on her computer back in boston since she couldn't make it with finals so soon. her heart was broken that the boys lost the game and seeing the aftermath of all of them hugging one another was even worse.

"hi gabe," emma answered carefully.

"hey, em," the boy sounded just as upset as he looked. the blonde frowned.

"i'm so sorry about the game. that fucking sucks. you played so well, though. how are you feeling?" emma asked and she had no idea how much gabe was struggling to tell her what was about to happen in less than 6 hours now.

"it's okay, thank you. i'm feeling..okay. i don't know. sad?" gabe mumbled.

"yeah, that's expected. is there anything i can do for you? i know i can't do much because i'm not there.." the blonde offered and gabe cringed hearing how sweet she was being and how horrible he was for what he was about to tell her.

"no, thank you though baby. i..i think i just need to process it all.."

"that makes sense. well, i'll be around when you land back here. i can't wait to see you. i've missed you," emma smiled a bit.

the dark-haired boy rubbed a frustrated and stressed hand over his face. he paced the hallway a bit as he bit his tongue and knew he needed to just force the words out.

"hey, so..about that..i uh, i won't be coming back to boston.." he began and emma raised her eyebrow.

"what do you mean? are you going somewhere?" the girl was confused.

"uh..yeah. i-i, uh..i'm going to new york. to play..for the rangers..to sign on.." gabe finally spit out and it finally made sense to emma.

the color drained from her face hearing him say that.

"wait..you're going to new york? to sign on?" emma asked just to clarify what she was hearing.

"yeah..my plane leaves tomorrow morning at like 6 in the morning," god gabe felt so horrible. there was silence for a long time on emma's end and that made him feel even worse.

"did you just decide this? i..i don't..how did you decide this?" emma stuttered over her words as she tried to process what her boyfriend was telling her.

"like..i knew going into this game and the end of the season that no matter the outcome, i was going to sign on and fly out to play their last few games of the season. my stuff's already in new york."

"so you knew..weeks ago is what you're telling me?"

"yeah.." gabe squeaked out.

"and so..you just never included me in the conversation? you never thought to mention something to me? who else knew??" emma's emotions were quickly changing between anger, sadness, and betrayal.

"uhh..like everyone."

everyone? what emma was hearing was that her boyfriend spoke to everyone about this decision but her. he told everyone but her. the anxieties clouded her mind as well as the tears.

"what the fuck, gabe?" emma couldn't stop the small cry escaping her lips. the boy's heart broke hearing her.

"i..i promise i was going to tell you..i just..i wanted to tell you, but like i couldn't—"

"no, i don't wanna hear your excuses. you chose not to tell me. that was a decision you made. there are no ifs about that," emma snapped. "i'm your fucking girlfriend, gabe. what the fuck?"

"baby, i promise i wanted to tell you. i was just scared you would—"

"scared i would what, gabe? scared i'd leave? scared i'd be mad? i would've been so fucking happy for you. how could you not talk to me about this?" emma's anger was manifesting into betrayal and frustration all at once. gabe could hear it in her tone and he was kicking himself for not just saying something sooner.

"i-i-i don't know...i knew you'd be happy for me i just..i don't know, em. i got scared. it was happening all at once and i wanted to include you, but i just didn't know how. this is some big, life changing shit and like..." gabe trailed off.

"right, i get that, but you should have told me, or included me. i'm your girlfriend. i-i..do you not trust me? am i not priority?" the blonde was rambling at this point as the tears fell.

"no, no you are important to me. you are, i promise you are. i just...fuck i don't know. i don't know. i should have said something, i know that, i just. ugh. i don't know, em. i didn't even know if i wanted to sign on two months ago...or if i was even ready.."

"i can't listen to this. i-i don't wanna hear it. i don't. if you really cared about me, you would have said something to me sooner or just included me in the conversation. i-i don't...i don't wanna be with someone who is gonna hide things from me and think of me as less important. that's not what i deserve nor do i want to be with someone like that. we're done, gabe," it was rash and emma knew that, but she couldn't keep listening to his excuses. she didn't wanna hear him stumbling over his words trying to make it better when none of it was going to be better.

"wait, em. no, no..can we talk about this more? can we talk when we're not so heightened in our emotions? i do care about you..i never meant to hide this from you, i promise, please.."

"no. i don't wanna talk about this with you. we're done, gabe. i can't. goodbye," and emma hung up leaving gabe in the hallway of the arena he just lost his sophomore season in.

"so..i guess i didn't let him get a lot out on that call. we were both really upset and i think it all just..i dunno..spiraled?" the blonde finished the story. samy was silent for a moment as she processed all of what emma said.

"wow, em...that's a lot," the youngest hughes admitted.

"yeah, i know. am i shitty for not letting him talk more??"

"no, no, you're not. he should have told you sooner. do you feel like there needs to be more said or.." the soccer player trailed off.

"maybe? i don't know. if i just kept my mouth shut in that stupid french class maybe we wouldn't be in this situation right now," the blonde frowned while more tears spilled over. samy felt so horrible that she couldn't do anything.

"no, don't say that, em. i am in no way trying to vouch for him or excuse his actions, but he is a good person. he really isn't like other hockey players who just play girls to play them. he cares a lot. he was so excited when he told us he was talking to you..i'd never seen him like that before. i know it sounds stupid, but maybe you should hear him out? just for a bit? give it more time?" samy knew saying that stuff probably sounded like she was trying to make excuses too, but if any hockey player she knew wasn't like the stereotype, it was definitely gabe.

"you think?"

"i mean it's up to you, but it doesn't hurt? like drew said? i heard he's supposed to be back in boston in a week to finish up classes..maybe that could be your chance?" the brunette said gently.

"wait, he's coming back?" emma didn't know this.

"i heard from one of the guys. you don't have to, but think about it at least."

samy and emma ended their call shortly after. the poor blonde was left with even more to think about and the fact that there was a chance she was gonna run into gabe next week when he came back. the thought flipped her stomach upside down, but also her heart leapt at the chance to see him—that pull she worried would lead her down the wrong path.

Round 3 - Reptilia - Accipitriformes

Our next order of birds are the Accipitriformes, colloquially called “raptors” or “birds of prey”, though these paraphyletic terms are often used to include unrelated orders such as owls and falcons as well. Accipitriformes are comprised of the living families Cathartidae (“New World vultures”), Sagittariidae (“Secretarybird”), Pandionidae (“Osprey”), and Accipitridae (“hawks”, “eagles”, “kites”, and “Old World vultures”).

Accipitriformes typically have a sharply hooked beak with a soft cere housing the nostrils. Their wings are long and fairly broad, adapted for soaring flight. They have strong legs and feet with raptorial claws and opposable hind claws. Almost all Accipitriformes are carnivorous, hunting by sight during the day or at twilight. They are predominantly active predators and/or scavengers, and many are specialized for particular prey items.

Accipitriformes are generally monogamous over many years, though they will choose a new mate if their old mate dies. Females are usually larger than males, sometimes to a substantial degree. Courtship typically involves displays of flight, and presenting gifts of food. Most Accipitriformes build nests, and return to the same nest site each breeding season. Typically, both the male and female will build the nest, incubate the eggs, and raise the young. Many Accipitriformes are long-lived, and can take several years to reach sexual maturity.

Accipitriformes arose in the Eocene, around 50 million years ago. DNA sequence analyses suggest that divergences within the Accipitriformes began around the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, about 34 million years ago.

The California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is often considered a conservation success story, having just barely escaped from the brink of extinction. In 1987, only 27 individuals remained. Conservationists at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo rounded up all 27 remaining wild birds and began a captive breeding program. Beginning in 1991, captive bred California Condors were reintroduced into the wild. Today, around 561 California Condors live wild. The bird is still critically endangered, and its population is only kept stable by regular vet checks and frequent captive releases, with all wild California Condors being tagged and closely monitored. Like many North American Accipitriformes, the California Condor is threatened by lead poisoning. Lead shot is often used for hunting, and when it enters an animal, it explodes into tiny fragments. When hunters field dress an animal (ie. butcher it at the kill site and leave the inedible bits for scavengers) small fragments of lead shot often remain in the carcass. It can take a fragment of lead as small as a pea to kill a bird the size of an eagle.

The Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) and the King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) (image 4) appear in a variety of Maya hieroglyphs in Mayan codices. While the Black Vulture is often depicted as a symbol of death or attacking humans, the King Vulture is sometimes portrayed as a god with a human body and a bird head. According to Mayan mythology, this god often carried messages between humans and the other gods.

The genus Cathartes locates carrion by detecting the scent of ethyl mercaptan, a gas produced by the bodies of decaying animals. The olfactory lobe of the brains in these species is particularly large compared to that of other animals, giving Cathartes vultures an incredible sense of smell.

The Secretarybird (Sagittarius serpentarius) (image 3) is a highly unique Accipitriform, sporting long legs and being mostly terrestrial. The tallest Accipitriform, it can grow to a height of as much as 1.3 m (4 ft 3 in). The Secretarybird eats small vertebrates and insects, which it flushes from the grass by stomping its long legs. It will then chase after its prey on foot and kill it by stomping. Only small prey items such as wasps and grasshoppers will the Secretarybird kill with its beak.

The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) (image 2) is the only living species of its family, and the most widespread Accipitriform, living almost worldwide wherever there is water. The Osprey's diet consists almost exclusively of fish. Their vision is well adapted to detecting underwater objects from the air. Prey is first sighted when the Osprey is 10–40 m (33–131 ft) above the water, after which the bird hovers momentarily and then plunges feet first into the water. They will often completely submerge underwater, only to immediately surface and take flight with their prey in tow.

The Palm-nut Vulture (Gypohierax angolensis) is a uniquely omnivorous Accipitriform, with a diet consisting of 60% to 90% palm-fruit, as well as wild dates, oranges, other fruits, some grains, and acacia seeds.

Most vultures have flat feet adapted for walking, and lack the grip strength of their predatory cousins. But the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) has maintained strong feet, which it uses to carry and drop large bones in order to crack them open to more manageable pieces. The Bearded Vulture is the only known vertebrate whose diet consists of 70–90% bone.

The Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) is one of the few birds known to use tools. Egyptian Vultures will use a pebble as a hammer on large eggs they wish to eat, swinging the pebble down onto the egg repeatedly until it cracks. They will also use twigs to roll up wool, making it easily transported back to their nest.

The Bearded Vulture and the Egyptian Vulture are the only birds known to use cosmetics. They will bathe in iron-rich dust or mud, or rub it on their bodies, dying their feathers yellow, orange, or even red. Both sexes will dye their feathers, and it seems to serve no purpose other than to look good.

The Snail Kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis), Slender-billed Kite (Helicolestes hamatus), and Hook-billed Kite (Chondrohierax uncinatus) are specialists in preying on snails, which usually constitute 50–95% of their diet.

Many accipitrids of almost all sizes have been recorded as capturing and then flying with prey of equal weight or even slightly heavier than themselves in their talons, a feat that requires great strength. Usually, the bird will leave prey at the kill site and return to feed repeatedly. Accipitrids such as the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax), Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) and Crowned Eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus) have successfully hunted ungulates, such as deer and antelope, and other large animals (kangaroos and emus in the Wedge-tailed) weighing more than 30 kg (66 lb), 7–8 times their own mass.

Most accipitrids are solitary, or only share space with their mate, but the Harris's Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) is known for being a “pack hunter”. Flocks of Harris’s Hawks generally consist of a dominant female, her mate, and the young of previous years. The flock will hunt cooperatively, working together to hunt comparatively large prey such as hares, and sharing the meal after bringing it down.

Some harriers have evolved to become polygynous, with a single smaller male breeding with and then helping multiple females raise young.

The single largest known tree nest known for any animal belonged to a Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), and was found to be 6.1 m (20 ft) deep and 2.9 meters (9.5 ft) across, and to weigh 3 short tons (2.7 metric tons). Bald Eagles usually build onto their previous nest every year.

The Bald Eagle is considered a conservation success story. The Bald Eagle was severely affected in the mid-20th century by a variety of factors, among them the use of the pesticide DDT. While DDT was not lethal to the adult bird, it interfered with their calcium metabolism, making them either unable to lay eggs, or lay eggs which had thin, brittle shells which could not stand the weight of a brooding adult. By the 1950s there were only 412 nesting pairs in the 48 contiguous states of the USA. Other factors in Bald Eagle population reductions were a widespread loss of habitat, as well as both legal and illegal shooting. In Alaska alone, approximately 70,000 Bald Eagles were shot in a 12 year period. The Bald Eagle was declared an endangered species in the USA in 1967, and laws were put into place prohibiting killing of the birds. But the most significant protection occurred in 1972, when DDT was finally banned in the US, and in 1989 when it was banned in Canada. The Bald Eagle has significantly rebounded since then, and as of 2007, is classified as “least concern”, a testament of what regulation can do. However, today, the greatest threat to eagles in the US and Canada is the continued use of lead, with more than half of adult eagles across 38 US states already suffering from lead poisoning. Bald Eagles mainly eat fish and carrion. Lead poisoning comes from lead shot used by hunters, as well as lead sinkers used by fishermen and ingested by fish.

The White-rumped Vulture (Gyps bengalensis) is critically endangered, with a global population of less than 6,000 individuals. Once numbering in the millions, the White-rumped Vulture was thought to be “the most abundant large bird of prey in the world”. Following the Indian Vulture Crisis (see below), the White-rumped Vulture has declined by 99%, the steepest decline in birds since North America’s Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius).

Vultures are nature’s disease control. They are highly effective scavengers, and are able to digest and resist many diseases with their highly acidic stomach acid, stopping the spread when they scavenge a carcass.

Old World Vultures are the most imperiled group of birds on the planet, with around 70% of vulture species threatened with extinction. The extent to which we need vultures became incredibly apparent beginning in the 1980s in India, with an ongoing event now known as the “Indian Vulture Crisis”. Most of India’s vulture populations plummeted due to indirect poisoning from NSAID painkillers left in the bodies of deceased cattle. After vultures began to disappear, carcasses were left to rot, increasing the populations of less-effective scavengers such as rats and feral dogs. The feral dog population increased by the millions, also increasing the amount of rabies bite cases. Since the disappearance of vultures, India has seen a significant amount of rabies cases, causing more than 47,000 extra deaths. Animal carcasses left to rot have also contaminated the water supply in rural areas. It is estimated that the Indian Vulture Crisis has cost over $40 billion in economic impact.

Similarly, the African Vulture Crisis has only just begun. In Africa, vultures suffer from accidental and intentional poisonings, as many farmers leave poisoned carcasses out to keep predators away from their livestock. Poachers will also poison and kill vultures, as their presence can alert park rangers that the poachers have made a kill.

While New World Vulture populations seem to be doing fine (excluding the California Condor), and are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, it is best to be wary should the Americas face their own vulture crisis. Like in Africa, American farmers may target vultures as perceived threats to their livestock, or poison predators resulting in the accidental poisoning of vultures. Vultures also suffer from many of the same threats as other birds of prey, including lead poisoning, rodenticide poisoning, and loss of habitat. Most South American vultures are also severely understudied, and their populations could be dropping without our knowledge.

1. Arizona governor Ok's over the counter birth control

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) has expanded access to over-the-counter birth control that will “soon be available to Arizonans,” according to a press release.

Arizonans 18 and older will soon be able to go to their local pharmacy and purchase oral contraceptives without a doctor’s prescription.

2. ‘Great news’: EU hails discovery of massive phosphate rock deposit in Norway

A massive underground deposit of high-grade phosphate rock in Norway, pitched as the world’s largest, is big enough to satisfy world demand for fertilisers, solar panels and electric car batteries over the next 50 years, according to the company exploiting the resource. About 90% of the world’s mined phosphate rock is used in agriculture for the production of phosphorous for the fertiliser industry, for which there is currently no substitute.

6. No Longer Endangered: The Bald Eagle is an Icon of the ESA

When the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was enacted in 1973, bald eagle population numbers across the country showed that the species was close to disappearing. Before the ESA, in the 1950s and ‘60s, eagles were shot routinely despite the protection. The ESA listing helped bring public attention to the issue.

Through the early 1970s and into the early ‘80s, numbers increased gradually. Then, as you got into the ‘90s, there was still gradual growth. From the late ‘90s into the 2000s, the population really exploded. There was a doubling rate of every several years or so for a while.

7. Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon drops 34% in first half 2023

Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon fell 34% in the first half of 2023, preliminary government data showed on Thursday, hitting its lowest level in four years as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva institutes tougher environmental policies.

Data produced by Brazil's national space research agency Inpe indicated that 2,649 square km (1,023 square miles) of rainforest were cleared in the region in the half year, the lowest for the period since 2019.
