Who is your style icon?

My style icon is a mix of two people. Tracee Ellis Ross, I love her use of fun colors and bold patterns and Audrey Hepburn. I love her use of tailoring and shapeliness of her outfits. The combination of these two is my dream fashion icon.

Who is the most prolific in the Bridgerton group chat?

I think the person who is really good at getting people together and do social stuff is Bessie Carter who plays Prudence Featherington.

Which other celebrity would you trust to give you a tattoo?

It’s got to be someone that’s good at art because i want a cool tattoo. I’m trying to think! I know Simone’s really good at drawing. So I’d think she’d be able to give a cool tattoo and she does have a tattoo gun and she does know a lot about tattoos. Shelley Conn, who plays my mom on Bridgerton, is very crafty. She does a lot of DIY stuff but I don’t know if that translates to tattoos. So either Simone or Shelley. There’s so much pressure to get a tattoo that’s really meaningful that you won’t regret and I have such an inertia because I put so much pressure on it. So I think probably I’d get something really silly and meaningless. Maybe like a pug. I don’t know.

Where were you when you found out you'd got the role of Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton?

It’s actually a really good story. I was helping my mum on her allotment. So we were making a polytunnel with PVC tubing and I was measuring and cutting. I get a call from my agent telling me that I’m gonna be in glamorous gowns for the next six months so real juxtaposition there. The skill and the effort that go into making each of these gowns, I mean they’re couture gowns. So i had a lot of respect for the art that was created with the costumes.

How excited were you about joining the show?

I think the experience of new cast members is very different from the season 1 cast because, you know, when they were filming season 1 and when they were casting season 1, they, i don’t think they had any idea of what it was gonna be.

That is was gonna big as big of a phenomenon as it is. But joining season 2 and joining season 3, you know, we know how important it is to people.

What’s your beauty secret?

I have two actually. I’m feeling very generous today. The first thing is and I got from a lovely person that I met at British Fashion Counsel. The best “eyebrow gel” to get feathered laminated brow look is to use latex-free eyelash glue because I have very horizontal brows. So if you brush them up with latex-free eyelash glue, they stay and you get that laminated look without having to actually laminate them. The other tip is and I got this from a Youtube video that Sir John, Beyonce’s makeup artist, did where he said he uses eye cream as lip balm because it won’t add that glossy texture that Vaseline or gel might have. So it’s a matte moisturiser essentially.

What are three things you can’t live without?

I’m very practical- My phone. A phone charger. Electricity. But if I’m thinking non-practical: chocolate, tequila and tabasco. I love food so– yeah. All food related.

What style advice do you live by?

The best style advice I can give is: don’t focus on trends. Find out what you enjoy, what works for you regardless whether you see it on a magazine. Just be true to yourself. And don’t be afraid to experiment.

Truly, my go to look is jeans and a nice top. It’s just so effortless and classic and you don’t have to think about it too much. Right now, I’m loving the Levi’s Wide Straights, they are so flattering and easy to wear. And I love having a colorful, printed top on with some fun colorful boots. And that’s kind of my go to look everyday.

What’s your dream date?

April 25th, it’s not too hot, it’s not to cold. That’s from one of my favourite movies; Miss Congeniality!  

I think the first few dates I would prefer a drink, where you can look someone in the eye and get to know them and talk to them. But generally I love activity dates, maybe bowling or going for a hike. To be able to share an experience with someone is really fun.

What book do you recommend to everyone?

Essays in love by Alain de Botton. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. It’s devastating, but for me it’s about the exploration of what it means to be human. All About Love by Bell Hooks, I think, for young women, it’s a really important book to read.

Is there a TV show you wish you were in?

Succession. I say this in every interview like genuinely,I would love to be in Succession. My housemate and I are rewatching it right now in preparation for season 4 because it cannot come soon enough. I’m team Kendall, but my favourite interactions are cousin Greg and Tom Wambsgans. I think I’m probably a bit like Shiv or would be like a Shiv in terms of the character I would play.

What’s you go-to comfort meal?

God, I have so many! But my favourite meal is something called kothu parotta and it’s a very classic Tamil dish. It is just the perfect combination of salt, fat, acid, heat. And it’s just, urgh, the umami! It’s so good. But if I think about easy quick comfort meal, it’d just be a bowl of pasta with pesto.

How open are you about your life on social media?

Before the show I think I was really open about the ups and the downs. And I think that when you have a lot of people watching you, you do feel the scrutiny a bit more, and I have noticed holding myself back a lot and I think that’s something that I need to change. I want to go back to feeling like myself, but it’s a process of figuring that out.

What makes you happiest?

I’m on the journey of figuring that out. I think there’s a lot of pressure for us to have the answers to these complicated philosophical questions but I feel like the purpose of life is the journey and the experience of these things. I don’t think we are supposed to find the answers to these questions. But, things that make me happy? Food, watching a good film, hanging out with my family and friends.

What are you most excited for right about?

I just wrapped up filming on a movie which will came out next year- I cannot say when. And I’m developing a limited series at the moment, and there are a couple of things I cannot mention! I hate to be that person! But what I’m really excited about, in terms of the industry, is that there really is a push to have diversity in front of the camera and behind the camera, which is equally as important. Like, the projects that you hear circulating, whether I’m involved in them or not, are so cool and are gonna be so important for future generations in terms of representation and it’s incredibly exciting.

Typography Tuesday

We take a lighthearted turn this Tuesday with a few wood engravings of illustrated initials by Australian/English designer and printmaker Edwina Ellis from her 1983 book The Animal Alphabet, printed on Velin d’Arches paper by Michael Mitchell at his Libanus Press in Marlborough, England, in an edition of 75 copies. Each engraving has a stately, yet whimsical quality about it, and we are certainly amused by how Ellis resolved the problem of X.

The top image includes original wood engravings by Ellis reprinted for inclusion in New Zealander/British rare-book dealer Michael Taylor’s review of “Fine Private Press Books of 1982,” in Matrix 3, Winter 1983, pp. 137-141, printed in November 1983 by John and Rosalind Randle at the Whittington Press in Andoversford, Gloucestershire, in an edition of 475 copies. The next set of images are taken from the artist/retired-special-collections-library-assistant blog site nelabligh.com. Unfortunately, Taylor’s review of Animal Alphabet comes as a perfunctory aside at the very end of his survey:

Well that I suppose should be the end except that something must be said about E. N. Ellis’s delightful Animal Alphabet. . . . There is a tipsy unicorn, a smug turtle, and an apposite kangaroo. . . . The engravings are printed one to a page in a small format (5 1/2 x 4 ins.) . . . . Michael Mitchell printed seventy-five copies for E. N. Ellis . . . with his usual flair and proficiency.

Scene Through Wood

Our FREE Wood Engraving exhibition in Gallery 8 has been a hit with our visitors. Have you seen it yet? ⁠ ⁠ Featuring works from our collections as well as loans from private collections, this exhibition celebrates the one hundredth anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers. ⁠ ⁠ Since its invention, wood engraving has been used for a huge variety of commercial projects ranging from tiny ex libris bookplates to book and magazine illustrations, advertising designs and even large-scale public art murals. The technique involves incising the polished end-grain surface of a block of hard wood, using sharp steel tools, before inking and printing it.⁠ ⁠ This hyper-real work by Edwina Ellis is called Pride, and was made in 1986 as part of a series called 'Five Wood Engravings on the Theme of the Maxims of the Duc de la Rochefoucauld (1615–1680)'. See it on display in 'Scene Through Wood' now. ⁠

‘Bridgerton’s Charithra Chandran To Star In Meet Cute’s ‘A Mid-Semester Night’s Dream’

EXCLUSIVE: Charithra Chandran, who plays Edwina in Netflix’s smash hit period drama Bridgerton, is to star in a rom-com podcast series.

Chandran, who also starred in Alex Rider, will lead A Mid-Semester Night’s Dream, from Meet Cute, the podcast company that specializes in rom-com stories.

The series follows a group of graduate students doing a semester on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, who discover a magical edition of the play which makes people fall in love with whoever reads from it.

It’s fall semester at Athinai State University and Mia, Lyle, Helen and Demetri are in a love square. Both Lyle and Demetri have the hots for Mia, who only has eyes for Lyle. Meanwhile, Helen continues to pine for Demetri and their now-extinguished romance. Alliances and affections are all set to change when Patrick, a TA spurned by academia and the arrogant Professor Oberman, starts wreaking havoc on the class via the magical book.

The cast also includes Rasha Zamamiri (The Blacklist), Elliott Ross (Masters of the Air), Craig First (Diabolical) and Joseph Lymous (Hello Tomorrow!).

It is written by Danielle Evenson (Whatta Lark) and Heather Huntington (Persuasion) and directed by Suha Araj (Rosa). Jenn Nielsen is associate producer and Sean Paulsen is audio producer.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of my favorite plays and Meet Cute’s modern adaptation in a college setting within the medium of podcasting makes this a really exciting and accessible project to be a part of,” said Chandran.

The series, which will launch in September, is the latest for Meet Cute, which was founded by former investment banker Naomi Shah.

Shah set up the company on Valentine’s Day in 2020 and has raised millions of dollars from the likes of Union Square Ventures and Shari Redstone’s investment firm Advancit Capital. It has produced over 450 romantic comedies as original 15-minute scripted audio episodes and has a global network of over 1,000 creators, including Pretty Little Liars author Sara Shepard, who created Cruise Ship, Dancing with the Stars’ Julianne Hough and pop star Ellie Goulding.

It also recently struck a partnership deal with Range Media Partners as well as a deal with Dickinson producer wiip.

Music I’d Like to See in Bridgerton

- I know the music has been announced for S2 but I would have liked to have seen a classical version of Ballroom Blitz by Sweet played over a montage of Kate glaring over at Anthony dancing with Edwina during various balls, and in turn he glares over anytime a man has asked Kate to dance. I’d definitely love to see this song used at some point in the series, perhaps when Francesca comes back on the Marriage Mart and Michael watches on as she is danced about the room by various gentleman, or even Hyacinth causing trouble during her balls and Gareth getting sucked into her scrapes.

- Secret Love Song by Little Mix for Benophie. It’s quintessentially them and is so fitting (though as a massive Little Mix stan I would pay good money to see any one of their songs being classically covered in the show). 

- Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore for Polin. Someone once mentioned it in the notes of a fanfic I read and I couldn’t believe it took me until then to realise just how perfect a song it is for them. It would definitely be playing at the ball following their first kiss (prior to Cressida announcing she is Whistledown). Colin walks into the ballroom and sees Penelope with Lady D and all at once he realises there’s nobody else he wants but her. 

- Eloise and Phillip’s season should be filled with music with floral titles. Build Me Up Buttercup by the Foundations, Wildflower by 5 Seconds of Summer, Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.

- For Francesca and Michael’s season I would love all of the music to be by Scottish artists. Lewis Capaldi (Your Grace), The Proclaimers (I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) - when he chases her back to Scotland), Del Amitri (Tell Her This - Julia Quinn said herself this is a Franchel song). And as it’s Michael Stirling, I’d be remiss if I didn’t want to see Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? (Rod Stewart is of Scottish heritage). 

- One Kiss by Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris for Hyacinth and Gareth. I’d also love to see some Maneskin to go hand in hand with the Italian facet of the story. 

- It would only be fitting to have Crashed the Wedding by Busted for Lucy and Gregory. Also Anything Could Happen by Ellie Goulding as the drama unfolds for the last Bridgerton find their love match.

Just chapter 15 left for the rereading + editing! Yay!

There are a couple of things, I guess:

Anthony calls Kate "his wife" in chapter 14 when talking to the doctor. I thought people would comment on it, but everyone either seemed to not notice or think it was a typo. It wasn't. In his mind he's very much married, the little dumb-dumb.

Ellie and Annie are named that way because of Elsa and Anna from Frozen. Well, Annie isn't. The Sheffields do have a maid called Annie in the books, that's why she has the bigger plot in the fic (no, it wasn't a self-insert lol). When I was thinking of a name for a second maid I might have been watching Frozen 2. Elsie was too on the nose, so Ellie.

There are bee references everywhere. Edwina is swarmed by suitors, someone is always buzzing somewhere, Benedict calls Anthony a bumblebee...

There are clues about what I think are our 2 biggest mysteries (what happened to Annie, and how does Benedict know Forbes) all over the fic.

I don't know when chapter 16 will be up, tbh. I want to write and edit it before posting it, and get a head start on 17 and outline 18 at least... So it may be a while still.
