My 90s/Y2K photos
It's kinda amusing to me that 90s and Y2K goth has become a little subgenre all of its own, because that was my era.
However, it also makes me think that there may be people out there who would enjoy seeing my old photos from this time. All these were taken in late 2000 or early 2001 when I would have been 18/19. Faces of my friends obscured since I don't know whether they'd want them shared!
Poor quality due to these being photos of physical photos originally taken with a film camera. We couldn't do millions of digital selfies to get ones we liked at that time, just had to hope for the best and wait until your film was developed...
I have no objection to these being shared, but please reblog, don't repost 😉

And here's the collaged album I keep them in, also an authentic relic from that time. Not sure what Darth Vader is doing on there. Or Cristina Scabbia come to that, I really dislike Lacuna Coil!

HELLO!
(Yes, this is me as Sarah Winchester for Halloween. Also, yes, this is pretty much my general wardrobe give or take a lace layer. Yes, I wrote a long chapter in this book about Sarah Winchester because I really love her and find her to be fundamentally misunderstood.)
I just wanted to drop by and say it's still Women's History Month and it's still a GREAT time to read about historical women and how their stories resonate with us today. BONUS: you can do this through ghost lore! Here's how!
A HAUNTED HISTORY OF INVISIBLE WOMEN: TRUE STORIES OF AMERICA'S GHOSTS examines women's history by using ghost stories; unpacking how we talk about women, alive and dead. Available wherever books are sold, in paperback, audio and digital! Retailer links here!
Word-of-mouth is so important for books like ours, so if this book interests you, could you please share? Thanks so much and Happy Haunting!

It occurred to me that I hadn't put up my deathhawk in months, and one has to stay in practice. And as long as I was at it, I thought I'd try doing my eye makeup differently. My hands shake a bit, because I'm almost 65 years old. Strange expressions because I'm trying to look at my phone screen while taking the pic.

I was loosely basing the eye makeup on insta's @coffin.goblin

hi all! i have a question! so there’s a lot of discourse on the internet lately about whether or not identifying with an alternative (i don’t like the label either, i’m just using it as an umbrella term for the different subcultures) subculture is inherently political. personally, i believe that because subcultures have deep roots in punk, post punk, and hardcore that every subculture is at least somewhat political, and furthermore that you cant be ACTUALLY alternative without also having certain morals. (anti racism, anti homophobia, feminism, etc.) subcultures are more than just music and wearing black. subcultures are a lifestyle with communities, literature, art, and yes politics. i don’t see subcultures as labels that you can just slap on yourself if you wear enough eyeliner and listen to pierce the veil or the cure. i know a good majority of “elder emos” and goths are on this app and i’d love to hear some more (and probably wiser) opinions on this, that aren’t from tiktok “alt” kids. i’d also like to apologize for my horrific run on sentences, i’m not much of a grammatically correct writer. anyways let me know what you think!

I see Goth is trending on this here site right now so I'm just going to take this opportunity to say HELLO from one of your friendly neighborhood Elder Goths (I'm 44). HI FOLKS! I'm a writer, actress and ghost tour guide! I welcome all Goth styles, shapes and sizes, Goth does NOT have to be expensive (just look for black things at thrift stores & on clearance racks like I do then mix/match), I welcome all baby bats and new Goths into our collective black-clad fold, we love you! And always remember: punch Nazis. It was a rule of all my favorite Goth clubs then and now.
(Yes, I am standing at the staircase of The Stanley Hotel, inspiration for The Shining, thank you for noticing!)
If you like my clothes, you'll like my books, I dress like I write!
More about my books here!
My shop, Torch & Arrow, here!
More about my latest non-fiction about the lives and deaths of ghostly women, A HAUNTED HISTORY OF INVISIBLE WOMEN: TRUE STORIES OF AMERICA'S GHOSTS here!
Happy Haunting!

How long have I been goth? Well these pictures are from 2004, which was my senior year in high school.
Guess it wasn't a phase, mom.
I used to nap in graveyards, read Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Novels in class, was obsessed with Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, listened to HIM and Evanescence downloaded off of Limewire (along with 30k computer viruses) I was a "Top Girl" on VampireFreaks (it was a goth/alt social media site) and I shoplifted from Hot Topic back when they sold band tees and Tripp clothing.
I made my own black prom dress with a red sash (pictured) I was (still am) obsessed with black and white stripes, I watched The Crow and Queen of the Damned practically daily, I was suspended from school for wearing a black trench coat (that was right after Columbine) I thought Johnny Depp was the hottest (didn't know yet that he was a giant piece of fucking shit) i pierced mybown ears with safety pins, and I was struggling with being Bi and Ace while raised in a Christian Cult and attempting to escape it.
The first time I got to go trick'r'treating I was 19.
I watched Buffy religiously. I memorized The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe for an English project. Wrote my history paper on the biography of JRR Tolkin. I did a presentation on the bubonic plague while wearing makeup to look like a corpse who died of the plague (I had a stuffed rat on my shoulder)
The only thing that saved me and helped me escape a doomsday cult where I was abused and self-hamred to cope, was goth culture. It literally saved my life.
This is why I will never let someone else chase off a person from the goth community just because they don't meet your fuckass criteria. (No, I'm not saying Nazis can join, you cunt)
You don't know what someone has been through, where they are coming from, what they are escaping, who they are, what they have seen, what they can give. If someone puts on some black lipstick and says they are goth, instead of chasing them off like a gatekeeping twat, welcome them in. Show them new things. Introduce them to things they don't know yet. Mold them. Befriend them. Encourage them. No one is born goth, we all discovered it one piece at a time.
Any behavior other than that makes you a piece of shit and your only redeeming quality is your mortality.
(Half of these pictures were taken on disposable cameras)

Be the Goth you needed when you were a child.
@spooky-pens has known me since I was 17 years old. We have been insane weirdos longer than half these gatekeepers have been alive. No one gets to decide if someone is goth except that person themselves. (Except nazis. Fuck nazis. With a crowbar)
