My May, June, July, & August Reads

Prairie, Dresses, Art, Other, Danielle Dutton - I put this on hold because 1) I love Dutton's novel, Margaret the First, and 2) the cover art is so different and so great. I really enjoyed the experience of reading PDAO; it made me feel smart, like I was back in school. That said, I also had to skim some of the "Art" section because it went over my head. I was most engrossed by the short stories in "Prairie" and the collection of literary dress quotes in "Dresses." In a fun coincidence, I had just started reading Lolly Willowes, and one of the dress quotes is pulled from that novel. Keep doing you, Danielle Dutton—I love your weird brain.

Lolly Willowes: or, The Loving Huntsman, Sylvia Townsend Warner - Another book I picked up because 1) I enjoyed a different novel by the author (in this case, Warner's Black Death nun book, The Corner That Held Them) and 2) the cover art called to me (in this case, witches flying on brooms across a hideous yellow background). Lolly Willowes is a wild ride—it was the first-ever book selected by the Book of the Month Club!—and yes, there are witches.

Beautyland, Marie-Helene Bertino - It took me longer than expected to get invested in this, for which I blame my tragic attention span, but I was hooked as soon as the protagonist started her high school years. A beautiful character, the most beautiful writing, and of course I cried buckets.

The Alternatives, Caoilinn Hughes - A novel about four sisters! Set in Ireland! It's funny and cynical! Unfortunately it lost my interest for a hot second 3/4 of the way through, but the insane ending saved the day.

Any Person Is the Only Self: Essays, Elisa Gabbert - An all-time favorite. If reading is central to your identity, you must get this book.

Grief Is for People, Sloane Crosley - I will think about the Grand Central Station scene forever. Yes, this book is very sad, but also there's a lot of publishing industry gossip. After you read it, I highly recommend listening to her interview on the Longform podcast.

Tom Lake, Ann Patchett - Some people, including people I know, did not enjoy this novel, and I simply can't relate. I loved every page, every character, every relationship, the Michigan setting, learning about the play Our Town and sewing and harvesting cherries. I loved it so much that I'm going to see Our Town on Broadway next month; Katie Holmes is playing Mrs. Webb and my first thought was, "Wow.....Joey Potter aged out of playing Emily, we are all so old." Thank you, Ann Patchett!

Willow was a LOT of fun~ I re-watched the movie last week, after having not seen it since I was a child. I had hoped heading into the series that they'd keep the feel of the movie. And to me, they did just that, while also expanding things in good ways.

I do hope people enjoy this~ I found the first two episodes to be engaging, and I am LOVING the cast. Am really excited to see where we go from here~!

I'm launching operation Make Luna a Love Interest. WLW deserve better than the crumbs that Fusebox has been throwing our way for the past four seasons. WoC deserve better than another Hope/Arlo/Willow. Straight players can romance almost every single male character and they know what routes they'd be able to unlock as the story progresses. LGBT players shouldn't have to guess whether a female character is an endgame LI or not. The least FB can do for us is to tell us which female characters can't be romanced the way they did with Seb and Nicky. I'd invite everyone who wants to join to bombard Fusebox with Luna love under their Instagram and twitter posts. I'd appreciate any support from straight allies. I know black female characters don't get as much fan support, but I hope I can get a shout from the accounts that I stan.

But no, I totally get you, love, us queer players are fighting for our life here because wlw routes are basically an afterthought. Women li’s don’t have any distinct personality from the men li’s - all that changes is just the sprite, basically. Fusebox hasn’t had a good wlw route since Angie imo, and even then, why are these routes blocked by some weird machinations we have to do while picking which choices we want mc to say? Like, I legit didn’t know Elisa was an li because I never unlocked her route. And yes, characters of color are continuously being made as villains, which just makes me UGHH GRRRR FLAMES FLAMES ON THE SIDE OF MY HEAD😫😞

I got so excited when they revealed Luna because she is one of the most beautiful islanders they’ve ever released imho😍 but based in her application I knew she’d 99% would be straight. She’s already gone from my game because I went for Jin and she had close to no personality which is also very sad and frustrating - they just made her a placeholder...

I completely agree with your points and I would love fusebox to do better, but I genuinely don’t think they’d listen. Personally, I’m a little burnt out with them never listening to our criticisms/reading survey responses/giving the fans what they want. Season after season after season it’s the same thing over and over again. They take some feedback in from the players, but let’s not forget how they made a discord to “keep in touch with their fans” and then when s5 ended and people had THOUGHTS they deleted it lol. Sadly, they’re just a company looking for an easy cash grab:( That’s just my, albeit pessimistic opinion, but if any of you do wanna bombard their social media - please do. I’ll be over here cheering you on and doing my part by mayhaps fixing the poorly written characters in my fics💕

Who would you say is the most irrelevant character from each season?

season 1 — i think a lot of people would say sammi, but i think it’s a bit of a cop out as she only appears on a talia route. imo lucy is the most irrelevant. she’s only there for like two/three days and the plotline with her ex is resolved pretty much straight away.

season 2 — elisa. unless you’re on her route she’s basically a placeholder for whoever is single.

season 3 — miki?

season 4 — tiffany, closely followed by tom (sorry to my tom girlies out there)
