Not Wanted, Ida Lupino's first feature as director, begins well (after a gratuitous assertion of the film's moral intentions in a title card), with Sally Kelton (Sally Forrest) trudging uphill toward the camera, a glazed look in her eyes, until she reaches the top, where an infant has been left in a carriage outside a shop. It gurgles and coos at her and Sally can't resist: She picks up the baby and walks away with it, only to be accosted by the mother who calls the cops and has her arrested. In jail, where Sally is thrown in with some tough-looking dames (there's a rather clichéd touch of predatory lesbianism here), she looks at the camera and begins to ponder what brought her to this moment. Cue flashback. The sequence is handled deftly, and we can only assume that it was directed by Lupino instead of the credited Elmer Clifton, who suffered a heart attack three days into shooting the film. Lupino, who was the producer, took over for the rest, but declined credit because she wasn't yet a member of the Directors Guild. The movie also ends well, with an exciting chase sequence in which a guilt-ridden Sally runs from the man who loves her, Drew Baxter (Keefe Brasselle), climbing steps to a bridge that crosses the railroad tracks and at one point threatening to leap onto the tracks below. Only when Drew collapses -- he's a World War II veteran with a prosthetic leg and has struggled to follow her -- does Sally turn and go to him for the inevitable happy ending. What comes between these scenes is often less impressive: a tear-drenched story about a young woman who falls for the wrong man (a musician, of course), gets pregnant, has the baby and gives it up for adoption, and suffers from self-loathing and remorse. To appreciate it we have to remember what was deemed possible for American filmmakers under the Production Code, as well as what was deemed possible for American women of the era. Even within the confines of the "problem picture" compromises, Lupino provides some interesting touches, such as the giddy, speeded-up carousel in the background when when Sally faints -- a sure indication for anyone familiar with movie pregnancy clichés that she's going to have a baby -- and the subjective camera that takes over during Sally's Demerol-numbed labor and delivery. Lupino's ability to think originally even when the material lacks originality is one of her strengths as a director.

Huggins soon discovered that his new pile of reels included 1923’s The Pill Pounder, a silent comedy that had been thought to be lost for decades. It is a short, two-reel film, shot in Long Island, New York, and directed by Gregory La Cava, best known for later classics such as My Man Godfrey (1936) and Stage Door (1937). The film stars rubber-faced vaudeville veteran Charlie Murray, the so-called “Irish comedian” who was actually from Laurel, Indiana. He plays a hapless pharmacist, the “pill pounder” of the title, who is trying to host a clandestine poker game in the back room of his drugstore. What few realised until Huggins watched the film, was that it also features 17-year-old Bow in a supporting role. She plays the girlfriend of Murray’s son, played by James Turfler, who had already appeared with Bow in her second film Down to the Sea in Ships, directed by Elmer Clifton and screened in 1922. Turfler’s character is the butt of some bizarre gags. At one point, he chugs a jug of effervescent “fomo seltzer” and Bow watches in horror as he floats up to the ceiling.

After attending a lecture on "Maritime History and Hollyood" a few weeks ago, I decided to undertake a quest, and watch a series of highly rated maritime films as recommended by the guest lecturer, and this 1922 silent romance is the first on that list.

Charles Morgan (Walcott) is a Quaker leader and retired whale ship captain in New Bedford, MA, whose life has been shattered by the loss of his son in a shipwreck. He pins what few hopes he has left on the shoulders of his daughter, Patience (Courtot), admonishing her to do the family proud, and "marry a Quaker whaleman!"

Unfortunately for Pops, Patience has fallen in love with the boy next door, Allan Dexter (McKee), newly returned home after graduating from college.

When Dexter's request to marry Patience is rejected (he is neither a Quaker nor a whaleman), the despondent suitor heads to a local tavern to drown his sorrows. But this is a busy port city in the 1800s, and as so often happened to single drinkers, Dexter is immediately shanghai'd: drugged unconscious and dumped aboard an outbound whale ship.

Alas, this is no coincidence! It turns out the villainous Samuel Siggs (Baston), hoping to claw his way to success and wealth (and we'll ignore the wildly racist fact that Siggs is supposed to be a "yellow" Asian passing himself off as a respectable white businessman), has ingratiated himself into the Morgan household. First, by tricking old man Charles into hiring him as an accountant, and now, he has his sights set on claiming Morgan's wealth for himself by marrying Patience. When Siggs sees she is not at all interested, he orchestrates Dexter's kidnapping, and then leads Patience to believe her true love "ran away out west." Problem solved!

Or is it? Patience's true love may be gone, but she still has no desire to marry Siggs, and besides, this is a romance. We can't leave it at that. Dexter adapts amazingly well to whaleship life, quickly climbing the ranks on his vessel and proving his skill as a seaman, but his success is short-lived as he soons finds himself caught up in a mutiny plot.

Meanwhile, Charles Morgan's wild and precocious granddaughter, Dot (a very young Clara Bow), wants to become a whaleman herself, so she stows away on the same vessel Dexter found himself on!

How will it all end? What happens when the crew of Dexter's ship finds a teenage girl on board? Will Patience have to marry Siggs, or will her true love arrive home in time? And will Dexter even survive, facing the untold dangers of a mutinous crew and hunting sperm whales in the North Atlantic?

Down to the Sea in Ships is a remarkable technical achievement. I don't want to think about how many whales and dolphins were likely hurt or killed to make this movie, but I can appreciate the skill it took to film a cast at sea with no CGI or green screen. And there were some truly gripping sequences, especially aboard the unnamed whaleship.

The cast was great, notably Clara Bow, who killed it in every scene, and the story was fun. I'd give this one a 3 out of 3 masts!

Is it an overstatement to say that the stench of The Birth of a Nation is more than a subset of the blight cast on American society and politics by slavery? Because Griffith's film informed an entire industry, not only with its undeniable influence on the language and grammar of film, but also in the tendency to valorize bigness above intimacy, action over thought, sensation over understanding that has characterized the mainstream of American movies. It was the first blockbuster. It was both intelligently crafted and abominably stupid. It just might be the most pernicious work of art ever made, a magnificent nauseating lie. Its portrait of Reconstruction warped the teaching of history for generations, and although the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan that it inspired has waned, we still find ourselves swatting down the heirs of the Klan like the Proud Boys, the Promise Keepers, and others who would defend what one of Griffith's title cards calls the "Aryan birthright." Even the reaction against The Birth of a Nation has its dark side: The recognition of the power of movies that followed its release eventually produced calls for censorship that would hamstring the medium. On the right, a suspicion that movies had the power to promote a leftist agenda led to the blacklist era, in which communists, not racists, were the target. And what is the crusade by some against "wokeness" in the media but another call for the kind of ideological purity that would stifle art? So to call The Birth of a Nation an essential film is an understatement. Looking at it as a demonstration of the ability of cinema to profoundly affect society could reveal it to be the most important movie ever made.

Assassin of Youth (1938)

My rating: 4/10

So yeah, this is another one of those weird-ass anti weed propaganda movies they had back then. The utter cluelessness about the effects of the devil's lettuce is kind of funny, and this one actually tries to have a plot beyond "weed bad, makes you stab people", which makes it marginally more watchable. Also the evil neighbor from Wizard of Oz is there, for some reason.
