I really like Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons, but this, film not so much. It was way too long and I just wasn’t feeling very invested in the characters or the story. Elmer Gantry received three Oscars, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Writing-Adapted Screenplay.

Wir fangen mal mit den Bibelschinken im weitesten Sinne an. Elmer Gantry ist für die Zeltmission, was Professor Harold Hill für die Blaskapelle ist, nur nicht so lustig, und Shirley Jones ist diesmal auch nicht ganz so von seinen Methoden überzeugt. Man kommt nicht dahinter, ob er wirklich glaubt, was er predigt, es ihm nur mehr Spaß macht als seine bisherige Tätigkeit als Staubsaugervertreter oder ob er doch bloß auf die Missionarin (die in ihrer Missionstätigkeit hier deutlich erfolgreichere als sonst, hinreißende Jean Simmons) scharf ist, mit der er ein fabelhaft erfolgreiches Good Priest/Bad Priest-Konzept entwickelt: So Er: "Ihr seid alle verdammt!", Sie: "Aber werdet erlöst!" Merke außerdem: Gottvertrauen ist gut, ersetzt aber nicht die Einhaltung von Brandschutzmaßnahmen. Ich hatte den Eindruck, es sei ein guter Film, aber ich kann Ihnen nicht sagen, warum.
