Good design is economical. That is, it maximizes the use of whatever resources it employs - nothing is wasted. Francis Kéré, from Burkina Faso, uses traditional architectural archetypes from his home village in order to build beautiful, useful, and sustainable buildings.

This is Francis Kéré, an architect from Burkina Faso and at least in my eyes, the patron saint of "afro solar punk". He builds using local, sustainable materials, and uses the education he received in Germany to improve on traditional methods already known. His first project was a school in his home village, built to enable other children to receive an education like he once was. The school has a self-cooling mechanism that does not require AC and was built cost effectively together with the community. This year he won the Pritzker Prize. You know what, just watch his TED Talk, I highly recommend it.

A subject that is close to my heart and weighing heavily on my mind. With my wife being pregnant with our first child, we are appalled with all that we have been learning about where the United States lands in the worldwide rankings (49th) for maternal mortality ratios.
How can we apply design thinking to address the issue of infant and maternal mortality rates in the United States?

Ameliorating the cluttered sink problem at breakfast time is design leadership. Eggs, bacon, sausage, and hashbrowns prepared in the same pan. How easy is that? 😁
The multi-compartment grill pan is an example of design leadership because each compartment was intentionally designed to add flexibility to multi-component food preparations like breakfast. The compartments are specialized for different breakfast components such as eggs and meats. I imagine an exquisite level of prototyping had to occur when designing the placement of the compartments to strategically facilitate heat distribution. I’ve had great luck with the pan, and now I totally should be asking for a cut of their profits for marketing it this hard!

16. have you ever had sex in a public place?
Danny was a little surprised by the question, but only for about half a second. He had found his reputation tended to precede him. So he just raised an eyebrow and replied, "Yeah, I have. Why do you ask? You lookin'?"

Catching him {closed rp for empatheticdesign}
Lexi sat on a swivel chair in the main room of the forensics ward, looking through papers about the recent deaths.
She had been trying to find out if what her colleague Will had said about the Chesapeake Ripper being Hannibal Lecter was true. Nobody else believed him but her. Will and Lexi had only worked together in a few cases, but they had a sort of bond that she enjoyed, they worked well together. When Will had mentioned that it might have been Hannibal she didn’t take in any interest at first, but then she saw him doing certain things that he wouldn’t usually do, so she thought that she might look into the idea. She opened another file, taking a sip from her coffee on the desk next to her.

I tend to focus my efforts on making people better, either through wellness or through career development. One particular wicked design problem that I encounter is designing programs to alleviate the bottleneck between eager science graduates and job opportunities. This means that programs have to be created to align the skills of science graduates with the needs of employers. However academic culture doesn’t always facilitate the training of academic scientists in a way that leads to the development of workforce-ready skills (ie skills you can readily use outside of academia). This is where design is different from creativity. Design leverages creativity to come up with solutions that integrate incentive structures. I’m currently working on designing a program that does just that. Stay tuned!

The value is in empathy for the end user. How well can you relate to the people using the gadgets/technology? These founders just got paid exactly for that.
The news today that Google is buying smart thermostat-maker Nest for $3.5 billion seemed slightly unhinged; why overbid for what's still, at present, a niche product? The answer is so simple it's barely worth a shrug: because it can, because it needs to, and because if it didn't, someone else would have.
