Who in Aespa is Wonbin attracted to?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just to remind you, this tarot reading is for entertainment purposes only. Ultimately, RIIZE's member's real-life feelings remain unknown. Take it with a grain of salt and please, don't take this post seriously!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This post is an explanation and elaboration on the post 'Most to Least (MTL) attracted to: RIIZE → Aespa' that you can find on my page.
Tumblr media
Most to least attracted to:
「 ✦ Winter ✦ 」
Cards: five of cups and the hermit reversed
Wonbin finds Winter attractive. He thinks she’s talented and visually appealing. But initial disappointment or shyness held him back from getting to know her. The cards also tells me he doesn’t have romantic feelings towards her, but might be interested in getting to know her and become friends with her. It looks like he tried to approach her, but was hesitant to talk to her because of his shyness.
To Wonbin, Winter might come across as melancholic or reserved at first. However, "The Hermit Reversed" suggests a desire for connection. Perhaps Wonbin sees a potential for a deeper bond with Winter if she opens up more.
I place her first because he seems to be more attracted to her for some reason. But Winter’s quietness makes it hard for him to get closer. So, imagine two introverts getting to know each other. It will take some time for them to get used to each other.
「 ✦ Karina ✦ 」
Cards: temperance and wheel of fortune
Karina is Wonbin’s manic pixie girl. He thinks she’s a fun person but also unpredictable. Yet he admires her ability to juggle her idol and private life. This aspect attracts him towards her. He would like to know how she does it.
Temperance suggests balance, moderation, and finding a middle ground. In a scenario, this could mean Karina balances her powerful stage presence with a calm and collected demeanor, which Wonbin finds attractive. The Wheel of Fortune signifies change and new beginnings, hinting that a connection with Karina could bring unexpected but exciting developments to their connection.
「 ✦ Giselle ✦ 」
Cards: the empress and three of wands
I’d like to point out that not once, not twice, but thrice. Three RIIZE members thinks she’s attractive. I haven’t yet revealed the rest of the members. But Sungchan, Eunseok, and now Wonbin thinks she’s attractive. Sungchan at some point wanted to get closer but Giselle was too hard to get. Eunseok wanted to know her but Giselle’s head was in the clouds. Now, Wonbin thinks she has qualities that he likes in her and wants to know about her more, but guess what? Giselle is too busy thinking about herself. So, I put her in third place.
But I digress.
Anyway. Wonbin might admire Giselle's confidence and go-getter attitude, as shown by the Empress and Three of Wands. He might be drawn to her creative energy and her adventurous spirit. Wonbin also thinks Giselle’s ambition is charismatic, seeing her as a partner who could push him to achieve his goals. Another quality of hers that allure him is her outgoing personality and exciting attitude.
That’s all, Nori? Yes. I doubt Wonbin even talks to her or tried to get to know her. He has an idea of what she is like but she’s a total stranger to him.
「 ✦ Ningning ✦ 」
Cards: six of pentacles rx and strength
Six of Pentacles Reversed" indicates imbalance or a lack of reciprocity in giving and receiving. Ningning might come across as someone who is guarded with her emotions or hesitant to give freely. However, "Strength" suggests inner power and resilience. The reversed Six of Pentacles might also indicate Wonbin finds Ningning's energy a bit self-centered at times. However, Ningning's strong personality might still intrigue Wonbin, but the reversed card suggests he might find her emotionally unavailable at first.
I’m sorry to destroy your delusions guys. There is nothing going on between them. Please lower your expectations.
Overall:
Based on the cards, Giselle and Karina seem like the most likely matches for Wonbin. Giselle's charisma and ambition might resonate with him, while Karina's balancing influence and intriguing unpredictability could be attractive.
The cards for Winter and Ningning suggest a slower burn or a need for Wonbin to invest more effort. Winter's initial reservedness and Ningning's potential emotional guardedness might make them less immediately appealing.

AN UNIQUE LOVE
Tumblr media
Mako Komuro (小室 眞子, Komuro Mako, born 23 October 1991), formerly Princess Mako of Akishino (眞子内親王, Mako Naishinnō), is a former member of the Japanese imperial family. She is the eldest child of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, niece of Emperor Naruhito, and granddaughter of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko. After marrying outside the imperial family in October 2021, she gave up her title as required by the Imperial Household Law.
Before Marriage:
Before this marriage former princess mako komuro was a researcher at The University Museum, The University of Tokyo.
And the love for which former princess mako komuro had to give up the title of member of imperial household
Mako Komuro was born Princess Mako of Akishino on 23 October 1991 to Fumihito, Prince Akishino, and Kiko, Princess Akishino, at Imperial Household Agency Hospital in Tokyo Imperial Palace, Chiyoda, Tokyo. She has a younger sister, Princess Kako, and a younger brother, Prince Hisahito. Mako was educated at the Gakushūin School in her Primary, Girls' Junior and Senior High School years. She studied English at University College, Dublin (UCD), in July–August 2010.she had an informal talk with the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, and she visited Northern Ireland.
The Princess graduated from the International Christian University in Mitaka, Tokyo, on 26 March 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Art and Cultural Heritage. She obtained Japanese national certification in curation as well as a driver's license while she was an undergraduate student. She later studied art history at the University of Edinburgh for nine months, from September 2012 to May 2013.On 17 September 2014, she left for the United Kingdom where she studied at the University of Leicester for a year, receiving an MA degree in Art Museum and Gallery Studies on 21 January 2016. In September 2016, she enrolled in the doctoral course of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, International Christian University
TITLE AND MARRIAGE
Mako was styled as Her Imperial Highness Princess Mako until her marriage on 26 October 2021, after which she became known as Mrs. Mako Komuro.
In May 2017, it was announced that the Princess was expected to marry Kei Komuro. The two had met while both students at International Christian University (ICU), and he had proposed to her in December 2013.
The wedding was originally expected to take place in November 2018, but it was postponed after media reports of Komuro's mother's financial dispute with her former fiancé over ¥4 million ($36,000). Some of the money had been used to pay Komuro's tuition fees, and the dispute resulted in the public's disapproval of the match. Komuro stated that his mother initially believed the money was a gift and added that he wished to pay it back. Princess Mako blamed the postponement on the couple's immaturity at that time.
On 26 October 2021, Princess Mako officially married Komuro following the submission of their marriage document at the local ward office. Like her paternal aunt, Sayako, Princess Nori, and other princesses who married commoners in recent decades she formally lost her title and became a commoner upon marriage as required by Imperial Household Law. In light of the scandals surrounding her husband's family, she also refused the Japanese government's taxpayer funded payment of ¥140 million (US$1.3 million) given to royal women upon leaving the Imperial Family. She is the first female member of the imperial family to forgo an official wedding ceremony and a gift of money from the government.
While awaiting her passport issuance and US Visa, Mako moved to her own residence in the Shibuya district in Tokyo as she is by law not allowed to live at her parents' house inside the imperial quarters. Kei resolved the financial dispute between his mother and her ex-fiancé in November 2021, paying the ex-fiancé an undisclosed sum of money to resolve the debt. The couple departed for New York in mid-November 2021.
Kei Komuro began studying at Fordham University School of Law in August 2018 and graduated with a Juris Doctor in May 2021. He later joined Lowenstein Sandler, a law firm in New York as a law clerk. He passed New York's bar exam in October 2022 and began working as a lawyer in 2023.
This prove that love is really blind and you don't think about to leave other things if you truly love someone...

Japanese Imperial Tiaras
I’ll be featuring a lot of Japanese tiaras in the lead up to the Enthronement Ceremony on October 22nd so I wanted to talk a bit about how tiaras work in the Japanese Imperial Family.
When a princess turns twenty years old or marries into the family, she receives a parure of jewels including a tiara for her to use at any white tie events.  The parures are always made out of only white jewels meaning diamonds and sometimes pearls.  White has special meaning in Japan and you will also she them wear mostly white gowns to formal events and special ceremonies.  They do wear other, more colorful gemstones to less formal events.
Tumblr media
The parures are not actually owned by the princesses instead they are owned by the Imperial Household Agency.  Whenever the princess marries out of the family or passes away the parure goes back to the IHA.  This is actually pretty similar to how Queen Elizabeth II loans out jewels on a long term basis and then the jewels come back to her or whoever is the monarch at the time.
The designs for the parures are chosen using a bidding process.  Japanese jewelers send in their designs and the winner is chosen from by a panel of experts with the princess’s ‘input.’  It’s clear that the further from the throne the princess is the more input they are allowed.  The Akishino princesses parures are very symmetrical and heavily mirrored whereas the Takamado princesses parures feature lovely asymmetrical, naturalistic designs.  The price for each parure is released publicly, something that would never happen in a European monarchy.
Some princesses, particularly the older ones, have more than one tiara.  Partially, this is because they have had more time to build up more tiaras and partially I think they are probably just a bit more careful of spending so much money these days.  For example, Princess Takamado has her wedding tiara, a second diamond bandeau tiara, and the Mikasa Pearl Drop Tiara from her mother-in-law, who doesn’t attend tiara events anymore.  The prices and jeweler of this extra jewelry are not public like their initial parure.  It’s also not clear which of their other jewelry is owned by the IHA or privately owned.
Tumblr media
Empress Masako was a bit of a special case because she did not get a new parure made for her, instead her mother-in-law passed down her Scroll Parure and later the Sunburst Parure.  As you may know, my favorite thing is to track tiaras through generations so I absolutely loved this.  The Scroll Parure has now been passed to Princess Akishino cementing it’s status as the Crown Princess Parure but I hope that the Sunburst Parure stays with the new Empress Masako as her third tiara because I think it looks amazing on her and it makes her look like the Japanese sun goddess, Amaterasu.  Her first two tiaras will be the Meiji Scroll Tiara and the Imperial Chrysanthemum Tiara which are reserved for the empress.
So what happens to the parures after they go back to the IHA?  Well, that’s a bit of a mystery, again just like in the UK there are probably a lot of older pieces just sitting in a vault somewhere but occasionally we do see pieces show up on new wearers.  Princess Chichibu’s Honeysuckle Tiara reappeared on Empress Michito and her pearl necklace is now worn by Empress Masako.  A brooch that belonged to Empress Kojun just reappeared on Princess Mako.  I’d really love to see Princess Takamatsu’s Floral Palmette Tiara worn by a new princess.  There are rumors that older pieces are used to make new parures but there’s never been confirmation of that.  Princess Nori’s Diamond Tiara in particular is thought to be a remodeled version of an older tiara.
Tumblr media
I know people get upset by the princesses having to give back their tiaras but the Japanese system is really not that different from how things work in other countries.  People would never expect QEII to give the Greville Emerald Tiara to Princess Eugenie as hers to keep.  They know that the parure is only theirs to use while they were working for the family and they receive a large sum of money from the Japanese government when they stop, much more than the parure would be worth.  They are also not completely cut off from their relatives.  Emperor Akihito’s only daughter, Sayako Kuroda (the former Princess Nori) is now the Supreme Priestess of the Ise Grand Shrine and she still attends more family oriented events like those honoring her parents.  I’ve even spotted her a two state banquets but she no longer sits at the head table or wears a tiara.
I could keep going but I’ve rambled long enough.  Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll try to answer them as best as I can.

Hiya! I don’t have money right now, but I’ll be sure to reblog your post 🥰 for the free readings though- My initials are A.L.P., my sun is Capricorn, and, oh dear, I can’t pick a favorite but one I’ve been listening to a lot recently is Flowers by inlovewithaghost ft. Nori🌹 Last year I asked quite a few readings about school, so, to celebrate the new year, I’d like to ask what I should focus on in terms of personal growth? Thank you so much! I hope the world is kind to you 🌱🌙
Hi A.L.P!😄 Happy New Year!✨
I appreciate that, thank you!!✨💛 I looove this song, it’s going in my playlist for sure! It’s so cute and whimsical, thank you for sharing!!💛
I pulled the 3 of Swords, The Hierophant, The Empress, and the Knight of Swords!✨
Immediately when pulling the 3 of Swords, I feel one important piece of your self-growth for this year is surrounding letting go of people who do not positively add to your life!✨ Be careful where you are putting energy and try not to get dragged into drama, I do not know if this was something that occurred in the past but please be mindful of your personal boundaries and don’t be afraid to communicate your needs to loved ones!✨💛
With the Knight of Swords, I am feeling a need to stay true to your emotional and feelings!💛This also makes me feel the need to say try to have time to yourself and to release any negative energy! I’m feeling you are a strong empath which is beautiful but also can be draining on your personal energy- try to do more of what helps you release pent up energy especially if you feel it is not yours!✨
I am not sure of how you identify as gender is a spectrum but either way ahhh with the Empress and Hierophant- this is powerful feminine energy coming through!💛😄 Not only do these cards encourage us to walk in our power, they also encourage us to take chances, be bold, and nurture ourselves in the process!✨ A.L.P. What makes you feel powerful in the way you dress? For some reason I want to encourage you to express yourself in the ways you really want to through your hair and how you dress— don’t fear being judged or something not fitting your body, etc.— there’s something that boosts confidence when we feel we look good and are genuine to our unique styles!✨
Try to get more outside of your comfort zone, try new things, and being open to learning and experiencing! Also follow your intuition!!✨ I am feeling this year is going to be one of intense personal discovery and exploration for you and I hope this reading helps! Sending you so much love and good energy; be your beautiful self!!💛

“Dark Side” (Zekk + Jaina Solo)
Tumblr media
The collar around Zekk’s neck was stiff and uncomfortable. The Imperial Shadow Academy’s recycled air made him yearn for the perfume of Yavin IV’s fresh jungle air, though he didn’t mind the lack of humidity.
“Everything Okay, Boss?” His friend hissed.
“We’ve been over this, Nor,” Zekk whispered, “You don’t have to call me ‘Boss’.”
“Well, Brakiss said you’re the Boss, so you’re the Boss, Boss.
“Besides, you didn’t want to come up with codenames, so I gotta call you something.”
“It’s not like we have secret identities. The Empire doesn’t even know we exist, our names would mean nothing to them,” Zekk reminded Norys somewhat cynically.
Zekk juggled the control chip for a moment, tossing it and catching it again. Brakiss had given it to him. Brakiss had entrusted Zekk and Norys, the former Coruscaunti scavengers, with this mission. To place the chip in the Shadow Academy’s communication systems so that the Rebellion could listen in and be on the alert. They would know when the Academy planned to raid another system for force-sensitives for Lord Vader’s army, or attack another planet and enslave its sentients for resources. Imperial headquarters may be on Coruscaunt, but everything went through their top-secret floating base. It had take the Rebellion decades to learn of this place, Zekk hoped it would still take a few more years for Lord Vader and his elusive Empress to discover that the Jedi existed too.
“Although,” He said, after a few more minutes of patrolling in silence, listening for any nearby activity, “if we do get caught, we won’t want them to know who’s in charge. Maybe I should be calling you “Boss” instead, to throw ‘em off.”
“That works.” Norys was suspiciously quick to agree after all the teasing he’d just put Zekk through.
“Then they’ll kill you to cut off all the lose ends and keep me alive for the information.”
“Ha, ha.”
“Hello.”
Zekk was caught by surprise before he could give Norys a well-meaning jab in the shoulder. He snapped to attention, along with Norys, in their brand-new stormtrooper armor, and took in their surprise.
It was a brown-haired woman about their height. Her suit was completely black and resembled the insulated suits worn beneath the stormtrooper armor Zekk had been given, though it bore no medals like most of the instructors Zekk had seen who dressed that way. The only defining characteristic of her clothing was the empire’s insignia, carved into her metal belt buckle.
“I have never seen you before. Are you new?” Her accent was Coruscaunt, there was no mistaking it, but her basic lacked the casual dialect spoken by the underlevel thugs like Zekk, Norys, and their Lost Ones friends. Raised on the upper levels then.
She took a step forward, peering closer at both of them, but the brunt of her question seemed to be directed at Zekk.
Zekk himself did his best not to panic.
“We’re new recruits, ma’am. Just signed in this morning.”
Their surprise woman smiled slyly, a lopsided grin slowly crawling into her eyes. “You don’t know who I am, do you?”
Zekk briefly glanced at Norys.
“Should we?” His voice squeaked at the end of his sentence. Norys gulped visibly, and though his gasping breaths grew louder, the enigmatic woman’s gaze remained focused solely on Zekk.
“Call me Jaina,” She finally held out her hand to Zekk, not answering his question.
“ZK-421, at your service.” Zekk saluted her the moment she released his hand.
Jaina barked a laugh, “And what about your real name?”
“Oh! Uh, Zekk.” He stammered, “and my friend here is Norys, designation NY-213.”
“Ma’am.” Norys snapped to attention.
Jaina didn’t laugh this time, but she grinned and shouldered her way between the two young men, continuing down the hall as if this interaction had never occurred.
“Huh,” Zekk mumbled. Norys opened his mouth to whisper something crude to Zekk, but Jaina’s voice sang out down the hall, capturing the attention of at least three other new recruits, and a uniformed officer relaying their instructions.
“I certainly hope to see you again, Zekk. And your little friend, too.”

FIRST: Alternia or Beforus or some type of AU? Alternia with a different empress
Name (preferably include how you came up with it and why): Alcero Tonori - Alcira after the Latin name for Moose, Alces Alces, and Tonori is from the word Tone for her love of music and the seaweed wrap Nori for her distaste of seadwellers.
(We love that for her!)
Age: 10 Sweeps
(I’m going to assume that this is a AU rule where Trolls aren’t kicked offworld until they’re older now.)
Strife Specibus: Wrapkind - She uses her Mic cord or anything ropelike to restrain or choke her foes. (You could rename this to “Ropekind” if it suit your fancy, but a covert Bronzeblood using ropes and lassos is the right kind of fitting that I like.)
Fetch Modus: Tunerbomb Modus - Each item is assigned a musical note. She must sing that note to retrieve it. If she gives up or runs out of time, the item detonates.
(I love this whole motif for this character, especially because of the phrase I used to use “I sing like a moose”, which makes this whole character feel especially funny. I like the idea that she just… gives up and lets her items explode because she’s sick of fishing for the right intonation).
Blood color: Unknown (Bronze)
(With Horns like that and a Symbol like that, I think a lot of people are gonna suss out that she’s a Bronzie just by looking at her. Which does fit her whole character, really.)
Symbol and meaning: Loosely resembles antlers
(I like this one a lot because it really fits the Bronze Symbol Language, especially with the center circle that’s so pivotal to their entire visual dictionary!)
Trolltag: finetunePleb [FP]
Quirk: FP: SHE SPEAKS LOUDLY AND HAS KIND OF A PROBL##!=/$$/M WITH RUN ON SENT#/$:!;$=NCES AND STUFF LIKE TH!#//$T AND SOMETIMES SHE PRESS!=/:$S
FP: SEND TOO EARLY AND KIND OF BREAKS OFF HER SENTENCES
FP: SOMETIMES WHEN TRYING TO INTERJECT SYMB!!@=;9//LS INTO HER WORDS LIKE STATIC SHE ACCID@!//$;ntally turns off her caps lock
(I worry that this is difficult to scan, but you later note that she struggles to express herself, so that seems to be intentional? In any case, it’s highly realistic.)
Special Abilities (if any): None
(Bronzebloods canonically can have kinship and psychic powers with Lusii! She doesn’t really require them, but she could have them!)
Lusus: A large moose twice her height with strange clawed hooves and an appetite for insects.
(Love it. I have dubbed them… The MunchFriend.)
Personality: Alcero is an outspoken rebel that’s a bit too naive. She’s the lead singer of a hemoanon band called the Mythbloods. She has trouble keeping thoughts to herself but has similar trouble expressing them accurately, and so has a tendency to drone on and on. Despite her position as a rebellious band leader, she’s never been extraordinarily bright and has her bandmates handle the songwriting.
She doesn’t seem to fully grasp the gravity of what she’s doing, and is just following where her band takes her. She is hemorebellious in belief, but unlike her bandmates it’s more of a fun and games stance rather than a hill she would die on.
Interests: Wildlife, Singing, Attention
(”Attention”. Oh honey, sweet summer child. That’s only gonna end in heartbreak. I like giving her singing as a genuine interest, as it intersects with her communication issues. Does she find that using verasimo and communication emotion to tone helps? She might not write the words, but the sound that comes out of her throat is all hers.)
Title: The Maid of Heart
(I originally was going to suggest another Classpect for her, but it dawned on me midway through that she really is a very dysfunctional Heart player. Her struggle is with the Mind-Heart Inversion. She can’t communicate her true self, nor does she have a ton of control over the perception of it, making her also doubt and have a less firm idea of just what her true self actually is.  Maids often give up control to those around them, which detrimentally affects their development as well as the group’s. Her giving up the reins of her band’s lyrics could be an easy representation of that.  But then, I have to ask: Just what is her true self? What is the planned narrative arc for this character? What does she do in the plot? Is she there to tone down her friends and make them less prone to anti-authoritarian punk rock? Is she supposed to learn that she really does believe in all of this when it comes down to it, but she was running from the responsibility belief put on her shoulders?)
Land: Land of Seafoam and Empathy [LOSAE]
Dream Planet: Prospit
(If there’s any character that’s a Prospit Dreamer, it’s this one.) (This was a lovely character to review! All of my recommendations were really just reinforcing what you already had haha.) -(SA)

quick p5 verse deets before i forget, and so i can make it official in the verses page:
overview: afton and company were originally from the kyoto prefecture, where renji was actually the first one to find the metaverse navigator on his phone. this was due to the horrific nature of his uncle’s experiments - unfortunately, it was all too late, as naoko, fahy and the others were still victims of the experiments laid out by the corporation.
through sheer luck, willpower and teamwork, this group of rogue thieves found the secrets of nori’s twisted desires. nori kazama eventually had a change of heart - he confessed to his sins, and sold his corporation, effectively ending the horrible experiments.
after this, the students were paid compensation for their suffering - and afton’s mother, rei, moved them north, where they would join shujin academy. there, they thought their days of being thieves of heart would be over.
until, of course, the shady volleyball coach had a sudden change of heart...
AFTON: his loadout is still his enormous handcannon, as well as a katana. his arcana is emperor. his persona is baal.

Empress of All Seasons
Tumblr media
Empress of All Seasons is a YA fantasy written by Emiko Jean. It follows three characters: Mari, a yokai Animal Wife whose only mission in life is to conquer the Four Seasonal Rooms in the Imperial Palace and marry the prince; Taro, the prince, who prefers surrounding himself with his metallic inventions rather than humans; and Akira, a half yokai, half human, and Mariko’s best friend, who gets caught up in a yokai rebellion. I am so disappointed in this book. When I started reading it, I was absolutely captivated by the world of Honoku, and all of the Japanese folklore, and I was excited to follow Mari on her adventure. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that this book wasn’t going to deliver on most of this amazing world building, and by the end, what started out as a potential new favorite fantasy, turned into a mess.
World-building: This is the part of the book I unequivocally enjoyed. Empress of All Seasons is set in Honoku, an island inspired by Japan, where humans and demons or yokai live side by side. The yokai have been enslaved by the humans, and live subjugated, especially in the Imperial City. This was all great; I absolutely love Japanese folklore and mythology, and it’s not something we see often in fantasy; I absolutely adored all the different creatures. Japanese mythology is extremely different to European mythology, so all the different types of yokai and oni, their powers, the way the society is set up and the subversion of having women fight over the prince instead of vice versa were all great. I also really enjoyed the use of the Gods as a means to explain the backstory of the island; it was a very clever way of delivering backstory and a glimpse into the morals and culture of the world. I also liked Jean’s writing style; she uses descriptive but simple sentences and gave the world a certain charm, that made it very fairytale-esque, and readable. The issue with the world-building was unfortunately that it felt unfinished and lacking in execution. While the setting and different creatures were all interesting, none of them were truly explored or even developed. The issue comes down to the book’s length; at 350 pages, it’s simply too short to fit in this much world-building, mythology and plot and execute it well. As a result, we get introduced to the yokai being slaves in this world, and Mari’s clan, the Animal Wives being the last remaining yokai that aren’t enslaved, but this concept has no impact on the world. For one, it creates these cool supernatural creatures with no powers; only a few characters have powers that they actually use, and the rest are all nerfed. For another issue, in spite of this world operating on slavery, we never truly see any consequences for this. As an example, though I didn’t entirely like Children of Blood and Bone, it nailed this part of the story. There were consequences for the way the world is set up: characters were in constant danger of abuse or death, there was overpowering mistrust and fear, there was a true sense of injustice at how the society operated. Here, even though 2 of our leads, and many of the prominent secondary characters were yokai, there was never any sense of danger or peril; Mari was a yokai surrounded by deadly samurai and priests and never once was I worried she’d get found out or using her powers would have bad results. Tone: Along with the unfinished world, the tone was also an issue. Characters die in this book. A lot. And yet, like I said, there was no point at which I genuinely felt any of our leads were in danger, or really care about any of the characters who died. As a result the tone fluctuated wildly between fun, fast-paced action-adventure (think Kabaneri), and, gritty, grim action-drama (think Attack on Titan). One moment, a character’s entire village gets destroyed and all her relative and friends are killed, and the next we are back to funky shenanigans of planning a coup. Lines like 1000 against one; those are unfair odds. For them, don’t work juxtaposed to something as genuinely horrifying as slave collars that burn the skin off of whoever touches them, and when the horrific things and deaths happen, there is no time to mourn or feel the loss because of the Pacing: The issue that compounds every other issue in this novel, and it’s the pacing. Like I said; 350 pages is not enough for the amount of things that are squeezed into it; as a result, characters have no time to grow, and things that should and in other series do take up whole books, take up barely a chapter. As an example, let’s take Akira. He starts of as a cowardly, weak boy, in love with his best friend and preferring to hide and cower, rather than stand up and fight. He follows Mari to the Imperial City, thinking that if he became like the ronin who escort her, he would become worthy of her love. In said city, he overhears rumors of a yokai Weapons Master and a yokai rebellion and sets out to find them. He then trains, becomes a master shuriken thrower and reconnects with Mari. Sounds fairly simple right? Firstly, it takes Akira exactly 1 chapter to find the Weapons Master. Then, it takes another chapter for him to start training and get accepted by the rebels, and another chapter to become a COMPLETE MASTER SPY AND MASTER AT SHURIKEN. His hesitance at being part of the rebellion, comes of an completely illogical flip flopping, because one chapter he’s ready to run, the next he’s facing down 100 samurai by himself. One chapter he loves Mari and wants to escape with her, the next he’s completely fine with her being in love with someone else. One chapter he’s a coward, the next he’s saving the Weapon’s Master herself from an ambush. All of this in LESS THAN 5 CHAPTERS. I can’t even call his training training, because there’s no montage of him gradually becoming good at spying and throwing the shuriken; one chapter he’s bad at it, and the next he discovers the one thing he needs to do to be a master and becomes a master! Easy peasy. What should rightfully take up half a book (learning to fight, becoming braver, getting closer to the other yokai and the Weapon’s Master, changing his mind about Mari and the rebellion) take up barely a few chapters. That’s so fast, I wondered if I was accidentally skipping over chapters! And if you think that’s fast, let me remind you that Akira is 1 OF 3 LEAD CHARACTERS. Mari is the only one out of the three that has a sped up, but at least understandable character arc. Taro? His heel turn is so quick, I wonder why he was even a POV character. Plot: There is just too much going on in this book. Several rather major plots like Mari’s best friend and her child, Sachiko, Nori and Asami, Sei the servant girl, and the priests don’t even get resolutions! Heck, the main plot doesn’t get a resolution! Now with the title and the small synopsis I gave you at the start, you’d think that the main plot of this book would be the competition of the Four Seasons. And you’d be wrong; the competition takes even less time than the Essen Tach did in A Gathering of Shadows. There is 1 chapter per room, and the last room isn’t even a real one, it’s a duel. There is a bit of clever writing here with the puzzles in addition to the elemental obstacles, but none of the rooms were interesting. We don’t know any of the other 99 girls, and the ones that we do get to know are quickly discarded; Mari doesn’t even get to defeat any of them, they get dispatched completely independently. There is nothing interesting in the rooms, no elemental magic, or seasonal obstacles. The Winter Room was the worst by far, because you’d think a freezing snowstorm and four named characters would be the highlight, but it’s just as disappointing as everything else. So if the competition isn’t the main focus, then what is? Glad you asked; it’s a war! Not only is it completely unnecessary, we don’t care about any of the characters on either side, and it’s over in 3 chapters, the ending is so anticlimactic, that it genuinely brought down this book from a 3 to a 2 star. Without spoiling anything, we don’t get to see the actual conclusion of the book and we don’t even know if the main characters succeed in what they set out to do. Characters: This book has a LOT of characters. I’ll try my best to avoid SPOILERS, but for some it’s impossible. So if you don’t want to know anything, skip to the end. The Emperor is a pale copy of King Saran from Children of Blood and Bone, even down to his motivation. He was boring and uninteresting. Satoshi could have been interesting, but instead he was a completely one dimensional character, and a cliche. Not only that, but he’s also an implied rapist! Love that! Sei likewise could have been more interesting, but unfortunately she was also a cliche. She exists to provide a reminder that yokai are enslaved, and she’s a completely powerless and agency-free character. We never see her yokai powers, and her ending was likewise used to further another character’s plot. Out of the other competitors, Asami was the only one I’d call a character. Even still she’s completely underused, and though we get to see her powers and they are supremely cool, she ends up doing nothing for the plot. I was annoyed at her ending and also hated that her queerness and relationship were only implied. Hideko was the most interesting and my favorite character. She was a bit extra and a bit crazy, and though her monologues were very on the nose, she did get the best dialogue. I wish we could’ve seen her powers, though she did make up with her appearance and her pet ferret, Large. She also got an interesting backstory, but like Asami she doesn’t do anything; she just gets captured a lot. Yay. Akira we went over already, but what I really hated about his character was that both his cowardice and his overcoming of said cowardice were both informed traits. He watches someone use their power and statute to bully Sei into letting him in her room, where she is collared, alone and completely unable to protect herself and doesn’t intervene. Later he watches her gruesome murder and again, even though he can easily stop it, by, I dunno THROWING A SHURIKEN AT THE PRIEST he lets it happen. He wasn’t brave, he was an idiot and his character was completely static, and often made really dumb, unmotivated decisions that then had destructive consequences. Before I talk about Taro, I want to talk about that damn love triangle, as if this book didn’t have enough plot threads already. Why write in a love triangle if you won’t commit? If you’re going to do it do it! Don’t pussyfoot around it, and make one character suddenly completely understanding and fine that the other has fallen in love with someone else. It makes no sense and just wastes our time. Taro, the other half of this love triangle, was an even worse, even more incompetent and confused version of Inan. Everything about him is an informed trait; he is broody and cold and that’s about it. He is incredibly dense and gullible, believing what everyone tells him too with no evidence, falling in love with Mari after seeing her once, turning into a genocidal maniac with very slight provocation, in spite of displaying no signs that he’s violent or hateful. How and why he turns from someone who is compassionate to yokai to someone wanting to enact genocide is BEYOND me. His relationship with his father is strained and very slight, and his relationship with Mari was rushed. His ending too was an absolute train-wreck; he’s never faced with the consequences of his actions and because of a ‘twist’ basically everything he does is pointless. Mari was the only lead I liked, and she deserved a better story. I liked that she was genuinely stubborn and rash, that she spoke before she thought, that she was small, plain and not pretty and that she was already a capable fighter and warrior before the book started. I hated the love triangle, and her rushed relationship with Taro, but I loved her relationship with her mother and even liked the small rivalry/friendship she had with Asami. Like Taro, she too was a bit dense; she never really solves any of the puzzles in the rooms, and she’s constantly being saved by someone, both in the rooms and in the war. She has what is meant to be a big turning point for her character after the Winter Room, but there is no time for her to mourn or be properly dejected; it’s from one plot point to the next and her characterization suffers as a consequence. Conclusion? This is not a good book. I wanted to like it, I really did, and there is so much potential in here. If you are looking for a very quick, fantasy with a cool world and lot’s of mythology, then maybe check it out. But if you like your worlds with a little more substance and characters with a lot more personality, then skip this. There are better fantasies out there.
