I shall begin an all-new, all-homo blog! (I'm definitely not like 10 years behind on starting a blog lol).
I shall dub it JustSomeDude™! (I was gonna make it "Just Some Dude™", but when you Google that name you get a DeviantArt account that posts fat fetish art💀💀💀)
I talk about random bullshit here, basically whatever topic I feel like enlightening the masses about that particular day. And of course, because I am the most interesting man on earth, I'll also talk a lot about my life. You will listen to my whining, you will read my page, and you will consume product! Buy my merch!!!!!
Anyways, the inaugural installment of JustSomeDude™ focuses around the single most engaging, interesting topic of all the universes; The Big Sad.
Yep, I'm sad. Got broken up with by the woman I thought was The One, turned out she was the ½. Shit sucks bro. So please, all none of you reading this, beam to me your validation! Praise me this exact instant! I need all the shallow reinforcement I can get!
Ok, to drop the funni haha act for a sec and hit upon a more vulnerable note,a less funni, it truly is devastating to me. She was my first true love, I earnestly thought I would spend my life with her. Obviously, didn't play out that way lol.
It's been 2 weeks now. You'd think time would dull the pain, and what do you know? You'd be right. It's not nearly as bad as it was initially, yet I feel an agonizing emptiness inside my Self. I have navigated beyond grief over the idea of the relationship. I miss her and her specifically, not just the concept of having a girlfriend.
Truly and honestly, I have never had anyone else in my life comparable to her. I shared an intimacy with her that is beyond pre-relationship-me's comprehension. Obviously, having someone to do the sex with was cool and all, but beyond bodily pleasure, I miss her presence. I miss spending time with her, kissing and holding her in my arms, miss having my best friend, closest confidant, and favorite person all wrapped into one. I could go on an unbearably sappy rant about all the things I miss about her, like her freckles, beautiful brown eyes, her smile, her b- Wait a fucking second, I did again! Fuck!!!
Anyways, sorry about that. Just had to put my emotional side back where it belongs (locked and starving in my basement, right next to the 14 children).
Anyways, haha funni! Wanna hear a joke? My life! All you have to do is self deprecate to hide the pain! Afterall, if you refuse to acknowledge it, it doesn't exist. Much like Santa Claus, and the Federal Reserve.
I don't have a good seque into concluding this smattering of words, so I'm going to cheat and lampshade it. Am I being ironic? Am I using satire? Am I just being lazy? Yes.
Boom, instant segue. Basically, I will regularly add to this blog whenever I have something I feel like I need to express. I've found that expressing my emotions helps expel them, or otherwise they're remain entombed within my vessel, blighting the miniature clown people who pilot my body. I hope that people will read this, but honestly I just don't know. If a lot of people read this (which for clarification's sake, I absolutely don't expect to happen), I will be much more active and put significantly more effort into increasing the quality of my writing. I'm very good at revising my own work and drastically improving it, but it takes a whole lot of time, effort, and work. Anyways like, subscribe, and ring that be- wait, I'm a blog shill, not a YouTube shill. Fuck!

Ok after coming back to this and looking at the stuff that led me to think this again with fresh eyes, this is probably not it
Thing is, besides wrapping their dead in fabric as if to mummify them (most obvious with entombed husk) there's also two "sarcophagus" in the game, one containing godseeker and the other a dead snail shaman guarding over soul eater
Both of these are referred to in the wanderer's journal as "cocoons"
This name implies burials were seen as akin to metamorphosis, which makes sense as far as rebirth/reincarnation believes would look like in a bug kingdom
And at this point old me just went "ah like the wyrm", but upon reconsideration it isn't quite right
First off, despite the blaring similarities to metamorphosis, the structure the king form emerged from is only ever referred to as an egg (funny that the one to talk about its transformation is a caterpillar though)
Furthermore, there's reason to believe the average hallownest citizen didn't know of the king's origin as a Wyrm, given the halt of city progress just before kingdom's edge and their belief that the king created the world (but is not like the knowledge about his identity as a wyrm was taboo or anything though, those who were in the know, like the fungal tribe, didn't hesitate to refer to him as such)
One could also argue that the snail tribe is apparently older than hallownest, that godseeker is not of these lands (and also potentially in a real literal cocoon given her transformed body), or that the author of the wanderer's journal isn't even from hallownest
But godseeker's cocoon is also referred to as such in-game, and the snail's grave is in hallownest burial grounds, so it could be following a relatively standard (albeit pretty high class for the looks of it) burial method, so I'm inclined to believe coffin/sarcophagus= cocoon is a standard thing in universe
Now, one could be inclined to believe that these could've been adopted from moth beliefs given their role as caretakers of resting grounds, but for one their whole shtick is about memories and preserving the life of the dead through remembering them (which kind of goes against what metamorphosis is about imo)
This moth tribe was created in the image of Radiance, and there are no mentions of a "caterpillar/grub" phase for them, so is dubious if they even go for such a stage; and even if they did, given that they were still pretty much physical and functioning adult members of the society as moths, such a stage would be a mere coming of age/growing into adulthood thing, rather than ascending to a higher plane or a new life
Metamorphosis itself seems to be a rare/mythical thing on Hallownest, if you think about it
There's Wyrms, but there's also grubberflies, which are stated to have mysterious powers and their method of metamorphosis is rather bizarre, with the grub caretaker card implying they even mess around in dreams once they reach that state (although not few would cast doubt over how canon this obscure piece of text that used to come with merch is)
Bardoom is old enough to know in depth about wyrms and also stupidly large, yet shows no signs of wanting to or being able to go through metamorphosis; marmu talks about wanting the Queen to teach it to fly, and I agree that this implies metamorphosis, but it also implies the need for WL specifically in order to do so, and there's reason to believe that she has powers related to growth and transformation/evolution
Godseeker also shows a metamorphosis of sorts, but how natural it is is unclear, and she already has a lot of magic antics going on
Now, there's only two things in the game proper that are called cocoon
The godseeker coffin, and lifeseed cocoons
In a way, lifeseeds also go through metamorphosis, maybe this plays a role in the taboo around consuming them
Ok that has been enough rambling for today
Tldr there's one (1) point in common between the beliefs of hollow knight bugs and Homestuck trolls it seems
Somewhat marginally related to my previous art post, there *may* be a connection between the "death" of the Wyrm and Hallownest burial beliefs
If anyone wanna hear about that

LAIR Dish Out Bleak Doom From The Crypts of Richmond
~Interview & Live Photos by Randy J. Byrd~
Tumblr media
Album Art by Andrew Griffin
From the moment we heard the self-titled full-length debut by Richmond doom-sludge foursome LAIR, we knew they were gonna be a Doomed & Stoned kinda band. Their sound's not just loud and mean, it's got real heart, too. Then came Lair's new EP, 'At Our End' (2021), and we were smitten.
Of special note is the second track, "Forced March" -- a meditation on the Shelton-Laurel Massacre, which took place during the American Civil War in 1863. Thirteen Union sympathizers were executed by Confederates in the hills of North Carolina. To this day, an overgrown barn still stands on the homestead of their burial (you'll find this reflected in the album art, as well). At Our End is a harrowing experience, through and through.
Frontman and bassist Read Urban was cool enough to answer a few of our questions on behalf of the band, addressing how he and his bandmates Malachi Cresswell (guitar), Anne Marie Dumain (guitar), and Andrew Griffin (drums) get creative, themes that inspire them, and gear they knock about.
At Our End by LAIR
We are the end A totem to absence A forfeit of human worth
Scraping our bellies to crawl back to Something not deserved to be called home
Many voices crashing Like waves of pain Upon foreign shore lines Rising amongst bow’d howls
Wailing as one
Entombed in our shedding skin Birthing a new deep despair out Into these clogged streets that reek of Something not deserved to be called earth
Retching as one
Elaborate on the central theme of 'At Our End' (2021). Are you the primary lyricist?
So far, I have been the primary lyricist for both this release, as well as our previous full-length. My main goal for At Our End was to dwell on the idea that a single moment of horror can encapsulate and relay humanity’s depraved future, even magnifying and twisting the result. And even after accepting all of that, we are still not worthy of anything we have been given.
Tumblr media
Do you all write your own parts individually or is there a collaborative effort going into the process?
We all tend to bring riffs to the table and I think that was the case for the most part for the songs on At Our End. Usually, we start with one or two riffs and start building out from there, these songs being an amalgam of riffs from all of us. Some of the riffs start off acoustically, but I don't think we have brought anything to the group fully acoustic. There needs to be a certain amount of volume and weight behind each sustained note to get a sense of how it will work within the context of the full band.
Tumblr media
Where was the EP recorded, mixed, and mastered? Any special gear used during recording to help put the icing on the cake?
We recorded with Yave Rust here in Richmond Virginia over a weekend in July. It was a great experience overall. He is super easy to work with and quick to try out new things. He also cooked us Peruvian food everyday which ruled and we ended the weekend with pisco sours! The EP was mixed by Zach Weeks at God City which was super rad to be able to work with him, as well. For the recording, we used pretty standard stuff over the weekend. A lot of Big Muffs and classic "doom" amps on this record. My personal shout out is to Damnation Audio and Night Owl Industries, two solid pedal companies!
Tumblr media
Tell us about your label Hand Of Death and why you decided to go with then.
Nathan, who runs Hand of Death, plays in a killer death/doom band Harsh Realm. We got to play with them and meet him last time we were in Asheville, right before the pandemic. We were all stoked to work with him on this release and really happy with the direction and help he gave us. I also really appreciate the breadth of bands Hand of Death has worked with. It doesn’t adhere to just one genre of aggressive music, which is refreshing.
Tumblr media
Who designed the cover art?
Andrew shot the cover and the band photos. Since he has a personal connection to the Shelton Laurel massacre, I think we all felt it would be best if he captured and conveyed the themes of the record through those photos. He took a weekend down in North Carolina and brought back the cover photo. It’s been nice keeping a lot of that work within the band and feels like a natural extension of the songs we all work on.
At Our End by LAIR
A column came down
Along the valley’s edge Carried on southern winds Black and the hawk sang There, the Covenant was broken
Our centuries numb us both Indifferent to our own abysmal wounds
A forced march through hearth and home A laurel buried in snow beside The hickory mottled red Cairn beneath the pine
Thirteen then none Our hex yet paid Thirteen then none And still the women won’t speak
Tumblr media
With there being a pandemic currently, any plans on a livestream performance of 'At Our End'?
We are working on some video releases, merch, etc for and after the release. Obviously, COVID makes it all a lot harder so hopefully we don’t catch any major snags. We’ve been working on new material since we recorded and are deciding on what we want to do with these new songs soon. The band is just stoked to get these songs into the world and hope that people dig what we are doing.
Tumblr media
What are you all listening to nowadays?
I can’t speak for the rest of the band, but there is a ton of great stuff out right now. My stack of records sitting out right now: Ninth Circle - Awake Horrors, Void Ceremony’s new LP, Loud Night - Mindnumbing Pleasure, the recent Me Saco Un Ojo releases, etcetera. A lot of Bolt Thrower, too. I listen to a lot of hip-hop, as well, and the recent Ka- Descendants of Cain, Boldy James - Price of Tea in China, and Earl Sweatshirt - Feet of Clay are on heavy rotation.
Lair by LAIR
What's the deal with Riff Juice? Is that like Crunk Juice, but for Doom?
Riff Juice is whatever you need it to be. Some days it's a Coors Banquet. Other days it's kombucha or a cup of coffee. As long as you are writing riffs, it's all Riff Juice.

DYING FETUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey everyone, here is my 7th review of 2022, Dying Fetus! It had been a decade since I last saw them which was on Saturday March 24th, 2012 on the Metal Alliance tour with 3 Inches of Blood and Devildriver. Funnily enough on May 31st of yesterday it had been exactly 12 years since I saw them for the first time which was at the MOD Club with Misery Index and Arsis and then the next night was Obituary with Entombed, which made for an awesome double shot of death metal. This was also a show with a lot of unforgettable moments.
Let’s begin the festivities!
First band up was UNDEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had heard of this band by name before but never got around to listening to their music but from what I saw on metal archives is they were a death metal band from Rochester, New York and they had a great show. Frontman Alexander Jones had beckoned the crowd to take a few steps to the front which they did and when he commanded the crowd to ignite a circle pit, they complied with his order. Funny moment that happened was a guy saying “Wall of Death, Wall of Death!” and he was doing a couple of jumping jacks in the crowd which made me laugh and Alexander Jones had said “I didn’t ask for a wall of death” and then went on to make more funny banter about it, so a wall of death was formed and the guy doing the jumping jacks was taking command of directing both sides to charge when he gave the signal. Definitely a fun band to see.
Next band up was FROZEN SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another band I hadn’t heard of before but looked them up and they played Death Metal except they were from the Lone Star State of Texas and from the city of Dallas. I also liked before their song Hand of Vengeance that during the recording I heard the familiar voice of Mr. Freeze from Batman The Animated Series, which I thought was really cool. Frontman Chad Green had a banter going that was half amusing and half serious and the funny part he said was “Goddamn you make a fat man proud” Then he shifted towards a serious tone by saying “These last two and a half years have been anguish. Tragedy on every corner. Mental health is no joke. I’m sick of losing friends. We need to take better care of each other, here this is like a family. If you need someone to talk to, message us, and we will reply. Come by the merch table if you want to talk”. I definitely got the notion that by trade Chad Green is a psychiatrist or therapist or one who is a mental health advocate and wants to try and be there for as many people as possible. It was also cool how he dedicated the next song to Trevor Strnad who had recently taken his own life and to late Power Trip frontman Riley Gale who had died from a drug overdose 2 years ago as well. Another funny moment that happened was when Chad Green ordered the moshers to get down and do push ups like a Drill Sergeant at boot camp.
Last two bands were Bodysnatcher and Chelsea Grin, the latter I brand as Hell Pee Rubbish Bin, and I’ll say both were absolutely boring and awful, typical generic deathcore that puts me to sleep as if I’m breathing in sleeping gas fumes. Would’ve much rather heard a recording of Taco Hell induced diarrhoea to make me laugh hysterically.
Last band up was DYING FETUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 3rd time seeing them and as well the first time catching them live in a decade and man did it feel great seeing them live once again as they’re solid live. It would’ve been my 4th time catching them had I seen them at Wacken Open Air 2018 but I missed them as Judas Priest were playing at the same time. After they finished playing Schematics, John Gallagher got on the mic and said “We’d like to dedicate this set to a guy named Bob Shaw. His wife had requested that I spread his ashes inside the opera house” so John pulled out a small jar filled with the ashes of the late Bob Shaw since he was a fervent supporter of death metal and the death metal scene in Toronto and then spread them inside the opera house, which was definitely a touching moment. I will add that John looks so much different compared to the last time I saw him when he was bald and clean shaven as he grew his hair out and grew a beard, so with that look and wearing his hat backwards, he’s got the Rob Barrett look going on. Plus at one point John Gallagher had said “This next song is about a guy going to TIm Horton’s to pick up some timbits. He then buys them and everything for the bitch. He then takes her back to his motel where he gouges out her eyeballs and proceeds to have sex with her cranium. You know what song I’m talking about? This song is called Skull Fucked!” I cracked up at that banter. I’ll also add there was a roadie wearing pink jean shorts who would be dancing around to the techno music being played and as well two girls wearing green and purple teletubby hats, which I thought was also funny as clearly people were out to let loose and not take themselves seriously. Here’s Dying Fetus’ set:

I reblogged that instead of drafting it for when I was back on A Computer and therefore had greater ease of typing, so let’s try that again:
DON’T MIND IF I DO!
Cute things about my husband:
He keeps up to date on entertainment / merchandise news to a degree that I have never bothered to, including for things he knows I like that he has little to no interest in, so he can be the first one to tell me about new merch drops I might like or upcoming movies/tv shows he thinks I’d be interested in
Every time I start doing a goofy-ass bit for no apparent reason, he jumps in without a second’s hesitation.  Other times he will start the goofy bit to cheer me up
I’m much more of a morning person than him.  If it’s a day when neither of us have to be Up and Moving at a particular time, but I’ve gotten up before him, he will request I come back for morning cuddles by smacking the side of the bed where I usually lay.   If I’m out of earshot of the thumps, I will then receive a text of  “🖐️🛏️🖐️🛏️🖐️🛏️”
Spontaneous “Hey guess what?  I love you”s
Sometimes I catch him just looking at me and if I question it, the answer is always along the lines of “cuz you’re pretty.”
He cannot resist the siren song of a false mustache.   The fact that he has a full beard is irrelevant.  The false mustache will be worn.
If I’m sick or otherwise not feeling well and lying in bed, he will sneak in and gradually entomb me in every stuffed animal I own.  I own a lot of stuffed animals.
Things My Wife Does That I Think Are Great Part 1
Every day during my break she comes into my office and asks me "what's your tumny telling you about dinner" as a way of asking me if any of my intermittant dietary needs should be taken into consideration when she cooks
If she notices that I'm sad or stressed, she asks me for permission to get me a little present like a snack from the store, a book I want to read, or an album I like
When she wears a skirt, sometimes I will hear her quietly singing "swish, sweesh, swoosh, swish" to herself on a loop while doing a little twisty motion with her hips to make her skirt swish around her legs
Every time I tell her I love her, she gasps and pretends to be surprised
If I kiss her on the nose, she will pretend to power down like a robot and refuses to "turn back on" until I kiss her nose again
One time we were hanging out around a campfire with a friend and wifey was splitting some wood for us to throw on and apparently I got so distracted that our friend took a picture to show wifey when she sat back down
Before bed she always puts on her silk bonnet and it's the only time I can pet her hair without damaging her curls so sometimes she lays her head in my lap for a few minutes after she puts the bonnet on so I canpet her hair and scritch her forehead and she just says out loud "purr purr, purr purr" like not making the sound but saying the words???? And I love it so much????

ART SCHOOL | Q&A w/ FRENCH (UK)
Influenced by heavy metal, fantasy artwork, and 80′s skate graphics. artist Richard Sayer, aka FRENCH, summons through his art the images of decrepit skulls, mummified skeletons, and creatures from the deep abyss, all with a “good dose of dayglo colours.” Not only one thing, FRENCH has been taking his dark arts to various mediums from animation, claymation, printmaking to textiles. His works have been shown all over the world, his graphics have appeared for various skate companies and brands –from Creature, Independent, to Santa Cruz–, and he once had his art show in Sweden visited by band 'Entombed.‘ We’re stoked to chat with FRENCH about his art, his process, and his influences as he gears up for his upcoming art show at New Image Art Gallery Dec. 16th in LA.
Photographs courtesy of the artist.
Introduce yourself.   My name is French, well actually my real name is actually Richard Sayer, but since I was about 12 I’ve had the nick name of French and its just stuck ever since. I got the name ‘cos I bought a t-shirt on holiday in France and then when I came back I got given grief from all the other skaters for buying it. There’s a long standing resentment between the English and a the French a little like the States and Canada, so I guess it was meant as an insult to call me 'French’. I’m an artist / illustrator based in the UK, but I just spent the past 3 and half years living in Melbourne, Australia.  I make artwork for many different brands and industries, including the skate industry, fashion, print, music and advertising.
I run a small skateboard brand with my friend Alex Irvine called Witchcraft hardware. I currently make all the artwork for an Australian brand called 'Death Rites’ run by my friend Shawn Yates.
I exhibit my artwork widely, I have exhibited in the states, Europe, Asia, Australia, Israel and the UK. More recently my work is generally a bit darker, looks a bit like a cross between old metal album art, fantasy artwork and skate graphics from the 80’s but with a sense of humour and a good dose of dayglo colours. I’ve just started to work more with ceramics and also with animation as well. I like to work in many different fields and medias and I think that helps improve my work in all areas.
Your drawings are always filled with rad imagery like skulls, skeletons, dragons to crazy creatures.  What were your early influences art wise? I grew up surrounded by heavy metal records and music, my brother was a huge metal fan, which caused me to be. He was also super into 'Fighting Fantasy’ books, 'Warhammer’ , 'Dungeons and Dragons’ & all kinds of fantasy stuff, I think that just filtered its way into my brain and seeps out through my artwork. Obviously skateboarding and the artwork involved in that was a massive influence on me, when I was a kid I was obsessed with old Santa Cruz graphics and as I got older I was always more drawn to the skulls and puss versions of graphics, rather than the clean edge stuff. I grew up in a military town in the south of England so I think being surrounded by war monuments, soldiers and those sort of images it brought me more visually to it. My brother used to make me watch movies after school, before my mum got home from work, there would be a lot of John Carpenter movies, Arnie, horror movies of the 90’s had so many rad monster and animatronics that I think thats stuck with me as well, the covers for those old VHS tapes we seriously imaginative.
What are your all time favorite materials you like to use? Any new mediums you’re interested in trying? I like working in pencil first and then ink over the top. Recently I’ve started to paint in colours to the artwork, I wouldn’t say it was painting as I just add areas of solid colours, nearly always dayglo or fluorescent paints. Saying its not painting, I think everything I do is drawing, for example I just started to make some ceramic pieces and I definitely come at 3D in the same way as I would drawing, but I think that makes it my own. I’m interested to see what the ceramic works come out like in the end as its still early days and I haven’t fully glazed a piece yet.
You’ve created art for tons of things from skateboards to albums to clothing. How did you get started creating graphics or art for some of your favorite brands?  And tell us about your current or upcoming collaborations with Vans? I got started making artwork for people way back in the days when you had to show people a physical portfolio. I actually used to make post cards and small zines and then go and look up peoples details in Borders, like look in the magazines I liked for the art directors details and then send them a zine and post card and ask if I could take them my portfolio. I also used to just send people my zines and then call the office and see if they’d got it and if I could come and see them. I used to send so much stuff it was mad, it was a bit like 'if you through enough mud at the wall it starts to stick’ and I got work from a few people and from then on it kinder worked for me.
I think the best way of getting work, is by having work. You do one job for one brand, people see it and want something from you and so on. I worked in a few different skate shops and at a skate distro as well so I got to know people at brands I liked and respected and sent them my work and then I gradually got more work in the skate industry. That’s pretty much how I got to do work for Creature, Independent, Santa Cruz, Real etc. I met Nick Street & Jasper Jones who worked for Vans europe and they started to hook me up with small jobs for Vans and gradually I got more and more through Vans, not just in Europe but also in the states and world wide. It’s funny, cos I actually worked in the Vans store when it first opened in London.
I’m currently making work for a solo exhibition at New Image Art in Los Angeles which opens in December and Vans have very kindly offered to support the project and help me make a bunch of artwork for the show. I making drawings, animations, ceramics, enamel wall hangings, trophies, flocked screen prints and bunch of weird and wonderful merch. I’m really excited for it all, as well as stressed about making all this stuff. Recently you’ve been making some giant prints which we’ve seen on your IG.How did this come about? What’s your background with print making? How’d you get into it? The big dayglo paper ones? Yeah that was purely that I was having a few exhibitions in skate shops and smaller shop venues when I lived in Aus and I found that trying to sell original artwork to skate kids or metal heads is dumb. They can’t afford to buy originals and I can’t afford to sell it that cheap, but if I can make a print or zine and sell it for the price of a beer or a board then that audience is stoked. I’d rather be able to give something to those guys that love what I do and want to support it, but might not have a the cash to buy an original. I was working on and off at my friends printers in Melbourne and he just said that he would make me some huge digital prints on the fluro paper, the same as they used for band bill board posters and so I made a few and people seemed to dig them, so I made more. Its fun, cos its digital, theres no real set up cost and you can make as few or as many as you like. So if no one seems to like one image you can just ditch and make another. Also I really liked the bright coloured papers and the black ink, its a bit like a 1 colour black light print.
What’s your process like for making art?  Do you keep a sketchbook or just get at it in the studio? I usually just work in my studio, in my house. I often work from reference images and pull together images and photos in photoshop and then draw from that in pencil, then re-work it again in pencil, adding the detail and finally ink it. If need extra computer stuff I scan it and do that after.
Who are some of your favorite artists you think folks should check out? Some my current fav’s are : Parker Jackson, Daniel Cantrell, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Grady Gordon, Will Sweeney, Ragnar Persson, Paul Parker, Aaron Storck.
What are your favorite kind of Vans? I always skate in black and white original old schools or sk8 hi’s, I don’t do colours. But since the new pro’s came out I’ve been really into them, the inner sole has saved my knees.
Can you tell us your best or weirdest art story? I dunno if I have any weird ones really, its all pretty boring really, I just make artwork. I have a ton of weird skate trip stories, drunken stories, but art ones not really. Once one of the dudes from the band 'Entombed’ came to my art show in Sweden?
What’s on the horizon for 2018? What you super stoked on coming up? I dunno yet, I’m just trying to get to the end of 2017 and make the exhibition at New Image Art the best I can. I’ll keep you posted!

These guys could use a little help, check out the links below and show them some love #fullofhell #holymountainprinting @theevaultofheaven ・・・ Last night we drove into the biggest blizzard I've ever seen in northern Cali. The last 3 Entombed shows are now cancelled. We are sitting on our asses for a few days now. I'm swallowing my pride and saying that we could use a little help. We have a couple merch stores if anyone wants to pick something up while we slowly disappear into the snow... www.fullofhell.com/merch https://holymountainprinting.myshopify.com/collections/full-of-hell

Swedish Doomers VOKONIS Share New Single Ahead of RippleFest Sweden!
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
Tumblr media
What a way to start the week, with brand new music from VOKONIS!   It's hardly a secret that we're fans of the band. After all, they're making their first appearance in North America at Doomed & Stoned Festival in October. One month before that, they'll be joining a damned impressive bill for RippleFest Sweden II. Ahead of the big event, which takes place September 7th and 8th at Copperfield's in Stockholm, we're debuting a new single by each of the bands featured on the bill, starting with the progressive doomers from Borås. You'll be able to download each single the day after we premiere it here.
"It's a somewhat transitional song for us," singer/guitarist Simon Ohlsson says of the massive seven-minute-plus single before us. "We're showcasing our best doom while offering up a varied and progressive feel. I also believe I've done some of my best solos yet on this track!"
Vokonis are about to make a leap forward in their evolution as a band and we dispatched executive editor Melissa Marie to ask Simon all about it, so be sure and check out the interview below and turn up the volume loud as Simon, Jonte, and Emil bring us the roaring "Celestial Embrace."
Give ear...
RippleFest Sweden II

Interview with Vokonis Frontman Simon Ohlsson
  By Melissa Marie
  Photographs by Robert Hellström
Hey, Simon, thanks again for visiting with us. I’d like to first talk about 'The Sunken Djinn' (2017). This album is certainly more dynamic and far more transparent than your debut 'Olde One Ascending' (2016). Did you guys really set out to prioritize and improve your production quality on this album?
Hey Melissa! Thanks for having me. A pleasure as always! Personally, I think our first record Olde One Ascending is very raw. We had only been playing for a few months when we recorded it. So it’s a special record in that sense. I think that’s a good way to keep progressing, write a bunch of songs, record them and let them go and focus on the next thing.
So when we set out to write The Sunken Djinn we knew what we wanted to do differently. I think it’s more focused and direct in terms of songwriting. As you say, it’s also more of a hi-fi experience. That was our first collaboration recording new material with Joona at Studio Underjord. So we kind of developed this bond and for every recording we did with Joona, the better it sounded. He’s just got an ear for what we want out of a record.
Olde One Ascending by Vokonis
You released 'Olde One Ascending' on Ozium Records and at some point, ended up signed with my all-time favorite underground label, Ripple Music. How did you end up with Todd Severin and company?
Yes! Todd really is the man. We actually got linked together by one of the best podcasters that deals in heavy music here in Sweden, Magnus Tannergren of Into The Void Radio. He knows Todd from a while back and he’s always on the lookout for bands. So when he saw us he gave us a great recommendation that landed us a spot over at Ripple. We are very honored to be part of the family, that’s for sure.
The Sunken Djinn (Single) by Vokonis
How important is artwork to you, as a band? Both the artwork on 'Olde One Ascending' and 'The Sunken Djinn' is very interesting and not something you always see in doom metal territory. Even the artwork for “The Sunken Djinn” and “Blood Vortex” singles are something that looks like they might come from a band like Entombed, which I think it very cool. I love Entombed by the way. Now that you’ve released the new track for “The Derelict Eyes” I can also say that I find the artwork is so unique.
I do love death metal and graphic art! That style is something that has spoken to me since way before I started playing doom. I guess it carries over well stylistically.
Tessa Najjar handles the art for our albums. For us it’s very important to paint a picture. It’s so important I think for a lot of bands in the scene. And I believe that Tessa’s style works very well with our music. We generally present to her a concept and just let her do her thing. If she comes to a crossroad with the piece, we’ll discuss in what direction we should go together. It’s a great partnership.
Kyrre Bjurling have handled art for us too. He’s a very special person to us since we found a fan-made picture for when we had released "The Sunken Djinn" as a single. We reached out to him and he helped us make that piece of fan-art as the cover art for the Ripple Music 7” single. That’s why our community is so cool!
Doomed & Stoned in Sweden by Doomed & Stoned
Speaking of “The Derelict Eyes,” I believe this is likely your fastest song to date. Do you feel putting this track on the 'Doomed & Stoned in Sweden' compilation was a bold move? You know people are bound to complain when bands take new directions, although sometimes I wonder if this occurs mainly in America. Do you feel that Swedes are more musically open minded than Americans? How has the general response been to this track?
Yes this is our fastest song. We wrote it in a period of us not really knowing where to go next. So we wrote something entirely different. Because I’m a big prog-lover. I don’t really care what style I’m listening to as long as it’s good. So that song was very important in our progression. Elements of “The Derelict Eyes” will definitely be used going forward. We have had great reception on the song. Our new label, The Sign Records, was so surprised when we sent it to them, they were like “Have you been sitting on this song for over a year? It’s killer! We gotta get it out now!” So that made me laugh a lot haha! Seeing their initial reaction gave me confidence in the song as well. I’m my own worst critic.
I don’t know if swedes are more open minded as a lot of my favorite bands that I am continuously inspired by are American. My thoughts are that if you dig a band such as Monolord, you probably like Entombed, right? And I’d love for Monolord to do a fast song. They’d pull that off with grace, I’m sure.
We’re now past the halfway mark in 2018. Any favorite albums of the year so far?
I have a few yes! Weedpecker came out with a great album right after the New Year. I’ve listened to that a lot. I know that SVVAMP released a great follow-up to their first album just now. My friends in Fungus Hill released what’s to me one of the best albums this year, Cosmic Construction on Proxima B. Also, we have Spiral Skies that delivered an album that sounds like I wish Ghost would sound. I always love to listen to new music. And I mainly pick up inspiration from bands doing something else than heavy fuzz-stuff.
Tumblr media
I understand you are quite the gear junkie. Tell us about your setup. Favorite guitar? Preferred strings? The pedal you refuse to live without? Your amp setup?
Is it that evident? We are huge gear nerds and we’re always looking for ways to reach that tone that you have in your mind. I haven’t been using them live but my favorite guitar is the Jazzmaster. They’re kind of odd birds in heavy music but I can make it fit and I plan on using them extensively going forward. I usually use Elixir 0.13-0.52 in a C standard tuning. I like how it feels crisp and tight. Not to floppy and boomy. If that makes sense.
I refuse to perform without my Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh. That’s just the best fuzz pedal I know. It can do basically everything you want in the realm of muff-style fuzz. So it goes very well with our music. Regarding amps I have two of them. And they’re actually my dream amps. Ever since I started out playing guitar, I wanted a Marshall JMP 2203. I got hold of one last year and I love it so much. It’s got that grind that I’ve been searching for. I also got an Orange OR100, the other dream amp for me. It’s thick and perfect for playing with single coils as it’s always beefy and never shrill sounding. These two are gonna do the bulk of the work on our new album.
I follow Vokonis constantly on Facebook and see that you have a signature guitar with Boult guitars. How did all that come to be?
Yes! Chris reached out to me after he noticed me using another Boult guitar. I always had this thing for Yamaha SGs and I still do. So he did a Yama style guitar which carries the name The Djinn. Pretty cool, huh?
The heavy metal scene in Sweden is overwhelming, just to say the least. Who are your favorite Swedish metal gods?
That’s gotta be Opeth. I love them with a passion and they got me into heavy music. I can listen to their discography over and over and not get tired of it. The way they’ve transformed themselves time and time again is beyond me. I always get a kick out of listening to them. Then there’s Skraeckoedlan. They’re probably my favorite band in the realm of stoner/doom/sludge.
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about the invitation you received to be a part of the Planet of Doom movie. Did you write an entirely new song for it? That must be a massive honor!
That was so insane. I had been aware of the project for a few years before we got an invitation, so when David messaged me asking if we could put together a song we jumped on it. Feels kind of insane even now when it’s out there. Tim helped me with the lyrics just to get the story across. It was certainly the first time I wrote lyrics with someone from the other side of the planet. So yes, to sum it up, we are very honored to be part of it. It’s like a love letter to the whole genre. To be part of that select few is a special feeling.
Speaking of collaborations with Ripple Music, you have a new track titled “Celestial Embrace” on 'Skull Mountain' (2018). Did you write this specifically for this vinyl release?
Todd of Ripple Music asked us if we wanted to be on a compilation. So we became linked at an early stage. More than a year ago. And we had been started writing two songs after we had recorded The Sunken Djinn. We wanted to do something different and try to convey that we’re going to do some different stuff. I think that we got to showcase some of that in “Celestial Embrace” Very proud of that song.
The Sunken Djinn by Vokonis
I hear we can expect a new full-length Vokonis record in the not so distant future. What can you tell us about it?
We are headed into Studio Underjord in August, actually, so it looks like there’ll be at least a single out this fall. Then we’re going to release that album sometime in 2019 on The Sign Records. It’s too early to say dates and such but it’s coming for sure. It’s very different from our previous material. We have more clean passages and Jonte is singing almost half of the record. We had a different approach while writing it, previous albums was mostly my writing. Now I came up with a riff/idea and we did a lot more work on it. So it’s not nearly the same as it was when it was just an idea. In my mind, it’s the most Vokonis-sounding thing from us yet. As we put ourselves into this album more than ever before.
Of course, I must mention that, in addition to Ripple Fest in September, you'll be headlining at this year’s Doomed & Stoned Festival in October. As you recall, we tried to get you guys to come out last year, but the stars just didn’t align the way we wanted. Patience always pays off and 2018 is the year!
We couldn’t be happier! Finally we’ll be able to come to the US and play! Seriously, though, this is what makes the scene so special. It feels kind of close-knit and small even though you’re from the US and I’m from Sweden. I can’t wait!
Thanks for chatting with us once again. We’ll see you on stage!
Thank you! Always a pleasure.
