On the occasion of its 50th anniversary the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon with the exhibition „Art on Display 1949-69“ in 2019 took a retrospective look at its own as well as other museological display solutions after WWII. Together with Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam the curators Penelope Curtis and Dirk van den Heuvel put together an exhibition and the present catalogue highlighting the layout and concept of the exhibition spaces at the museum, designed by Franco Albini and Franca Helg, as well as groundbreaking exhibition designs by Lina Bo Bardi, Carlo Scarpa, Aldo Van Eyck or the Smithsons.

Especially the latter case studies provide additional context to the groundbreaking permanent installations at the Gulbenkian and show that novel ways of presenting art in a museum often were only temporary. Aldo Van Eyck, himself friends with many artists, for example designed the first CoBrA exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 1949 and dynamically placed the paintings on the walls and in the exhibition spaces in order to relate pictorial subjects and display. Later he also introduced a decided urbanism to exhibition design when he designed a pavilion for the Sonsbeek sculpture exhibition in Arnhem in 1966.

Against the background of the ongoing discussions surrounding the museum as institution as well as the often still very traditional presentation of art the retrospective view at exhibition designs and displays shows what has and will be possible in open-minded institutions. A democratization of the museum may also be reflected in the way the art is presented as Lina Bo Bardi’s legendary displays at the MASP in São Paulo showed: she wanted visitors to meet artworks on eye level with the possibility to walk around them and perceive them as literal works of art.

„Art on Display“ is a wonderfully designed and thought-provoking catalogue that I warmly recommend to anyone interested in radical and intelligent exhibition design!

Humayun's Tomb Museum Illustrated Map Mural

Rod Hunt was commissioned by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture to create a huge and detailed illustrated map of the Humayun's Tomb World Heritage Site, Nizamuddin Basti and the Sunder Nursery for the new Humayun World Heritage Site Museum in New Delhi. The aim of the map was to help visitors understand the world heritage site, its dense ensemble of medieval monuments and its immediate setting. Rod worked closely with Ratish Nanda CEO of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture to create a detailed an accurate representation of the restoration and conservation of the historic tombs, monuments and wider site. This hugely complicated map illustration had to accurately depict the tombs and monuments architectural features down to the smallest detail. The final mural is printed at 12m x 4.5m in size and is installed in the vestibule gallery of the museum.

On February 22, 1991, “A Few Basic Typefaces” exhibition opened at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in NYC. Massimo Vignelli was awarded their annual Master Series award which included an exhibition. He chose to highlight work in only a few typefaces: Bodoni, Century, Garamond and Helvetica. This week marks the 32nd anniversary of this exhibition.

SVA’s Masters Series began in 1988 as “an annual award exhibition to honor great visual communicators—designers, illustrators, art directors and photographers—of our time.”  Massimo Vignelli was the 3rd person to receive this honor. 

“It was a polemical exhibition to protest the inflation of meaningless typefaces polluting our world.“ Vignelli: From A to Z, p. 187 

For our Open Houses this week, we will be revisiting this exhibition and invite you to think about designing type and designing with type. You will be able to view many of the artifacts from this 1991 exhibition plus some designs done after 1991 that includes these 5 typefaces.

From the exhibition records, we found that the exhibition plan originally included designs using Times New Roman as well. You will be able to see these works too. Along with images of the original exhibition, the original exhibition checklist, and other documentation. Plus numerous OTHER typefaces, many custom, that appear in the Vignellis’ work. Futura. Optima. Didi. Bloomingtype. Our Bodoni. Our Futura. 

Plus numerous custom alphabets for architectural graphics, logotypes, etc. And we’ll have examples of designs using type that might seem very “un-Vignelli.”

Do you prefer museum exhibits with lots of open area or fitting as much as possible into the available space?

look, I'm a Large Person, I need at least some space to get around. I'm disabled, there need to be benches. Wheelchair users need to have accessibility. A balance between the necessary open space, plus extra for safety, and filling the rest with specimens to have as much as possible within the space is the best possible design.
