SO SORRY!
I've been MIA for what feels like forever, but let me tell you why.
I take morning medication for my thyroid and my heart. My bed is positioned RIGHT next to my desk, that way I can just sit up, pop open my medicine container, chug down some water, and then go back to sleep for the hour until I'm able to eat. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned one morning. I'd gotten out of bed and taken my medicine and then, out of the blue, my hand just loses its grip on my glass of water. This has never happened to me before (it was a result of my NMO - I've been feeling pretty weak lately, especially my legs). I wasn't all that tired, I wasn't readjusting the glass, I hadn't bumped into anything... I wasn't moving at all! My grip just loosened and I hadn't even realized it down it until everything was wet - INCLUDING MY LAPTOP!
I immediately shut my laptop off, ran to the bathroom to grab a towel and dried off the keyboard (which is where all the water went), dried the laptop off with my hair dryer, took out the battery, and then kept my laptop upside down for a full 24 hours. I was petrified the next day when turning it on. My parents and the computer repair guy we'd spoken to were all encouraged it would be fine since I took such quick action, but I was absolutely terrified it was going to be ruined. It took me 7 times to turn on my laptop. Once I plugged it in it booted up, then shut down again, then I was finally able to get it to stay on. All my files were still good. My keyboard on the other hand was another matter, which makes sense since it got most of the water. The keyboard worked, but none of the keys were what they should be, so there was no way for me to type unless I did it with the on-screen keyboard and I didn't want to pick through each key separately, so I just made a plan to take the laptop in and get the keyboard repaired.
Before I did that, I wanted to get an external hard drive just in case something happened when the repairman was working on it. I'd had another repairman completely DESTROY my hard drive when he was supposed to be taking it out for me so I could use it on another laptop, so I wasn't going to take any chances this time. We went to Walmart a few days later and got it and just as I was plugging it in to transfer everything, I automatically tried to rename it (I like to do that with my drives) before I remembered my keyboard wasn't working. Except it was. I opened up Microsoft Word and was amazed to find that my keyboard had fixed itself. I guess it just needed more time to dry. Since it was fixed, I didn't need to use the hard drive (I'm going to use it to store my videos on).
That was only one problem, however. I have a huge eBook library and I've been trying to organize it with the Calibre app. I wanted to be able to find a specific genre (like cozy mystery, thriller, etc.,) without having to look through every single one. Once I had all my books in Calibre I decided just to export a list of everything, so that it would take up less space. So, I did that and then got rid of Calibre. Somehow, and I honestly don't know how, my folder of 'books to read' was gone. I searched everywhere on my laptop for it until I realized that the entire folder had gotten moved to Calibre and that Calibre had deleted it when it uninstalled. I keep my books separated by series, title, etc., and no other folder was in there aside from the 'books to read'. I had my monthly books; books for October/Halloween; series I wanted to re-read/read... it was all just gone. I was able to pull most of it off my Kindle Paperwhite, but one series I couldn't get back.
If that wasn't enough, I was without Internet connection for the longest time. My parents both had it, and I had it on my phone, but my laptop just wasn't connecting. I'd tried turning it off and back on at least three times, which always works, but this time it didn't. Finally, after the last time, I decided to check for any problems and my laptop immediately found and fixed it and it was restored late last night.
(This is unedited. I've been dealing with so much inflammation lately that I don't have the energy (physical or emotional) to write a post and then edit it. Sorry for any mistakes, which I'm sure there are).

what's the most important piece of advice you could give someone who's getting into downloading media (piracy, archiving, whatever)?
For the love of God, MAKE BACKUPS. I had to learn this lesson the hard way as a teenager when my external hard drive crashed and I couldn't pay the data recovery fee (which would have been a few hundred dollars, if it even worked).
Have backups. Have backups of your backups. To give you an idea of what my data and backup setup is:
My laptop: two backups (physical backup via external hard drive and automatic cloud backup via BackBlaze)
My media collection: three sources/backups (two external hard drives and a NAS [network attached storage system] with a failsafe measure because it has two hard drives; I will most likely look into cloud-based backup as well).
If you've noticed, I not only have a backup of all my data, I also have backups of backups. When it comes to your precious data, you seriously can't be too careful. I would recommend at least investing in one physical backup option as well as a cloud-based one (like BackBlaze).

State of Affairs: oh, it's not good. Bad, in fact!
listening music (lol)
Greetings, all! I apologize for not much communication, art or comics this month, but things were a bit out of my control! I'll cut right to the point: I had a big oopsie at the start of May, and the situation overall has not gotten much better since then.
Here's the scoop as plain as I can explain it: I dropped my external hard drive, and it no longer connected to my computer. My computer has a very tiny amount of memory (the OS capacity is less than 120GB), so I have used an external hard drive as the brain of my computer for years now. I have no back-ups either on another hard drive, older computer, or cloud service.
This external hard drive housed everything I have created and brought with me between computers since 2013. It stored all my art. All of it. My comic pages, my working files, my works-in-progress, my commission pieces, as well as gifts from friends and other artists. It had all the sessions of my at-home tabletop game 'Blueshift', which is a pretty big hit for me as I had only just finished the game. I didn't even have time to be happy the game was finished until I had to mourn a loss of it I had not anticipated.
I sent the hard drive to a data recovery company with good reviews. It had nearly 2TB of data on it, and I tried very hard not to get my hopes up that they'd be able to retrieve most of my data. Despite this, I still was disappointed by what they sent back.
To be blunt: they did not retrieve most of my data. In fact, I'd say in total they only recovered about 40%, if I am being generous. They were unable to recover any of my in-development projects (A Cure for Athanasia, Super Manifest: Steward Cycle, The Tenth, The Sword of Hours, etc), and unfortunately BACKLASH didn't make it out unscathed either. Old art files that I one day wanted to make Prints off have been lost, as well as small doodles and secret sketches which never made it online.
While reviewing the files that they managed to recover, I also noticed that whole chunks of BACKLASH's working page files have been lost or corrupted. This isn't a huge setback for the comic itself since all of BACKLASH is online to read. But it is hard and heartbreaking for me, because despite everything I did one day want to make a printed edition of BACKLASH. I wanted to hold my comic in my hands.
That dream is not impossible, but it is now much further away. I can recreate my old pages with what I currently have, but it will be a lot of extra work, and there is no getting around that.
Losing this much of my history, artistic journey, relationships and formative time as an artist has been really hard on me, emotionally and mentally. I'm very sad. It's hard to draw right now for myself. Commission work comes easily, since I am given a prompt to draw for someone else, but creative ideas are not flowing for me at the moment. My hands are frozen and dejected.
I am now waiting to get back the files that the data recovery people managed to retrieve for me (probably by tomorrow, they said), and I am looking into other places in order to get a second opinion of sorts. At this point there really is no harm in trying, and maybe a different operation might have better luck. Who knows? It may be grasping at straws, but at this point things can't get any worse than this.
When I get my data back I'll be able to finish up BACKLASH chapter 7. I want to finish it off - there are not very many pages left, and miraculously the few remaining pages are among the ones that were recovered! So that's good. I will be finishing up the chapter, and afterward BACKLASH will be taking a bit of a break. I don't know how long the hiatus will last, and I won't be making any kind of estimate. It'll take as long as I need until I feel I can put one foot in front of the other again. Maybe I'll work on something else for a while, maybe I won't draw anything. Who knows! I don't, haha.
Eventually I'll be okay, and I'll get back on the horse. Even in the midst of all this turmoil I really just want to be making comics ;_;
Until then, I just need some time. It's the only cure for this kind of problem, I think. So, I thank you for your patience, and I thank you for the love you've shown me, my work, and my characters. I couldn't be where I am and I couldn't have made all the work I have without your support and love. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I'll see you when I get back! Much love and many kisses, xoxo 💖💖💖
