Wednesday, January 22: Exxplorer, “City Streets”

Among many other things, the ‘80s were full of heavy metal bands large and small (though mostly very small) content to write and play songs and albums largely about heavy metal, and without any of the irony or sideways “see what I did there?!” glances that invariably come from throwback acts.  That was how a band calling themselves Exxplorer could put out a debut named Symphonies of Steel, open it with an ode to “City Streets” and actually garner some amount of acclaim.  As expected, this was traditional ‘80s American metal in its purest form, with everything that went along with that: Lennie Rizzo wailed away over charging riffs and a driving backbeat, and the whole affair was reasonably well-executed even with the nonexistent recording budget.   And like any Z-grade ’80s metal banger worth its salt, there was a ridiculously inflated sense of drama to the proceedings: “People live and die on City Streets!!!”- oh, you don’t say!  But that sort of thing was fundamental to this music, and Exxplorer certainly did their part.
