berlioz stretched out on the couch, barely coming to consciousness as he heard someone enter the room. he didn’t want to wake from his nap just yet — it felt as if it just started. but, his siblings and mother constantly told him he slept too much, so perhaps he didn’t really need the extra winks of sleep. “if you’re coming in here to wake me up, forget about it. it’s not that important,” he said, voice deep as he refused to open his eyes. he just wanted to be willingly oblivious to everything and everyone.

Berlioz’s Groove Room plan officially had wheels. 

Before, it’d just been a weird impulse. Something to think about instead of the things he should be thinking about (his “real” father, the fact that Pere didn’t know, and that he wasn’t talking to Maman or even Nounou, his homework, etc) that was detached from every other facet of his life. He liked that it was his secret still, especially because it meant that if it all fell apart, he wouldn’t be embarrassed or disappointed. Though he didn’t think it would fall apart as long as it remained a secret. That was the thing about secrets. They protected themselves. 

So now he had a co-conspirator-- Clara-- and a magic consultant (lol)-- Lymantria-- and after staging a fake call for a student sorcerer or sorcerer apprentice via the radio, he reeled in the gal who might make it all happen: Vanessa. 

“Hey, so if you want, we can do the interview,” he’d told Vanessa when she’d arrived at the station. “But how would you like to be part of opening up a secret club instead?” 

And so now he were down in the basement again, which smelled of dust and cradled the chill of October in its bones, with Lymantria on one side, and Vanessa-- who seemed pretty cool-- on the other.

“Right, so this is where it’ll be,” said Ber. “Once we y’know. Clean it up and everything. I’m hoping the magic can help with that too.”

Greasers: BLAH, look I wouldn’t hate this if they like at least performed Greased Lightning or committed to the HAIRSPRAY bit, like, give me some volume!! I love boys in leather, but Halloween is a time to go all out, not play it safe. 1/10

Mei and Lock’s Antony and Cleopatra: Honestly, barely redeemed from last place by Mei’s wig. Still, it’s truly so straightforward and boring, especially compared to these other options. The heterosexuality, additionally, repulses me. You both deserve the tragic end foretold. 2/10

The Justice League ft. bros + Rose: Lol. This is basic AF, completely uninteresting to me, and borderline racist in Swynlake terms (Tom is the one playing with that line there-- though it’s all up for debate, I’m just acknowledging the debate exists). I do LOVE they included their dog though, and I guess it does tech pass the Bechdel test (unlike most superhero movies) b/c of that so... that’s the only reason I’m putting you above Mei and Lock. 3/10

The Flynn-Fletcher Brothers as Mario/Luigi: Look, this is also pretty boring to me. I give points for it obvs be homemade, and I mean, they both ARE cute which... is maybe saving this more than it should. But I love cuties in overalls! I guess there’s something to be said for a classic? IDK ask me again tomorrow and I might hate it. 3/10

Minnie and Marzel as Zorro and Elena: It’s sexy! I love mining a lesser known Hollywood classic, and I love a mask, and I LOVE a sword. It’s just altogether very sexy in a classic way, and so it’s a solid, albeit safe costume. One day I too hope to wear a beautiful white gown and have my own Zorro sweep me off my feet so! I don’t hate it! 4/10

Jake Long + Deb’s Alien/Astronaut: Slightly more original! Now we’re thinking! I’m in love with Deb’s hair here, and I think the costume does strike a good balance between sexy/quirky. She also sidesteps the whole magick debate by going alien!! I missed Jake Long’s face though. RIP. 5/10

Mocha, Jane, and Barbie’s Pirates: This is also very basic and classic, but It’s ranking higher than others for the following reasons: Barbie. Mocha. Also, Jane’s HILARIOUS peg leg. That’s playing to your strengths! So um yes, please, someone, plunder my booty anyday ;-; 5/10

John Darling + Ting-Ting’s Celebrity Chefs: Honestly, if your costume isn’t at least a little bit funny, even if it’s in an uncomfortable way, what are you even doing? This feels both funny and uncomfortable and made me do a double-take on my feed. Honestly, the more I look at it, the more I love Ting-Ting’s Guy Fieri. She might, actually, be the coolest Qin after all??? Who knew! 7/10

Nemo/Finn/Tae’s Powerpuff Girls: Look, I admit that I don’t know if this falls in the same is this racist? club as the Justice League, but I’m willing to ignore it because 1. GENDERBENDDDDDD and 2. COMPLETELY homemade and designed from the ground up (ugh ugh ugh) and 3. More inventive than the Justice League. Also I LIKE Powerpuff more, and I do want to steal Finn’s boots, thank you for asking-- and Nemo and Finn even dyed their hair! I respect, I respect. 8/10

Simber’s Danny/Sandy: It’s the Queering a Classic for me, and also the Six-inch Heels for me, and the Leather Jumpsuit for me, and also Berlioz’s entire forehead, so smooth and bright that you could land a PLANE on that thing. I think Simber knows exactly what Halloween is and this costume, like their others, are the perfect balance of hilarious and sexy and scary all at once! Do I want to hit on Simba or run away screaming? I simply can’t decide! 9/10

Alana/Jake’s Genderbent Playboy + Bunny: It’s the Queering a Classic for me. Again, I reward couples who make a little bit of a joke of themselves, and so this made me respect Jake more (though I think we all knew he was the sub in the relationship anyway). This one is slightly edging out Simber because I think the Playboy/bunny combo is less done than Danny/Sandy. It’s really a toss-up though. 9/10

Seamus MacTuggen + dog as Indiana Jones + t-rex: YES this counts as a COUPLE we respect dog lovers on this blog. Um, it’s actually hilarious. I think what I love most about it is how low-effort it is but to great effect. Like, Seamus probably had all these clothes in his closet already! He is a sexy billionaire who used his cheapest flannel and bought a dog costume online for like 10 quid! I like that BDE energy and it also gives me a special thrill to give this award to the person who tried the least. It’s simply infuriating, I know. I’m a monster. Happy Halloween. :) 10/10

It was the first thing in mind the moment Campion began shrieking and unveiling her true self in the manner of a Saturday morning supervillain to a varying (but rousing) response. They watched as the scene unfolds before them like a particularly shitty renaissance painting - Vixen leaping into action, only to be grabbed by Chuck like a cat and yanked by the hair by Berlioz. Pan silenced by the notion that someone as shifty as Campion was could have lied to her. O’Malley wailing. Still trying to make her more palatable.

Smee crackles gently, gills twitching a bit as they lean over the table and watch the shit go down. No ‘I told you so’, no biting comments on the fact that there was yet ANOTHER mage in their presence... nothing.  They were done. Campion could find another willing taker to gloat about her schemes to - surely there seemed to be many in the wings. 

‘I just don’t think being fatalistic makes someone more mature than anyone else.’ Pan’s voice chides in memory.

Their tail flicks as they close their eyes to it all. 

Perhaps not, they think. But it does prevent the inevitable heartbreak.

3. A song that reminds you of summertime

Slide by Calvin Harris ft. Migos and Frank Ocean is my go to, but I'm going off the beaten track for this one. I think I gotta go with Cocaina by Captain Cuts, Daniels ,and Rich The Kid. It's got like. Miami house party doing dumb shit vibes. It feels like it would be playing while we b-rolled over a summer house party or hot people on the beach. It's kinda gross, it's kinda seedy, it's hot and sticky, it's stupid. It's got that summer grit that only the beach brings.

I simultaneously cannot stand parties like this and miss them terribly. Also cocaine sucks do better drugs (Source: trust me). I do love a good song with a stupid play on words.

5. A song that needs to be played LOUD

I know it's a classic but Genesis by Justice. I think. Maybe Pursuit by Gesaffelstein? Mazel Tov by Talco? I did go on a big Italian Ska kick for exactly two weeks. I dunno man, anything that makes me feel like I'm going to cross my eyes watching the light show and teleport out of my body due to the bass allowing me to achieve astral projection. I love a good loud, grungy, rough electronic song played loud enough to be a solid wall. Like some of those samples need to feel like a needle jackhammer man.

The shameful secret answer is If I Can't Have You by Shawn Mendes, I need to have it loud enough to have ear damage while I dance in my bathroom mirror and lipsync it

6. A song that makes you want to dance

I have seen Caravan Palace THREE TIMES live and they are a TREAT every single time. I think I would have to go with Supersonics today, though Lone Digger is a classic shout and I think my favorite dance-y track on the new album is Mirrors. I'm glad Mad finally got an album release though, that video is fuckin weird man. I dunno I just think that Electro Swing in general is a genre that makes me want to move. Jazz sensibilities with electro beats? I just lost my shit about berlioz I can only be so predictable.

16. One of my favorite classical songs

I am a huge, unbelievable fan of Rondo Alla Turka by Mozart. I guess it's Piano Sonata no. 11, but I really only care about the third movement, Turkish March. In a shocking turn of events I like repetition. Time loops. Things iterating on themselves. Running something back and embellishing. Rondos in general do a lot of repetition in a way that doesn't get boring for me, and it's a simple(at least in components of composition) piano piece that was easy to follow for me when I cared more about Classical as a kid (aka when I played violin).

I do love me some Mozart, even today. It's kind of a shame that a lot of pop cuture riffing on classical music I've had access to (So like, Konami rhythm games) has a huge hard-on for Beethoven. Even Catherine focused more on Handel/Holst/Chopin. It's tough out there for a Mozart fan.
