how much does it actually cost to charter those boats all the barça girls seem to be on right now? 😅 like is it something ”regular” spanish people do in summer?
oh yeah, in my experience it's quite common, but there are all types of options for all types of budgets. not everything is a super fancy yacht. and sometimes your school friends' parents have their own boat (which is the best case scenario!😅)
but i've done catamaran and smaller boat charters with friends and loved ones from around € 500-800 per group. when you split it up among a group of friends, it ends up being more economical and a lot of times they throw in lunch or snacks/drinks. that's why you'll often see friend groups on these charters like with patri/pina earlier this week and cata coll below. the ibiza-formentera route is pretty popular.
but also keep in mind that a lot of times these players are gifted trips by their agencies or resorts on the islands and that often includes these types of day trips on the water.
it's not just spain though. i've also had the same experience in greece. rented a private catamaran charter last summer in santorini and it ended up being around € 750-800 for 8 people with lunch/drinks.

Some of your anons were saying a while ago how her and Travis are travelling and exploring so much of Europe together. But that actually doesn't seem to be that true. And this is not meant to be a critique or anything.
If memory serves me right he was at the last Paris show right. They stayed in the city for one day and could have seen the Louvre together and that was it.
Then yeah they were at Lake Como, stayed at that fancy hotel and did the boat thing. Idk how much more they might have seen, cause it was like a 3 day thing
It's possible they were in Ibiza for 2-3 days after that. It was never confirmed, this was just things from the jet people
They have been staying in London on and off in between shows. Idk how much going out has been happening though. No sightings of them, besides that restaurant
And then there were people saying last week that they might have gotten back to Italy or gone to Athens for a bit, but again not really confirmed.
All in all, doesn't seem to be that much varied. After the Ireland shows they could have gone sightseeing but went back to London. Seems like same thing is happening/going to happen for Amsterdam. He's about to go off to the golf thing, so jury's out if he's still able to catch a Zurich show or later on in that city idk how to spell the name
lol no but exactly. They’re having more of a euro tour than T/J ever did because T/J never did a tour they both had time to do.

Gromverse short comics by Phobs part 2
The Gromverse as Beach Episode.
(This was published back in the summer, when Phobs was suffering from not being able to go on vacation)
Tumblr media
Ira: Who’s a good boy? Igor is a good boy! Catch the plate!
1) Ira and Igor, comments are unnecessary.
Tumblr media
2) Dima, Valik, Lilya and Seva are like those crazy people who are on their feet from 9 am, playing volleyball, riding boats, going to all the excursions in a row, never once sit down the whole day, and on evenings they are flexing at beach parties until dawn, and they do so every day, and no one knows if they sleep at all.
Tumblr media
3) Chrysalis turns into bacon in 5 minutes and exudes the vibe of the sanatorium “Ryabinka”*. Poet becomes perfectly bronzed in 5 minutes and exudes the vibe of Ibiza Deluxe, although he can barely scrape for the change to pay for a lounge.
Fireworshipper takes 5 minutes to steal a beach umbrella and twirls it against the sun all day
*I haven’t come across this expression myself, but I think what Phobs means here is somethink like sanatorium from USSR era that is very cheap and everything in it is very outdated. In other words, Chrysalis looks like those citizens of Russia, who huddle in cheap resorts and exude the vibe, which people disparagingly call a “village or kolkhoz style”.
(the Fireworshipper actually pays for all three of them on vacation, Chrysalis and Poet provide themselves only sunblounges and cocktails in the bars, let’s face it).
Tumblr media
4) Lera and Altan as “those fancy ones at it again” on their way to the stall behind the garage to chill at the nearest pier.
Tumblr media
5) Rivers decides to remember how they vacationed at the Sestroretsk resort in 1901, because mocontemporaries has begun to forget how well that group swims in striped bathing suits*.
*A reference to the Soviet movie “Striped Trip”, where the tigers escaped from the steamer and swam to the nearest beach, and one of the vacationers, noticing them, but not realizing that it’s tigers, says to his wife, “Nice swimming - that group over there in striped bathing suits.” It was Soviet meme of a sort:
youtube
Tumblr media
6) Seryoga and Oleg defiantly buy the most awful inflatable circles in a supermarket near the beach and hang out in them on the sea all vacation - you can not prevent them from living beautifully.

fly me to the moon
Rating: M-ish (a lil spicy at the end)
Pairing: Frankie Morales x f!reader
Warnings: Swearing, boner mention, a douchebag, a little hint at food shaming
Word count: 2.5k
Description: You go on a date with a complete asshole. He takes you on a helicopter tour, not expecting the pilot to be the one to sweep you off your feet.
Author’s note: Probably should have edited this more but meh. This was completely self-indulgent. Unbeta’d. Let me know what you think!

Why did I agree to go out with this jackass in the first place?
Your eyes were starting to feel sore with the amount of times you had rolled them throughout your date. He hadn’t noticed the exasperated movement of your eyes, too swept up in talking about the summer he spent in Ibiza with his former fraternity brothers, his medium rare, overpriced ribeye untouched.
So far, everything had felt off. The way he pulled up outside of your apartment and honked his horn to signal his arrival, the anchor cufflinks in his freshly pressed suit, paired with a pair of leather boat shoes and a salmon-pink button down. You loved a man in pink, but the rest of the outfit just felt like it didn’t fit together. Was he going to a wedding or going to party on a yacht? You had glanced down at your own outfit, a simple black dress that stopped mid-calf and hung loose, just barely hinting at your curves.
God, you hoped he wasn’t going to take you on a boat.
You had only agreed to this date in the first place because Liam, an investment banker who worked in your office building in the suite below yours, had asked you nearly every day for a month in a row. He was persistent, kind of like a mosquito, but you figured you were being too picky and needed to expand your horizons a bit. Maybe you would learn more about him and actually have a good time.
Not so much.
You couldn’t help but notice the way his brows knit together when you had ordered the fettuccine alfredo. The restaurant’s menu was pretty limited, and you didn’t recognize most of the items. This place was just too fancy for your comfort. You had wanted to call the waiter back to the table and change your order to a cheeseburger, just to embarrass him further.
As Liam droned on about how his father had taught him how to manage his finances, you let your mind wander to last weekend. You had gone out with your friends, Benny and Will, a pair of brothers who were each other’s polar opposites, yet they had a bond that was stronger than any other siblings you had ever met.
You were already well acquainted with their other friends, Santiago and Frankie, affectionately known as Pope and Catfish. Pope had a magnetic personality– he commanded the room without meaning to, sometimes to the detriment of others around him, who were trying to get a word in edgewise.
Frankie was complicated. He was quiet, a little rough around the edges, and a little gruff, but so soft at the same time. His eyes gave way to a deeply settled kind of hurt. They had drawn you in almost right away. It only took one glance at his smile, brilliant and boyish, with a hint of a dimple gracing his cheek, before you were hooked.
You had only known him for a few months now and only saw him when the guys got together, but you couldn’t deny the desire that clutched at your stomach whenever his deep brown eyes met yours.
You heard your date call your name, snapping you out of your daydream.
“You ready for part two of the best date ever?” Liam asked. His smirk was all wrong. It wasn’t soft or playful. It was polished and practiced. He reminded you too much of Patrick Bateman.
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” you said, pasting a smile onto your face, inwardly wincing at how fake it was. You could not wait to go home and put on your sweatpants.
Tumblr media
Shit. Holy shit.
He was taking you on a helicopter tour. The same company that Catfish worked for. Your stomach was in knots, threatening an unwelcome return of the alfredo you had for lunch.
Maybe he’s not working today, maybe we’ll get a different pil–
Of course you had no such luck. The guide ushered you both over towards the launching pad, where Frankie stood, wearing a tan flight suit. His hair was tousled, likely from being up in the air for most of the day and he had a pair of aviators on. He looked delectable.
His eyebrows shot up in recognition. He cocked his head to the side, glancing at your date, then back at you, a grimace set on his face.
Frankie schooled his expression and walked up and gave you a side hug, his hand squeezing your shoulder gently.
“Good to see you,” he said, giving you a small grin.
“You two know each other?” Liam asked, his eyes shifting between the two of you.
“Oh, yes, Liam– this is Frankie. He’s one of my friends.”
Friends.
“Nice to meet you, Liam,” Frankie said, shaking his hand politely.
Liam gave Frankie one of his wide, practiced grins. “Likewise.”
You could have sworn you saw Liam wince a little during the handshake, but you chalked it up to pre-flight jitters. Liam slung an arm around your shoulder possessively and chuckled.
“Excited to show this pretty lady some pretty sights.” His fingers curled into your shoulder, a little too hard, and he jostled you a little, trying to come off as a cute gesture. It had you feeling like a rag doll.
The smile you gave him must have been pretty forced, because Frankie coughed, interrupting the moment.
“All right, folks. Ready to get going?”
You nodded, feeling a fluttering in your belly. Despite not wanting to be stuck in a helicopter with Liam, you were excited to finally see Frankie in action.
Frankie handed you both a pair of headsets and instructed you to buckle up. Before climbing in himself, he checked Liam’s belt, tightening it a little and then came over to your side, adjusting your belt as well. You risked a peek at him out of the corner of your eye, noticing the way his Adam's apple bobbed up and down as he swallowed.
“All set,” he murmured, giving you a soft smile.
Before you knew it, Frankie was in the pilot’s seat and the helicopter roared to life. The blades were whirring above your heads, making your hair whip around your face. You tucked the sides of your dress under your legs, silently cursing Liam for not warning you of this afternoon’s non-dress appropriate activity.
The swoop you felt in your stomach was unlike anything you had felt before, more intense than a commercial flight. You tried not to fidget, knowing you were in good hands with Frankie piloting, but fuck, were you already high up, and only climbing higher by the second.
You briefly wondered how high up you were now, how high up Frankie had ever flown. You planned on asking him once you were all safely back on the ground.
A large gust of wind made its way into the helicopter, forcing a shiver down your spine, goosebumps rising on your woefully unprotected arms.
“You cold, sweetie?” Liam asked. “I would give you my jacket but I need it to stay warm. You should have planned better, gorgeous.”
You instantly clenched your teeth, wishing murder was legal at this very moment.
“Well, Liam, I would have brought a jacket if you had told me we were coming here,” you said, voice dripping with a sarcastic, syrupy sweet tone.
“I have a jacket in the compartment in front of you,” Frankie said, glancing over quickly. “Go ahead and put it on.”
You obliged, opening the compartment and bundling up in the oversized jacket, instantly feeling better once the corduroy material covered your arms. You wrapped it around your torso and took a deep breath, hiding your grin in the sherpa collar. It smelled like him.
“Thank you, ‘Fish,” you said softly. He didn’t respond, but you saw his dimple appear out of the corner of your eye.
“All good back there?” You heard Frankie’s voice in your ears. You looked over to him, only catching a glimpse of his hands and the side of his face, partially obscured by his headset and his baseball cap.
“Doing fan-tas-tic, Frank,” Liam whooped. You couldn’t help but wince at how loud his voice was, and how he intentionally pronounced Frankie’s name incorrectly.
“Great,” Frankie sounded unamused.
You huffed, annoyed at your date’s bad manners and looked out the window. Terrible date aside, you had to admit the bay from above was absolutely gorgeous. You looked down at the ocean, so expansive and eternally blue. Your eyes skimmed over to where water met land, at the soft sand on the beach, turning into a thick forest.
“Frankie, it’s beautiful,” you gasped.
You looked over at him briefly, seeing a hint of a smile on his face.
Liam was momentarily forgotten, until his hand snaked its way onto your thigh, giving it a little squeeze. Instinctually, you moved your leg at the unwanted contact. Liam looked over at you, an ugly scowl marring his face.
“Careful with the turns in this thing,” he said, addressing Frankie. “Our girl here ate about 15 pounds of pasta before this.”
You felt a hot wave of embarrassment wash over you, tears pricking at the corner of your eyes. They streaked down into your hairline from the force of the wind around you. You had already realized Liam was a bit of a douche, but you hadn’t thought him to be cruel.
“The only thing we have to worry about bringing this thing down is that big head of yours,” Frankie quipped back.
Biting back a laugh, you looked out the window so Liam wouldn’t see your reaction.
You could tell Liam wanted to argue back, but he stayed quiet, since the man he wanted to lash out at was responsible for keeping you all alive at the moment.
The rest of the ride was pretty quiet, other than the persistent chopping of the helicopter blades. The views were beautiful, but you found your eyes wandering back over to Frankie every few minutes. The tanned skin of his hands as he deftly worked at the throttle. Every time he pulled on a control you saw the veins in his forearms strain with the movement. You wondered what else those hands could do.
Before you knew it, the bird touched down and you unbuckled your seatbelt, removing the tight headset from your ears. You had a slight headache and you could tell getting down was going to be a struggle.
Frankie seemed to have no issue, jumping out of his seat with grace and walking over to your side to help you down. Your legs were shaking, so you stumbled as your feet hit the ground, grabbing onto his broad shoulders for dear life.
“I– oof, sorry,” you laughed nervously, rubbing your nose. You had bumped into his chest nearly smashing your face into his sternum. Frankie bit his lip and chuckled in response, squeezing your waist. You felt dizzy with his arms caging you in like this. It gave you an overwhelming desire to wrap yourself around him, to feel him pressed against you.
“It’s okay, I got you.” His voice rumbled in your ear, absolutely sending your senses on a tailspin. His strong, quiet voice was doing something magical to your already weak knees.
You stepped away before you fell over, remembering your date after a moment. He was about ten feet away, arms crossed, his face pinched in an angry expression.
“I don’t think this is working out,” he said as you walked over to him.
“I couldn’t agree more,” you said, giving him a sickly sweet grin. “I’ll find another ride home.”
Liam scoffed and made his way back into the tour center to grab his belongings. You instantly felt a weight lift off your shoulders. Thank God he left.
“So, why did you go out with that asshole, anyways?” Frankie asked, a bewildered expression on his face.
You sighed, feeling embarrassed.
“I honestly don’t know. He wouldn’t leave me alone so I decided to give him a shot.”
“I can’t say I blame him for being persistent, but seriously, fuck that guy.”
You huffed a laugh.
“Seriously, when he made that comment about what you ate for lunch I wanted to throw him right out of the helicopter.”
You bit your lip and sniffed, feeling the embarrassment wash over you at the memory.
“I’m sorry you had to hear that,” your voice was small and you rubbed at your arms nervously.
Frankie had a hard, angry look on his face. It made you feel a little giddy, that he was so angry on your behalf.
“He should have never talked to you that way. He’s lucky you agreed to go out with his sorry ass.”
“You’re right. And God, I can’t believe he took me here, of all places,” you laughed. This really was surreal.
“Feels kind of like fate, huh?” He said, giving you a boyish grin.
“How so?”
“Well,” he stepped towards you, arms sliding up the material of his jacket. “I’ve always wanted to see you in this jacket.” His gaze made its way down your figure. His eyes were dark as he swallowed heavily.
“And I’ve always wanted to go on a date with you, though not while you’re on one with another man.” The smile he gave you was shy, searching, as if he wasn’t sure how you’d react.
“Well, I won’t be making that mistake again,” you replied, stepping closer.
Your tongue came out to wet your lips and Frankie watched with rapture.
“I’d like to kiss you now, if that’s okay.” His mouth was an inch from yours, and his large, calloused hands cradled your face gently.
“Please, Frankie,” you sighed.
His lips were soft, despite the bruising urgency in his actions. Your hands immediately tangled into his hair, knocking the cap off his head. You melted against him and licked his bottom lip, asking for permission. He immediately complied, licking into your mouth. Your tongues found a delicious rhythm, tangling together. You moaned into his mouth, spurring him on further. His hips pressed into yours. You could feel how hard he was, even through his flight suit.
“Fuck, baby” he rasped, pulling away. His chest was heaving, breath ragged from your kiss. “The things I want to do to you.”
You slanted your hips back into his, pressing into his erection. “Then do them.”
Frankie bit his lip and groaned, pressing his forehead to yours.
“You’re absolutely perfect for me, you know that?”
You grinned, leaning forward to capture his lips again.
“I want to do this right, though,” he said. “I’m going to take you out on a better date. Show you how first dates should go. And then I’m going to take you home and show you how much I’ve wanted you for months.”
You felt as if your heart had stopped momentarily.
“That sounds perfect to me,” you said, kissing him again.

What kind of dates and/or honeymoon do you think Kuroo and Iwaizumi would plan/prefer with their s/o?
I want to date the both of them and these feel inadequate I’m sorry.
[under the cut]
Kuroo Tetsurou
He does date planning and sight-seeing with his s/o very spontaneously. He likes the surprise of their time together since everything else is always a routine for them.
One of your first dates would be to an animal shelter. He loved seeing your face light up seeing all the puppies and kitten waiting to be adopted. He felt bad when you wanted to take one home but couldn’t because of certain circumstances, but he reminded himself to remember with pet was your favorite so he can gift the animal to you on another day.
When you get married to him expect a road trip around Europe. One of his favorite stops was Ibiza because of the city nightlife. Bar-hopping was a definite must for the both of you while you were there. Also forget about any type of fancy restaurants, because your diet with mainly consist of all of the street foods you can manage to eat with a little bit of room service mixed in because Kuroo likes to “sleep-in” a lot. ;)
Last stop you both would make on the trip is to the Colosseum. Kuroo is a complete science nerd but he definitely loves his history, too. Expect him to explain to you all of the displays before you even get to read it because even though you guys have been together for a long time and are even married now he still loves to impress you.
Iwaizumi Hajime
He’s the type to like a date that’s a bit more private but still not confined between four walls. So expect lot’s of picnics or a drive-in theater.
Iwaizumi likes to have everything planned out to a T because he doesn’t have much of a liking towards unexpected events, so for your first date he planned it out from dawn to dusk because he wanted it to be perfect since he wants to impress you.
It would definitely start off with a cute little breakfast at any small coffee shop you liked, and it would end with you both laying in the trunk of his truck un a field under the stars. Definitely a picnic type of person with he’s with his s/o. Its not to extravagant but the intimacy is what makes it special for the both of you.
When married, the first place he wants to go is the Caribbean Islands. Maybe even through a Disney Cruise, but he’d surprise you with those tickets. He’s loves the water and boat rides so the cruise would also be a plus for him. Definitely going to be in the first class, so imagine the room service.
Likes the fact that the time you spent together felt more intimate because you both got to try a lot of firsts on the cruise (in more ways than one). Expect him to take A LOT of photos of the both of you. He wants to document as much as possible because he wants to “preserve the moment.” He’d be that secret artsy person that’s obsessed with polaroids of you two together.

The Lads Holiday
There is of course an immediate issue in the title of the blog, the assignation of the term ‘lads’. We certainly were many things as a group but lads probably wasn’t one of them, the only time the you’d ever see Tom in Ibiza Uncovered would be discussing property prices and you wouldn’t even get Tim onto the plane without dousing him in factor 50 and offering him unlimited rum.  I have been on ‘lads’ holidays, of which many were pretty enjoyable; the problem is that as you get older, your capacity for enjoyment versus your recovery time starts to inverse and only get worse (insert your own joke here).
The idea of a lads holiday has surfaced again with the imminent approach of the big 4-0, Vegas has been mooted, Oktoberfest has been discussed, even a narrow boat trip rental, albeit without my credit card on the deposit this time so it got me thinking a little down memory lane.
Tumblr media
The earliest trips we did as a group of friends were down to Cornwall, mostly because Nick’s parents already had a house there and it helped with our extremely limited finances at the time. There was, I recall a lot of drinking combined with a great deal of table tennis in the downstairs garage. I was mostly drinking cider at the time so we ended up picking dubious products like ‘Cripple Cock’ scrumpy and drinks of which there was no doubt at all about their terrible nature like red aftershock.
The house was in a quiet part of Cornwall where the only nightclub was a ramshackle shed attached to the local pub (avg age 50+) and where we persistently visited one pub every year because Nick had once seen some women he fancied drinking in there for about two hours in an afternoon.
Still we had a lot of fun with other activities, body boarding, crazy golf, croquet, these were wild times. We nearly went for a night out in Newquay but since the only two people with cars refused to spend an entire evening ferrying the rest of the group around it fell through.
The first ‘proper’ lads trip came about for hazy reasons but I recall there was a great deal of discussion about beer drinking in Germany and train adventures one evening in Fleet and then like all the best adventures we made a complete hash of booking it.
Tumblr media
In the end we flew out to Prague and checked into a fairly adequate hostel called Apple in the middle of the town centre. I say only fairly because on our first evening there Nick managed to jump onto my bed and fall straight through it, having seen his repair jobs before I slept half expecting him to come through the top bunk towards me but it was an incident we avoided fortunately, particularly given the point below
Prague was not without its romantic encounters, or encounters certainly anyway so I guess on that basis alone it qualifies for a boys trip although quite why Tom chose to bring up the American civil war with a group of girls in a bar remains somewhat of a mystery to this day.  We did make it to Germany in the end, via Austria and the train journey from hell thanks to a mixing between the German for sleeping carriage and then German for a standard carriage. It still provides much merriment to this day but locking four six foot men in for spooning is an activity I never wish to repeat.  We only managed two days in Germany since, thanks to letting Nick book our return tickets it transpired we were returning from Prague not Berlin although in hindsight I have my suspicions there were other factors involved.
Tumblr media
We did many other trips as well, most popular of which were the narrow boat adventures. These were holidays on my parents boat, invariably dressed as pirates and heading to Guildford along the River Wey. When you consider the journey is around 8 miles as the crow flies yet it took three days as a round journey it tells you a lot about the speed of narrow boats. The second night of these trips was always an evening out in Guildford, I’m pretty sure we only did an evening dressed as pirates the once but they were usually following on from a full day of beers and entertainment on board the boat so I can’t be sure.
All I can say is that as Captain, my orders were clearly obeyed without question and I ran a tight ship. There were of course other officers onboard, First Mate Tim, in charge of rum, Bosun Tom, in charge of navigation (forwards or backwards) and Cabin Boy Kieran demoted to Ships Biscuit and replaced by Nick at Cabin Boy rank after the South African debacle.
The narrow boat trips were probably my favourite weekends away, they had all the constituent parts of a lads weekend, beers, nights out, endless stories but they were also fun, just a group of guys spending time together and letting the world go by which I guess is what all the lads weekends away are really.
Maybe we will end up in Vegas for the big 40, I certainly hope so but I do think the important thing of any lads weekend is not the destination but the people you travel there with.

19 Best Things To Do In Majorca – Hand Luggage Only
Nestled within the Mediterranean Sea, Majorca (or Mallorca) is one incredible island that’s so beautiful to see. Not only that, but there’s also a heap fo the best things to do in Majorca that are surprisingly diverse and totally unique.
You see, Majorca is an island that’s got a little something for everyone! It’s the kind of place where you can hike the mountain ranges, explore the best beaches and visit the historic little villages. It really is beautiful and totally worth heading around the whole island.
In some areas of Majorca, you can be forgiven to thinking you’re in the Norwegian Fjords, at other times, the stunning Greek islands. It’s totally diverse!
Also, it’s worth remembering that Majorica is much bigger than its neighbouring islands, Ibiza and the quieter Menorca. It’s is the kind of place that’s best explored by foot and car, which gives a huge amount of freedom to explore.
After all, the island is the largest of the Balearic Islands and quite expansive, too. Trust me, you’ll realise how big Majorca is once you arrive.
With that in mind, take a look at some of the best things to do in Majorca. Have the best trip!
1.) Palma
Definitely the biggest city in Majorca, Palma is a pretty cool place to go if you want to find some cool bars, restaurants and a heap of history.
Once here, make sure to explore the incredible Cathedral of Majorca that’s so imposing. Though, it’s so huge it’s kinda hard to miss when you’re wandering the city.
Oh, and remember you can go on a tour and scale the terraces of the Cathedral of Majorca; the views are immense. It’s easily one of the best things to do in Majorca if you love stunning views.
Afterwards, head across to the castle and also be sure to visit Palau de l’Almudaina, too. The latter is a great way to explore the Arabesque and Moorish influences on the island.
Oh, and be sure to visit the Arab Baths that are perched in the city.
Now, there’s a small entrance fee and the site is pretty small but it’s well worth visiting if you’re interested in the thousands of years of history. Now, you’ll likely only spend 10-minutes wandering and is easy to include when wandering the city.
If all that exploring has left you hungry, head over to Infineat that serves up some of the tastiest dishes. Their duck is so good!
2.) Soller
Relatively near the north-west coastline, Soller is a lovely town to explore whilst in this area of the island. Not only that, but you can also easily partner a trip to Soller with Fornalutx that’s just down the valley.
After arriving, be sure to stroll and spot the Ferrocarril de Soller that you can pop on and explore, too. Afterwards, head over to Saint Bartomeu’s Church and explore the historic centre of the town.
Plus, make sure to check out the exhibitions museum of Picasso and Joan Miró, too.
3.) Alcudia Bay
Visiting Alcudia, and its bay is easily one of the best things to do in Majorca if you want a stunning beach. Yes, it might be a little busier than the little coves but it’s a totally gorgeous area and well worth a visit if you’re already in the north-east of the island.
Also, it’s worth remembering that you can actually hop on the boat in Alcudia to visit Barcelona for a day or two. It’s a great way to see both places, especially if you’ve travelled far to visit Majorca.
Oh, and be sure to grab some panades once you’re here. They’re yummy!
4.) Valldemossa
Nestled on the North Coast of Majorca, Valldemossa is only about 25-minutes from Palma and totally easy to visit in your rental car.
It’s such a picturesque little spot and one of the best things to do in Majorca if you love historic little villages.
After arriving, make sure to explore the Carthusian Monastery, the church of Saint Bartomeu and the Sa Cova Restaurant for some of the tastiest tapas.
You’ll love it.
5.) Pollenca
Not too far from Alcudia Bay, Pollenca is a stunning little village that’s really gorgeous to visit when exploring Majorca.
Now, one of the best areas of Pollenca to see has to be the 365 Calvari Steps that are totally stunning.
Also, there’s the intimate little Museum of Pollenca that’s well worth visiting if you want to explore more of the village history. It’s pretty small, so don’t expect a huge complex but it’s a lovely little spot if you love museums.
Plus, if you’re getting some rumbles in your tummy pop into La Trencadora that’s incredible for lunch. Totally love this place.
6.) Deia
Right on the north of the island, exploring Deia is one of the best things to do in Majorca if you’re travelling the northern coastal routes.
This hilltop village is hundreds of years old and one of the most picturesque spots in the north of the island. Now, as with most villages, it’s small but it’s a lovely little place to stretch your legs as part of a winder road trip.
Though be warned, it can be tricky to park!
After arriving, pop into Cafè Sa Fonda that’s so cute and the dishes are homemade and totally tasty.
Also, if you’re wanting to stay in the village, check in to the Belmond La Residencia, it’s so gorgeous and made up old two historic manor houses. Now, it can much more pricey than other spots in Majorca, so make sure you know this before booking.
7.) Torrent de Pareis
Another area in the north of Majorca, Torrent de Pareis is a great place for a hike, especially if you’re already stopping in Sa Calobra.
Now, it can get pretty busy at peak times, so go early in the morning if you want to miss most of the crowds. Now, it’s not the best place for food, so I’d suggest giving the restaurants a miss here and gorge once you visit your next stop.
Also, be sure to see the views from the Sa Calobra Viewpoint. It’s lovely.
8.) Hike the Tramuntana mountains
Now, there’s a huge amount of incredible hiking trails in Majorca, with the  Ruta de Pedra en Sec (dry stone route) being totally incredible.
Now, the whole length of the hike goes almost 100km across the Tramuntana mountains, which are so stunning. Honestly, it feels like you’ve actually arrived in the fjords of Norway, it’s that impressive.
Now, there’s a number of trails that are totally stunning with the lake of Cuber in the distance. For instance, check out the Coll de L’Ofre and Puig de sa Rateta routes. It really is one of the best things to do in Majorca.
Though, as with all hikes, prep safely, take enough water and always listen to local safety advice.
9.) Selva
Nestled within the Tramuntana mountain, exploring the tiny village of Selva is well worth stopping for a little look around. Hop off the main road and head straight up to Selva for a little explore, it’s one of the best things to do in Majorca if you’ve got a hankering for tiny little towns.
Oh, and for a tasty lunch, pop into Miceli, they’ll serve you up a treat of tasty tapas.
10.) Cala Figuera
Visiting Cala Figuera is easily one of the best things to do in Majorca if you love a stunning and historic village. Not only that, but it’s also a great area to stay whilst exploring the wider area, too.
Now, it can be quite hilly and pretty difficult to park but it’s worth the hassle. The harbour area dates back 700 years and is well worth taking a stroll or stopping off at one of the bayside cafes.
11.) Canyamel
If it’s a more relaxing day you’re after, relaxing on the beaches of Canyamel is easily one of the best things to do in Majorca. Plus, the whole coastline around this area is totally stunning.
Also, nearby, you can call in at Cala Millor and Sa Coma if you fancy some more beach fun! It’s worth remembering, these spots have quite a few hotels, so you can easily stay here. Though, that does mean you’re not going to have a beach to yourself. In the summer months, it can get pretty busy.
12.) Calo Des Moro
Almost hidden away, in a small cove, visiting Calo Des Moro is gorgeous.
Yes, the roads and route to the beach can be tricky and it’s certainly not the most accessible of spots but it’s so lovely to visit and really worth a visit whilst exploring this region of Majorca.
The waters are easily the best in all of Majorca and they’re crystal clear. Also, on your walk to the beach (from the tiny parking area) you might even smell the wild saffron growing.
13.) Drive the MA-2141
The MA-2141 really gets interesting around this point, and is well worth driving, especially if you want to see a totally different side to Majorca.
Now, you might think it looks pretty hair-raising to drive, but the roads are in great condition and it’s really easy. Plus, there are lots of little stopping points to take in the views.
To be honest, it’s not too far from Sa Calobra and you’ll likely drive along this road if you’re heading here.
14.) Cap de Formentor
Okay, for me, seeing Cap de Formentor is one of the best things to do in Majorca, especially if you love a good viewpoint!
You see, Cap de Formentor is perched right on the edge of the eastern peninsula which makes it a great place to catch a sunrise.
After arriving, take in the views from El Colomer that is so picturesque. Also, Cala Figuera is another stunning little bay to take a dip, the waters are crystal clear here.
There’s also a great viewpoint from Mirador and the lovely, Formentor Hotel that’s a little pricier than the average but totally stunning.
Alternatively, it’s totally easy to visit from Alcudia and well worth the trip if you’ve decided to stay there instead. Even if you miss the sunrise!
15.) Felanitx
Falanitx, is one lovely little place to stop if you’re already visiting Caló del Moro. Now, you might only spend a few hours exploring but it’s a totally lovely place to visit, especially as you’ll see the Sanctuary of Sant Salvado, too.
Plus, it’s a great place to stop for lunch, too. You’ll find lots of little family-owned restaurants.
16.) Palma Nova
Palma Nova was probably one of the very first hotel-spots on the island and one that still attracts the crowds today. It’s totally one of the best things to do in Majorca if you want a lovely beach and easy access to lots of restaurants and bars.
Though, if you want something quieter and historic, you might wanna give this spot a miss. After all, it really depends on what type of holiday you’re looking for.
If you are looking for an out-of-this-world hotel, check into the St. Regis Mardavall that’s right next to Palma Nova. Again, prices can be higher than the average, so consider this before booking.
17.) Manacor
Manacor is a relatively large inland town in Majorca, with lots going on, too.
For instance, every Monday morning, they have one of the biggest markets in all of Majorca, plus a heap of gorgeous pottery stalls and places to shop.
Plus, there’s a Rafa Nadal Museum if you’re into tennis. Though, you might find this a bore if you’re not.
Also, don’t forget about the nearby Drach Caves, too. They’re so dramatic and well worth visiting if you want some time out of the sun!
18.) Fornalutx
Not too far from the hilly town of Soller, it’s easy to partner a visit to Fornalutx as a wider trip to see some of Majorca’s stunning hilltop towns.
They’re all so quaint and historic, especially Fornalutx which is one of the best things to do in Majorca when you’re looking for the more authentic side of island life.
Now, you can either drive between the towns themselves or take the trails and footpaths that can be easiest when parking is tricky.
Once here, be sure to explore the stoned cottages and tiny streets that make Fornalutx so quaint. It’s such a stunning and sleepy little place.
19.) Campanet
Around 30-minutes from Palma, on the main road to Alcudia, is Campanet. It’s a tiny little village that’s lovely to stop when driving across the island, especially if you’re hankering for some grub.
I love Restaurant Talent that’s so intimate and the food is so good!
Plus, if you’re looking for a more traditional lodging, check into Monnaber Vell, that’s totally rustic and lovely. Situated in a historic villa, it’s also got the most lovely pool. Totally tranquil and so gorgeous.

Best New Luxury Cruises 2020: Bahamas, Japan, Subantartic
(Bloomberg) –The Caribbean still reigns supreme when it comes to cruising, but there’s a whole new world to explore. Classic ports such as the Bahamas are recovering, new itineraries are opening up in Japan for the 2020 Summer Olympics, and luxury options abound in the Seychelles. Here are eight places to prioritize in 2020.
Japan
Remember when Olympic organizers in Rio de Janeiro slept on cruise ships and called them “floating hotels”? Tokyo will do the same for its turn in the spotlight. From July 24 to Aug. 9, the city is chartering at least one large ship to serve as a floating hotel in response to a shortage of rooms on dry land. But you’d be better off going a more traditional route: Two of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.’s Shanghai-based ships, Spectrum of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas, will offer itineraries that overnight at Tokyo’s new terminal. Passengers with tickets can easily get to events and then sail on to other, less frenetic parts of the country.
Windstar Cruises LLC is betting that the summer’s television coverage will drum up tourism interest for Japan in general, so it’s skipping the marquee games and sending its 312-passenger, all-suite Star Breeze to the country for a series of temple- and garden-centric sailings this fall. But the most peaceful way to sail might be a three-night trip on Guntû, a 38-passenger design ship that’s like a floating ryokan on the Seto Inland Sea, complete with traditional open-air onsen baths in some of its suites.
The trip we’re most likely to book: Star Breeze 10-night sailing, from $3,599 per person.
The Bahamas
Typically cruise lines have relied heavily on the Bahamas. Not only is Nassau, the capital, a frequent port of call, but several companies have organized sailings throughout the commonwealth around islands that they own. In the last year, however, the roles have changed. After Hurricane Dorian devastated Grand Bahama (also a cruise port) and the less-visited Abaco islands, cruise companies helped deliver recovery supplies and made major donations. In the storm’s aftermath, they’re helping revitalize the entire Bahamian tourism economy.
Royal Caribbean is opening the second phase of its $250 million Perfect Day at CocoCay island in January. The Coco Beach Club includes the first overwater floating cabanas in the region. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. has boosted the offerings at its Great Stirrup Cay, a chic, South Beach-style beach oasis where you can shell out as much as $1,100 a day for a private, air-conditioned villa conveniently located near a Moet & Chandon bar. MSC Cruises’ recently opened, 95-acre Ocean Cay offers a more tranquil experience that focues on spa treatments and underwater activities in its protected marine reserve. And when adults-only Virgin Voyages debuts its first ship in March, every sailing will stop at a swanky private resort—think Ibiza or St-Tropez—developed by Resorts World Bimini.
The trip we’re most likely to book: A four-night itinerary on Virgin’s Scarlet Lady, from $2,750.
Kinsale, Ireland
Cruise lines are jumping on the DNA tourism trend, and harbor towns in West Cork, including the historic fishing town of Kinsale, are trying to get a piece of the pie. Promotional efforts have focused on attracting small expedition and boutique ships, and they’re paying off. Last year, French line Ponant sent one ship; this year it’s sending four. Ultraluxury line Seabourn has been sniffing around, too. Nearby attractions include a 3.7-mile trail around the ocean cliffs of the Old Head of Kinsale, where the Lusitania was sunk just offshore by a German U-boat in 1915. There’s also a star-shaped fort built by Charles II. And if you find through an ancestry search that you’re related to the notorious 18th-century pirate Captain Anne Bonny, Kinsale is said to be where she’s from.
The trip we’re most likely to book: A seven-night sailing from London to Portsmouth, from $3,830.
Read: Summer of Cruising
The Douro River, Portugal
Lisbon is a popular port, but attention has also shifted north to the quieter Portuguese city of Porto, famous for its sweet red fortified wine. It’s also becoming a popular starting point for cruises on the Douro River. Hillsides covered in terraced vineyards and historic quintas reflect 2,000 years of winemaking in the valley, with itineraries that include stops for tastings and time to cross the border toward the medieval city of Salamanca in northwestern Spain. Luxury tour operator Tauck Inc. and luxury brand Uniworld River Cruises are each debuting ships in the spring: Uniworld’s 100-passenger S.S. São Gabriel has butler-serviced suites, Douro-influenced decor, and locally sourced cuisine; Tauck’s 84-passenger MS Andorinha features an infinity-style pool, outdoor dining, and Balinese daybeds on the sun deck. Dinner at a family-owned wine estate near the sleepy village of Pinhão is included.
The trip we’re most likely to book: One-week Tauck Villages and Vintages itinerary, from $4,190.
Raja Ampat Islands
Far from the fancy resorts in Bali—in miles, scenery, and style—this Indonesian archipelago occupies an enviable position in the center of the Coral Triangle. Cruises here lead to fascinating cultural encounters, but the big attraction is the warm sea, home to about 75% of known coral species and about half of all the world’s marine tropical fish. Typically the best way to see it all has been on small dive boats, but upscale expedition cruise ships from Ponant and Australian line Coral Expeditions have recently moved in. Joining them is Aqua Expeditions, best known for its top-notch Amazon River sailings. It transformed a naval vessel into its first ocean ship, the 15-suite yacht Aqua Blu, on which it offers a culinary program designed by Aussie superstar chef Benjamin Cross and sailings that stretch through the winter.
The trip we’re most likely to book: One week on Aqua Blu, from $7,525.
Subantarctic Islands
These islands in the Southern Ocean, which are on the way to Antarctica from Australia and New Zealand, are protected nature preserves, where only researchers live among birds and marine mammals. On Macquarie Island, beaches may be covered with royal penguins and fur seals. The island also has a weird geologic feature: Some of its shores are piled up with exposed green rocks from the Earth’s mantle that look eerily like they’re covered in snakeskin. And the Snares, one of several chains of New Zealand islands, feature crested penguins endemic to the islands. Cruise passengers visit on zodiacs that hug the shoreline or make a landing for guided walks, all in places where the number of visitors is tightly controlled. Get here on expedition ships from Silversea Cruise Holding Ltd. or Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, which have new itineraries traversing the region.
The trip we’re most likely to book: A two-week cruise round trip from Dunedin (on New Zealand’s South Island) on Silver Explorer, from $13,950.
The Seychelles
Luxurious options abound in this Indian Ocean paradise off of East Africa. Crystal Cruises’ 62-passenger superyacht, Crystal Esprit, has suites with butler service and a private submarine. Ponant’s 184-passenger Le Bougainville has a snazzy, underwater Blue Eye Lounge, somewhat like a submarine with a panoramic view and where you can get a martini. But the real beauty of sailing here is taking tiny zodiacs to islands with uninhabited beaches, where you may snorkel among coral reefs or wander past tortoises in lush forests. Keep an eye out for the Seychelles warbler and other native birds, as well as Vallée de Mai, a rare palm forest little changed since prehistoric times.
The trip we’re most likely to book: A seven-night trip on Crystal Esprit, from $5,599.
Nile River
In January, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises launches the new 84-passenger, all-suite S.S. Sphinx, and because it will only sail in Egypt, its look will have an authentic sense of place. (Think Egyptian fabrics and artworks.) Similarly, Viking River Cruises in September adds the 82-passenger Viking Osiris, done up in Scandinavian design despite her Nubian name. Standard 12-day sailings on both ships start and end in Aswan, usually after a hotel stay in Cairo and a flight to Luxor. For DIY types, there are also four-night sailings to Aswan on Sanctuary Retreats’ elegant, recently upgraded, 64-passenger Sanctuary Nile Adventurer. Its shorter sailings aren’t packaged with pre- and post-cruise land experiences and are a little more flexible. This year, especially, a must-do is drinks on the terrace of Aswan’s Old Cataract Hotel, where Agatha Christie wrote parts of her 1937 novel Death on the Nile. Kenneth Branagh’s film based on the book will debut in theaters in the fall.
The trip we’re most likely to book: Four nights on the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, from $1,410.

8 Great Party Destinations to Put on Your Bucket List 8 Great Party Destinations to Put on Your Bucket List
Sometimes a holiday is all about relaxing- putting your feet up and enjoying a couple of weeks in the sunshine and not doing much. But it doesn’t have to be like this, and if you prefer a more active kind of getaway then why not visit a party destination? Maybe you’ve just finished university and want to party, perhaps it’s your hen or stag party and you want to celebrate in style or maybe you just want to let your hair down. There are places in the world that are well known for entertainment and nightlife, so regardless of what you’re celebrating you’re sure to have an amazing time and make it an occasion to remember. Just be sure to do your research beforehand, and don’t just assume that everywhere will be open all year as many places will have a high and low season. Lots of the party venues will be closed for a number of months so you’ll need to know when the best time to go is as well as the destination. But here are some of the best places across the world to consider.
Ibiza
When you think about going to a party destination, one of the first places that probably springs to mind is Ibiza. It’s home to some of the most famous clubs in the world, from Pacha to Space Ibiza to Amnesia. If you’re looking for a place to drink and dance the night away then you cant go far wrong here. The clubbing season in Ibiza runs from May to October, with special occasions like new year’s eve also being popular. During the off season, Ibiza is much more relaxed, you can enjoy the scenery, stunning beaches, shops, markets and so much more.
Thailand
Thailand is well known for its incredible nightlife with many tourists flocking to the capital Bangkok, famous for its swanky rooftop bars and trendy clubs. The Pattaya nightlife and party scene is well loved by tourists visiting Thailand, a great choice if you’re after something a little more saucy! From the ladyboys of Bangkok to adult style nightclubs it’s likely to be a lot different to anywhere else in the world you’ve been. There are numerous bars and nightclubs, cabaret shows and live music across the city to keep you entertained- the drinks will most definitely keep on flowing.
Las Vegas
If you’re looking to party then it doesn’t get any better than Vegas, a destination which is known for its nightlife and entertainment. You have casinos and bars, shows and nightclubs, you could attend a yacht party, throw a pool party or whatever other party you felt like! If it’s mainly the casinos that interest you then there are other options aside from Vegas, the Borgata for example would give you the same electric atmosphere and the chance to win big! In Vegas you have the benefit of the gorgeous scorching hot weather and plenty to do during the day as well as at night. Well worth adding to your travel bucket list.
Amsterdam
Amsterdam is rich in culture and heritage, being home to museums such as the Anne Frank house and Van Gough Museum, but it also has a fun party atmosphere too- this means that just about everyone can enjoy the destination and find something they like to do. Along with its stunning waterways, the Netherlands capital of Amsterdam is known for its incredible nightlife.  Electro music is popular here, with the Amsterdam Dance Event being hosted here annually, it’s one of the biggest club events anywhere in the world. There’s no shortage of clubs and bars, and whether you want to listen to dance music or hear a live band play, there’s something for you. Amsterdam is famed for its ‘cannabis culture’ with tons of coffeeshops all around the city- which can be something a little different you could try while you were away if you so wished. Just be aware of the law, you will need to be over eighteen (or twenty one in some establishments) and have your passport with you to take part in this. You can only enter the same coffee shop twice in one day, and few other things that are worth being aware of so do some research if this is part of your itinerary.
Dublin
The Irish know how to party, and Dublin is an ideal destination if you want to drink some alcohol and party the night away. From big clubs like The Sugar Club and Club M to lots of traditional Irish pubs, ‘late bars’ and fancier wine bars and restaurants- there’s more than enough nightlife to keep you occupied in Dublin. The Irish tend to be stereotyped as liking a good alcoholic drink, but alcohol is part of the heritage with brewing having a long history in the country, it’s worth knowing that Dublin is home to the largest brewery in the world (something you can visit on your trip) manufacturing 1.2 million barrels of Guinness a year. Whether you want to drink Guinness or learn more about it, Dublin is a fantastic city. There are castles, parks, cathedrals and plenty of other cool stuff to do during the day too. .
London
London is brimming with amazing nightlife, you have huge clubs like Fabric and Cargo to ‘hidden’ bars, comedy clubs, rooftop and cocktail bars. There are even floating bars on the Thames, the city really does have all you could possibly want from a party destination. Another way you can enjoy the party vibe as well as getting to know more about a destination is to attend a festival, and London is home to plenty of them. This will take some planning, as of course they’ll only be held on certain days of the year. So booking the trip, as well as your tickets with plenty of time will help to avoid disappointment. Whole streets, towns and cities can be lit up with lights, decorations and music with plenty of delicious food and drinks on offer. If you have a location in mind, search online and see what kinds of festivals they host and whether these match up with the dates you’d like to go away.Whether you’re from the UK or coming from abroad, there’s plenty to do and a great destination to consider if you want the drinks to be flowing all night. As all of the nightlife, culture, markets shops and parks, there are lots of green spaces and tourist attractions too to keep you busy during the dat.
Los Angeles
One way to enjoy some gorgeous scenery and soak up some sunshine while partying the day away would be to book a boat party- and LA is the perfect place for this. What better way to spend a day could there possibly be than in the sunshine than with music and dancing, incredible views and the wind in your hair! Decide if it’s a private party you’re after or if you want to join a big group, there are plenty of opportunities at different budgets to do this all over the world. Sunshine, music, alcohol and great company- what could be better? There are plenty of tours for things like dolphin cruises where the wild dolphins will surf the waves of the boat, and glass bottom boats allowing you to get a fascinating look under the surface to make your experience even more spectacular too.
Prague
Known for its stunning cityscapes and cheap beer, lots of tourists flock to Prague for boozy breaks. Budwar, Pilsner Urquell and Staropramen are some of the most famous, but there are tons of cheap beer options and Czech beer is some of the best in the world. There are tons of cool pubs and bars all over the city meaning it’s easy to hop from place to place, all while taking in incredible European architecture. If you get time on your trip and fancy a break from the drinking and partying, you could hire a car one day and take a drive out of the city and further into the stunning Czech Republic. Expect to see mountains, lakes and woods and pass through ‘olde worlde’ traditional villages and towns.
The next time you’re planning a special occasion, why not consider travelling to one of these places to party?

A Med Sailing Expedition
Let me tell you a story about sailing the Med. In short, it takes freaking forever. Keep reading.
I realize it's been months since I've written anything so here it goes.
The last thing I wrote was that we had arrived in Greece and we were going to spend 3 months living in the house. And that's exactly what we did. It was a fabulous retreat from the boat and living on the water. The house is gorgeous, up in the hills. We made friends with the kitties and they took a liking to us as well. We fell in love with them and thankfully, Mike's sister was able to take one of them back to Canada where he is happily living, getting fat. We spent many days cycling to and fro, regularly to Karvelas (8km), to Pierros Restaurant, a great family friend. Sometimes all the way to Gytheio (12km). We made regular appearances at the bakery in Vathi, to enjoy the spinach feta pies (we highly recommend)and their delectable chocolate cake.
We fell into a nice rhythm at the house and as the days got cooler, we started having fires in the wood stove to keep the house toasty warm. A fire creates such a lovely ambience in a room and we enjoyed every minute of it. So did the cats. They would curl up on chairs in front of the fire and then at the bottom of our bed when it was time for sleep.
I tried to get an extension visa to stay in Greece for an extra 3 months but they wouldn't do it so then we had to plan to set sail again. Our checkout date was Nov 23, 2018. So we did our provisioning and water fill up. Topped up the fuel and then watched the weather. We said our goodbyes to some of the locals we had gotten to know, like Yanni, who owns the beach restaurant in Vathi called Ostria. He was a super cool guy who regularly helped us out by keeping an eye on the boat, letting us fill up our water and use his wifi. We found out that he knew Mike's parents well and had actually bought the camper that his parents used to own. The one that Mike remembers doing trips in with them.
We started sailing, but the weather proved difficult, so we made it to Kotranas and ended up having to wait there for a few days before trying to get anywhere else. While we were there, Pierros came down and we had ouzo and beer together for a final drink. He even brought me an extra bottle of his oh-so-good pomegranate liquer, which is just irresistible and very easy to drink quickly.
The second night in Kotranas, we ended up having some strong wind and swell so we moved into a small little bay called Alupa, which is a majestic spot, with high cliff walls and a pretty beach. The water was such a beautiful blue colour it was surreal. They even filmed a movie on this beach. We spent a few days in there waiting out the rough weather.
Finally, we had a break so we pushed for the point of the peninsula, which is Porto Kagio. We made it in there and ended up anchoring for another few days. Unfortunately, it being November, it was a very quiet Bay, with all the restaurants and bars closed up for the season.
At the beginning of December, we were able to make our way north up the west coast of Greece, sailing to Methoni and stopping for some groceries before continuing on to Marathos.
In Marathos, we found a little fishing harbour where we were able to sneak in and drop anchor for a few days and wait for the next weather window to take us to Sicily.
Eventually that weather window came, so we pushed west saying goodbye to Greece for good and began a 3 day trip from hell. We had strong wind and serious waves. The boat was being rocked around so violently, I was obviously sick. It was a very tough stretch and at some points we had hardly any sail up at all. But, we made it to Syracuse, Sicily on Dec 8 and we were so happy to take a break. Luckily for us, Syracuse allows free tie up to the wall for 5 days. So after anchoring for two nights, we took full advantage of that. We tied up and enjoyed pizzas and walking through the old historic district which is full of shops and absolutely beautiful architecture. One church we saw, was just amazing. The detail and stone carvings were just mind blowing. We happened to be there during the parade for Santa Lucia, their patron saint. So we got to see a huge display of confetti and fireworks with a big band parading through the streets. After our 5 days we're up, we checked out and pushed north along the east coast of Sicily. We did a lot of short day hops, anchoring at night and taking our time. After the rough crossing from Greece, we were in no hurry to push ourselves. We found a couple great fishing harbours where we were able to tie up and enjoy an easy night without having to anchor. We sailed past Mt Etna, wondering if she would blow some time soon, since it was reported to have a lot of activity and could blow soon. The Strait of Messina was really easy to get through, we timed it properly with the current and it took no time at all to turn around to the north coast of Sicily. We sailed the coast only stopping for a couple nights to anchor at a nice sandy beach. We spent the day walking to the nearest town which turned out to be a designer shopping town, with fancy shops lining the sidewalks.
We continued on to Palermo, where we were able to anchor in a fishing harbour instead of paying marina fees and spent a solid week or so there waiting for the weather, as usual. There was a great cafe just 5 minutes away, that had wifi and cheap beer. They also had great little pastries and the guys there were super nice. We did some walking around Palermo and couldn't believe the amount of garbage littering the streets. The spots where there were garbage bins were actually overflowing mountains of trash and made Palermo a lot less attractive then it should have been. Apparently, a lot of Sicily have problems with garbage, but man it was bad.
While we were in Palermo, I received a message from my sister asking if we were okay, due to the earthquake from the blowing of Mt. Etna. We didn't feel a thing but I couldn't believe our luck. Just a week or so after passing it, it blows. Thankfully we were all the way on the NW corner of Sicily and felt none of the effects. It would have been cool to see, but not up close on the boat with the potential of ash and hot rocks falling on us. The sails would not be happy.
Anyway, we got a short weather window and decided to head north to Oustica island. Although the other Aeolian islands were tempting we had to pass all of them and only got to visit Oustica. We stayed there for 2 nights and then we made another long push to get to Sardinia. We sailed over the New Year and again I was very sick, because again it was another rough journey. Large choppy swells and strong wind rolled us around but we got there. We went to the southern part of Sardinia to the bay of Cagliari. We anchored offshore in the bay around 3 or 4 in the morning to get some desperately needed sleep. A few hours later we sailed right into Cagliari and anchored in an empty fishing harbour. Unfortunately, that night at like 11PM, once we were asleep of course, the Guardia de Finanza came and told us we couldn't anchor there. We told them we would leave, slept the rest of the night and then left in the morning. We headed back around a small point to a place called Poetto. Which was to be our home for the next 3 months. We anchored off the beach and dealt with 50 knot NW gales a few times, with 3 anchors down. Those days were quite stressful, never knowing if we would start to drag or some other problem would arise. But, the anchors held fabulously and we weathered out the gales no problem.
Poetto is a fantastic place to see dinghy sailing. Almost everyday there were lasers, optimists, and windsurfers out. We also got to see the Nacra 15 and 17s go out to train, and watch them capsize in the heavy winds. It was quite a spectacle to see such a large fleet of little sails across the bay.
We were regulars at a couple of the cafes, ordering cappuccinos so we could use their wifi. We watched a lot of Netflix movies and were quite lazy. The water was too cold to swim in so we spent our days walking around town or heading into Cagliari by bus. The Guardia came by once more while we were there, checked our papers and then left us alone.
Mike bought a used bicycle while we were there which made trips to the grocery store or into Cagliari much shorter.
Before leaving, we knew we would have to give the hull a scrub because she was getting fuzzy with green grass. So one day Mike, suited up in the wetsuit and hoodie and scrubbed his side and the next day I did mine. Man the water was still cold and it made you work that much faster. It wasn't too bad until you got back in the boat trying to strip down in the wind. But we heated up some water, rinsed off and got back into warm clothes. I don't mind doing the job in the Caribbean but it was a serious mission in the cod waters of the Med in march.
We finally got a break in the NW Winds, so Mike cycled to the customs office in Cagliari and officially checked us out, even though we hadn't checked in. We still had our papers from Sicily so they just back dated our check in, took our Sicily papers and checked us out. We left the next morning (Mar 20) and headed west to the SW point of Sardinia.
We anchored at Porto Piscina, which is where we anchored last summer when we were on our way to Greece. We spent the weekend there and then we had another long jump to the Balearics. We had great East wind and made it to Mallorca, just before a strong blow came. We anchored in Porto Colom which is on the west side of Mallorca for one night before continuing on to Formentera. Again, we anchored here on our way to Greece, so it was nice and familiar, even the swells from the ferries seemed familiar. Which there are almost constantly, due to the number of ferries from Formentera to Ibiza everyday, all day.
We stocked up on some groceries and had a great meal of lamb and chicken cous cous at a nice little restaurant. It's always nice to get a little pampered and not have to cook after a journey. I finally tried using the motion sickness patch that you stick behind your ear, and low and behold I wasn't seasick. Every journey consisting of more then a day or two, I always end up being sea sick for about 12-24 hours before recovering and settling in. It's definitely raises my anxiety planning a trip when I know I'm going to have to deal with that, and knowing that Mike will have to push himself to let me sleep and recover. Thank goodness I have figured out something that would work. Now, I just need to find more, because the last few pharmacies we have gone to only sell pills, and those do nothing for me.
After a couple nights in Formentera we made the next jump to the Spanish coast. We made it to Santa Pola before dropping the pick and getting some sleep. On April 1, we motored into the marina and tied up to the fuel dock while I ran ashore to get some wifi, groceries and beer. By 10 AM we were moving again. We made it 30 nm down the coast to a place called Tomas Maestre, where we anchored for one night in what we call the tin box. It's an old fishing harbour with steel plates sticking out as walls. The Guardia Civil came within a few hours and boarded the boat to check out our papers. He was a really nice guy and told us they are mostly looking for drugs and human smuggling. Which we have neither, so after a smile and goodbye they left us to sleep in peace. Thankfully, they showed up around 7 PM instead of in the middle of the night.
From there we ended up motoring down to Cabo Palos, which was the first big point we needed to round. We pushed around it and anchored in a little bay, but the wind kept building so we decided to go back around the point and anchor there. We had a nice night with the SW wind blocked by the land and no swell. We spent a night there and after checking the weather decided to set sail Wed April 3, around 11 PM, which was when the SW swung to the NE, but before it built too much. We rounded the corner again and made our way to Cartagena. We anchored in a harbour beside a small marina and luckily no one told us to move. It was a bit of a hike to town, which we did a couple times. The first day we went walking to town there was a marathon race happening where the competitors were running 50 kms through the navy shipyard, up the hills and through the city. I give them full props for even trying such an arduous task. The second day we were there, I woke up and my eye felt kind of weird. I went on deck and the brightness of a cloudy sky was too much. I went straight to the head to look in the mirror and sure enough my left pupil was blown. And I mean blown. Like on drugs big. You could barely see any blue. I woke Mike up and was a little bit panicked for obvious reasons. After thinking things through, I checked out the patch I wore for sea sickness. It turns out, that the motion sickness patch, if it makes contact with your eye will do this. I must have had some on my hand and rubbed my eye. Even though it had been over a day since I'd taken it off. My eye returns to normal after about 48 hours. But man was it freaky looking. We stayed in our little anchorage for a week and then started doing little hops down the coast toward our next big obstacle which was Cabo de Gata. The last big point.
From Cartagena we made it to a great little bay called Cabo Cope where as we sailed up there was another sailboat and I could see they were flying a Canadian flag. We didn't get a chance to talk to them because we anchored and went to bed and the both of us were off first thing in the morning heading opposite directions but they were a boat from Montreal called Caffe Latte. It was pretty cool to see another Canadian boat out at anchor.
We continued on, stopping in Aguilas for a couple nights, rounding Cabo de Gata, anchoring in Garrucha and then to Fuengirola.
We decided to treat ourselves to a night in a marina with hot showers and because the swell rolling into the anchorage were over 2 m. The surfers were loving it but we weren't. Luckily for us, it proved to be a super cheap marina with excellent facilities and super friendly staff. We had a great cheeseburger and fries at a placed called Rockhouse which was a small restaurant bar, at the end of a long line of restaurants, but well worth the trip. The burger was absolutely amazing and the beers were pretty good too. They had an old Nintendo system set up and I played a couple levels of Super Mario Bros to remind me of the old days. I still remember where all the green extra life mushrooms are hidden. Once we had full bellies we headed for the showers. Oh my god, a hot shower is heaven when you live on a boat with no hot water and no shower. Of course we have been having "tote baths" by heating up water and using a soap and cloth in a Rubbermaid tote. But these were our first real showers since we left the house in Greece. Which is now 5 months. We relished in the hot water until we were too tired and headed back to the boat for a great sleep in perfectly still water. The next day we filled up our water tanks, since the water is included in the price. It's really good tasting water too which is a huge plus. We rinsed off the decks because the south wind had brought a bit of Saharan dust to land on us. We went and anchored outside the marina for one more night before pushing on to Estopona, where we anchored off. Then from there we pushed the rest of the way to Gibraltar. Which brings us to today. We walked over to Gibraltar and checked out the shops down Main Street. I also got fish and chips which I've been craving for a while and we have had no luck catching any fish while sailing. Unfortunately, it's Easter, so a lot of shops and things are closed but it was still a great walk and I can officially say I've been to Gibraltar. I even got a stamp in my passport.
Now for the craziest news, we are anchored just north of the La Linea marina where we are planning to leave the boat for a few weeks while we do a delivery job of a brand new sailboat from France to Athens.
After all the time and trouble we've gone to, to get out of the Med, we are headed right back in. But at least our boat will be here on the edge. We will bus and train to France from here. Sail to Athens and then fly back to the boat before actually leaving the Med, and heading to the the Algarve in Portugal. We are planning a trip to South Africa, so we will find a good place to leave the boat in the Algarve for a month or two while we go on a wild ride with Mike's's friend Bruce to Botswana. I'm really excited to do this trip, one since I've never been to Africa, but also to explore a place in a truck, seeing all the animals I've only ever seen on TV or in the zoo. Once that's done, and we're back aboard Athena, we will head south to the Canaries, then to Cape Verde and finally back to the Caribbean. It's been a long time coming but we've got no schedule and eventually we will get to those tropical blue waters again. But hey, it's the journey, not the destination and I'm excited for the new opportunities we are about to embark on.
Anyway, I promise to write a little more often now that we're all caught up. Keep following us on Coconut Seaways FB and coconut_seaways on Instagram to see the pics of our travels. If you wanna meet us at a destination, send us a message and we can try to hook up and give you the full Coconut Seaways experience. Sailing, snorkelling and living life. Lots of love to all the followers and friends and family who encourage us to keep doing what we're doing.
