Salcedo x Binondo : My Kind of Yin-yang Sabado
Habang naglalaba at nagaalaga ng total of 4 babies ang Ravenclaw mom n'yo, kahit lumpuhan weekend, lalaban pa rin tayo kahit kanino. CHARAUGHT.
Slept soooo late kanina and had to drag myself outta bed because we had a series of revisits in the name of first too many firsts. Hahahahahahahahahahhaaha. Kalandian na naman po tayo but Shirakawago-kanal vibe. Can I just say, pagod na pagod na talaga ako pero gusto ko munang isampay 'yung mga damit ko para one less item off my weekend tambak errands list kasi bukas, dami pang gagawin, as in. Ginusto ko naman 'to, so KFINE.
Andami kong surprises today. Actually, sobrang simple ko lang talaga kahit parang ang arte, curated kuno and intimidating ako. SoKor x Japan x Baguio x Amazon from UK loot. WOOT. WOOT. As in. HUHUHUHUHUHU. Ang mo 'yung feeling na sobrang spoiled kong donut seeking for peace of mind szn ako? Ganun. Siguro kasi, sobrang dami lang din need to detox as we intentionally fill our glass. Need ko talagang mag-recharge as Haruki Murakami na: what I talk about when I talk about running. Pa-brainy 'yarn? Basta, ilang nare-read 'yung book. Hindi pa nabalik sa akin 'yung original book cover na version. So, ayun na nga. In fairness naman, ganda nung bagong cover kaso ang mahal po. As in. Ang mura lang nung previous edition. Going back to the loot. I got a bunso, my 4th baby as Ravenclaw pet mom. This time around, it's a Tamagochi na Harry Potter. HUHUHUHUHU. Pa-Xmas gift na raw kahit alam na scrooge ako. Sweet noh? Grabe talaga. As in kilig-kilig 100000 ako. Apaka babaw pero ganun talaga ako. Next is of course, a Royce chocolates. Hahahaha. Syempre, papaunbox ko sa frenny ko kasi namiss n'ya ako e and share sa office on Monday. TBH, I don't like chocolates except kasabay ng wine and cheese and cold cuts, so share na lang natin. Tapos tatay ko, wolfing them down e pinapapabawasan ko nga timbang kasi medyo mahina na pumadyak pero solid pa ring mambola. Hahahahahaha. Next is my Amazon pasabuy which is my crush Steven Bartlett's book, Diary of a CEO. Was hoping to get a signed copy sa pre-order kaso 'yung friend ko from London, hirap kausap. Hindi naman na ako choosy. Sana matapos ko 'to and ma-Venn Diagram ko kay Haruki Murakami. UGH. Ubos brain cells and ego na naman dito. Pero, gesi lungs for the greater good. CHZ. Forda bonus and the increase na pang-Wisteria szn x Oz hopefully next year. HUHUHUHUHUHUHUHUHU.
And of course, the Good Shepherd ube jam from Baguio, my healing place na special delivery in Binondo today. Naubusan ako ng french beans na mura sooooo, next time na lang. Sanay naman akong mag-antay kahit madali akong ma-bore and mainip.
Was able to leave office work kinda early kahit may habols pa rin and arrived in Palanca around 8 pm for a reservation. Saks lang tbh. Pero okay naman 'yung attempt to fill the gap in the market ng modern Jap food, however, 'wag talaga magtitiwala sa TikTok at reels. LOL.
UGH. So ayun na nga. Jap restos in Pinas sobrang hirap niya pero dapat kasi nothing fancy. LOL.
So ayun na ngaaa. Noong hayok pa ako sa work na akala mo pagmamay-ari ko ang kompanya kahit utusan lang naman ako, ganito siya. Drive at 6 am. Work until 12 midnight. 'Pag gusto mag-decompress ng kapurit na utak, sampa ng pa-Baguio sa Victory Pasay. Then, Baguio kagulo ng weekend. Balik Manila by 5 am then pasok sa work ulit ng 8 or 9 am. Ginawa po nating Tags ang Baguio for some time kasi nga, bobong nilalang pa tayo nung past life natin.
Or 'pag may work ng weekend, work until the morning and reward myself with Salcedo or Legazpi weekend market po tayo opo. May Cubao X or Antipolo drives, Pinto, Overlooking, Rizal, o kung anong pangtanggal shithole pa 'yan over the weekend ages ago. Tacca. Tapos balik sabak ulit sa Lunes. Pati long weekends, Christmas and New Year's Eve, work po tayo opo. Then inom ng malala. Then yosi. Then kain. Then kagulo. Then repeat... again and again and again. Kaya 'pag may work-related stuff akong natatanggap ng weekend, pet peeve ko 'yan. I cut it off. I don't wanna go there. Napagdaanan ko na kasi. Sorry... not sorry. Not anymore. Never again. Nakakaburn out. Nakaksuya. Kaya ko naman mag-work ng weekend, kung tutuusin lalo 'pag wala akong gala outside Manila lalo na ngayon, may AI na. HUHUHUHUHU. Full support ito sa org namin. IM LIKE OWEEEMMMM. Yassss, kween!
Pero, hindi siya sustainable. Parang gusto mo lang may patunayan. Bored ka lang. Or wala kang sense of work life balance. Or sadyang wala kang moral compass. Ako pinaguusapan dito a. I don't judge naman kasi basta 'di ako nadadamay. Kung baga, kanya-kanyang timelines 'yan.
Mahirap siya to be honest lalo 'pag tapos ko errands ko ng Saturday night. HAHAHAHAHA. Kaya lang, ayoko ng balikan ka-adikan ko kasi ang lala ng singil niya. Ang taas ng interest. Ang laki ng karma sa katawan at katauhan. DAMNNNGURLLLL. This morning, I revisited Salcedo, my first after pandemic and the dreaded lockdown. So much time passed, and seeing the OGs and the new breed is a mixed vibe. Salcedo started I think 2004. Not sure if legit top search ko kanina sa market mismo. Happy to back and happy to look back. :) And seeing the OG na expat (Madge) na ex-graphic designer turned baker and seller na machika in English with a twang, alam mo 'yung, malayo na pero, malayo pa. Also, 'yung solid na solid na paella negra na napaka mahal na, mhie. JUSQ. Pikitmata kasi nostaglic feeling ko in every bite. Lahat ng kamalian ko at kung ano mang progress ko kahit onti-onti pa ngayon, nagsama. Saka 'yung taho. Dalisay. Parang organic soy kinemerut siya. Saka basta. Iba talaga as a taho girly ang go-to, theoretically. May bounce yung sago. Hindi masyadong durog. Hindi masyadong buo 'yung pagkahalo nung taho sa baso. Sakto 'yung timpla based sa preference mo. Parang indie film shot so early in the morning. Kaka-Food Wars binge watch ko talaga 'to e o because of the four kinds of smokin' shrooms overload ito? :D
Sarap din kasi mag-people watch and social experiment na walang stimuli dito. As in. Mix of the 1%, the middle class and the masa. Para siyang Parasite, Pinas edition. LOL. Kaya, I keep coming back and saya lang kasi 'yung isa naming kasama as a probinsiyana, ngayon lang siya nakapunta and definitely, babalik siya with her hubby na super mukhang walang gagawing mabuti sa earth pero gentle giant na nagtanong kung saan ako nagpa-tat. Tapos nagpatat agad-agad ng Jap dream tat niya on the spot. Hahahahahahahaha.
Next, syempre, since busy talaga weekdays ko saka hindi ako nakakareply agad-agad sa personal PMs, hinataw natin today. Derecho Binondo after check out. Sana kasi may condo na lang ako sa area na 'to ng Makati kaso syempre, wala tayong pambili. LOL. One Salcedo Place ba 'yun or something similar or mas maganda apartment sa side ng Bosco pero 'yung hindi binabaha, please. CHZ. Ngayon din. CHAR. O, easy. Hindi ka nepo baby, mhie. :P
Ying-Ying po tayo for Binondo though bias ko Wai Ying. Ako lang 'yun. Pero in all honesty, mas maganda service and vibes ng Ying-ying. Mabait naman din sa Wai Ying kaso kakagaling ko lang doon a few months back with my travel buddies ata. 'Di ko na matandaan tapos 'pag umaabon, wala masilungan. E balmy day pa naman today in Manila.
Another first of many (LUHHHNDI MO. LUL.), I hope. :p Hahahahaha. And had the usual order pero tried out the Singaporean bihon something kasi nagkamali ng basa fog brain ko. Ganda pa ng table kasi framing is spot on tapos sakto hapon, wala ng rush masyado ang dayo crowd ng Binondo. HAHAHAHA. Next stop: photowalk in film early morning sa Binondo. United + craft beer + Daan Raon/Quaipo/Lawton. Bike in Intramuros pero ang lala ng pila ng Bambike. UGH. Kain ng ice cream sa Batalan ba 'yun. Oweeem. Basta dun. Then sunset in Intra + wine sa taas ng Bayleaf. :D Honestly, 'pag XX kasi, sobrang lala. Pati PMS nagkakaproblema agad. Tapos, ang daming drama. Tapos may side notes pa na: alam ko busy ka sa work kaya 'di ka nakareply... with pa-effect eyes. Aynako. Tusukin ko mata mo. Arte. Kainis. Puwede namang bullet points lang. Pero cutie chixxxxx kasi ihhh. I'm marupoklore talaga 'pag pa-sweet girl na flatypus. AHAHHAHAHHA. As in. Maroon heart pa. LOLOLLOLLOLL. Digital nomad pa ihhh.
Pero gusto ko na lang passenger princess Fiona, tbh. I fucking hate Manila drives kaya wala na talaga akong tiyagang mag-drive. Kakapagod tapos for sure 'di naman na puwede ang road rage and lit gas pedal. HAHAHAHHAA. At syempre, super sungit ako kahit anong gusto, because Imma girl like that. Kuha na lang akong tambay na willing maging yaya-caregiver-driver noh? Ang mahal ng billable hours niyan for sure. Hahahaha. Then, pet babies kasi naiwan ko sila home alone since last night.
<3 Thank u, universe. You are sooo interesting this Q4. Keep it coming para hindi ako ma-bore.

25 Tips for Permaculture Living
Permaculture is a design system and approach that challenges us to engage in whole systems thinking to create a better world and a worthwhile, kick-ass life. These are just ideas, shape your permaculture plans to fit your life & community.
The 3 Ethics of Permaculture: Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share.
1. Grow food. Even just a little. A sprawling garden, a raised bed, and a little pot of basil in a windowsill are all accomplishments. Growing that food creates a relationship with the soil, the weather, and the ecosystem. It slows us down, increases our resilience, and helps us eat where we are.
2. Chop & gather wood. If you are able where you live, take responsibility for your fuel needs. I live in a rural area so this is feasible for me, but these skills can also be utilized on camping trips/when using fire pits/etc. Learn to gather wood regeneratively and how to cure, stack, and chop it. Use as little as possible in a well-kept woodstove and return the charcoal to the Earth as biochar.
3. Minimize. Pare down your closet, your kitchen appliances, your shopping trips, the number of devices you own, anything you recognize you have/do in surplus. Being happy with less is powerful, it increases gratitude and lessens want.
4. Catch and store water. If it's legal where you live to do so, catch rainwater. This can be done in many ways, for many reasons. To pump the water as the pressurized water in your home or to water your gardens and landscape. Recycled plastic rain barrels are a simple and inexpensive way to collect and store free rainwater.
5. Eat together. Slow down and eat with the ones you love, just eating, talking, and being. Give each other and the nourishment on your plate your undivided attention.
6. Buy secondhand. Commit to buying as much as you can secondhand. This slows down impulse purchasing and hugely lessens the impact of your purchase. You'll also likely end up with a higher quality item and a great deal! Since secondhand items already exist, no production is needed, no new footprint is created, better for everyone. There are online secondhand shops too if you're looking for something specific you can't find locally.
7. Stop shopping at big supermarkets. Avoid them as much as possible! They're full of plastic packaging, processed foods, and the illusion of choice. Almost every product on supermarket shelves is owned by one of 10 companies, and they certainly aren't environmentally friendly ones. For food, make basics from scratch and source whole foods from locally owned farms, markets, co-ops, and shops. Online resources like Vitacost and the Package Free Shop are great for healthier options you might not find locally.
8. Reuse all nutrients. Compost all you can. Kitchen scraps, garden scraps, yard clippings, tree prunings, charcoal & ash from the fire, and urine and manure can all be returned to the Earth and transformed.
9. Pack your lunch. We all love takeout, but packing your own meal to take with you saves money, eliminates waste, and can be eaten anywhere! Eat your lunch in the park, the woods, up a tree, get to know your local nature spaces while you eat.
10. Make your own bread. Bread is one of our most beloved basic foods. Baking it yourself will nourish you better, save money, eliminate packaging, learn a new skill, and use whole ingredients instead of mystery ingredients and preservatives in many store-bought breads.
11. Swap your gym workout for gardening. Keeping healthy and fit is so important and if you're able, working in the garden is amazing exercise. Turn a compost pile, dig a garden bed, pull weeds, prune trees, pot seedlings, chop wood, or go walking in nature and enjoy the wild garden she provides. All deeply useful tasks, a great workout, and fresh air too! Forest bathing, being and basking in nature, is extremely healthy for our bodies and minds.
12. Minimize meat. Purchase meats from local farmers & butchers and don't support factory farming whenever possible. Appreciate and respect the animal nourishing you, use every bit of the meat you purchase.
13. Take the train. If you have to take a long trip, consider the train over flying. One trip on a plane generates about 300kg of CO2, taking the rain generates 10x less. It's slower, sure, but you can relax, read, nap, enjoy the scenery, and reduce emissions.
14. Support community. In every way: shop local, eat local, support your local food bank when you have surplus, volunteer in the community, help out at the community garden, teach your neighbors a skill. Show up for your community's pollinators by caring for local lands, planting native species, and encouraging others to do so. If you're already a gardener, start a crop swap if there isn't one. Give where you can, help where you can, engage where you live.
15. Keep bees. Bees are beautiful to watch, they provide our gardens and local landscape with pollination, and provide you with honey and wax. The millions of flowers and incredible effort involved in each jar of honey garners a great appreciation for sweetness and the work of bees.
16. Sleep well. It really does make a huge difference in our moods, health, and energy we're capable of putting into the day.
17. Live small. Living in a small house means less heating, cleaning, furniture, energy costs, and housing costs. A small home also makes for an intimate space to spend time together.
18. Work for yourself when you can. Growing food and being involved in the non-monetary economy of growing, swapping, sharing, foraging, reusing is so good for our health and everyday happiness.
19. Forage wild food. If you live somewhere with natural spaces that aren't sprayed with chemicals, there's probably free food all around you. Foraging is a great way to fill your belly with seasonal freshness, for FREE! Each season offers it's own special goodies, so you also learn to live with the seasons and connect to your local nature in a new way. Be sure to positively identify all species before you consume anything!
20. Take care of your ecosystem. You are a steward of the land and every little bit helps. Pick up trash and plastic when you're out. If you own property, manage your land. Volunteer for clean ups, water testing, gardening projects. Manage invasive species if you find them and are able. Plant native species and species for pollinators. Anything, truly anything helps.
21. Build forts & tree houses. If you have space, a collaborative building project using recycled/gathered materials teaches us lots of skills and helps us appreciate everything it takes just to keep a basic roof over our heads. Plus you'll also have a nice hideaway in nature to enjoy.
22. Grow beans. Love you, beans! They improve the soil, can be grown as climbers even if you have limited space, and can be eaten fresh, frozen, or dried (which store for years, increasing resilience). Beans are self pollinating which makes saving seeds easy and they're one of the most climate-adaptable plant proteins you can grow.
23. Pass it on. Share abundance! Produce, clothing, knowledge, skills, eggs, yarn, anything. Pass it on, pay it forward, share your excess, it's a gift to both your community and yourself.
24. Share skills. A skilled community is able to look after themselves and each other. Are you a great cook? Host a cooking party and teach your friends to make their own yogurt. Love starting seeds? Hold a seed starting workshop outside your local library. It doesn't have to be complex or fancy, just have heart. Which you already have, so you're perfect. Skill shares build confidence, knowledge, and community.
25. Rise up. Silence = violence. Permaculture is about doing as little harm as possible and using our time on Earth to do the best we can, with our hands and our voices. Speak up, show up, rise up. Work for the world you want, not just the garden you want.

A cottage witch and her dragon 5
(Read from the beginning on AO3 here)
Serenity felt terrible. Absolutely terrible. Two days ago, she had been unusually tired. Yesterday, she had the sniffles and a headache, but drank some of her tea meant for colds and carried on with her day. Today, however, she woke up feeling absolutely awful. Her entire body hurt. She was congested and kept coughing, the deep, mucousy kind of cough that left you short of breath and light headed.
Dragon was very worried. He radiated concern as soon as she woke up, later than usual and sweating in her sheets.
“I’m fine,” she told him, lying. “I just need some tea and I’ll be right as rain.”
Dragon snorted and shared his feelings of disbelief. There was a tinge of “Of course you’re not okay!” coloring his emotions. He was the size of an adolescent kitten now. And in some ways he had matured and in some he was still just a baby.
“Really, I’m okay!” The fit of coughing following this statement betrayed her.
“Fine, I have a cold. I’ll feel better once I get up and moving.”
Dragon climbed up to her shoulder as she sat up. He had wings, but he hadn’t used them yet. Instead, he used his claws to climb up her, or used his surprisingly powerful back legs to jump remarkable heights.
“I have to go to the market this afternoon,” she reminded him. “If I don’t sell anything today I might not make rent. I can’t be sick.”
Serenity made her way to the kitchen area of her main room and turned on her magic kettle, a splurge she had bought several years ago because you could set the temperature it heats to between a range of temperatures. It really did make a difference if you were making certain teas. Most herbal teas could take boiling water, but proper tea, black, green, and white tea, all had optimal temperatures to be brewed at or they were incredibly bitter.
Serenity’s opinion was that you might as well drink coffee if you were going to boil your black tea. For the most part, she was of the sensible opinion that it doesn’t have to be expensive and fancy if it works, but the two places where she did her best to invest in quality goods was tea and yarn. Rough wool had its place, but nothing could compare to a good merino. Alpaca and the like was out of her budget except for special items, but she figured nothing beat a proper wool anyway.
Dragon squeaked at her, worry clear in his little voice.
“It’s” she coughed again. “It’s fine.”
Did the fire go out overnight? No, there was still a bed of glowing coals in the fireplace. Why was it so cold?
A knock came at the door.
Serenity made her way slowly to the door, trying not to pant or cough more. She opened it to reveal Granny Thomas on her doorstep.
“Serenity, dear, I just made some bread and I know you have market today so I just thought I’d drop off a sandwich for you to take - Goodness! You look terrible!”
Serenity smiled at Granny’s scandalized face. She must really look ill if this was Granny’s response.
“I’m fine, just have a cold.”
“Heavens! You look like you’re about to faint right in front of me. Shoo, get inside and eat this sandwich, and I’ll make the tea.”
Serenity was long used to Granny inviting herself in. Not that she had ever minded. It had been rather surprising when she first moved in and Granny brought herself inside right along with her “welcome to the neighborhood” blackberry pie, though.
Granny bustled about in the kitchen half of the room while Serenity sat, exhausted, in her rocking chair.
“Which one of these teas is for colds, dear?” Granny asked as she moved jars about on Serenity’s extensive herb shelves. She did sell home mixed magical teas, after all.
“The one in the pickle jar,” Serenity told her.
“Ah yes, it has a label, I see it now. Oh it has mullein in it, oh good. One moment dear and we’ll get you sorted out.”
Serenity laid back in her chair and closed her eyes. She really did feel absolutely terrible. A moment ago she had been too cold, now the faint glow from the coals in her fireplace felt like a dragonfire blowing directly on her skin.
Granny quickly brought her the tea and then stopped her scurrying to look Serenity over.
“Serenity, dear, how long have you been sick? Here, let me feel your forehead. You look like you have a fever.”
Granny’s hand was cold against her hot skin. It stirred a memory in Serenity’s mind. Her mother had done this when she was ill as a small child, before her mother died when she was ten. The tenderness of a cold hand pressed against her forehead almost brought her to tears. Since when was she so touch starved?
“You definitely have a fever. Do you have one of those temperature doohickeys? A.. what’s it called. A thermometer!”
“No,” Serenity said, “Never needed one.”
“Well this sandwich won’t do. You need soup!”
“You don’t have to make me soup, Granny. I still have to go to the market today. I’ll take the sandwich.”
Granny gasped. “No. Absolutely not. You are not going anywhere. For one, you’ll pass out trying to walk there, and two, you’ll get the entire market sick.”
“I have to go or I won’t make rent this month. Besides, what about you? Won’t I get you sick?”
“Never you mind about that. Now, chicken soup is best but I don’t have chicken right now. I’ll have to ask Mrs Roberts if she has any to share. She’s a kind lady, she’ll share if she has any. Besides, my son fixed the leak in her bathroom. Neighbors help each other and all that.”
“Granny,” Serenity objected.
“Nope! Not listening! Now, go get back in bed. I’ll be back with soup ingredients. Take your tea with you.” She turned stern. “Mark my words, if you aren’t back in that bed when I come back, I’ll hex your favorite handmade socks to always feel wet no matter what you do.”
“Dastardly,” Serenity laughed, getting up to follow her orders.
Serenity crawled back in bed, coughing as she laid down. “Ugh. I feel so terrible.”
Dragon stood in her doorway, holding his favorite rabbit.
“Dragon, what’s that for?”
He held it out, as if offering it to her.
“For me?”
Dragon nodded.
“You are giving me your rabbit? Because I don’t feel good?”
Dragon toddled over on his back legs, holding the rabbit carefully in his front paws. When he got to the bed, he leapt up, landing next to her with a soft thump. He held his rabbit out and rubbed it on her face.
“Thank you, buddy.” She took the little rabbit in her hands and tucked it into the blankets with her, as if tucking in a baby.
Satisfied, Dragon crawled up next to her head, gave her a soft headbutt, and settled down, eyeing her warily, as if she was a child who might misbehave.
Serenity didn’t even remember falling asleep, but she woke to the sound of her door opening and voices in her kitchen.
“Serenity? Are you awake? No, don’t get out of bed,” Granny called. “Mrs Roberts is here with me. She had some chicken and potatoes for soup!” Granny appeared in the doorway. “She’s going to go to market for you today. Where do you keep your items for sale?”
Serenity had, at this point, given up on doing anything today. She felt faint and fuzzy headed, and Granny was definitely right about the fever. Besides, just once, just for today, for the first time in a very long time, she was being taken care of. And that was something precious to her that she just couldn’t give up.
Mrs Roberts poked her head into Serenity’s bedroom. “Goodness, you really are sick,” she exclaimed. “Well, you tell me where your goods for market are and I’ll take care of everything. I’ll make sure they sell out!”
Serenity coughed and then smiled. “They’re in the bins on the shelves next to the fireplace. Second bin on the right, middle shelf. It’s mostly fireproof potholders and the rags I sell.”
“The ones that absorb more no matter how wet they are?”
“Those are the ones.”
Mrs Roberts disappeared from the doorway and there was another, very enthusiastic knock on the door.
“What are you doing here?” Serenity heard Granny exclaim from the other room.
“I’ve come to play with Dragon!” A child’s voice. It must be Lucy, the little girl who lived two houses down. She always ran around the neighborhood, bouncing between neighbor’s houses looking for entertainment. And the neighbors, mostly retired folks, enjoyed the boisterous life she brought to otherwise quiet days.
“You can’t play with Dragon right now. Serenity is sick.”
“Awwww. Serenity is sick? Is she gonna be okay?”
“She’ll be fine. She has the flu. We’re making her soup right now. You better go home so you don’t get sick.”
Lucy cheerfully agreed and ran off, probably to find another neighbor’s home to invade. Mrs Roberts departed, promising once again that she would sell all Serenity had to sell.
“I never sell out,” Serenity had said.
But Mrs Roberts got a twinkle in her eye and said “Just wait.” And off she went.
There was another knock at the door. This time it was Liz, Lucy’s mother. The two of them had lost her husband in a work accident when Lucy was five. They lived off of his widow’s benefits and the odd charity from neighbors and family.
Serenity felt herself slipping into a doze. Liz hadn’t come to see her, apparently, because she stayed in the kitchen, talking to Granny Thomas in hushed tones. Serenity fell asleep before she left.
Serenity spent the day sleeping, waking up only to eat and drink more tea, at Granny’s insistence. She really had no appetite but being fussed over was a rare luxury she only allowed herself because she was sick.
When Serenity finally woke, the light outside her window was beginning to fade. It wasn’t dusk yet, but it would be soon. She got up, taking her blanket with her, and stepped into the other room.
Granny was there, darning her socks again. Sock darning was a never ending process, after all.
As Serenity opened her mouth to say good evening, there was yet another knock at the door.
“You sold out!” Mrs Roberts said excitedly, and just a little smug.
“How did you manage that!” Serenity asked, incredulous.
“My kids may be grown with kids of their own, but once a mom, always a mom. You just have to find the right customer, one who you can tell respects their mom, and then you give them The Mom Voice and they have to buy it.”
“Incredible,” Serenity said, wondering in the back of her mind if her mom had done The Mom Voice. Her aunt, who adopted her before also passing away during the late years of Serenity’s apprenticeship, certainly did.
“Yes, well, I won’t keep you. Here’s the cash.” She pulled out a pretty embroidered purse, Serenity’s own work, and handed her a bundle of bills and some change.
“Thank you, Mrs Roberts,” Serenity said wholeheartedly. “I don’t think I could have made rent without your help.”
“Of course,” said Mrs Roberts. “Your joint tea has helped my husband go for nature walks and hold his tools again. And you don’t charge enough for it,” she added sternly. Her face softened. “Well, neighbors take care of each other. Friends. Friends take care of each other.”
The tears threatening to spring to Serenity’s eyes were definitely a result of being sick and overly sensitive. Definitely.
“Thank you,” she said quietly. “Thank you.”
Mrs Roberts smiled kindly at her, understanding the emotions in her quiet voice. She was a mom, after all.
“I’m going to go lay back down,” Serenity announced, still emotional.
“Good, I’ll bring you some more tea in a few minutes, I just need to talk with Mrs Roberts for a moment,” Granny said.
Serenity nodded and went back to lay down. Once again there were hushed voices. Then the sound of the door opening and closing, and Granny brought in some more of her tea.
“Here you go dear,” Granny said.
“Granny,” Serenity said. “Thank you.”
“Well of course! The entire neighborhood took care of me when I sprained my wrist last winter, don’t you remember?”
“No, it’s not that….” Serenity hesitated. “It’s… I haven’t been taken care of in a very long time. My parents… Well, you know they died when I was young. And I started my apprenticeship at twelve, and my teacher wasn’t the nurturing sort. So it’s just…. Something I didn’t know I missed, that’s all.”
Granny smiled softly and put a hand on Serenity’s shoulder. “We might not be related, and of course I’ll never replace your family, but you’re one of my people. I’m always happy to take care of you.”
Serenity took a shaky breath and smiled, nodding.
“Now, I’ll stay here for another hour and finish darning those socks. The state of your socks my dear, not pretty.”
Serenity smiled. “Thanks, Granny.”
Serenity drifted off to sleep that night, still feeling terrible but reassured on a deep, subconscious level that she was not alone. She lived in a kind neighborhood, where people with too little worked together to make everything just enough. And if all of her neighbors ended the day several fireproof oven mitts richer…. Well… Serenity would never know.

Comforting Things for Bad Days
I made this list for myself, but I figured I'd share it in case anyone else may need it. It's just a simple guide of things that help when I'm upset, so if it helps you as well, I'm glad. Godspeed, everyone
Tumblr media
🍜 Cooking food!! I was having a really shitty day awhile back, just feeling incredibly exhausted, and even after a nap it didn't seem to be getting much better. But then I made myself some Ramen and I just felt so much nicer than before. Even just boiling some water to get it started felt so fulfilling. Food is such a soulful thing, it never fails to make me feel better, especially if it's handmade. So go pick up some cucumber and slice it into bits, then throw together a salad while you’re at it! It’ll nourish your stomach and your soul. This also applies to baking too, of course! Some banana bread or brownies sure do sound good right now!
☕ Make yourself some tea. I find that Raspberry Tea is a personal favorite of mine, so I always make some when I really need it. Warm drinks in general are proven to make a person feel warmer and more pleasant too, so hot chocolate or whatever floats your boat is probably fine too. And, of course, you can never go wrong with water. It’s the only drink that can make you feel significantly better after one sip, so pour yourself a cool glass and enjoy.
🐉 Watch some really nice Animation. Like Studio Ghibli, or Moomins, or Cartoon Saloon. Or even something like Loving Vincent if you're in the artsy, melancholic mood for it. Rewatch Spirited Away or The Cat Returns while you’re at it! I don't really have a super solid explanation for this one, except that Animation makes me happy. It inspires me. So it should be a good and kind friend in those darker moments too!
🕹️ Play some video games! Much like Animation, I love me some video games, so when I'm feeling up to it they can be a good stress relief when needed. I find that Zelda games, Kirby's epic yarn, and other games like Undertale are especially good for this. Try and pick something that's not too high-octane action. Well, unless you're mad and need to take it out on some Bokoblins, of course. Then that is perfectly acceptable. As long as it helps you, you’re doing just fine.
🧵 Re-experience some old things you used to love! Visit that Japanese Market you used to love as a kid, or pull out your old stuffed animal and cuddle with them again. Research Diplodocus like you used to as a kid, watch Peter Pan again, and accept all the emotions and nostalgia that comes with seeing these things with new eyes. Don't judge if you get a bit teary eyed, that's normal. Feed your inner child for once, they've been getting awfully hungry lately.
📕 Sit down and read. Like actually, genuinely read. Modern life always seems so fast paced and crazy, it can be hard to remember the quieter moments in there too. Reading helps us remember them. Pick up that Encyclopedia of Spirits tome you got forever ago, or one of those Art and Concept books that you love so much. It'll nourish your soul, I promise.
🕰️ Take a Nap!! Exhaustion kills, quite literally in fact. So just curl up somewhere, and doze off. Set a timer for a twenty minute power nap, or sleep for 5 hours on a Thursday afternoon! There are no rules for how much sleep you're "allowed" to get, so if your body needs it, do it!
🧹 Clean!! When you’ve got the energy for it, cleaning is a great way to clear both your room and your mind. Break it down into steps. Start with a very small section of your space and clean it thoroughly, then move on to the next. You’ll have the whole room done before you know it! A messy room may be fun, but it also creates a chaotic energy that can throw you off, so it’s good to go through and organize every once in a while to clean the space and the energy there.
🌾 Nature! For the love of god, just go outside. It doesn’t matter where it is, as long as there’s grass and trees and greenery, you’re in the right place. There’s a reason why Houseplants are so important to people; Humans need that greenery for both our physical and mental health. Go listen to the birds, take a walk that leads to nowhere, go water some plants and trees while you’re at it! Take care of the world, and it’ll care for you back. Hell, you can even build a little shrine to some nature spirits or a tree, and start leaving offerings there! Take care of your life in the most literal sense! Home is where the heart is, after all.
✏️ Draw! Something, anything, when it’s in your head, draw it out! Or look back at your old drawings and admire them sometimes. Like that drawing of Princess Peach in the heart-shaped glasses, or that Capybara eating ramen that you made a while ago. Remember how much fun you had making those? Remember the pencil lead stains on the side of your hand? Let the emotions of that drawing come back and fill you up again. Let them comfort you, feel them, and then let them go. Drawing is nourishment for the heart, so it’s important to do sometimes.
💕 Be kind and do nice things for others. Write a letter or send an email to someone you haven’t seen in forever! Give someone a compliment and strike up a friendly conversation! Make something or do a chore or errand for the ones you love! Humans are sociable creatures by nature, that’s pretty much the only reason we’ve survived this long, so give in to your compassion and do nice things! By helping others, you’ll help yourself even more.
🧼 Take a Bath or Shower! Go all fancy with it too! I’m talking your favorite playlist, some candles if it’s dark enough, maybe some bubbles or an open window to smell the fresh breeze. Really get into it, but make sure nobody’s washing dishes or anything, so you can have all that nice, hot water to yourself. Getting clean and feeling clean will help cleanse your soul as well! Oh, and make sure to pick out new clothes afterwards. You’ve probably been wearing those for awhile now, plus new clothes help drive home the cleansing feeling that comes with a bath.
⛲ Pick or schedule something to look forward to! Take a small trip to somewhere you really wanna visit, or go swimming for a bit after work! Even if it’s just something small like a nap or a meal you’re really excited for, try and find motivation to get you through until then. Having something to look forward to makes the day more bearable, so try and find something like that everyday!
📬 Make something! Put together a recommendations list of all your favorite things, with short notes about why you like them, and why others should enjoy them too. Make some memes about something you really like, or an idea that’s been stuck in your head for forever. Pick up a hobby like animation, so you can finally see your own drawings come to life, like you’ve always dreamed! A pen can’t win a battle, but the sword can’t heal the heart.
🍶 Start a Collection! Choose an item you really like, and start trying to find them everywhere you go. It helps make trips more meaningful when you’re actually looking for something at those gift shops. How about a collection of Witchy-themed Books, or Letters and Notes from meaningful people? That sounds so nice, doesn’t it?

Random Winter Headcanons!
It’s FECKING COLD where i live rn and im shivering in my room while envying my fat n’ fluffy cat’s fur coat, so... Have a smattering of random winter headcanons!
Winter is the least favorite season of a number of the Servamps, though the top contenders for “Fuck this season in particular” are Kuro and Jeje.
Lily is the only one who genuinely enjoys it, though he’s a tad annoyed that the nippy weather forces him to cover up. Misono, however, is grateful, even if he does have to put up with a near constant runny nose and Lily fussing over his health even more than usual
Since Jeje handles the cold particularly poorly thanks to being a reptile, Mikuni has taken to carrying Jeje in his coat pocket with one of those fancy reusable handwarmers stuffed in there with him. He claims it’s only because it’d be bad news if something happened and Jeje was too sluggish to protect him, but...
Mahiru goes with a different tactic and likes to place kitty Kuro in the front of his coat, carefully zipping it up so it doesn’t catch in his fur until only Kuro’s head is visible. The shared body heat ensures Kuro is nice and comfy, though he needs to be careful to not slip out the bottom of Mahiru’s coat they learned about that particular pitfall the hard way
Iduna is inhumanly immune to the cold and regularly shocks the people who know her by showing up in single layers, or even just outright coming to work in shorts despite there being snow on the ground outside. She gets scolded by Shuuhei a lot for doing this.
Freya has a surprisingly low tolerance for it in comparison and you can often find her bundled up to her ears, same as her Italian subclass. Despite how ridiculous she looks, people seem to avoid her even more than usual because all they can see of her are her eyes. It makes her sad lmao. Her spiced cider is literally the best.
More often than not, Licht is away from home for the holidays/his birthday, or else his parents are. He tries to act like it doesn’t bug him but Lawless has gotten quite good at reading his Eve’s moods and does his best to try and soften the sting where he can. Dragging Licht out to Tokyo’s Christmas Market was worth the kicks and yelling, just to see his Eve’s face light up once he realized what exactly was in front of his face. It wasn’t nearly as grand as the ones back home, but it was familiar, comforting, and showed a remarkable amount of forethought on Lawless’s part. After that point, it was Licht dragging Lawless around because he wanted to see and do and try everything.
Speaking of Lawless-- He knows a very old recipe for holiday meat pies that he pestered the cooks at Ophelia’s castle to teach him, as they were her favorite part of winter. He still remembers how to make them from scratch and ends up modifying the recipe to make mini ones to hand out to his siblings and their Eves per Krantz’s gentle encouragement. They’re delicious and he’s very picky about how they get made. Makes more work for himself, but he feels the end result is more than worth it. He’s considering selling them as a holiday special item at his Coffee Stand.
Mikuni is the kind of smug, insufferable bastard who refuses to make hot chocolate from a powder mix. Stove top or bust-- The recipe he uses is actually Lily’s and makes use of milk, vanilla, dutch cocoa powder, salt, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg... He prefers his with Almond Milk, because he’s a hipster like that. Making even powder mixes with water is tantamount to sacrilege to him.
Tsurugi’s always losing his gloves, scarves, hats, etc, and it drives Yumikage and Jun insane. One time they turned around after having spent the last ten minutes hunting down Takuto’s mittens to discover a sheepish Tsurugi without his. They wanted to kill him. Still helped him find them though
He’s far more careful with the knitwear Mahiru gifts him, with it’s soft yarn and sparkly, hand stitched lettering of “TK” in silver. It isn’t scratchy at all and nearly seems to be of professional quality, but even if it were the ugliest, most uncomfortable thing, he’d still treasure those clothing items just as much. Because Mahiru took the time to make something for worthless, money grubbing scum like him. His words, not mine

my @thewitchersecretsanta gift for @saltytransidiot!! I’m no IndigoDream, inexplicifics, round--robin, or any of the other amazing authors in this fandom, but I hope this makes you smile 💕💕
Jaskier absolutely loves wintering at Kaer Morhen. Geralt had finally worked up the nerve to invite him  to meet his family two years ago. They’d been together for thirteen years and together for a little over five.
Jaskier loves the winter because it’s really the only time Geralt gets to completely relax. With his father-figure (though none of them would ever admit it) and brothers there, isolated from a world that seems to wish them every harm.
read on ao3 here
Even after just two winters with them, Jaskier loves Lambert and Eskel. Not in the same way as he loves Geralt, of course, but as some mix of friend and brother. Eskel showed him around the library and Jaskier is teaching him how to craft his own lute, since every lute made for a human would be much too small. Lambert, while he loves his pranks, is quite clever and they can spend hours trading riddles and jokes.
He’d been expecting at least some animosity from Vesemir, considering he is the first “human” to enter Kaer Morhen since the raids. Geralt had blushed so adorably when Vesemir casually mentioned how often he talks about his bard. Jaskier likes doing food prep with him, though he’ll leave the actually cooking to the old wolf. The few times he tried… well, let’s just say those scorch marks in the stone of the kitchen weren’t completely intentional.
He loves cuddling up to Geralt in the evenings, all five of them around the crackling fireplace. He’d tried one sip of Lambert’s moonshine and started tearing up from the sheer amount of alcohol in it. The wolves would need a lot of human drinks to get drunk, so they usually only can during the winter. Every coin they make on the Path goes to food, shelter, supplies, and the occasional prostitute. Anyway, they don’t feel safe enough around humans to allow themselves to be in such a vulnerable state even if they did have the money.
Vesemir never gets terribly drunk. Actually, Jaskier has never seen him act even just the littlest bit intoxicated, even though the witchers drink from the same barrel and roughly the same amount. Eskel either stops after he feels tipsy or drinks until he falls asleep. Lambert usually has to be cut off once he starts suggesting things like going outside—during a blizzard—to spar. Naked.
And Geralt. Oh, how Jaskier loves his witcher. Completely sober, Geralt always maintains at least one point of contact with him if they’re in the same room. After one drink, he purrs easily and will grumble at Jaskier if he stops playing with his hair. At two, Geralt either pulls him into his lap, or is nearly in Jaskier's lap.
Somewhere between three and four is the adorable sweet-spot. When he hits this point, Geralt gets sad if Jaskier's attention strays from him too long. He demands many kisses, pouts if he only gets a peck, and whines adorably if Jaskier refuses him outright. Jaskier will herd him to their room at this point, where he cuddles his darling witcher until he falls asleep, secure in his arms.
This year, he is very much looking forward to exchanging their gifts. Geralt has been extremely secretive about his present, and the anticipation is killing him. This year, Jaskier’s gotten his love a couple new journals with some pencils, colored chalks, and a few paints.
Geralt recently shared that he initially had a lot of trouble with memorizing the bestiary. After the first couple beatings when he couldn’t answer the Masters’ questions, he learned that if he drew each monster, labeling as he went, he was able to retain the information much easier. Soon, he had a sketchbook completely filled with drawings and his only bruises were from training or roughhousing.
But once he’d memorized the bestiary completely, he didn’t want to stop drawing. So he started filling up notebooks with sketches of herbs and flowers, whether or not they had a use. Then he turned to anything he could think of, really.
Nothing is secret in Kaer Morhen though, and the other trainees mocked him mercilessly about it. Eventually he just stopped drawing altogether. Once he was on the Path, he didn’t exactly have much coin to spare on such frivolous things.
When the bard started improving his image, however… Geralt found his coin-purse to be not nearly as empty as it was before. Still, he worried that Jaskier would make fun of him about this hidden interest as well.
He honestly can’t even remember how, but Jaskier did find out and actually supported it, surprisingly. Jaskier had even been the one to buy his first notebook along with a few different pencils.
He never made fun of him, instead praising his art to a near ridiculous extent. Ridiculous to Geralt, that is. Jaskier insisted he was merely being honest.
Now Yule is coming up, and Jaskier has his gifts prepared. The art supplies for Geralt. A good set of strings for Eskel’s lute and some more sheet music. For Lambert he’s brought a book of 500 names since the idiot never calls his horses anything but “Horse” as well as more of that fancy soap he pretends to hate.
Vesemir is always the toughest. The old wolf doesn’t want for much, and it’s pretty bad form—in Jaskier's opinion—to give a person a gift they’ve already received in the past. Last year, Jaskier gave him an extremely old book of poetry written in Elder Speech he’d gotten for a steal at the market. The poor merchant had absolutely no idea about the true value of it!
That find had just been a fluke however, but he somehow got lucky again this year.
--
Now, four Wolves and one bard lounge by an open fire, safe and content. Jaskier takes another sip of his hot tea, the warmth spreading through his body. He can’t help but snuggle in closer to Geralt, who squeezes him gently with the arm around his waist. Finally, it’s time to open presents.
Jaskier insists they open their gifts from him first. He simply can’t take any more anticipation; he needs to know what they think. They’ll probably like them, but there’s always that little niggling voice telling him they’ll only say they like it to be polite.
“Oh, fuck you.” It seems Lambert has opened his gift the fastest. “And why do you keep getting me this fancy-pantsy soap?”
“Why do you keep using it?” Jaskier teases. Geralt chuckles at Lambert’s petulant grumble. Warmth completely unrelated to his tea blooms in Jaskier's chest. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being nice to yourself every once in a while, my little wolf.”
Lambert growls at him, but can’t protest because he is several decades younger than Jaskier.
Eskel and Vesemir love their gifts, which is good because Jaskier had no doubt whatsoever that they would. Absolutely none.
He turns to Geralt, who had been able to open his gift with only the one hand, and is staring down at the art supplies in his lap. Jaskier doesn’t think he’s breathing. His heart drops. “Darling? It’s okay if you don’t like-”
Geralt quickly sets the gift aside, pulling him into a bone-crushing hug. His shoulders are shaking suspiciously. “Oh! Oh, my dear. I take it you do like your present, then?” Jaskier tries to add a teasing tone to his words, but he really was not expecting this kind of reaction.
“Thank you,” Geralt whispers emphatically into his neck.
Jaskier adjusts his grip on his—thankfully unsplit—tea and hugs him back just as fiercely. After a moment, Geralt releases him, kissing him softly.
There’s a gagging sound to their right and Jaskier has to pull away to laugh. Eskel cuffs Lambert on the back of the head—almost starting a spat—but Vesemir growls at them before it can go much further.
They move on to opening Vesemir’s gifts, no one mentioning the water in Geralt's eyes. Despite being crass and rough with each other, the Wolves know when not to make fun of something.
They open their gifts from Geralt last. Jaskier unties the meticulously wrapped string and unfolds the paper. Inside is something made from yarn, a light lavender that’s ever-so-slightly reflective. He runs a finger over the indescribably soft yarn, breathing in sharply. The fabric unfolds as he picks it up, revealing it to be a long scarf. Holding it closer, he can see the beautiful design woven along its entire length. There are a few breaks in the pattern, but they only make it more perfect.
Geralt spent gods know how long making this, either late at night or early in the morning, most likely frustratedly undoing his work half the time. That he spent so much time and effort, remembering how Jaskier is sensitive to the cold, and deciding to do something about it… His eyes prickle with an emotion he cannot name, he only knows that the word “love” is not strong enough.
He looks up at Geralt, who seems nervous. “Darling… You made this?” he whispers, just to be sure. Geralt nods and Jaskier mimics his love’s actions from earlier, throwing his arms around him—mindful of his drink, of course—and holding him close. “I love it so much. I can’t even imagine how difficult it must have been!” Jaskier releases him and holds the scarf up. “Will you put it on me?”
With reverent hands, Geralt wraps it loosely around his neck. Jaskier rubs a cheek against the yarn, breathing in Geralt's scent, etched into every fiber.
What happened after that, Jaskier honestly couldn’t tell you. The rest of the night passes in a sort of happy daze. Geralt gets all gooey with him and Vesemir herds them all off to bed.
He would have slept with the scarf on, but his dear witcher is much too fond of falling asleep with his nose buried in Jaskier's neck. They both relish in the little touches. Being able to hear the other’s heartbeat, feel their chest move as they breathe.
The undeniable truth of it gets to Jaskier sometimes. That scarf is just one more testament to their love. He really had been loathe to part with it so soon, but it would have just become tangled or stifling in the night. Besides, no item of clothing—even one made by Geralt—could ever amount to the man himself.

Fancy Yarn Market,Forecast to 2022
Fancy Yarn Market,Forecast to 2022
A fancy yarn is a kind of yarn that differs from normal construction of single plain yarns by the way deliberately produced irregularities in its construction. These irregularities relate to an increased input of one or more of its components or to the inclusion of its periodic effects such as knots, slubs, curls or the like.

BUILDING UP A FOREIGN TRADE ACTIVITY IS PRECEDED BY BUILDING UP A BUSINESS
Tumblr media
picture: modern lace worker, Brussels
Introduction
I have written this text to share it with my postgraduate students from the VUB. They start a year of International Trade and Investment full of courage from various nationalities and from various study backgrounds. They do this with a great deal of diligence and dedication but often find that they do not master the premises: the fact that the course deals with doing business, producing, trading, buying and selling. For many of them, who are at the start of a professional life, even the theoretical knowledge about this is lacking.
That is why I have decided, during an hour and a half, with many examples, to try and guide them in doing business.
1. Doing business
Doing business takes only three forms: it is either about producing something or about purchasing items and then reselling them, or about selling one’s own knowledge and skills to third parties. People sometimes need material for the latter, but they don't sell it. People only sell their workforce and intelligence. The latter are called services. Although they account for between 75% and 80% of the economic activities in most countries, in this article I will deliberately limit myself to agriculture and the manufacturing industry. Because in this presentation we want to end up at trading with foreign partners, and this is primarily about tangible products.
Two stories can support this:
The company F.E. T* 2011, 100 km from the Ukrainian capital Kiev has 2000 ha of land, which it owns partially and leases mostly (long lease 50 y). 80% of the farm’s turnover comes from traditional crops, such as wheat and corn. In order to make future oriented products, the farmer started to develop an entire line (30 items) of dairy products from goat milk, to yoghurt and kephir and even ice cream since 2016. Today the income of this activity line is good for 20% of the turnover. The farmer aims at reaching 50% over 5 years. The goats have been purchased in France and a breeding process started. They now have 1500 goats and intent to increase the amount to up to 3000 goats. They have a milk production capacity for up to 7000 l/day. They are at 2000 l/day. The equipment for milk treatment is Israeli, as well as the milk production supervisor. Cheese production equipment comes from France and Italy as well as their cheese making consultant. The ice cream consultant comes from Italy. The farmer goes yearly to a large goat fair Caprina in France where he learns about gear and equipment and meets potential consultants. This dairy line is a typical example of vertical integration. The production is entirely mastered by the farm from the breeding of goats, the collection and distillation of the milk, the production of the dairy products, the production of the bottles out of small plastic objects purchased in China, the bottling, the development of logo and packaging design, the packaging and the transportation to the retailers. Important is that the farm does and finances market research, developed its own brand Z*, as well as its own design with colour codes. They even intend to create in the future a second high-end brand. These steps enables them to grow organically and in a sustainable way. They declined until now to produce for private labels of retailers. Even with Auchan, with whom they negotiate now, they declined the private label production.
The company W* close to Chisinau in Moldova sells tractors and agricultural equipment from the brand C*, of which they have a dealership agreement during 3 years in Moldova. Before they had a dealership with the Italian M* G*.  They also sell equipment from the Swedish brand V*. The company recently built new premises as rep office for C*. They built a state of the art show room and offices with workshop for repairing. The company also sells fertilisers and pesticides as well as seeds for crops. They don’t sell liquids but solid boxes. Their suppliers are BASF, Bayer, Pioneer for the seeds. They produce also seeds themselves (sunflowers).
Services companies are often related to ICT development. Until five years ago, ICT focused primarily on processes and their management. Because of our increasingly complex society, which demands more transparency, which requires faster and more thorough reporting, and which is monitored more and more, large companies have to manage such large volumes of data that they can use help for this. Data is becoming very important, now even more for large, say, listed companies. But medium-sized companies will suffer the same fate in the future. The engineers at the -nowadays “unicorn”- company C* in Brussels are active in data governance and in data stewardship. In this way they do not address the IT departments within a company, but rather the business people themselves..  There are 20 potential customers in Belgium. That is why they had resolutely gone international from the start. They are mainly talking to banks, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, etc. But also large governments, large public companies, universities.
2. Import and export
Import and export are often activities that go together in the same company. A company often needs products that are not present in its own country or that are present at too high a price or of poor quality. The company needs these products both to make its own products and to sell them to other customers. He will therefore have to import them. A company is sometimes approached at a trade fair or thanks to its website via e-mail by foreign companies who are convinced that they can use the semi-finished products or raw materials that our company produces in their own production process. In other circumstances our company finds a foreign-interested company at a trade fair that is convinced that there is a market for our company's products in its country and that it wants to sell it there.
3. Producing and selling products.
A company from the manufacturing industry needs raw materials or semi-finished products to make its own products. Depending on the type of quality that they wish to deliver, they must determine where they will purchase their raw materials. Are these present in the country itself or do they have to import them? They also need machines to manufacture their products. Depending on the quality that they are trying to deliver, on their financing options and on the number of staff they have at their disposal, they will purchase their machines, either abroad or domestically but often from abroad.
The company O* in Obuchov,Ukraine has machinery for 2 types of products: polyamide and cotton for women and children socks. They are the second producer in Ukraine. The cotton comes from Turkey, the polyamide from Italy, the elastane from Korea through Poland, the yarn from Italy.
The company D* in Chisinau, Moldova produces fiberglass mesh for construction, especially walls and insolation. It produces 1,2 M m²/month. Thanks to a new machine of the K* from Chemnitz they will be able to double their production to 2.5 M m²/month. They export 90% of his product to Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, Spain and Italy. The company has 100 staff members and is looking this to extend by recruiting 40 new staff members. They have difficulties to find qualified staff. The raw material comes by 80 % from Bielarus, by 20% % from Germany, Switzerland, Latvia and Poland.
4. Buying and selling products
This activity is often performed by a permanent sales representative in a region or a country. This person or company can be established as self-employed in the country (agent, shop / webshop), or can be established as a subsidiary of the foreign company (sales office, shop / webshop) with its own legal status. A representative on the payroll of the foreign company may also be located in the country: he may sell the products but the deal is concluded by the main house abroad and the invoice also comes from the main house. The company W* described above, also houses the rep office of the company for whom they do the sales in the Chisinau region.
Why are companies entering and selling products from abroad? There can be several reasons for this. It is possible that a specific type of machine or product is not produced on the local market because the size of the country is too small for it. It may also be that the importer can deliver in a cheaper way than the products already on the market. It may also be that the new products are much more sophisticated and can therefore make them work much more productively. It may also be that products have built up such a reputation or became a brand that is in demand throughout the world. This last one is the case for many fancy clothing brands like Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior etc.
Which products do companies offer abroad? That can be anything: from raw materials such as seeds for agriculture, yarns for textiles or fiberglass for construction, to semi-finished products such as fabrics for clothing, goats for milk and cheese production to finished products such as luxury clothing, refrigerators but also cooling installations for cold storage.
The company V* – Groups Ltd  in Kiev, Ukraine is a trader. He buys cereals and looks for opportunities. He does business with Sri Lanka, Myanmar, India and many other countries. His warehouse capacity was insufficient and obsolete. He stocked on the ground floor. With a bank loan he has been able to construct 2 grain silos of 3,018 tons capacity each. The silos are erected close to a railway platform, thus avoiding logistical problems and damage to the goods. He found a new business opportunity with Sri Lanka for sale of split yellow peas and next requires an optical sorting machine.
5. The production or purchasing process and its financial aspects
A production company might purchase raw materials or semi-finished products from elsewhere. Before the production of their new product is finished, several weeks or months sometimes pass. And then the new product must still be put on the market, sold and the invoice must be paid. A company therefore needs a financial buffer: that is called working capital. Chocolate producers in Belgium and Switzerland who supply products for the Chinese New Year, which often takes place in February, start their production in September of the year before! Companies often purchase large quantities of raw materials at times when they are offered cheaply and stock them for later production. The same applies to a store: it purchases finished products to resell in the store. There is also a lead time of several days, weeks or months. Here, too, the store needs a buffer called working capital.
The company O* in Ukraine makes pavement tiles out of concrete with artistic top layers. They  produce 300 different types of pavement in 60 different shapes. They also produce stone levelling machines of the brand W*. They have offices in Lviv, Ukraine but have their production is set-up 80 km further, where they have 4 separate plants. During winter season, because of the cold, the production is stopped. They received a loan from the bank over 3 year for working capital, since January 2017. The additionality of this loan type for O* is the tenor: 3 years’ working capital enables a company to plan strategically: buy raw material when prices are low and stock it in order to produce through a longer period. And also have a 5-month buffer stock in times of scarcity through political crisis. They have large storage capacities (70.000 tons) for as well raw as finished material.
But those companies also need machines for their production, storage areas, large stores for their sales, trucks for their transport, tractors to work their land. They purchase them or build them with a bank loan. The cost of that loan must be passed on in the selling price. These loans, which are usually of a longer duration, are called investment capital. A company can also invest with its own resources.
The company K* , a wine production company in Georgia specialises in making wines for the lower and medium segment, priced at USD 5 to 8 /bottle. 75% of its production goes to the former CIS countries, of which 50% to Russia, where they have a distributor with the necessary connections, the remainder goes to Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia. The  final 25% goes to China, US and recently, the UK. In 2016 the company invested in new reservoir tanks, fermentation facilities, refrigerators, a steam generator and a filling & labelling line. The client received in total a loan from BoG. In 2017, the company reapplied for a second loan for land, construction, production facilities over 36 months. Additionally,  they invested in health and safety procedures for the workers, environmental protection (by reducing ozone depleting substances), low voltage machinery, electromagnetic compatibility and in measures for materials that come in contact with food. Thanks to the investments the company increased its production volume from 4,6 m litres in 2016 to 6 m litres in 2017, an impressive 35% increase. In labelling and bottling they were able to increase production by 50%.
6. Access to finance
All research reports around the world reveal that access to finance is the aspect that most often blocks the growth of SMEs. Working capital is usually requested for relatively short periods, such as three, six or twelve months. However, the amounts required are often important. The duration of the loan for capital goods is longer: this depends on the price and durability of the good: a computer is outdated after 4 years, a car or light truck starts to show signs of wear after 5 years, machines will certainly be operational during 10 to 20 years, industrial buildings as well. But do the banks have any loans with this duration for all those terms?
A bank's assignment is simple and difficult at the same time. A bank collects money from people who can spare the cash for a certain period of time and gives a fee for this. In Western Europe and North America, this allowance has been peanuts for several years. In Eastern Europe, Africa, large parts of Asia and Latin America, this allowance is quite substantial. Yet most of these “savers” are wary of leaving their money with the banks for too long: they want to buy things with it, or they do not trust the monetary policy of their country and are always afraid of a devaluation of their currency. With the money that banks collect from citizens and companies, they finance loans. They earn their profit through the spread between the interest rate they give for the savings and the interest rate they charge for the credits. But it is difficult for them to grant 10-year loans if they can only collect one-year savings. Moreover, there are few citizens who put away savings for 20 years. The only ones that do that are the pension funds. But what if there aren't any in a country? Which is the case in many countries. The international financial institutions such as African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Investment Bank and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development offer longer-term loans to local banks, that can then transfer them to their customers. Only: most of those loans are in dollars or euros. Again a problem. Because the citizens and companies of the country usually do not have repayment capacity in dollars or euros but in the local currency. And if that local currency is not stable and has a tendency to devalue frequently, local banks are not keen to withdraw long-term dollars or euro loans. Hedging is the only option that remains. Hedging is a type of contract that a bank concludes with a specialized institution to mitigate the risk of devaluation: the contract foresees the exchange rate of euro / dollar to the local currency at the time of repayment, even if the local currency has meanwhile been devalued. Hedging in this case can be considered as a type of insurance. And there are now some companies that also dare to hedge "exotic" currencies. The price ,for this insurance is important though: up to 7 % of the amount.
Banks also do not like to take risks. It is often the central bank of the country that obliges them to be very restrictive in giving loans. Because they have been confronted in the past with bad loans to large outdated government companies that were poorly managed and therefore worked with losses. Governments that have to bear such a burden then hit back with the blunt ax and prevent any loan that is not covered by collateral. Where all statistics indicate that lending to SMEs is much less risky!
Therefore: collateral. In many countries, the way collaterals can be offered to guarantee credit is limited to tangible assets: buildings, land, machines. Intangible assets like the company’s goodwill are  not accepted. The valuation of the tangible assets is by law done by the Association of property evaluators. These experts apply the principle of “market value coverage”. Based upon their valuation the size of collateral is put by the bank. It mostly comes to 140% of the loan. Once a credit is taken, the bank declares it to the central credit reporting system. Based upon the regularity of the reimbursement a company is classified class 1, 2, 3 or 4.  Class 1 is all payments are done on a regular basis. Class 2 is a company of which arrears were limited from  30 to 60 days. Companies with arrears of between 60 and 90 days are class 3. Companies with arrears of more than 90 days are sent to recovery as class 4. Recovery is compulsory and taken from the profit automatically and can therefore jeopardise the existence of the company. In certain cases the collateral will be sold without warning.
7. Difficulties to tackle
Managing a company goes further than ensuring that people and machines work, that stocks are replenished, that bills are paid and that sales run smoothly. There are constant obstacles that need to be overcome: the financial aspect, the transport aspect, the legal aspect and - once a company starts exporting - the political aspect.
7.1. The banking aspect
A company is practically obliged to work with a bank: it has to make payments and it often needs funds for working capital and for investments.
Payments go faster and smoother nowadays thanks to automation and now also thanks to fintech applications. There are payment cards and credit cards that allow customers to pay without cash and give the collecting company the assurance that the money will be in the account. There are international transaction systems such as SWIFT or the European IBAN that create uniformity between banks and countries and thereby make payment transactions run faster and more efficiently. The currency aspect remains a stumbling block. Although more and more currencies are freely exchangeable, there are still a lot of them that are not convertible. Contracts with companies from such countries are therefore often in USD, EUR or CNY. Banks that operate in those countries are not always considered reliable by the others and must therefore be patterned by an internationally respected confirming bank. There are even countries with which the US in particular are in conflict. They then oblige all banks in the world not to do transactions with banks from that country. Iran, Cuba and North Korea have been assigned such a fate. There are always solutions, but they are complicated and time-consuming.
We have already explained the credit aspect: the fact that in many countries long-term loans are far more the exception than the rule. The extravagant guarantees that are requested. The non-customer-oriented thinking of banks that only wait until a loan is repaid and have no eye for the growth of companies and the usefulness that these can have for the further development of a country. But also the positive role for SMEs that IFIs play such as African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Investment Bank.
Last but not least is the interest charged on loans. In many countries, the interest rate is a double digit, and companies think this is freakish. Where do those freak interest rates come from? The Central Bank of a country offers its banks short-term loans to banks that need them to clear a deficit for one or a few days ("overnight" or tomorrow-next day = “tom-next”). The Central Bank itself is able to provide with these loans because it borrows money on the international money market and pays interest for that. The interest rate the central has to pay for that depends on the country's rating, which is the appreciation of the economy and the way a country makes economic progress. That appreciation is indicated depending on the rating agency with numbers and letters and reflects on the local currency. The lower those ratings are, the more risk premium a central bank has to pay on the international money market. She therefore passes on the risk premium to the local banks, which naturally also pass it on to their customers. Hence countries where the banks demand a double digit interest, when they provide with loans in local currency.
7.2. The transport system
Goods must reach the customer from the workplace. That requires transport. Road transport and train transport are usually the first choice for domestic transport. River transport is still very limited in Europe, is much more present in Asia. When it comes to transport to foreign destinations for import or export, the nature of the product - its weight, its durability, the urgency of the customer - determines the choice between truck, train, ship or plane. All these means of transport have their own international documents, luckily. International rules have also been worked out that determine who becomes the owner of the goods and when. These rules are called the Incoterms, and there are so 11 containing 3 letters each. There are RULES FOR EVERY TYPE OF TRANSPORTATION and there are RULES FOR OVERSEAS AND INLAND TRANSPORTATION BY VESSEL.
Import and export is also about customs and import duties to be paid. It is important to realize the value of customs zones such as the EU and free trade zones such as NAFTA, Mercosur, ECOWAS or ASEAN. The service provider that is most approached by companies to steer this aspect of transport in the right direction is the freight forwarder.
Transporting also entails risks: goods can be damaged or stolen, incidents such as harbor strikes can occur, so that perishable goods do not reach the customer in time. There are insurance policies for these types of problems, but they obviously cost and there is not always room to pass them on to the end customer.
7.3. The legal aspect
Trading within the same country offers few surprises once one knows the legal framework in which one operates. Foreign managers are often surprised that things are not treated in the same way everywhere. Anglo-Saxon legislation is based on a completely different approach than the European continental one. A contract based upon Anglo-Saxon law contains minimum 30 pages, a continental European one can be limited to three-four pages because everything is in the law.  In the other continents, the laws were partly inspired by Americans and partly by Europeans. A treacherous aspect in the U.S. is, for example, the principle of litigation: one is going to provoke newcomers and then be able to sue them for not respecting the legislation.
A second aspect is the lack of certain pieces of legislation such as the law on bankruptcy, the law on pledging commercial goods, the law on claiming goods and objects, the mortgage legislation.
A third aspect is the independence of the courts. This is essential if the rule of law is to work objectively. But in many countries, judges are nationalistic, so a case brought to court by a foreign company, or where the foreign company needs to defend itself, is lost in advance.
7.4. The tax aspect
Taxes are the deepest expression of the deepest emotion of a country: there are hundreds and they take different aspects everywhere, even within a country. Brazil, the US and India are federal countries in which the states can collect taxes. And do so with pleasure. Informing yourself in advance is of the utmost importance because it can drastically influence the price worked out by consultants to the end consumer. And one must also know that the principle of VAT is not used all over the world, especially not in the US. Tax declarations are another aspect that one needs to check beforehand. In the US, certain spontaneous declarations are assumed, the consequences of a non-spontaneous declaration can be horrendous.
The last aspect that should be taken into account are the double taxation treaties. Thanks to this, a company only has to pay tax once, either in its home country or in the trading country. That is, for example, the reason why Belgian companies trade with China via Hong Kong.
7.5. The business development aspect
The Access to finance aspect has many consequences. Opportunities can pass because companies in a country have insufficient production capacity. This requires heavier and more efficient machines that cannot be purchased due to the lack of collateral.
The pharmaceutical production company I* in Cape Verde, Africa exported since 1995 to Angola and Mozambique. Those markets became too large and the company’s production capacity was unable to produce the required quantities based upon the governmental tenders they won. The quality is good, but the production capacity is not adapted to large markets.
The same goes for the printing sector in Rwanda, Africa who cannot fulfill orders to print packaging material on time because the local industry is unable to produce cardboard of the correct quality. All packaging cardboard has to be imported. And transportation over road in Africa is perilous and time consuming.
Another aspect that triggers problems is the cultural one. Our company I* in Cape Verde limits its export to Portuguese speaking countries, because otherwise they have to print several packaging types and product information, and they can’t stock it. Coca Cola has been active in China since 1995. That does not mean that the first years of the sales effort were a success. The Chinese were not used to drinking ice-cold drinks: their preference was for hot drinks. So it took Coca-Cola a lot of marketing effort to convince them that ice-cold drinks could quench their thirst. Eastern European wine producers from Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova have had to put a lot of effort into adapting their wines to Western European tastes. Eastern Europeans simply like semi-sweet wines and do not touch dry wines. In Western Europe, semi-sweet wines can only be sold to a very limited segment. It has therefore required a great deal of investment in new storage and maturing capacity (wooden or metal barrels) to produce specifically for Western Europe at a competitive price.
8. Geography and geopolitics
An International Trade and Investment student can be expected to find countries on a map. He can also be expected to realize that there are numerous free trade agreements between countries and groups of countries such as EU, NAFTA, Mercosur, ECOWAS, East-African Community, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN countries).
While a customs union and a free trade area are similar in some ways, they are also different. A customs union represents a higher level of economic integration than a free trade area does. The key distinction between customs unions and free trade areas, however, involves their approach to non-treaty nations. While a customs union, by definition, requires all parties to the agreement to establish identical external tariffs with regard to trade with non-treaty nations (those nations that are not signatories to the agreement), members of a free trade area are free to establish whatever tariff rates with respect to foreign imports from non-signatory nations that they deem necessary or desirable. An example of a customs union is the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). An example of free trade area is the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA). Members of the EU, the largest and most productive customs union in existence,, have agreed to, among other criteria for membership, maintain a common external tariff system with respect to outside nations. Free trade areas, like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), are less cohesive to the extent that each of the three member nations, the United States, Canada and Mexico, are free to establish tariff policies distinct from each other.
But it is also important for him to grasp that some organizations and initiatives are not only created or organized inspired by goodwill. Certain organizations have been established for power reasons. Some have old-colonial some have also neo-colonial intentions. They exist, one has to work with them and sometimes for them, one can do business with them. One should not necessarily respond enthusiastically to them.
Students are invited to study the background, objectives and history of the following organizations: the Road and Belt initiative, Eurasian economic union, USAid, Eastern Partnership Agreement + DCFTA, Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) , Organization international de la Francophonie (OIF), the Commonwealth of Nations.

F’nor Azril
Tumblr media
THE BASICS ––– –
Name: F’nor Azril. Formerly Fonn Byquist, but due to her leaving her people she’s adopted the Mi’qote mechanic of naming, not initially understanding the apostrophes in their names. She’s stuck with it though, as she finds bears to be a good representation of her solitary wanderings and stout self reliance.
Age: Seasons come and seasons go, so why count them? 87
Birthday: 30th Sun of the 5th Umbral Moon
Race: Viera, Rava.
Gender: Trans woman.
Sexuality: Pansexual.
Marital Status: Single.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE ––– –
Hair: A burnished copper that abruptly shifts to black tips. Recently shorn short after an incident with an ink pot, though she kept one long braid on her right side that she fiddles with on occasion. Usually brushing the end against her lips and chin as she’s thinking.
Eyes: Left eye Cactuar green. Right eye a startling vibrant purple, which she’s blind in. Usually keeps her right eye covered with a patch, or wears glasses to aid her ailing eyesight.
Height: 5 fulms, 10 ilms.
Build: Wirey, in a word. She’d look scrawny if not for lean corded muscles defining her arms and legs. F’nor’s physique is reminiscent of tough roots. Long hours of traveling by foot the length and breadth of the map, she’s in peak physical condition.
Distinguishing Marks: A smattering of freckles across her cheeks and the oddity of her purple right eye. Beyond which F’nor is relatively free of any other distinguishing features. Perhaps ink smudges on her face, ink stained finger tips from absentminded quill work. Or a myriad of minor nicks and scrapes from hard travel, but they quickly heal and fade in due time.
Common Appearance:  Almost always in her orange poncho and traveling moccasins, she stands out like a sore thumb. Though often her poncho isn’t quite as flashy due in no small part to the large quantity of road dust she accumulates on her wandering.  Sometimes wearing an eye patch, sometimes wearing glasses, sometimes she just forgets either until reminded. An idle stance of crossed arms and bemused curiosity finish her ensemble.
PERSONAL ––– –
Profession: Vagabond story hoarder, cartographer and amateur botanist.
Hobbies Reading, collecting and sampling tea, retrieving odd little artefacts.
Languages: Common, Vieran
Residence: Wherever she happens to find herself in the evening. Sometimes a travelers lodge, other times at a campfire by herself.
Birthplace: An out of the way corner of the Golmore Jungle.
Religion: Better to acknowledge the gods than to deny or doubt they exist.
Patron God: Azeyma, though she honestly falls under the patronage of Oschon more so.
Fears: Large crowds of people, confinement, spiders.
RELATIONSHIPS ––– -
Spouse: None
Children: None
Parents: As a Viera who has left the fold, F’nor is dead to her parents
Siblings: None
Other: None
Pets: A toad named Hopalong and her trusty chocobo Farstrider.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ––– –
Smoking Habit: Sometimes after a hard days travel a pipe of weed is nice to unwind with, especially by a campfire with a good book.
Drugs: No particular habit for drugs.
Alcohol: Has a soft spot for harder spirits, particularly earthy and smokey flavored drinks. Like whisky (difference between Whisky and Whiskey is one without the E is Scotch and with the E is every other Whiskey besides Scottish Whisky. I don’t really know how that translates into game lore, but I’m sure there’s a distinction somewhere. There’s not an overly in depth dive into the alcohols brewed by the various races and regions. Or at least that I’m aware of)

RP HOOKS ––– –
Not all who wander are lost: F’nor likes to wander. To explore, to rove off from the beaten path and travel paths less traveled. The world is a wide and wild place dramatically different from the sweltering confines of the Golmore jungle. As such she can be found wandering the byways of Aldenard exploring ever outward from Limsa Lominsa. Currently her travels have taken her into the winter locked lands of Coerthas where she was not properly prepared for the cold and as such promptly turned back around to the Shroud of Gridania to better outfit herself for the horrendous cold. Though not one for staying in anyone one place long, who knows when she’ll move on to another portion of the world?
A message in a bottle? How curious... - A chance encounter of finding a stoppered bottle in a tree she was harvesting for mirror apples has piqued F’nor’s curiosity. Opening the bottle to reveal the contents to be a vague and crude map she’s avidly been tearing her way through every tree, bush and rock looking for more of these mysterious bottles. If you chance upon a madly muttering Viera diving head long into a bush or peering into every knothole on a tree, odds are good you’ve ran into F’nor. Treasure finding and the satisfaction of solving these vague scraps of parchment are one of her most favored past times. Not only does it set her off on a whirlwind adventure, usually on the spur of the moment, it usually has her go to places she’s never been. Truly a win win situation. If you have a map and are willing to share the journey with her, she’ll happily tag along for the journey alone. The trifles and baubles dug up might interest her, but she’ll happily abide by map owners claim for the rewards.
Tale as old as time - Besides seemingly wandering aimlessly and mapping her travels, F’nor’s rambling jaunts across hill and dale serve a greater purpose. Though the reason is equally vague as her meandering. She’s on the hunt for stories, folk tales, anecdotes and myths of the regions she roves through. If you’ve got some time and are willing to spin a yarn or two, F’nor’ll be more than happy to share her fire and company to listen to you.
Ramblin’ Woman  - Once primed to a subject matter, F’nor has a tendency to just... well... run at the mouth. Sometimes she’ll wax poetically. Other times she’ll just talk for what seems like hours. There’s no rhyme or reason to when she’ll set off like a chocobo in search of choice gysahl greens. Just prepare for a veritable deluge of talk about whatever topic has currently caught her fancy. That’s not to say some folks can’t get a word in edge wise, she’s attentive and will let whomever she’s bludgeoning with words have a chance to speak. She just fully intends to have her say first. At length. Much to many a persons dismay. Seemingly a rather quiet individual, she’ll often blindside a random stranger who just wanted to sit in peace and quiet by another seemingly quiet stranger. However if you’re up to the challenge of mincing words with the quirkily gregarious Viera, have at. She likes a good talk, particularly if it’s something she’s fascinated by. Truth be told, that can be just about anything. She’s an avid hoarder of information.
Absentminded Woolgatherer - Lost in thought, head in the clouds, feet off the ground. F’nor is likely off in her own little world thinking about who knows what. Caught in the rain without cloak or other rain protection, she’ll blithely wander around, gaze fixed inward as she plods on. Sometimes she’ll wander into an inn or market stall and blink in surprise and wonderment as to how she got to be where she is. Sometimes if she’s particularly caught up in her own thoughts she’ll run into you, your chocobo, that tree over there. She’ll bounce off random objects and reorient herself and go careening off until she runs into the next object in her path. Hells, she might even wander into a stream, cross it, and walk around with squelching boots without noticing what she’s done. She didn’t mean to startle you. Oh and if she doesn’t apologize, sorry. Thoughts in chaos and all that.
CONTACT INFORMATION and OOC NOTES ––– –
‘eyo and hello and hi and all that jazz, greetings etc. F’nor’s and old hat of mine that has been rattling around the byways for a long and long time. I’ve been role playing in a variety of different formats for... an astonishingly long time now that I think about it. Pen and Paper since I was twelve, other table top rpgs, video games and what not for a good going on twenty years now. Yes, that means I’m 32. Or turning 32 this year. I honestly stopped counting somewhere in my twenties. Honestly that’s just an excuse for me to say I forget regularly how old I am exactly. I’m in this community to have fun, to build wonderful stories. To revel in shared experience and craft truly remarkable things with you. So, why don’t you come and join me on this adventure? It’s a long road and best shared with good friends, good food and good drink.   Side note, I’m not really into ERP. Romance might happen, things develop organically. Might go the way of a pleasant night of shared company that gets a little more intimate. But I’m just flat out bad at it and even gets a bit tedious. There’s only so many ways one can write about sexual encounters before it gets repetitive. If that’s your thing, fine and good, just don’t try and drag me into it. Please and thank you.   You can find me here on tumblr on either this blog or my other inspiration blog @fnorazril. You can also get a hold of me on discord as well as Transdimensional Shambler#0179. Not to mention Balmung of FFXIV, though more often I’m on Mateus bumbling around chasing a courier.

Fighting the Chill at the Homestead
So Dean runs hot, sleeps on top of the blankets most of the year, and seems genuine in his concern that the electric blanket is a fire hazard, but it's December and the central heating in the farmhouse is pretty crappy, and also our husband's feet feel like they're made of ice, so... 2 to 1, the ayes have it, out comes the best 75 bucks we ever spent at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
There are some downsides to having bed be the most comfortable spot in the house. I definitely run less often when I'm so warm in the mornings and remember how cold it'll be outside, and it practically takes a crowbar to get Cas out of bed when it's his turn to do the morning chores (again, he's a damn heat sink). Also, it means Dean banishes himself to the far side of the big bed (or to his own room) for the better part of three months a year, but given it keeps him from kicking me awake in his sleep every other night, I won't exactly be crying myself to sleep over that one. (JK - we miss him. He's a more vital contributor to cuddling than he'll admit.)
So given the downsides, I thought this week I'd share some of our favourite ways to keep that cozy feeling alive and well even when there's three feet of snow on the ground and yes, you really, really gotta get up and feed the chickens, babe. Including a few nice, warm, and not totally out of season recipes.
Keep a fire going. It's actually not that hard to keep a fire running all day (and all night, if you have a set up to safely handle that) without wasting a ton of firewood, as long as you base your fire building technique on keeping big hardwood logs going rather than feeding in kindling. It heats up a house a lot faster than electricity, and depending on the size of your house, might be comparable to a furnace. Obviously, though, you have to feed it throughout the day, and for safety you shouldn't leave it unattended. We have a fireplace in the farm house, but if you're lucky enough to have a wood burning stove it's probably even more optimized to heat the house. Regardless, it's nice to have a warm spot to hang out without totally bundling up in blankets and falling asleep!
Tea! Dean and I have a pretty strong tolerance for caffeine, and can drink coffee throughout the day without an issue, but Cas starts feeling the jitters if he doesn't switch to tea, or even just hot water, about noon. Compared to coffee, it's also way less dehydrating and can in fact serve as a substitute to drinking cold water throughout the day which can be hard to think of as necessary when you're already chilly. We haven’t tried making our own herbal tea blends, yet, but it’s something Cas is likely to give a shot in the coming year.
Knit goodies. Since this is a homesteading blog, how about something else you can make yourself and reduce your dependence on the dubiously sustainable, often exploitative clothing market? Hats, scarves, and when you get good, gloves, are always a little warmer with the pride of knowing you made something with your own two hands, or when you can feel the love of a family member who made them for you. My favourite are socks and slippers, though. Warm feet? Awesome. Bonus: spinning your own yarn is also surprisingly easy. We keep sheep, of course, but Cas has a talent for sweet talking the lady a few miles down the road who keeps alpacas and I love him so much (for other reasons, sure, but mostly for scoring that sweet alpaca wool.)
Baking. Long time readers know by now: bread is the best. The oven makes the whole kitchen warm, and bread is so, so easy to make yourself, and then you get to eat it? Amazing. We love beer bread (because Dean is predictable and realizing he could cook with beer was the best moment of his life bar none), which adds a bit to the cost compared to something like a peasant loaf, just for the cost of the 12 oz. can of beer it takes, but it's still cheaper by far than buying a decent loaf of bread at the store, especially considering we bake and eat three or four whole loaves a week between the three of us. Scroll to the bottom of the list for Dean's easy, foolproof recipe. (Seriously foolproof. Even Cas can do it.)
Cooking. Yeah, we're in recipe town, now. You know what goes good with bread? Stew. And chili. And soup. If you can make it hot in a pot (or a slow cooker!) it's a good wintertime meal. I've typed up our usual chili recipe below, but I think the best thing about chili specifically is that it's an easy formula to riff on. You don't like peppers? They're out. You love tomatoes? Put in as much extra as you want. Vegan? You can leave out the meat or replace it with whatever you want. Dial the spice up or down as much as you want. Our base version doesn't even include much in the way of ratios - it's all what you feel like.
Drinks. I mentioned tea before? Tea is nice for all the time. Now I'm talking getting fancy. I'm talking hot chocolate with real, non-powdered milk. I'm talking cider. I'm talking boozy stuff. We've have a few favourites at our house, but at the risk of jumping the gun and getting Christmas-y too early, I'm going to include a nice eggnog recipe here - because if it can be made with eggs, Dean's mastered it just to keep us from being crushed by the hens' productivity.
Bonus Item: Illegal Barn Cat. Husband just kind of bummed out by the thought that the poor cat is sleeping in the uninsulated barn? Brother horribly allergic? Try Sneaking The Cat In When Dean's On A Run Into Town™! You can try to keep her in Cas' room, but she will escape! She will enter your joint bedroom in the middle of the night! And she will sleep directly on the chest of the one person in the bed whose breathing is affected by her dandruff! But what a hot water bottle substitute a cat can be before she's once again banished from the house because the hay loft is plenty warm enough to keep her safe and comfy.
Beer Bread [x]
3 cups of flour (sifted, but we find sifting only part of it lets you control how dense a bread you prefer - sift 1 cup for a dense loaf, all 3 cups for a fluffy loaf, etc.) 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup sugar 12 oz beer (or as needed for dough consistency) 1/4 to a 1/2 cup melted butter
1. Mix all the dry ingredients, then gradually add in the beer. Remember you want the dough to be semi solid, not like a batter. 2. Push the dough into the bottom of a greased or parchment-lined loaf pan. Pour the melted butter over the top. 3. Bake at 375 for 1 hour.
Chili
1lbs ground beef (can sub other ground meat or meat substitute) 2 cans crushed or diced tomatoes 3 cans beans (we use kidney or black beans) 3 bell peppers, diced 1 large white onion, diced Chili powder
1. Brown the ground beef in a pan, ideally with the onion. 2. Put everything in a big pot. Heat on medium. 3. Adjust chili powder to taste, let it stew as long as you can stand (remembering to stir), serve with rice or bread! Sour cream and shredded cheese are also great toppings.
Chai Eggnog [x]
2 cups of cream (can sub coconut milk) 2 cups of whole milk (can sub almond milk) 5 egg yolks 1/3 cup maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 chai tea bags Bourbon
1. Mix dairy, egg yolks, maple syrup, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt in a pan. Whisk it until it’s frothy. 2. Heat on medium, stirring, until it bubbles just a bit. Turn down the heat and add the tea bags, cooking for another 3 minutes, and then remove them again. Add and mix in the vanilla. 3. Adjust for taste and booze it up.
