As we all know, a few key elements of a Victorian kitchen are the icebox and china cabinets.

The traditional Victorian icebox was made from oak, with zinc door lining and tin shelving. The use of metal was a good conductor of heat, but oak kept the interior cool.

ranter’s bay & Pablo Orza: ειμαρμενη (Heimarmene)

Welcome to review number 114 on this blog in which today I’m featuring an album which I received as a review copy from Kaczynski Editions label head and experimental musician ranter’s bay (Niet F-n). This album is called ειμαρμενη (Heimarmene) and is a collaborative album between ranter’s bay and Spanish multi-instrumental improviser Pablo Orza and features 7 tracks, carrying the title ἄρχων and counting upwards from 1 to 7 as 7 separate parts. After reviewing Síria’s excellent album Boa-Língua this album does follow quite nicely from that one as again we’re inside the territory of expressive sound manipulation, performance and improvisation, albeit this time in a much more abstract, live recording like fashion of pure sonic exploration and with ranter’s bay and Pablo Orza also working more with elements like objects and exploring their electric and acoustic instruments the aim of the music is more free-wheeling than Síria’s album. Indeed looking at the background info from these two artists we can find more of an Electroacoustic Improvisation type of approach they take to making music. ranter’s bay is Niet F-n, an Italian sound artist, audio engineer and experimental musician who besides this project has also released music as Zero23, ranter’s groove and 23RedAnts. Niet F-n has also created music for theatre pieces by Licenciada Sotelo and Marco Regueiro in Spain and by Mending Dance Theatre in Taipei and has contributed sound design and performed at a variety of international arts festivals and centres. Under the name ranter’s bay Niet F-n has released music on Spettro Records and Crónica and has been featured on a self-released 2-CD compilation by Monolyth & Cobalt. Under his various other names he has released music on Creative Sources, Etched Traumas, a self-released EP by Martin Hoogeboom and Setola di Maiale. Niet F-n releases all his music under the open source Creative Commons license so a lot of his music is also available as a free download from various sources. Pablo Orza is as mentioned, a Spanish multi-instrumental improviser who’s played with various groups including Annamoviek, Karst Collective, maDam and OMEGa as well as done collaborations with improvising musicians such as Wade Matthews, LAR Legido, Patxi Valera and Javier Carmona and eventually became part of the Galician Spontaneous Music Orchestra (O.M.E.Ga) which consists of 20 Galician musicians focussing on a stylistic mixture of approaches to real time sound creation. Pablo Orza has released solo music on Creative Sources and collaborative works on alg-a netlabel, zeromoon and pan y rosas discos. Besides his music Pablo also creates visual artworks in the form of collages, illustrations, paintings, sculptures, installations and more and his collage work can be seen as the lovely blue tinted cover of this album. Kaczynski Editions is the label by ranter’s bay himself, which released ειμαρμενη (Heimarmene) and forms a home of both his own works as well as music by several other artists active in (Electro-Acoustic) improvised and Psychedelic tinged experimental music. The fairly new label releases music mostly on limited edition tape format in often quite special packaging featuring rich artwork and as the label’s “manifesto” mentions that “Music is the only weapon” the spirit of Kaczynski Editions is especially that of creating a revolution through Avant-Garde music and art which I definitely find inspiring as especially now it’s a good time to continue sharing imaginative art and music. Before we dive into the music of the album I’ll mention that the presentation of my review copy features the album’s 7 tracks as 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality files as well as the album cover in good resolution and a short press release text in both Italian and English, besides the texts this is very similar to what you’ll receive in the Bandcamp download version.

ειμαρμενη (Heimarmene) starts with first track ἄρχων 1, featuring some nicely clean electric guitar improvisation, metallic object performance, glitches and various electric noises backed by a mysterious but calming resonant sounding field recording of what sounds like a park filled with people lazing in the warm spring sun as well as drinking coffee or tea in the various surrounding cafés we’re off to a pretty good start in terms. Indeed ranter’s bay and Pablo Orza offer us plenty of lovely abstract sounds to explore, whether it’s the rippling reversed quality of Pablo’s guitar or the electronic and processed sounds the duo produces that include quite squelchy liquid like metallic scraping, auto panned and delay effected drum samples as well as mechanical repetition. In terms of exploration the piece does find the duo in quite an inspired position in terms of their performance but both this piece and the next track I’ll get to do take some time to get going as the sparse, scattered nature of the sonic elements make the pieces feel a bit more like extended sketches in which there’s still a lot of trial of approaches going on. The dissonant low end guitar rumbles Pablo creates in the second half as well as the way the pointed sonic elements integrate very natural with the field recording as if being in the same sonic space in a literal sense does show promise and a good ear for immersion in sound however. ἄρχων 2 follows a quite similar sound palette to ἄρχων 1 though without a background field recording and with a generally much more metallic ambience to it. A lot of focus is put on the percussive qualities of the guitar, objects and electronics all creating various movements and actions, often scattering, clashing, sometimes distorting but like in ἄρχων 1 at times the clean sustained tones from the guitar do peek through the irregular bursts of improvised sonics. London and Paris Essay: Cities of Pride and Innovation

During our time in London I visited the Victoria and Albert Museum to view an exhibition called 'Fashioned from Nature', a presentation of Fashionable dress through from the Renaissance era to the modern day. It portrayed the relationship we've consistently had between clothes and Nature.

I noticed this relationship has swung drastically; I think fashion was once used as a detailed study of the natural world. This was often done very directly- for example, baleen, or Whalebone, was used to stiffen and shape women's garments, beetle wings used as embellishment and ostrich feathers were a popular part of clothes and fans.

I found it surprising, but this exhibition showed me that nowadays our overall attitude to fashion is finally beginning to be based on preservation.

I learnt so much about innovative ways designers are striving to cultivate sustainable fashion items and stand up against our fast-fashion culture. Stella McCartney has been a pioneer of sustainable and animal-free fashion since she launched her label in 2001, making investments in reducing the environmental impact of her brand. I especially loved this gorgeous suit style piece designed for a woman- a chic statement, featuring George Stubbs’s beautiful print "Horse Frightened by a Lion".

It ties in with the current trend of using mythological creatures in textiles prints, effortlessly demonstrating how modern and fashionable clothing can be made with little or no environmental damage. This outfit was made from viscose (a non-toxic or polluting alternative to cotton, polyester or silk). "Organisations like Canopy work to make sure that viscose is not from high-risk areas. In 2014, Canopy also teamed up with Stella McCartney to create a life-cycle analysis on alternative fibers." The boots in this outfit include solvent-free polyurethane, and McCartney also recycles materials such as Nylon to make her garments.

I was stunned by this pair of trousers the designer made, again chic smart-casual, styling formal tailoring with a jogging bottom style in a completely on-trend caramel 'leather'.

The leather was made by Mycelium. This is the cells of underground mushroom root structures combined with a substrate of corn stalks and nutrients. I am hugely inspired by Stella McCartney's commitment to material innovation.

Vivienne Westwood takes on environmental activism from a much more outspoken angle, which I admire equally. Her new-wave and punk inspired fashion includes motif T-shirts, for example her "save the arctic" campaign T-shirts, and a world map T-shirt which exposes where the world would become uninhabitable if estimated rises in temperatures are correct.

I thought her piece within the Victoria and Albert Fashioned from Nature exhibition was brilliant. Placed in the heart of the upstairs display, you can tell it's her design even from a distance. In the exhibition, her piece featured a long dress and an "Uninhabitable land" placard, which ties in with her consistent and iconic use of fashion as protest.

I think this dress has been used for its’ colour and silhouette; it matches the red on the map, it looks hot, sharp and metallic, it's almost angry looking. To me it portrays passion. However, it's still a glamorous statement and in that sense it's empowering. I'm intrigued about the picture hung around the mannequins neck and I want to know more; again I appreciate this, her ability to draw peoples’ attention.

What Westwood does that other designers do not, is she constantly puts her brand at risk. She's not only avant-garde in her creations, but she puts these social and environmental messages in peoples’ faces. She's saying "you can't ignore this. It's serious.". In my opinion, this is how positive change is cultivated.

I think her style is reminiscent of Paris, because it maintains a history. Westwood's techniques are inspired by skills and practices that have been collected over hundreds of years; for example, her 1st pirate themed catwalk was inspired by the Merveilleuses and the Incrayables, styles born during the French Revolution. She places an importance on remembering and utilising what we as artists and as people have learnt throughout life.

Conclusively, the exhibition has made me even more eager to want to pursue textiles. It's shown me the importance of art history and to keep studying it as I go along, and it has opened my mind towards believing in my ideas and letting the rest follow.

When we visited Paris, my main observation was that art is integral to the city because it ties the people together. The immediate and abundant access to artistic inspiration seems to transpire into a pride throughout Paris which is a poignant sensation felt by visitors. Upon visiting Musee D’Orsay and in particular The Louvre, it became evident that art impacts the architecture and interior design of the many exciting places within Paris. My main observation in the Louvre and Musee D’Orsay was the intense attention to detail consistent in all aspects of ancient Art; household cutlery, suits of armour and weapons, furniture, tapestries, interior design and architecture, fashion etc.

The extent of detail was profoundly astonishing. Due to these ongoing exhibitions, the people of Paris are able to maintain and remember the necessity that putting effort into art throughout the city has on people's impressions and their quality of life; it is clear to see how art can be associated with sacredness, luxuriousness, excitement and empowerment. During my time I stumbled across the beautiful plethora of Vintage shops lining the streets. These stores were not simply clothes outlets but immersive experiences with attention to detail and aesthetic which almost took you out of real life. With staff and customers dressed to the nines, each person you encountered felt like a character in a fantasy world. The atmosphere of each store was buzzing with energy, fueled by mood enhancing music; so often it felt like you'd entered a disco, everyone elated. It massively sparked my enthusiasm for textiles because it gave me a vision for how I personally would display my own garments in the future; I would love to create a similar environment. Paris also showed me an understanding of the importance of quality, intelligence and an attention to detail in art.

Stark yet welcoming, the interior of new deli Louis Pretty takes inspiration from Palm Springs modernism and David Hockney’s iconic painting A Bigger Splash. Located in Berlin’s hip Kreuzberg neighbourhood, the deli was designed by Philipp Mainzer Office for Architecture and Design, and reworks common deli touchpoints such as bench seating, a counter bar focused around the cook station, and Formica tables that give the illusion of a swimming pool surface. Graphic use of bold colour is contrasted with polished steel and dark, teak-stained Houdini chairs by interior design company E15.

Frida Kahlo’s neighbourhood: exploring vibrant Coyoacán, Mexico City

Ahead of a major Frida Kahlo show at Londons V&A we visit the artists bohemian district from her house to the cantina where she drank, and from arts venues to fantastic markets and restaurants

Coyoacán was once a hard-to-pronounce place, little known outside of Mexico City. Now it is an almost-obligatory destination for most visitors. Blame it on Frida Kahlo-mania. The artist’s birthplace and final residence, now the Museo Casa Azul, is here on a quiet residential street between similar still-private homes built around the turn of the 20th century. The folk art-filled museum, open as such since 1957, now draws queues that snake around the tree-lined block (advance online purchase of tickets is advisable). But this was not always the case.

On my first visit to this vast capital in 1978 as a student of art history, I wanted to visit the then little-known artist’s house. My guidebook didn’t mention it and my hotel concierge didn’t know of it – nor did the several taxi drivers I queried to help me find it. On that occasion I didn’t get there. And when I finally did, several years later, it was dusty and forgotten; I was the only visitor that day.

A short walk from the Casa Azul is the home where Leon Trotsky lived – and was killed with an ice-pick. The house has been preserved in detail: Trotsky’s bathrobe still hangs on the hook where he left it. It’s the area’s other big draw.

But it’s worth exploring the neighbourhood beyond these famous homes as there is much more to discover. Coyoacán’s main plaza, cobblestoned and plant-filled, is divided in halves, called Jardín Centenario and Jardín Hidalgo. They form a typical colonial Mexican town square, complete with benches for people-watching, gazebos for music and vendors selling balloons, toys and traditional sweets.

At the eastern side sits the church of San Juan Bautista, a highly gilded baroque affair. Across the plaza to the left of the church is the Casa de Cortés, a large yellow edifice, which occupies the site of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés’s 16th-century country home. Corazón de Maguey is an informal restaurant offering Oaxacan and other regional dishes. In the evenings it becomes more of a bar, with a large selection of mezcals. Outside seating affords a good view of the plaza.

Frida and her husband Diego Rivera liked to knock back a tequila or 10 at Cantina La Guadalupana, which opened its doors in 1932. But unlike the equivalent Hemingway hangouts around the world, La Guadalupana has not become an overpriced tourist trap: it retains its old-fashioned working-class charm, bullfighting decor and good service. Free snacks are offered with drinks and there is a serviceable menu of Mexican dishes. The Mercado de Antojitos down the block, is a well known garage-like space; it’s open late and locals stop here for a rich pozole, the hominy-filled stew or a deep-fried quesadilla of cheese, squash blossom or chorizo.

Coyoacán’s market, a few blocks north (Calle Malintzin between Aguayo and Allende) is where Frida shopped, although the current structure was built in the 1950s, after her death. It still offers a colourful, folksy experience perfumed by flowers, fruits and bubbling pots of spicy mole sauce. In the middle of the market is the renowned Tostadas Coyoacán, with an abundant display of tostada toppings such as prawns, chicken, crab, and spicy pork, piled high and ready to be heaped on a crispy corn tortilla. Order one of the exotic fresh fruit drinks at the adjacent booth for a perfect Mexican lunch.

Heading west from the main plaza, Avenida Francisco Sosa is lined with spectacular colonial-era homes, such as the Italian Cultural Institute and the Casa de Cultura Jesús Reyes Heroles. Across the street is the leafy Plaza Santa Catarina, one of the loveliest spots in the city.

La Casa de los Tacos, Mexico

For a knockout taco experience, head to La Casa de los Tacos. The owners, Hector Ramos, a photographer who runs an art gallery upstairs, and Alejandro Escalante, author of the renowned Tacopedia, have created a thoroughly bohemian vibe. The tacos prehispánicos feature edible insects and are surprisingly delicious. For the less adventurous, there are grilled chicken, beef and pork tacos.

Mercadaroma, meanwhile, is Coyoacán’s answer to the gourmet street market craze. Dozens of stands offer multi-regional Mexican and international foods – and fusions of both – in a smartly designed three-storey building. Try the seafood tacos from the Pacific state of Sonora at Tetakawi or a torta (Mexico’s version of the sandwich), at La Barraca Valenciana.

Mercadoroma

Plaza de la Conchita, a few blocks east of the main plaza (walking down Higuera), is another peaceful park, whose church is one of the oldest in Mexico, dating to the mid-16th century. This architectural gem is a rare example of tequitqui style, which shows the influence of indigenous Indian craftsmen on Spanish baroque architectural ornament.

In addition to architecture-viewing and great eating, Coyoacán offers several other important cultural institutions. The Cineteca Nacional is Mexico’s central film institute, housed in a soaring modern complex where as many as 30 movies are shown on any given day. The Centro Cultural y Social Veracruzano is home to a theatre, shop and El Tajin one of the area’s best restaurants. Down the same road, at no. 134 is the largest branch of Gandhi, Mexico’s major bookseller.

A stroll around Coyoacán makes for a peaceful – and delicious – day out. And a snapshot of Frida’s Mexico.

Designed by the couple’s friend, the architect and artist Juan O’Gorman, this was Kahlo and Rivera’s first proper marital home. It’s actually two houses joined by a bridge. They lived here from 1934 to 1939 and divorced in that year. Kahlo moved back to the Blue House and when she and Rivera remarried the following year, he moved to join her there, though he kept the San Angel house as his studio. Xochimilco and Museo Dolores Olmedo, Mexico City

The floating gardens of Xochimilco have been Mexico City’s favourite way to spend a Sunday for many decades, as shown by the photographs of Kahlo trailing her hand into the water from her boat. It’s still the best place to soak up the vibrant, colourful and musical culture of the Mexico Kahlo loved. Rent a boat and be ferried through canals awash with mariachi bands, tortilla- and taco-makers, beer and tequila sellers. Afterwards head for the tranquillity of the Museo Dolores Olmedo Patino, a 17th-century mansion once owned by a friend and patron of Rivera’s. Kahlo’s painting The Two Fridas features in the museum’s collection of 20th-century Mexican art. The museum is currently showing more than more than 200 works by British artist Leonora Carrington (until 23 September). Carrington arrived in Mexico City in 1942, and was based there until her death in 2011. She knew Kahlo and was friends with English millionaire Edward James, a patron of surrealist artists and creator of Las Pozas sculpture garden in the jungles of San Luis Potosí. The exhibition includes discoveries such as a colourful 22-piece set of tarot cards, intricate paintings and tapestries never shown before as well as her best-known works including her self-portrait borrowed from the Met, and her 1947 painting The Giantess. • Admission £2.40, free on Sundays, museoartemoderno.com

Soon after their first marriage (in 1929), Kahlo and Rivera went to live in Cuernavaca, around 90km south of Mexico City, borrowing the home of the US ambassador to Mexico where they lived while Rivera was painting murals in the town’s Palacio de Cortés. They depict the atrocities committed against the indigenous people, and the Mexican Revolution, and are a macro take on the world, in contrast to Kahlo’s micro take.
